West Coast Equine - My mare needed surgery for twisted intestine. I am grateful. She and the baby had the best care during their stay!

I cannot say enough good things about West Coast Equine and the care my mare received during one of…read morethe most difficult experiences of my life. I brought my mare in for colic surgery performed by Dr. Sullivan, and the experience was completely different from another equine hospital I had dealt with previously. At West Coast Equine, I was allowed to watch the entire surgery, including my mare being brought onto the surgery table with the crane and be moved into the padded recovery room. I was also able to watch Dr. Sullivan personally walk her from the surgery room to her stall. As an owner, that level of transparency, compassion, and respect meant everything to me. At the prior hospital, I was not allowed to stay or see my mare after surgery, which never made sense especially when other visitors were allowed access but not me as her owner. At West Coast Equine, I was always allowed to see my mare and received regular updates. The office staff and hospital team were consistently kind, patient, and supportive. Unfortunately, about a month after discharge, my mare developed severe liver toxicity from post-surgery medication and had to be hospitalized again for over three weeks in intensive care. During this time, Dr. Kemper was very honest with me about how serious her condition was and on multiple occasions she hinted to me that euthanasia might be necessary but never forced me to make the decision. One of the things I am most grateful for is that during the worst night of her condition when my mare had fallen down and I was not answering my phone in the middle of the night, Dr. Kemper did not make the decision to put my mare to sleep on her own. Instead, she continued caring for her and fighting for her. Knowing that my mare was treated with that level of compassion and respect, even when I could not be reached, means more to me than I can put into words. I visited my mare every day at different hours due to my work schedule, and not once was I ever told I couldn't be there. There was always someone there to answer my questions or to help us. Many people told me my mare would not recover and encouraged me to stop her suffering. What made the difference was that Dr. Kemper and Dr. Sullivan listened to me, believed in my mare, and were willing to keep trying when others would not. In the end, my mare survived. She walked out of that hospital alive. After being told by multiple veterinarians that her chances were slim to none, she proved them wrong. I truly believe she is a miracle, but miracles don't happen without people who are willing to fight for them. Thank you to Dr. Kemper, Dr. Sullivan, and the entire West Coast Equine staff for your compassion, dedication, and for never giving up on my best friend. We will forever be grateful!

I couldn't be more disappointed. We took my daughter's horse to this hospital in an emergency…read moresituation, after a total blender and misdiagnose by Conejo Valley equine. Dr. Giacapuzzi talked a big talk... but proceeded to gouge a massive hole in the hoof... when asked why such a brutal and invasive approach, the doctor claimed that his tools were dull and just weren't cutting the way they should... WTF? Two days in their " ICU", I get a call saying that it's time to come put my daughter's horse down. The doctor kept on talking about how we were just a referral from another doctor (which we were not ) and that he felt uncomfortable working on my daughter's horse because he didn't want to step on the other Veterinarian's toes. He suggested that if we didn't put her down that night, then we should take the horse back to the unsanitary barn where she got the infection and let the other Veterinarian come out to the barn to check on the Horse whenever we felt necessary... WTF? He was so concerned about not stepping on the toes of another local Veterinarian that he was willing to give up doing the right thing for my daughter's Horse. Completely unethical, unprofessional, and inhumane When we realized Dr Giacapuzzi wasn't willing to do anything to help our horse, we immediately trailered her to Alimo, a specialized medicine hospital in Los Olivo ca. She's now on the road to recovery with absolutely no thanks to Dr. Giacapuzzi and his team. Do yourself and your Horse a favor and use anyone other than this veterinary practice or Conejo equine

I only take my pups here and she's taken care of our family dogs throughout the last 15 years. One of the vet techs with beautiful pink hair was extra sweet to my especially nervous little guy. We had a standard spayed procedure here on our healthy Golden Retriever and have nothing but problems since. A couple days post surgery I noticed a strange bump on the incisions and brought my dog in for a follow up. The vet informed me that it looked ok and that there maybe a minor inflection and prescribed antibiotics. Fast forward less than a week, my dog was in need of emergency surgery to remove a total blockage in her intestines due to inattention by the vet when placing the incisions. This surgery cost north of $5,000. A few years later my dog once again had a blockage in her intestines due to the fact that she now has a narrower section that without the previous incident would have naturally passed. This latest incident required a second emergency surgery that cost us an additional $10,000. I have been extremely patient with them and waited several years before posting this review. After the most recent incident I decided that people need to be informed to make the best decision for your beloved pets. Once again please reconsider, there are many other options for veterinary services in our area.

I decided to do so to share my experience and allow an opportunity for growth. I wanted to be proactive so I am thankful this wasn't an emergency. My pup has extreme allergy issues. I recently moved to So Cal from No Cal and started a new vet relationship. I explained to Dr. C what the pups experience had been and what I needed. I thought that went well. Scheduled a follow up visit to check in and review protocol as this is when his allergies take a bad turn. I specifically requested Dr c again and was told to come on a Tuesday. I arrived 10 mind ahead of appt to give them time to check me in and to be respectful of their time. First - Dr C wasn't even scheduled to work that day. It appears they may have double booked as there was another couple waiting with their pup. We both were taken to a room and the other couple were seen right away. I waited over half an hour and nothing. When I stepped out to ask if the vet tech could at least vaccinate the pup that seemed to throw everyone for a loop. Please no it is a large and appears to be quiet office. Many people seem to have not a lot going on and it appeared as if I may be disturbing then rather that being a paying customer with a request. When after standing around and nothing seemed to be happening other than just wait around. I thought this wouldn't work and left and got what seemed not of pure intent with a have a good day. If you are a parent you know what I mean when I say tone wasn't genuine. Now I am not angry just disappointed at people lack if care and kindness. I chose to drive further looking for a responsive and kind business. For me, this is not it. I was able to start service with a new vet within 2 miles from where I live. My message, be kind but expect the same in return. If not, go somewhere else. That is all we can do.
