Datz is different, no question. I've had most of the menu, but the oxtail and jerk chicken are the ones I keep going back to. The oxtail is the crowd favorite for a reason super rich, deep flavor that just sits right. Comfort food but dialed all the way up. my personal favorite is the jerk chicken. They are known for their Caribbean offerings, most famous of which is their different beef patty sandwich creations, which come with mac & cheese and your desired meat selection. We came here on a Friday night around 7pm looking for a quick dinner. We arrived and it's a small store. There is a counter to order and one table with seating (there is an outlet also) and 3 metal bar stools. There is not a lot of room here for alot of people. We wanted to order a jerk chicken sandwich with a chicken patty with Mac and cheese on the side. Despite what is written, adding Mac and cheese to their meal deals cost extra. They actually ran out of chicken and beef patties when we arrived and therefore could not give us a sandwich that we were hoping to order. In return the lady at the counter said we can get a little bit of Mac and cheese without paying extra (she gave very little not a full sides worth) which was nice but also somewhat disappointing. As for the jerk chicken over rice itself. The rice and the collard greens were quite unflattering to be honest. Not much flavor. The rice with beans was not bad just felt a bit bland to me. The jerk chicken itself was some of the better jerk chicken I have tried. They did not hold back on the spices and it was quite spicy which I do appreciate. They have quite a lot of quantity, I could not finish my whole meal. Although I didn't think this meal was spectacular, for 18 dollars it's quite alot of food. The sandwich was pretty good albeit smaller than one would expect. A lil pricey for the size. The patty was of superior quality than than handful I got to try in my short NY trip. Very flakey just wish there was more of it in the sandwich. The oxtail sauce on the top didn't really add much to the flavor of the sandwich and kinda just made it more difficult to eat but I see the vision and a tweak to how it's served or consistency would go a long way. I had 24 hours in NYC and I had to visit Datz deli! Datz Deli stay popping up on Instagram! I visited the one on Clinton street. This one is very small. There is no seating area. We got to try their famous oxtail sandwich. The sandwich I had braised oxtail with Mac and cheese within a beef patty and wrapped in coconut bread. This was a big sandwich and SO DELISH! The owners were also super nice, we got to speak to them for a bit and they recommend that we try the jerk chicken next time. The sandwich also came with a fried plantain.
