I was a little worried based on some of the reviews, but decided to give it a try because the friend I was having lunch with wanted to try it. We arrived at 12:30 on a Sunday and the place was empty...more worried....I ordered the gumbo and was pleasantly surprised by the flavorful sausage and tender chicken in a nicely seasoned thick soup served over rice. The buttery toasted bread seemed the same as that served at the Indianapolis chain that bears a similar name. The quality of my gumbo was also similar to that Indianapolis chain. I don't know if maybe Dats went through a rough patch a couple of years ago and that they've now stabilized things? Service was fast, and the mardi gras decor was fun.

One word, delicious. Service was excellent. It's in a grocery shop/slash pick up order environment but has seating and tables on the next to it. It actually works surprisingly. The food wasn't spicy but flavored. Definitely recommend. Dessert was delicious

The only thing DATS has going for it is price. You can basically eat two meals for $6 - $7. However, it's like eating empty calories and does not do Cajun/Creole food justice. I ordered the gumbo and thai peanut etouffee. The gumbo was kind of just a brown slop - hardly had the developed flavors of a true gumbo. There was also nothing in it but meat really. Sure, that's the most bang for your buck, but I expect a gumbo to be chock full of okra, peppers, etc. The thai peanut etouffee was okay - it was all kind of just really salty. An entree also comes with some garlic bread, which was probably the tasty part of the meal. Oh, you can sample - just ask.

I've been to Dats multiple times and have always loved it. There locations all give off the same cozy vibe and I've never had a negative experience with any of their workers. The food is consistent and you know exactly how it's gonna taste every time. The bread they give you on the side balances the rich and spicy curries/gumbos. The chili cheese etoufee w/ crawfish is a classic and definitely their best in my opinion. Definitely in my top 5 Bloomington eats.

Awful. My food tasted like it was re-heated Spanish rice with hot dogs. I got the jambalaya entree. The only good thing was the self serve sauces. If you ever been to YATS, you will be immensely disappointed.

Chili cheese étouffée with crawfish. So much rice... would have loved more étouffée

It breaks my heart to give a 2 because this was a go-to back when I was in school. And YATS! in Indianapolis is one of my favorites... weren't these at one point the same... But the food was bland, the ratio of rice to étouffée was off (not enough étouffée) and it took awhile to get our food. My hope is that this visit was an anomaly. Unfortunately I don't get back to campus enough to risk it given all the other amazing restaurants in Btown.

You guys complain the serve? Yes ! ! ! I understand you ! ! ! Because there is no serve in Dat's= = Seriously... Not kidding... However, What you need to do is just focus on the food !!!!!! Its really delicious. Maybe is not fits for some people who seek for the classy ambience. You know, Dat's is a cheap restaurant.. But for the "eat-people".. woo.. you will never forget the dishes there. I would like to say that "Bourbon Chicken" is the best choice ! Like me, who have already moved from Bloomington to indy now. Always missing the food.. Every time I back to B-town.. I back to Dat's ... You should try. Please!

I love the food. Great small business, especially for a restaurant. People, everyone should try this place. Get the bourbon chicken.

I was a fan of Crazy Horse for years, but after today's awful experience, I will never be back…read more My friends and I arrived at 12:30pm today. Ordered mains after we received our appetizer. The restaurant became super crowded all of a sudden. While waiting for our mains, our waitress never checked on us even once. After almost AN ENTIRE HOUR of waiting for our food, we tried to ask the hostess (twice) and our waitress to check on our food. They were of ABSOLUTELY NO HELP AT ALL. They only said that "the kitchen was backed up and it would take a while". No offer to even check on our food, no understanding that we were hungry because we had been waiting for an hour. Food finally comes. My friend's burger is UNDERCOOKED. She has to send it back, and cancels her order entirely (declined a replacement burger). I asked to see a manager. Female manager comes. I told her we had waited for our food for an hour. She spoke to me with an attitude, and was not apologetic at all. She said "every seat in the house was full, the kitchen was busy, and there was nothing she could do about it". I said we had waited for AN HOUR. She repeated herself. I said my friend's burger was undercooked. She said that the kitchen cooked food " to the health code temperature" and she could take the burger off the bill. I asked for a discount on the food. She responded with a flat "No". No apology delivered, no empathy, no sense of customer service or hospitality. It was appalling. Female manager swings by 5 minutes later with the bill. She said she took 25% off our bill (and took the burger off as well). Contradicting what she said earlier. Our interaction with her was so rude and classless that even the patrons at the table next to us, said that the way she spoke to us was UNACCEPTABLE. The table next to us had been waiting for their appetizer for 25 minutes. The customer service was awful. I am disgusted and disappointed. I will never be back. Be respectful to college students - we are your clientele. I am certain she would not have spoken to me like that if I was a parent. If you can't handle a busy period during a game/parent weekend, don't do business in a college town.

It was 1:15 pm on a Tuesday so the dining rooms and bar were sparsely populated. I ordered the Fried Chicken Breast Sandwich with no mayo and added lettuce and tomato. The chicken was a big portion sticking way out of the bun. The rice was pretty good. My server was very attentive and brought out my check early like I asked so I could get going. I visited the restroom and it was really clean considering the lunch hour had just transpired. The floor was dry everywhere. The paper towel dispenser was stocked. One platter was supposed to have ribs, they weren't included, and rib tips were substituted with no communication. When we asked, we were told they didn't have any available. The tips were tough, full of fat and gristle, the waitress offered no remedy. I asked for flat cut brisket, that request wasn't followed. I got very fatty chunky portions that a lot of my party simply couldn't eat. The brisket had very little smoke flavor and didn't taste fresh. The "tenderloin" doesn't look like what's advertised, it's a thin, frozen, fried patty, and it was cold. The baked beans don't look as advertised either and tasted thin, like they came right out of a can. The penne mac and cheese was the worst, no flavor, not even cheese flavor, which is weird. It tasted like noodles in yellow water. The lemon icebox pie was frozen solid with a refrigerator taste. This item was forgotten from our order. When I brought it to the waitress's attention, she told me she'd given it to me separately, that wasn't true. I had laid out every item from my order on a table and didn't leave because I wanted to check accuracy, since we could hear other customers with the same issue of forgotten items. I genuinely don't know where the positive reviews are coming from. Everything was low quality. We were disappointed and feel taken advantage of, given the advertising versus what you actually get.
