The SO always mentioned wanting to stop by Dave's Hot Chicken when go to Costco. We finally decided to stop last week. We ordered one tender and two 10-piece bites - all hot. They were indeed spicy hot, but I was disappointed that the heat came from being sprinkled with chili power which resulted in a very uneven result. Some bites were overly hot and others were blah. All of our chicken was greasy. (Yes, I know it is fried chicken but our's seemed like the oil wasn't hot enough so the batter absorbed a lot of oil.) Beyond the grease, the chicken was incredibly salty. As it turns out, one tender has 50% of what should be your day's intake of sodium. The service was fine. I am a huge fan of the Honey BBQ Chicken Bites, but I'm told that the Buffalo Chicken is also great. We ask for crispy so they don't turn out a bit soggy. The first time we had it, we went a bit safe because we never had Dave's before and wasn't sure how hot each level was. We ordered some sliders with a range of spice levels, from medium, extra hot, and reaper. We also got one hot tender. I can say that the medium and hot was not spicy and that's coming from someone who can't handle spice that well. I was a little too confident thinking I could handle the reaper because the other levels weren't spicy.... what a mistake because my mouth was on fire. My partner considers himself as the spice king and didn't think the reaper was spicy and only gave a little kick. He rated it a 2/10 on the spice. First off, the gentleman at the counter was very friendly and helpful. I told him I have a pretty high spicy tolerance, and asked him if I'd be ok with the "hot" spiciness level. The food was good, well prepared. Chicken was juicy, the crinkle fries were hot and crispy. The extra pickle chips on the side were crunchy and tasty. I could've gone to Extra Hot and Reaper, but I didn't want my mouth to go numb. The Hot appeared to have a kind of red chili oil like what you saw at KFC extra hot wings. The Hot tasted earthy like cayenne pepper. It added a slight oiliness. So the Hot really didn't add flavor. I prefer the grassy or fruity taste of serrano, jalapeno and habanero. If you want your Hot to bring flavor, this doesn't. It does bring the novelty of heat. If you just like heat with your food, this is the place. The heat stayed on the lips, gums and tongue for about 45 minutes. I might go back to try Medium heat to see if they use a different chili for heat. If they don't then I will be done. I went at 1:30 on Thursday to get away from the noon crowds. It was crawling with teeny boppers. Lot's of squealing girls and guffawing boys with their underwear showing from their drooping pants. Too raucous for me. Not sure where they all came from since this was at the strip mall across the main freeway from any neighborhood. Probably abandoned by soccer moms who went shopping. My coworkers decided the grand opening was the perfect place to order our weekly lunch. What they didn't know was how long the line would be. Went past the gate the entire time I was there. The wall decor/paintings are really cute, the tables were nicely spaced as well. They have a large table that could fit 8-10 people, perfect place for hanging out. They were giving away little chicken keychains or temp tattoos for their opening. The staff are all very nice and patient. I ordered a lot of items and they only got one thing wrong, that's pretty good considering I typically have more wrong when we order for the office (min 7 people and up to 12). I got the food quicker than I expected. I was waiting about 25 minutes for an order of $150+ for 7 meals. The food is as good as it gets and I'm so happy more places are opening up in Novato! The Carolina reaper isn't as hot as I remember but I have been eating ghost pepper daily so I'm not surprised. My coworker was tearing up after having a small bite of my sandwich he cut off. Although I really love bone-in fried chicken, my daughter insisted I try Dave's for lunch. Well, I wasn't disappointed - and I'll tell you next time my wife and I will split a single order since you can ask for different spice levels for each piece! The bread is a bit funny, I guess it's there to sop up any leftover grease from the fryer? But the chicken was the star - we ordered very spicy and the second from most mild, and I thought the spicy was VERY spicy, even the mild had a nice kick to it, but overall the taste way terrific. OK. So I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed Dave's Hot Chicken. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised -- I mean, it's a deep fried, spicy chicken sandwich, so it should be good. You say "deep fried, spicy chicken sandwich" to someone, and one would assume that it is tasty. How could it not? But it's not that simple. I've had plenty of fried, spicy chicken sandwiches in my days... and just because it's a fried, spicy chicken sandwich, it doesn't automatically mean that it's good. For years, I worked around the corner from "The Bird" in SOMA San Francisco, a fried chicken sando place that would have a 50-person line during lunchtime. I hate lines, so I refused to stand in it, but then a co-worker and I tried it after work one day, and it was honestly pretty underwhelming considering the hype. I've tried the OTHER hot chicken place in Novato... is average. And so when I saw that Dave's Hot Chicken was coming to Vintage Oaks, I was thinking... really?! Do