He was getting bored with math in…read moreSeattle Public Schools, and found that the math taught at RSM was much more intellectually stimulating-- the classes moved faster, the teachers went deeper into the subjects, and there was an emphasis on problem-solving. I felt that the teachers and principles saw my son as a person and sincerely tried to advise the best for him when it came to class sequencing. They were responsive to my questions and always got back to me. One year, when we were trying to decide which classes to take, one of the teachers even created a powerpoint specific to my son and scheduled a zoom conference so that the three of us could go over it together. I am grateful to RSM for making math fun for my son, when the public schools were not. Also, as a side note, there are some very excellent Chinese restaurants and a Mercury's coffee to eat at while waiting for your child during their math class!

Huntington has a great system where your child takes a practice ACT and SAT with them, and based on the results, they make a study plan for whichever test plays to your child's strengths. I loved the flexibility in their scheduling and the ease of the process. My daughter met with her tutor once or twice a week, and they went over the homework he'd given her. Your child will have homework and will need to do it to improve. Will you be out of town here and there over the summer? No problem. They build the schedule around your availability. Here's my favorite part about Huntington. They let you take lots of practice tests that are actual ACT tests from prior years. (Lots and lots of tests!) A few things that have worked well for my son: - Much more personalized attention and learning at his level. He was able to up-level in classes where he had capabilities and has gotten more support where he needed it. This was a very welcome change to public school where he always felt like things were too hard or too easy. If there is a concern, teachers are very responsive. - The inquiry based teaching method has been so great for him. It seems as though they learn with more depth and interest. The teachers have more freedom to adapt to the needs and interests of the class vs having a set curriculum that they are required to deliver. - The community is very tightknit and welcoming. Though the classes are small, but they build community and social connections across grades, and there are lots of chances for parent connection if you want it (and it's okay if you don't) The school is welcoming to both Jewish and non-Jewish families. My son has fit in well despite not knowing much about Judaism before joining this community. He really enjoys the Jewish Studies class where he learns about Jewish history and values within a broader context. For example my son's current unit is about The Universals of Culture. An excerpt from the newsletter described "Students learned about Greek and Roman art, burial practices of the ancient Sumerians, the development of cuneiform writing, the economy of Ancient China and how we celebrate holidays develops using The Fourth of July as an example". They then used that along with Jewish readings as background for a project where they build a culture of their own. It's been super engaging, and thought-provoking.

The school has a very low student to teacher ratio. The school also has a multi-year rotating curriculum, so if you send your kid for more than one year they will be learning something new the following year. We've tried larger and fancier Montessori schools in the past with our oldest kid. We were sad that we didn't discover this gem of a school earlier.

They work really hard to provide a great Pre-K experience, in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to learning . They follow Montessori methodology and teach the kids life skills like independent play, cleaning up after yourself and sharing. They provide excellent communication, and focus on each child as an individual and are willing to take the difficult conversations. One of our kids also struggled with focus and following directions and even though we didn't always see eye-to-eye on how to handle situation that arose at school, the important part is that Morningstar staff worked closely with us, we communicated and discussed concerns and took the time to understand perspectives. As parents we want the best for our kids, and sometimes that also means making sure our kids are also contributing to that environment for the other kids and not taking away from that. It is not an easy balance to reach, but having a school that cares and works with the family to get it right is greatly appreciated.

He became an expert in geography, knows how to read and write and has the basics of math down. He also learned how to be a great student and classmate. We are forever grateful to Ms. Madhuri, Ms. Deepti, Ms. Helen and all of the others at Morningstar. Sullivan will miss them greatly.
