The customer service desperately needs improvement on the top floor. Yesterday, on Xmas eve, I witnessed the cashier rudely interact with a customer, who was just standing next to his mother, doing absolutely nothing but facing the cashier while his mother was browsing. The cashier curtly asked him if he wanted to pay for whatever he was holding and both he and his mother both stated they already purchased it, the cashier then demanded to see his receipt. The cashier started off with an aggressive tone and it erupted into a shouting match. I occasionally come to this store and have purchased from both floors, it seems the top floor workers are not as friendly as the downstairs workers for whatever reason. read more

I went to this store all of my life. With my mom when I was young, throughout young adulthood, etc. and I've always enjoyed it particularly around the holidays. However, last year during the holidays, I took my 12 year old here to show him all of the cool stuff inside. I'm a single mom, and I've got zero disposable income. I couldn't buy my son anything from the store as my credit cards were all maxed out. I just thought it would be a cool experience for him. At the bottoms of the stairs there was this incredible collection of little buildings and things in a snowy, village like world. They were so expensive. There was a sign that said do not touch. So we didn't touch anything but we marveled for a good thirty minutes over these beautiful pieces. We were in our own world, so imagine my surprise when I noticed three old ladies surrounding us just watching. Like body guards. One on the top of the stairs looking down and two others positioned like a couple of defensive lineman. It dawned on me that they thought we were thieves. I didn't say anything to my son. I just wandered around the store and let him follow me. We chatted about stuff. I went deep into the store and sure enough they followed us. We even got on the elevator and two of the women were waiting when we got off on the main floor. When we left the store, they followed us out. Even so much as to run to the front window of the store to watch us on the exterior sidewalk with an uncommon intensity. I waited a year to write this review because I felt so much shame about it. I think about it every time I go Christmas shopping with my son. These women were horrid creatures. The thought of them makes my stomach turn. I would never buy a thing from that store despite my son reminiscing over that beautiful Christmas village collection all of the time. Shame on these judgmental older ladies. How miserable can any person at any age possibly be? About as miserable as those old ladies at David M. Brian. read more

Worst Customer Service. I had a broken foot and sat on a chair upstairs as I waited for my friend to let me know what kind of jelly cat to buy. I was told to move. So rudely. Unbelievable but I was desperate and needed birthday/Valentines gift so I spend $275 on Jelly Cats. The gal downstairs was nice and apologized but it didn't help. The items inside are certainly dated, but I simply went in for some gift wrap, for which they had a large selection. This one star review was simply for the lack of customer care. Today was a huge storm in the Bay Area, pure buckets. Upon checking out I requested an extra plastic bag to keep the paper products I just purchased dry. I was told "We don't do that." I even offered to pay extra for the additional bag, again I was declined. In respect of my elders, I simply told the elderly woman at the register that she was "silly" and had half a mind to return everything I had just purchased. Her misery wasn't worth it and I carried on. Just a lack of customer care over a plastic bag. Will never use my money here again. read more

The people closed the door early, normally I would agree to have come earlier. Yet their posted hours should be what they follow as a business. I had even talked to an associate the other day about a specific item and they told me they closed later than their posted hours. Blatantly lying to me about their hours as they said they closed at 8 and that was the reason I thought I could come closer to 7, but they closed at 6:50 apparently anyways so guess none of the actual times I was told were right. Know not to waste my time coming to this place if they apparently have inconsistent hours. read more

Super cute store, but make sure not to touch anything when you go inside. I had a strange experience this week: my daughter took a book off the shelf and played with it for a few minutes while I took a phone call. I hung up, put the book back and started to walk out. A clerk grabbed the book and told me I needed to buy it, since she had played with it. There was absolutely no damage so I was very surprised and definitely annoyed. I told her that I would buy the book, but that I would never come back into the store. She just smiled and continued to ring me up. And she made sure to stamp "final sale" on my receipt. Do not shop here! Unfortunately this is the only place in the east bay that sells MacKenzie Child's now that Neiman Marcus is closed. I went in to exchange a gift that I received and it took over an hour to exchange the item and use the store credit to do a special order for some plates that they didn't have in the store (but were and still are in stock on the MacKenzie website). They told me that they would place the order and would call me to come pick them up when they were ready. I was annoyed that they wouldn't just have the shipped to my house first of all since I live 30 minutes away with a newborn, and second annoyed that they called me a couple hours after I left to tell me that the quoted me the wrong price and I would have to pay the difference when I came in to pick up the plates. Three and a half weeks later I called to see where my plates are and they said they don't have any updates. I explained that they are in stock on the website so why is it taking so long. They said just go order them on the website then and that there nothing they can do. Problem is that I used store credit to order the plates so they can't refund me to order them on the website. I'd just be stuck with store credit to a store with terrible customer service. I asked if they could just order the plates off the website for me with the money I already paid them for the plates and they said no. I've asked for them to have a manager call me back to get this resolved since there is no reason it should take this long to "special order" something that is in stock, but haven't heard back. Hopefully my plates will show up someday. read more