we really need TWO Hot Chicken places in Novato, when there are so many other foods to specialize in that Novato does not have?! But then, we were driving home a few days ago from visiting family, when I was feeling too lazy to cook. My hubs suggested we try Dave's Hot Chicken, and so we did. Oh man... THIS is a hot chicken sandwich. I got the chicken slider + fries combo for $9.99, which is a great deal for Novato. You get a sizable fried chicken sandwich (they say slider, but it was more than enough for me) dusted with spice with cheese on top (+$1), coleslaw, and pickles between a fluffy potato bun. It was seriously really good. It was crunchy, juicy chicken, and the perfect amount of spice for me (I got medium). Some other places, the outer crunch is good, but the chicken is dry or flavorless, or the chicken is moist, but it's all limpy -- this place hit the mark on all areas -- crunch, flavorful, juicy... and the coleslaw and pickles offset the spice and grease... then all with wrapped in fluffiness. It was everything right. The fries were good, nothing too notable, but definitely not bad at all. The only complaint that my hubs had was the lack of sauces. He disliked that we were given packets when we were eating-in.... he felt like it was wasteful to not have dispensable ketchup. He's also a ranch freak, which they did not have which was disappointing to him... though they gave us extra packets of Dave's Hot Chicken sauce. So yeah... very dangerous to have such a tasty hot chicken place near by, especially since it's so affordable. Will be back soon! read more

They are very generous with their portions here; the tenders are humungous and juicy. I believe all the tenders come with a slice of bread. I can handle very spicy foods but I enjoy the flavor more than the pain, so the medium was perfect for me. The sauce looks like it has a ketchup, mayo, mustard base; it is both sweet and tangy. This place is in an excellent location with ample parking, right by In and Out in Vintage Oaks. You may not get a spot right up front but you can park in the shade and walk over, it's not bad. They have indoor and outdoor seating and the chairs are comfortable and cute, lots of umbrellas outside which will be nice in the summer. It was kind of loud inside so we hung out outside. They were packed but we walked right up and a register opened up. The menu is straightforward, tenders or sliders and you can choose your levels of heat. When they say no spice that's for the kids. When they say extra hot it's for the adults, and it's hot. Trust. Tenders come with pickles and a piece of bread and some Dave's sauce. Sliders are same but with a bun and slaw. They have combos and you can get both if you like. Fries are delicious, like a crinkle cut and lightly seasoned and perfect. We got a bunch of things to try and while the Hot was too much for me, I had to set it down. Twice. The extra hot was tasty and well seasoned per my husband and teen. We didn't try the reaper. All of the chicken was cooked well, juicy on inside and crispy crunchy on outside. Large pieces too, well flavored and seasoned all over. Pickles are really good and helped to cut the heat, the slaw was also cooling and tangy. My son who is a self-proclaimed chicken tender expert gave this two big thumbs up. When I ordered they offer multiple levels of hotness. I got the "hot". Verdict: it was hot. I almost choked on some peppery stuff on my first bite. It wasn't death defying hot but neared stuntman levels of hot. I finally figured out that that the best solution was to squeeze some honey on the chicken and pick it up with the white bread. Still, my stomach is a little upset an hour or so later and I fear tomorrow morning. I thought the food was just ok and overly expensive. I used to be a huge addict for Dave's- until a few days ago, when I went to order my favorite menu item, mini sliders. To my shock, they had disappeared from their menu. So, I ordered their regular slider with fries meal. I got it to go, as usual. When I got home and opened the box, I found half as much food as used to be for this item. Half the fries, the slider was half the size it used to be. All without informing their regular customers that their portions were now half of what they used to be, for the same price. The timing of this massive price hike was unbelievable. The federal government has just blocked payment of food stamps (SNAP) payments to millions, including myself. I can no longer afford to pay double for what used to be a good value for food from Dave's. I will NEVER buy food there again, no matter how good it is. It is unconscionable that a company would raise their prices to unsuspecting customers without warning, during the worst financial crisis in American history. Perhaps this had to do with the company being acquired by Roark Capital just a few months ago. I decided to try it and it was pretty darn good for being cauliflower!! I am a huge fan of Hot Boys so the bar is pretty high for chicken sandwiches. The location has plenty of parking. There was quite a line when I went even on a week day around 11:30 am but got my order in after about 15 min wait. I ordered: Mild Chicken Slider: The chicken is really crunchy and moist. I love this place. Always hot, on time, and perfectly prepared. I order on the app and collect points for my purchases. I have a free sandwich and shake ready for redemption.
