Everything from the personalized welcome sign at the front desk to the technician to Amberley to Dr. Hughes was top-notch and professional. Dr. Hughes and Amberley sat down and spent a great deal of time discussing everything with me. Highly recommend! read more

Wonderful Orthodontic Experience - Highly Recommend! This practice is truly wonderful. They turned what is usually an awful experience for any teenager (getting braces) into something positive and even marvelous. The staff is always kind and attentive. Dr. Hughes went above and beyond by coming in on a weekend within 30 minutes when my son's bracket broke. That level of care and responsiveness made all the difference. We are very grateful and highly recommend this office to any family needing orthodontic treatment. read more

I brought my two sons for orthodontic treatment. The initial triage went well for both and I was happy with the work on the braces for my older son. Not so much for my younger one. The suggested treatment they gave me would have included oral surgery, reattaching a new set of braces, and thousands of dollars for out-of-pocket expenses for something that may or may not be a problem later in his life. This would require him to see another specialist. Since we were told that the surgery was optional at this point, my husband and I decided to spare our child unnecessary pain and he'll just continue with braces. After his initial treatment (tightening the braces), a bracket broke off. They had us return a day later to have it fixed. A week later another one broke. I decided to wait until he goes back for a check-up to get them fixed. After receiving a notification to schedule an appointment I called the office to set one up. That's when I was told that they wouldn't see him because I didn't sign a treatment plan. They also told me that, if I made an appointment, he'd be treated as a new patient. I asked for more clarification and was told someone would call me back. That call never came. This is ridiculous! He was already seen at this office, they already had x-rays, and worked on his braces... BUT because we opted not to put him through NON-URGENT, optional, and EXPENSIVE dental procedures he could no longer be seen as a patient at this office. I guess I'll have to keep my money and get my son's braces fixed elsewhere. read more

The facility itself is easy to find. Inside environment is clean, calming, and well kept. Receptionist was very friendly and genuine. Marcia who took our profile picture and picture of our teeth was very polite and courteous. Dr. Hughes was very elaborate, understanding, and competent in his profession. We are happy with his consultation and advice he gave us. Samantha the lady who went through the finance was very good too until now it's been 2 days and we haven't received our treatment plan from her yet though she told us that she will email it to us at the end of the day. It's delaying our process to contact our dentist to provide with the treatment plan for further treatment in the dental area before starting the ortho side of the treatment. But overall, we are happy with the practice. read more

David Hughes Orthodontics - Waiting room - Orthodontists Near Me - West Springfield, Virginia

4/24/19 Update - Joanne and Dr. Hughes personally reached out, offered an apology, found me a local orthodontist in Chicago, and covered the cost of a new retainer. The situation was described as an internal miscommunication, which I interpreted to mean that Dr. Jordan should have helped me with the retainer last year. Nonetheless, Dr. Hughes and his staff were very helpful, quick to respond, and truly stand by their work. They could have ignored me (especially since I moved out of state), but instead took responsibility and made everything right. Dr. Hughes went above and beyond to take care of things and now I'm confident he will do the same for you! Also special thank you to Joanne, with whom I communicated throughout this process! read more

I went to Dr. Hughes to close a space I had from previous unfinished ortho I had in the past. My teeth were not crooked, they were spacing out. I had been in treatment for 2 years and the space was never closed. I must reiterate that that was the only reason I went to Dr. Hughes. I had metal retainers to continue to work on the space (why was I in braces from the beginning if the retainer could close my space???) anyway, I went for a visit and waited in the waiting room well over 30 minutes which only happened twice and left. A little over a year later, they charge $45 dollars to look at a gap that he did not close, did I say that was the reason I went to Dr. Hughes? $5000 later, I have the same gap I had 3 years ago. I honestly think he is a sweetheart and has well intentions. His assistances are very friendly and his office is very maintained. I give him two stars for presentation. The only reason why I rate his work - not his practice low is because my probelm has not been fixed. Now I have to go to yet another orthodontist and fork out more money to fix what I paid his office $5000 to repair. "Hi Mia, I am Dr. David R. Hughes Community Relations Coordinator and when I read your review I wanted to contact you. We are located in Springfield, Va. and don't have you in our patient base. We hope that possibly you have mistaken us for a doctor close to where you live that has the same last name. We would feel terrible if you left us this unhappy, our patients become part of our orthodontic family. If you need more clarification please feel free to contact us. " I am 100% certain that it was the office, located near the McDonald's right behind the Shopping Center with the Giant, CVS, Dollar Tree, etc., I'm not mistaken at all. I've been there too many times to be confused. Like I said before, I adore Dr. Hughes and the staff, but to do the same thing and expect different results seems a bit crazy, I will pass. read more