So after walking around the new moved across the way, DMB. I'm of the opinion I like this one less. It's smaller. And doesn't have the same bomb shelter, your own little world feel to it that was so amazing in the last store. It's also more cluttered in a less cosy way. Before it seemed boutique-y, now it just seems kinda garage sale. You can look across the room and see everything. Much unlike the former DMB. So yes, they have the items they used to at the old store. They're just not as good looking on the shelves anymore. read more

Went to this store and an elderly lady followed me ( a Hispanic woman) and my boyfriends mom (white) and when we separated she continued to follow me and I had books in my hand she asked me if I was gonna buy them I said yes but she said she'd hold onto them at the front counter and when I noticed other people had items they were holding onto they weren't questioned definitely not returning here glad they've never gotten a cent from me. The older man who works here on Sunday afternoon was so incredibly rude and off putting. A today i walked into the store, maybe 10 feet away, completely politely and asked "excuse me, are your stuffed animals downstairs?" He walks up and says "pls don't yell across the room at me". I didn't get her name. She is an older white woman 70s or 80s and I politely asked her if there was a bathroom for my toddler son who needed to use the restroom. I've shopped here before and had a couple items over $100 that I was going to purchase But after a rude reply to me I put them back and I left. When I asked her she wouldn't even look at me and she said no yeah we don't have one OK. It was her tone intonation and just flat out rudeness that was unnecessary. There are very few people here and It saddens me that small businesses are suffering this much but if this is how you show your appreciation and you can't even be a basic decent human being then maybe failure is something you should be accustomed to in life Also there is a bathroom. I went in on a Sunday asking for artificial flowers and the old gentleman's response was quite interesting " I don't know where the display put the artificial flowers in the store!" As I walked away I overheard another older lady sales person ask her colleague ( the older gentleman ) "did she ask for artificial flowers doesn't she know that we sold them all on sale!" I have been looking for a cute apron to wear in my cake decorating class. Even though I had never been in David M Brian before, I thought that it might have some cute aprons. I asked a sales associate where the aprons were located. She directed me down the stairs. Once there I had two sales associate helping me. Maybe I just looked helpless, but I prefer to think that they were just doing their job. I was shown multiple aprons. Not only did they have a nice selection, but the prices were better than some of the other kitchen-y stores in the area. I selected a pink apron (naturally) as that is my favorite color. Perfect. Now not only will I learn how to decorate cakes, but I will have a cute apron to wear while doing so! ;) read more

I didn't even know who David M. Brian was, but I was happy to meet him. After popping into Crate and Barrel for a juice squeezer (hand, not electric) and not finding one - the salesperson recommended me to DMB. I walked over and instantly found the cooking department. YESSS, more GADGETS than Batman! Well I guess they are not really comparable, but I was happy. I was able to not only find what I was looking for, but multiple types of juicers. Trying to keep my eyes on the prize, I stuck to the one item. I got back and we made homemade lime-watermelon-mint margaritas, which I would say was WELL worth the little purchase of the juicer. read more

