I started seeing Ned when I'd decided that after becoming pretty competent in Rock Band, I might actually try learning for real. I've always thought about drumming but never pursued it. In the past year not only has Ned inspired a love of drumming I never knew I could have, my technique and skills have vastly improved. Not only can I handle an acoustic set with confidence, I can kill at Rock Band now too :). I would recommend Ned for anyone in the greater Seattle area who is looking for a holistic drum teaching experience.

However, it turns out my son started to favor symphonic band and orchestral playing. Ned adjusted his lessons to now cover not only rock and roll drumming, but things like proper tympani technique and snare drum rudiments, including drum corps and marching band techniques. Ned also helped him prepare for All State band and orchestra auditions. The end result was 3 years in all state in high school, and 4 years on the drum line at UW.

Unfortunately, we didn't even get to the point of having a single lesson with Vision Music Live because of an outrageous and mind-boggling billing dispute. Just two weeks after my initial conversation with Winston McFarlane and before we were even able to schedule a first lesson, I received an email from Vickie Bona, VML's Accountant, stating "We have received your payment in the amount of $195.00" charged to my credit card for two 60-minute lessons that were never even scheduled. Note: Not only does the VML contract say nothing about any policy that would explain this charge, but I honestly don't think I even signed it. I certainly can't find any record of doing so. When I saw the invoice, I assumed it was just an internal mis-communication or clerical error, so I replied back to Vickie asking her to reverse the charge and hold off until we get our daughter's extra-curricular schedule sorted out. I never heard back from her, so I finally wrote to Vickie again last week asking her to reverse the charge. Then Winston called and left a voice-message on my phone, and I called him back. We proceeded to have a heated argument that went nowhere, and he flat-out refused to provide a refund. In the end, I successfully disputed the charge with my credit card company, but I also felt compelled to file a complaint with the State AG and the Better Business Bureau to help others avoid a similar unpleasant experience. Ironically, had Winston simply provided a refund, I'm sure we would have reset and figured out a lesson plan for my daughter, and I would have happily paid him 100x the disputed charge over the course of the next several years. It's a sad conclusion to a bizarre situation.

My daughter's interest in guitar has since expanded to other stringed instruments including cello, stand up bass, and electric bass, and she's now heavily involved in her school's orchestra program. Overall, I credit Winston with helping spark her passion in music, which is exactly what I wanted. I've since signed up my son for guitar lessons as well. It's still too early to see if he will engage to the degree that my daughter did, but lessons with Winston have been a positive experience for him nonetheless.

Abruptly ending 2+ years of lessons, via email, with a 6 year old, without prior discussion is unforgivable. Not responding to a request for discussion on this abrasive decision is rude. It is possible to end lessons or deal with challenges with grace, however that requires her to make an effort. Shannon's tactless actions speak louder than her inadequate words. Original review below: Our 6 year old son, Alexander studied with Shannon Keeler at Puget Sounds Piano School for over 2 years. This past week, 2 days after our normal weekly lesson, Shannon unexpectedly terminated the lessons, effective immediately with 0 notice, via email, no goodbyes permitted, stating that we would not be able to study from any instructors at the school. We followed up immediately requesting to discuss since this was such a surprise. At a minimum we wanted to allow Alexander to say goodbye. We never heard back from Shannon. The lack of empathy and professionalism from a teacher dealing with children every day is repugnant! We explained to Alexander that Shannon had become too busy to teach him and that he would not be able to say goodbye to her. Alexander was in tears all night. Shannon broke Alexander's heart by discarding our family like it was a piece of trash. Shannon's reasoning for terminating lessons in the email was that she can't teach Alexander "in her own way". She mentions "You have definite ideas about his studies, and they contradict mine." My wife and I have both taught piano in the past. We mentioned our background to Shannon to assure her we could help at home if necessary given Alexander struggles at school occasionally. We never challenged or contradicted anything Shannon taught. There was no discussion of the challenges Shannon was encountering prior to termination via email. We help Alexander with piano a minimal amount at home; mostly making sure that he spends 10 minutes practicing most days. Our goals for piano lessons are to expose him to music, have fun, pick up some discipline along the way and learn how to work through some of the challenges encountered. I'm not pushing for him to pursue music as a career or to be a virtuoso. Given these goals are incompatible with Shannon's ideas is incredulous. It is clear that she is insecure and intimidated about having a parent who can independently assess and assist with fostering their child's musical growth. Shannon has a pretty standard contract that parents are required to sign which states if we decide to quit we need to give her 2 weeks notice. It also says: "We are very open to hearing your opinions about your or your student's musical experience. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any observations, questions or concerns. We shall attempt to return all calls and emails within 24 hours." Shannon violated each aspect of this contract. With no sign of the "drumming" abating, I went to the SoR to see about real drum lessons for Felix. We had an honest and friendly conversation about how most five-year olds are not mature enough to learn much from drum instruction yet... they come in, bang on the drums, have a fantastic time, and maybe they will remember the names of the drums and cymbals. He said that with that info, if we want to enroll Felix, he's sure the drum instructor would be glad to have him and would do his best to help Felix have fun AND learn something... but don't have high expectations. He suggested an awesome alternative that they offer just for preschoolers... their eight-week Little Wing program (awesome name, btw). Skilled preschool teachers walk the kids through an intro to music, an intro to guitars, an intro to the bass, making their own guitar, intro to the drum kit, making their own drum kit, intro to the keyboard, making their own keyboard, intro to voice, recording their voices, sound detectives (headphones), and band rehearsal. They have small class sizes and at $160 for 8 one-hour sessions, it's a real bargain. I was so glad that they suggested this more age-appropriate program... he could have sold me a month of lessons for more $, and we would be less happy in the long run. Once Felix is old enough for proper drum lessons (age 7 - 8), if he's still interested, we'll be back at the School of Rock.