Dr. Hughes is a competent orthodontist. Unfortunately, he's got too many patients and cannot provide customer service. It's almost impossible to schedule an appointment outside of school hours. Even after he cancelled an appointment, the next available after-school appt was 4 months out. This is my third kid in braces and I've never had such difficulty with making appointments. Stay away. Stay far away. read more

We went to Dr. Hughes for the first time, complimentary consultation for Invisalign. As soon as we walked in we were greeted promptly with a smile. We had already completed the forms online so we didn't have to do so in the office nor show our insurance card. First staff came to get us for the X-rays, then we sat down with accounting/finance representative along with Dr. Hughes and one of his colleague (forgot his name). After the visit with Dr. Hughes, we continue with the accounting representative and she explained all the details to Invisalign, pricing, how long the process would take, etc. all the staff members at Dr. Hughes office are very kind. The office is newly renovated inside with a fish tank filled with salt water fishes , very lovely to watch by the way. Office has free wi-Fi and area with monitors with video games. Kiddos or even adults who loves video games would love this place. If you live in the area and looking for a great orthodontist, give Dr. Hughes a visit. You will be very satisfied. read more

Find a new orthodontist! I cannot stand this office! It is impossible to schedule an appointment outside of school hours; as a high school junior taking several AP classes, missing schools to sit at the orthodontist for an hour and a half isn't an option. Dr. Hughes's practice is always overscheduled. 45-minute appointment? Yeah right! Let me break it down to you how the average appointment goes: 1. Check-in (this part isn't so bad, the receptionist is very friendly and sincere). 2. Wait. Generally, I sit in the waiting room for 15-30 minutes before being seen. 3. More wait. Once I am taken back into the treatment area, I generally sit in the chair for ten or so minutes before any orthodontics take place. 4. Treatment (which is almost exclusively done by the clinical assistants). 5. Yet more wait. Once the clinical assistants are done performing the orthodontics, I sit in the chair and wait for 10-30 minutes for Dr. Hughes to mosey on over. He bounces from chair to chair performing checks toward the end of appointments or when brackets need to be put on. I find him to be extremely unpleasant and quite frankly not very gentle when working on my teeth. I am so put off by how he runs his practice. To elaborate on that, Dr. Hughes's office is open most Tuesdays through Fridays....that is, when he is not on vacation. Think you are smart and schedule appointments for teacher workdays or school holidays? Think again! Because he will cancel them due to a last minute vacation (I have had this happen not once, but twice). Having trouble with a wire or break a bracket on a Thursday night or on a Friday? You are out of luck!!! You'd be lucky to get that fixed on next Tuesday! Overall, I am very dissatisfied with the treatment I have recieved here. Dr. Hughes does not care about his individual patients. All he sees when you walk through his office's glass doors is another bag of money. read more

Outstanding professional staff. Exceptionally reasonable by comparison, with affordable financial payment options. I would not have been able to afford braces. I am over 60 years old and am now on my way to beautiful straight teeth. In the waiting area there is complimentary coffee, tea, toothbrushes, wifi, video games and current magazines for browsing. The office is bright, clean with free parking available. Staff is cheerful, welcoming and has a great rapport working with kids and teens. I am fortunate that I was referred to Dr Hughes and his staff from a friend. APlus Plus read more