I normally like this place but I bought a Cal blanket here last month for my mom for her birthday. My mom opened up the gift and the store failed to take the detector thing off of it. I told my mom I would take it back to the store and have it removed (a hassle for me and making my mom's gift not ready on her birthday). I took back the blanket yesterday and the attendant behind the counter asked if I had my receipt. "No sorry I don't have it on me" I replied. He then got huffy with me and acted like it was a big deal to take the tag thing off. Look, it was YOUR fault (the store's) that I'm even back doing this and if you want to continue to get my money, you should probably treat your customer with a little respect. He then got snotty and said "this looks used". I explained that it had been in my sister's car on the way back from the birthday party and her dog sheds a lot. The blanket itself was not used because of the stupid tag left on it. He then took off the tag, and in a very snippy voice told me "next time bring a receipt" and said "can you pick up the blanket. I don't want to touch dog hair" and I had to reach over the counter to get it. Next time I won't be bringing a receipt because hopefully you will have learned to take the tag off first or to treat customers with respect .. or I just won't shop there! read more

Worst customer service. They do not provide gift receipts, I bought something and came back a week later to get a gift wrap and they refused to, I have been a customer for them for over 10 years. She asked me to show proof of purchase via my bank statement (since I didn't keep my receipt) and I showed it to her but then she said that's not enough. She wasted an hour of my time, very manipulative. Very uneducated. I passed through this store, on my way to check out Johnny Was, since they sell several pieces there from their line. There is such a variety of things to shop through on the top floor! I decided to check out the bottom floor, and I was greeted downstairs by a lovely little old lady named Kathy. She proceeded to help me look at some gift ideas. It was really nice to receive some old fashioned great customer service, the kind that you find at the older department stores like McCaulou's, I. Magnin, or Bullock's. I liked the attentive and personalized manner in which I was treated and the polite manner of selling, like when Kathy asked me, "Do you own one of these?" when referring to the festive holiday lighted musical displays. I've shopped here many times over many years. It was a great store at its previous and much larger location. Now in late 2021, the store seems a bit "tired" after Covid. However the store contains many lovely and handsome boutique items. Yes the store is higher priced but that's what their customers expect when they are buying that unique and special gift. Downstairs, they have a nice selection of table linens etc.. The sales women are so nice downstairs, they always give my little dog a treat! I do hope the store continues it reputation for selling fine goods as I appreciate the experience they are trying to bring to the customer. read more

Never shopping here again. Went here with my kids and bought a puzzle when the cashier asked if I've been to the downstairs area. We decided to go down and were browsing when my daughter and I were looking at their jams and giggling about their names. A worker (White, with short, gray hair) came by and then proceeded to follow us. At one point she stopped us and asked: "Were you planning on buying that item she (my daughter) has in her bag?" I told her we didn't take anything and asked the worker if she'd like to check my daughter's bag. She then says "No, no. If you say you didn't take anything that's fine." But my daughter had already opened her bag and showed her there was nothing inside. She claimed she saw us giggling and my daughter was putting something in her bag (it was a big brown shopping bag with a shirt we purchased from Zara) and figured we were stealing. There are just more polite ways of approaching someone - especially if you didn't even know for sure someone "stole" something - since she obviously was WRONG. I've never experienced something like this in all my life. It was a good life lesson for my kids to learn how to handle crotchety, old people like her. read more

Great gift shop! Was looking for a magnifying glass, and happy to find a goof selection and price range. The woman that helped me was super swamped with other shoppers, but really took her time to let me know she would get to me as soon as possible. After her original crowd cleared, she was extremely helpful with my simple $28 purchase. The giftwrapping service is nice, but the line can get long. They do NOT service the "box only" customer. You must wait until they properly wrap your gift, and purchases under $20 do not get this service. Overall, I would go back again. read more

