I was referred to BHBS in an odd way. Over 25 years ago, a relative went to BHBS with old photos, articles, and personal writings that she wanted put into book form as a gift from her to her family. She only made three copies of the collection of items, which she put together and these, she had BHBS bind. These beautiful books are now cherished family heirlooms. However, now other family members salted across the US want to read and have copies of this lovely and heartfelt book. One relative suggested that the book be scanned so that electronic copies could be made available, but this entailed unbinding and binding again one of the original books. The books have the BHBS stamp inside, and so we decided to contact BHBS to see if they could help and if they were still there. Wonderfully, they are still operating in their quaint 1960s location, the father of the present owner having put together the original books. The son and current owner, Jack, kindly agreed to help. He carefully unbound one book for scanning and then rebound it as if it had never been touched. And, he did not charge an outrageous price. I felt like I had stepped back in time, and I think he did too. Book binding today is a rare art, but provides people with something very special. Jack assembled an incredible book for my partner's 30th birthday. I requested a series of old (wrinkled) newspapers to be bound together within a timeframe of 3-4 weeks. A considerable amount of work, which Jack tackled with ease. The newspapers required pressing to flatten out the wrinkles. Jack bound it with a leather cover (engraved beautifully) and marble cherry inserts. It was completed earlier than expected and to a quality higher than I could have imagined. The book is gorgeous. Following my acquisition of a genuine 1799 signature by President John Adams, my search for someone to create a portable custom leather folding portfolio led me to Jack at his Beverly Hills Bookbinding Service. Finding a bindery in LA is almost like finding a pair of Y-3 sneakers at Target. UCLA used to have a bindery service in Culver City but that service has moved to Oakland. When I was about to give up, I decided another attempt with google.com. And I found Jack @ Beverly Hills Bookbinding Service. Jack runs a bindery on the 2nd floor of a shop on Beverly Drive. This is the same BH shopping stretch where Williams Sonoma, Crate and Barrel are located. He has restored books as old as 14c and binded film scripts, old bibles etc. After speaking to him on the phone, I decided to drop by today with my dissertation which is almost 2 years due to be binded for my personal collection. Jack offers leather and cloth binding. The base price is $200 and $100 respectively. Cow hide leather will an assortment of colors are offered. Type setting for the cover adds another $20 to $50 depending on complexity. The lead time is about 4 to 6 weeks. I will post again when I collect my copies.... read more
