The staff were really nice, they let my wife sample some ice cream before making a selection. She sample the French vanilla, cookie and cream and mint chocolate. She decided to go with the two flavors in a cup. She went with dark chocolate and the mint chocolate gelato. The presentation of the ice cream in a cup was great. The customers ahead of us were finishing up as we walked in. The young woman who helped us was quite friendly as she let us sample some flavors. I chose the small cup that allows for 2 scoops/flavors -- Pistachio and Strawberry Rhubarb. The husband had a medium cup for 3 scoops/flavors -- Cookies & Cream, Dulce de Leche and Lemon Cookie. Every flavor was just YUM -- so rich and creamy! The fresh ingredients come through in every bite. I love the super-cute decor. Organized and clean. They have a few bistro tables inside with small vases of fresh flowers. Since it was a beautiful day and we had an hour before our movie started, we opted to sit outside where we found many comfortable seating options. It was a great first experience at Tifa. We will absolutely come back to try other flavors and sweet treats...the macarons were especially tempting. :)

The dessert was just as good--soft, flavorful, and topped with the perfect crunch for contrast. You can tell Cafe 86 knows exactly what they're doing when it comes to ube. It's a great late-night dessert spot with a relaxed vibe and consistently solid quality. If you're an ube fan (or trying it for the first time), Cafe 86 is a must.

One thing to note: they open late--12:30 PM. Parking was easy, and there's a decent amount of seating inside. I happened to be the first customer of the day. Don't expect the warm, smiley Filipino hospitality right away--just head straight to the counter and place your order on the iPad. As for the halo-halo, it's definitely not your traditional version. It wasn't bad by any means, but it's quite different from the halo-halo I grew up with and the ones I enjoy whenever I visit Manila. If you're looking for a modern take on the classic dessert, you may appreciate it more than I did. Prices are pretty standard for Los Angeles, and they accept Apple Pay, which is always a plus.

I ended up ordering the Banana Pudding in a small. I was expecting more of the signature Happy Ice, but the dessert was mostly custard. There was custard on both the bottom and top with a relatively small scoop of banana Happy Ice in the middle. Because of that, the banana flavor ended up getting a bit lost and wasn't nearly as prominent as I had hoped. That said, whenever I was able to get a bite of just the banana Happy Ice, I enjoyed it much more. It was refreshing and made me wish there had been more of it. Next time, I'd probably skip the specialty option and order one of the plain Happy Ice flavors instead. Overall, it's still a solid dessert spot in the area, and I'd definitely come back to try one of their classic flavors. If you're deciding between a specialty creation and the original Happy Ice, I'd probably recommend sticking with the classic.