I like Dr. Hughes as a person. I adore his front desk staff (they are usually BUSY but ALWAYS friendly) and I like his clinical staff too. Today, I'm IRRITATED with the way I feel I've been treated as a patient recently and today's visit put me over the edge. I am a middle-aged patient, not a child, and I went to him following the advice of my dentist to have my top teeth realigned so I can have a crown replaced. Initially, Dr. Hughest told me 8 - 10 months in braces and I'd be good to go. I believed him and I paid him his fee up front. My top teeth realigned fairly quickly. Currently, I am in month TWENTY. This morning I had an appointment for "Final Detail" and after I sat in his chair waiting for him for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES into my appointment time (facing the wall like a punished child), he tells me he still doesn't see progress. Really? I asked him why not and he said "you aren't wearing your rubber bands enough." BS!!! I wear them 24/7 taking them off only to brush, floss and eat for at least SIX MONTHS. This is probably the 4th visit in a row that he's seen no progress and we've argued over whether I'm wearing my rubber bands or not. and he hasn't changed his course of treatment. At my last dental appointment, my dentist told me if these braces aren't taken off soon I'm going to have serious gum issues. I explained this to Dr. Hughes this morning. In one ear and out the other, in my opinion. He then said he could do a procedure called IPR and I reminded him that 4 months ago he told me I'm not a candidate for IPR and his reply was "I can now see ... and I'm sure IPR will help you." Why wouldn't it have helped last month or the month before? I told him I no longer trust him and my braces will be removed next month because I can not afford to lose gum tissue because he repeats the same treatment over and over even though it didn't work the first time. I honestly believe he does not re-evaluate his options when he is not achieving success but instead blames the patient for not wearing rubber bands even when they are!!! I feel if I had not lost patience today he would not have suggested the IPR or instructed his tech to be more aggressive with today's treatment. He doesn't explain to me what he's doing to my mouth or what he's instructing his tech to do and what outcome is expected so when his tech asked him a question today, he answered it and I asked for clarification. He clarified and then said "I was talking to [his tech who shall remain nameless]". Wow! I'm sure he saw my blood pressure shoot up because he replied "but that was a fair question." I felt chastised for asking a question about my mouth. I feel I have the right to ask questions and be included in the decision process regarding what is going to happen with my mouth. At several appointments a tech has explained to Dr. Hughes that I am over my estimated treatment time and "we need to get her out of here." His techs are good so I'm pretty sure they are trying to stear him but the choice of words can make a patient feel unwanted even though I really want to get out of there. When I first started seeing Dr. Hughes he had early morning and evening appointments suitable for working adults. He's done away with the evening appointments and the early morning appointments are encouraged to be reserved for school children with adults expected to wait until after 8:00 for appointments. His office hours are now: Monday 8:00 - 5:30; Tuesday and Wednesday 7:00 - 5:30; Thursday 7:00 - 3:00 and CLOSED on Friday. This is near impossible for a commuting working professional to serve their clients while seeking treatment from Dr. Hughes especially when he does not see his appointments on time. The last buses to the Pentagon leave the Springfield Park & Rides by 9:00 a.m. When the last bus is missed the patient has no choice but to pay an outrageous fee to park at the Metro. Since I was delayed by his tardiness today, finding a parking space at the Metro was not an option so I had to drive to downtown DC (fighting traffic all the way and I don't even want to think about what traffic will be like going home tonight), drive around looking for a parking garage that was not full, pay $20 to park and then walk 4 blocks to my office wearing a walking cast on my foot. When I got to work, achy foot/leg and all, I was chastised because I was not here to meet with my appointments scheduled for late this morning so they had to be rescheduled - all because Dr. Hughes' tardiness delayed my arrival at my office. I advised my supervisor that I was accused of sabotaging my successful treatment by not wearing my rubber bands and she said "he can call me if he wants because I'll verify it." My braces will be removed next month because I've had enough of not being taken seriously. In my opinion, the worst insult you can give someone is to make an appointment with them and then fail to keep it without a good reason. read more

First of all, I would like to stay that I have many friends who faired well with Dr Hughes treatment. I was a patient of his for 5-6 Years and throughout those years I never got a good grasp of where I was in treatment and when it was going to be over. It ended with me asking to have my braces taken off because after 6 years I had no idea why they were still on and Dr Hughes still couldn't tell me when my treatment would be over. Every dentist I have gone to since then has told me I would be a great candidate for orthodontics and when I tell them I had orthodontics for 6 years, they are shocked. Now, the roots of my teeth and half what they were because of prolonged wearing of braces which means I probably will lose them in the future. It has been over 8 years since I got my braces off and I have seen other orthodontists, all of whom tell me I absolute need jaw surgery (although invasive). I wonder why Dr Hughes never told me that? Could explain why 6 years of appliances and braces never worked... and at what point was he even going to tell me that? I have no idea if it's because I had an extreme bite case or what but I definitely felt like I was put through the wringer and that he was not honest with me and was not invested in giving me the right care for my problems. I am paying for it now and will continue to as I age. I would like to say that the office staff was absolutely lovely and friendly and I received great care from the orthodontic assistants. read more

Dr. Hughes is really impressive! I lost my retainer for 2 years and my teeth moved to the point where they looked as if I never had braces before. Dr. Hughes was able to re-straighten my teeth with a new retainer and without me needing to get braces all over again. He really delivers Celebrity Quality smiles! I highly recommend! read more

So, after my treatment from Dr. Hughes, I still had spaces in my teeth that he attempted to close with a wire retainer. This did not work, so he eventually told me that my it was the shape of my teeth and that's why my spaces weren't closing. He basically said I'd always have spaces. I eventually tried another orthodontist, Dr. Tisseront, in Reston that a coworker referred me to. I was immediately impressed with his office and staff. Though, Dr. Tisseront is a little more expensive, his service was great! My teeth are PERFECT! I'm really sorry I wasted money and time with Dr. Hughes. read more

Clean, friendly, efficient, caring, the latest technology. I'm so happy I did the research and found this place AND they took my government dental insurance. They do a thorough, free evaluation, and I trust them because I did one as well as my daughter, and they didn't recommend any work for me. My daughter went through about a year and a half of orthodontics -- would have been faster if she had worn her rubber bands as she was supposed to. Her teeth look beautiful. I really can't recommend them highly enough. The front desk staff aren't that great but the technicians and Dr. Hughes are the best! read more

