I figured I'd give it one more shot now that we recently moved from Bellevue to the Plateau/Highlands area. I purchased a bargain voucher for six sessions for one subject, admittedly not expecting much. (hint: their name ends with "on") Originally learned about this BIC location during kids' swimming class when I saw a pair of third graders doing their BIC tutoring homework in the bleachers. When I ran into a former neighbor of mine on our second week, I knew I might be onto something. The Issaquah location is open three times a week (Tue, Thur, Sun) and is managed by Mr Victor Ho. Victor also started a new Wednesday sessions at the EX3 Teen & Rec Center on the Samm. Plateau. BIC "Enrichment Courses" are divided into English and Math subject. Each session is 75 minutes long for one subject. Victor Students seems to be grouped by age/grade You have several students under the supervision of an adult teacher, and the students are expected to work on their own, "study hall" style, until they are stuck or otherwise have a question. Private tutoring this is not. Most of the hard work is at home, where the parents have to establish ad maintain a daily study routine for each kid. I've also noticed lot of anxious parents prepping their 6-8 year olds for the Cogat and achievement exams (I'm no sure if the latter is ITBS or Stanford10). Basically it's whatever BSD, ISD and LWSD are dishing out. I have no opinion on this particular offering, other than that it's popular and probably worth checking out if that's your focus. Ultimately, what sets the Issaquah operation apart is the dedication and accessibility of the branch manager, who has been receptive to and patient with my many questions and concerns about our kids progress (or sometimes, the lack thereof). Victor has been willing to tweak things so we can emphasize topics where there are gaps in understanding or merely insufficient mastery. Vic is also eager to hear about any errors / typos in the problem sets, as well as of any subpar tutoring sessions. As you'd expect, the tutoring competition is stiff on the Eastside but they seem to be thriving. Don't let their unassuming exterior and frankly, dingy interior fool you -- what they save on rent / furniture, they pass on the savings to you! (Seriously, BIC rates are lower than our previous tutoring programs.) This is a system that appears to be working for our children.

My 3rd grader finished all of the 3rd grade math curriculum and her teacher was struggling to supplement her learning (and she really, really tried- her teacher was awesome! I don't want anyone to think otherwise! I think she is the reason my child got through it so fast!) I really did not want my 8 year old to not learn more math for 6 months! That would be like 6 months of not reading. Most of the other programs I checked out were for students who needed help in math to bring them up to standard. Mathnasium was the only program I found to help a students that loved math and needed more! My daughter loves, loves, loves it! I do really like Kumon, as a student it helped me a lot and allowed for me to catch up get 2 years…read moreahead on math (qualified for a program, didn't do well beginning of year, then went to Kumon and it helped be at the level I was supposed to be) and helped me easily understand things that are being taught to me faster. The reason why I quit was because of the head of the teaching, Ms. Janet. She always were to try to make things better and make it worse, treats everyone like a little child, as in you get 9 mistakes and she'll say, "Good job honey! I'm so proud of you." Do things like when you come in and tell you "Sweetie you have to say hi to me everytime you come in, come on, say it." Even if you haven't said hi and just did a wave for a while and that had became the norm. Ms. J will also give you a smile (a kind of uncanny one) and tell you "Box your answers sweetheart." When you've told her weeks on end that you will, when you finish your packet. Texts randomly sometimes, either about something unrelated or about how the parent is helping their child with their math (when they told Ms. Janet they showed their child how to do what they're learning. Mainly, Ms. J just really pisses me (and my mother + brother) off. For now I'm just going to use other resources or continue Kumon at another place in Seattle.

Great program! I…read moreespecially like the "Critical Thinking" portion of the math booklets. Instead of just learning math, it helps kids to solve problems. No kids like more homework (maybe some do, but not mine). My method is to have them do their Eye Level homework daily (takes 15~30 min) and I reward them with their choice of free time. She is constantly updating parents with their kids progress and encourages the kids a lot. She is also very accommodating if there is some rescheduling required. The program is great and helps kids build good study habits. The critical thinking makes kids use data analysis which is so important and a great exercise for the brain. My son is so confident in Math and is doing very well in class. When we had joined eye level his Writing English was okay, but he has come a long long way... he has shown great improvement and doing great in school. Eye level has been a huge blessing and we plan on sticking with this.

The assessments don't necessarily match what is taught in schools and I feel a good portion of our summer session is spent just trying to figure out where exactly she's at math-wise. With Huntington's help, my daughter got a 36 on her ACT after working with them for just two…read moremonths. I highly recommend Huntington in Issaquah for test prep. Huntington has a great system where your child takes a practice ACT and SAT with them, and based on the results, they make a study plan for whichever test plays to your child's strengths. I loved the flexibility in their scheduling and the ease of the process. My daughter met with her tutor once or twice a week, and they went over the homework he'd given her. Your child will have homework and will need to do it to improve. Will you be out of town here and there over the summer? No problem. They build the schedule around your availability. Here's my favorite part about Huntington. They let you take lots of practice tests that are actual ACT tests from prior years. (Lots and lots of tests!) Taking a dozen practice tests and going over them with the tutor is what really helped my daughter get that perfect score. Thank you to everyone at Huntington!