If you are going in for a gift, think twice - they do not like returns, and they clearly do not state any return policy. Shopping is not my favorite thing in the world. I am so thankful that I am able to live in a time where I have anything I want at the click of a mouse. But there was a gift that my husband and I agreed would be the perfect gift for my mother in law for throwing me a baby shower, Limoge. The said gift was really hard to find online. The only place he knew that carries real Limoge boxes was David M. Brian. We finally made it in here. I had been in the other location once about 6 years ago and from what I remember I like this new spot better. However, its still cramped and very claustrophobic to me. And of course swarming with really rude "I'm the only person shopping here today" types. While I tried out a comfy chair my husband found the Limoge case and found the perfect box. A Halloween inspired box with a ghost body and a Pumpkin head holding a lantern. The head was the lid. I'm not sure of the exact purpose of Limoge. This was the cutest one we saw even with our previous online searching. We just knew she would like it. We made our purchase and even got it professionally gift wrapped. Except the wait was a half hour. The gift wrap area was down stairs and so was the bathroom. We headed down all while I was doing practice birth breathing because I was about to pee my pants. Only to find the bathrooms locked and you had to go find the key from customer service where there was no one at the desk. My head was spinning. Finally another customer thought I needed to sit when I told her how I just needed to pee she went and got the key for me to use the bathroom. Yes, another customer, not an employee. Also, the downstairs area smells cloyingly like dirty diaper. This is the food area and somethings gone bad I think. Our gift was wrapped in the said amount of time and it was very nicely done. Silver paper with Royal Blue Ribbon. Very professional. I like the store. I wouldn't necessarily come here on a whim but its alright. Pricey, yes. Odd to get around in when busy, yes. All she had was a notebook that she was planning to purchase. When she confronted the employee, she asked what she was doing. Walking around Broadway Plaza this past weekend when we see that David M Brian has not only moved locations but it's HUGE. Way too many window knick-knacks tempt us to enter & we are immediately treated to a feast for the eyes - so much it's almost overwhelming.....but in a good way! Books, Cookbooks, Calendars; fine crystal-wear & ceramics, sparklie costume jewelry, Jewelry Boxes, Easter decorations galore, and a WHOLE downstairs dedicated to the kitchen - gadgets, appliances, & dishes.....and I know I'm totally forgetting a million other things Scored cookbooks on Cupcakes, Chocolate & Pies / Tarts (woohoo!) and some adorable Bunny Salt & Pepper Shakers Plan to go back for some funky red measuring cups & measuring spoons that will match my kitchen just incredibly Wow - am I a fan of the new & improved David M Brian!! read more

I absolutely love this place. I have literally been coming here since high school ( yes, I'm weird I know) at least when they were located at the old location just across from where they are now. I have always found and still find this place to hold some extremely charming and quality household and collector items. I am and always have been especially drawn to the down stairs kitchen area and since me and my hun just bought our first place, I have been on a decorating ram page. This place has everything!!! As far as home knickknacks and so forth! They are a bit pricey, though I do find most of the items to be of top quality. I also have found the service to be quite friendly. These folks are not very flexible to buy from! I wanted to buy a Santa Claus for $250.00 they had on display (Yes, a frivolous purchase!) but they said it was a display and they had no box for it so I asked them for a small discount. The clerk calls the owner and says: "I know you told us not to ask, but a customer wants to know if we can give a discount on a display item without a box? The answer rang through the phone: NO!!!" Now for a delicate holiday item that is on display for a few weeks then packed in my storage to cost this much without a box and will get trashed for the next 11 months in storage is pretty poor business practice I think. I would have been content with a $10.00 discount for the missing box but such strict "NO" attitude made me take my money and run. You should probably do the same :-) read more

They moved across the way to another bbuilding since Neiman's is going to tear down that old one and rebuild. It is 2 stories and not everything has moved. But they had their Christmas items in and it is a great place to find unique things. I found my second set of Christmas cards (I usually buy from Costco). These have an SF design on them so I can send to in-laws in the Midwest. Plus I also bought these 3-D like globe cards to send to my neice and nephews. Things are still a bit pricey here but the quality and selection is really good. The service is good here but they can be caught with a customer for longer than needed. Mostly the grandma's and older aunties shop here. read more

This is my go to spot to shop for presents for my parents. I hate shopping, but it's nice to be able to get all of your holiday shopping done in one place. David M Brian is separated into two floors. The first floor carries a high end gifts that cater to older clientele. The second floor is mostly cooking supplies. They offers gift wrap, and everything that they wrap looks amazing. Even during Christmas time you can buy something at the register and pick it up downstairs within an hour. My mom collects "Match" products and this is one of the only places in the area that carry them. This is definitely not somewhere you should come if you are on a small budget. It's hard to come here and spend less than $100, and a lot of their individual items are priced far beyond that level. The service here is always terrible. I can't think of somewhere that has a more pretentious staff, you would think they are selling million dollar art instead of hundred dollar gifts. read more

Now that we are all realizing that sometimes just a tweet or email doesn't cut it, it's nice that there's a place to find a lovely assortment of upscale but not crazy expensive greeting cards.