I recently completed my time at Dr. Hughes Orthodontics and wanted to thank the team for my new smile. When I signed up, I imagined nothing more than a routine tightening and corrections of my bite; however, while I was there, the whole staff was very attentive to my needs and made me feel right at home. I'd like to say a special thanks to Grace who helped to adjust my teeth alongside Dr. Hughes and Dr. Jordan. She made my experience with Dr. Hughes Orthodontics especially comforting. In the beginning of my braces journey, I worked with multiple technicians. During a couple of my initial check ups, some of the technicians had cut the wire too short or too long, causing for me to feel discomfort or for the wire to pop out prematurely. During one of my check ups, I had the pleasure of working with Grace and noticed that she went above and beyond when attending to my needs. Each time after she was complete with inserting or adjusting a new wire for me, she used a mirror to confirm that the wire was cut correctly AND she also used her own gloved hands to feel around my brackets to make sure that I was not disturbed by the installation of my wire. I felt very impressed by her professionalism and attentiveness. The other technicians I'd worked with prior to her did not do that and sometimes caused me discomfort. After a couple of initial rotations of technicians, I felt that Grace was most attentive to my needs and began asking specifically for her to help with my routine check ups. In addition to Grace's attentiveness, her bubbly personality and smile were always a great addition. Between Grace, Dr. Hughes, and Dr. Jordan's care, my concerns were always answered quickly and my bite adjusted correctly. I'm happy to say that after 1 year I can now smile confidently [1/2 to 1 year ahead of schedule] and thank the Dr. Hughes Orthodontics crew for their help along my journey. Thanks for everything! read more

I began my treatment plan with Dr.Hughes in August 2011 and am nearing the end of my treatment. I'm so excited and definitely looking forward to the removal of my braces! Since my first visit to this establishment, I took notice of the especially outgoing and friendly staff. The early morning appts are made easier by this perky staff! The only request I would make is for more of a prompt consultation based on time of arrival/ appointment time. Overall, however, I'm certain that I made a GREAT investment in Hughes Orthodontics. read more

Absolutely wonderful with visible results already. My son had an initial consultation last year but was recommended to delay the braces for two more years. My son was a little self conscious about his teeth so we came back a year later which was this past December. I expressed my sons concern to Dr. Hughes and he came up with an effective plan which showed results within weeks. My son has a confident smile now even with the braces on. Thank you Dr. Hughes. They were able to fix some serious bite issues as well as straighten his teeth for phase 1. Their office is fantastic and the administrative staff do an awesome job as well. I really adore Dr. Hughes and his staff. My BIG complaint though is that in the almost two years that we've been going, they have yet to take us on time. Even at a 9:00 a.m. appointment, we were seen half an hour late. We have never been tardy to the office, and while I do understand that emergencies arise, the habitual lateness with being seen (and it's always at least 20 minutes) has grown tiresome. I need braces myself, but will not go to him without a guarantee that I'll be seen on time. As a mother, volunteer, and full-time employee, my time is valuable too. read more

I came to Dr. Hughes because my dentist told me that I needed to fix my alignment and I wanted to get an orthodontist's opinion as well as go through a professional to have any work done instead of just having my dentist do it. From the moment I walked in, the entire team was welcoming and friendly. Their professionalism and clear experience made me feel comfortable and confident in their diagnosis and treatment recommendations. I interacted with Diane, Marcia and Samantha as they prepared me and got everything in order before seeing Dr. Hughes. Dr. Hughes listened to my concerns and presented me with all of my options before we settled on a treatment plan. Afterwards, Samantha even helped me find a new dentist since I was in the market for one! Overall, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a warm and welcoming team that I have confidence in. The greater DC area is full of medical offices and I have had many experiences where I wasn't comfortable or confident in the medical team that I was seeing -- but Dr. Hughes and his staff are a welcome departure from that and stand out and above all the rest! Our twin boys, Max and Nick, first saw Dr. Hughes and his staff in second grade. We took advantage of their free initial consultation offer and had a very thorough first visit to Dr. Hughes' office. We left with a folder containing various pictures and x-rays of their teeth and the instructions to come back once their 12 year molars had emerged. At the end of sixth grade we then brought them back for another free consultation and our boys were once again given a very extensive examination and this time also a comprehensive treatment plan with several payment options. Over the years we had met many former patients of Dr. Hughes and heard nothing but praise from parents as well as kids so we went ahead and had the boys fitted for braces during the summer break. Over the next 22 months, Dr. Hughes, Dr. Mascia and the staff were always extremely courteous and kind to our boys as well as to us. Having braces can be painful at times, but my boys always looked forward to their visits to Dr. Hughes and his friendly staff.
