With today's heat wave in the SFV, it felt like the perfect excuse to finally try the halo-halo from this Filipino bakery/café that's been sitting on my "Want to Go" list for a while. One thing to note: they open late--12:30 PM. Parking was easy, and there's a decent amount of seating inside. I happened to be the first customer of the day. Don't expect the warm, smiley Filipino hospitality right away--just head straight to the counter and place your order on the iPad. As for the halo-halo, it's definitely not your traditional version. It wasn't bad by any means, but it's quite different from the halo-halo I grew up with and the ones I enjoy whenever I visit Manila. If you're looking for a modern take on the classic dessert, you may appreciate it more than I did. *My overall impression is somewhat biased since I really enjoy ube, and outside of that preference I would consider this a fairly average café experience.* Parking: Cafe 86 is in a plaza surrounded by other small businesses and restaurants. It's off Reseda and its parking lot is usually a hot spot among people. There is a good amount of parking but depending on the time, it fills up quickly and can feel tight trying to maneuver your way through and find a spot. Ambiance: Cafe 86 is a, they specialize in coffee and matcha and truly have an expansive menu featuring lots of delicious ube variations. There is a good amount of seating in the cafe, from normal tables to a couch to lounge on. The interior of the cafe is lined with brick and the warm lighting casts a soft cozy feeling. There is ample space to sit and enjoy your drink. I'd even say it's a good spot to study as it is spacious and does not get too loud. Drinks/food: We've tried the Iced Ube Matcha latte, Iced sea salt latte, Iced Ube Latte, as well as the Ube truffles. I love the ube flavor and it pairs perfectly with their matcha. They don't use the highest quality matcha but the ube flavor carries and still provides a nice tasty drink. The iced coffee was good, a little too sweet and kind of just an average latte, nothing to write home about. The ube truffles are something sweet that hit the spot if you have that sweet ube craving. They are soft and chewy and just the perfect bite. I am definitely biased in general because I really like ube so if you aren't the biggest fan you may not like it Overall this place does make their drinks on the sweeter side so going half sweet is smart if you don't want a blast of sugar. Service: Everyone thus far has been extremely friendly and welcoming! Overall: Cafe 86 is a solid spot if you are in the mood and have a craving for sweet, ube forward drinks and sweets. I STILL LOVE THIS PLACE. It's never been busy which really blows my mind because it's so good. But then again I've only been here twice during lunch and it's never busy. If I had went to school here it would have been the perfect study spot! I got to try a bakery item and a few other drinks. To be honest, I would stick with their ube products. The dragon berry calamansi just tasted really sweet. I got to try their ube butter bar and it's exactly as you would imagine! Super creamy and melts in your mouth. It's super sweet, so maybe that's why I didn't really enjoy my drink. The jasmine calamansi paired much better with the butter bar. I feel like it would go well with a hot jasmine tea. Huge selection of treats and drinks! Their ube cakes are fantastic (especially the cream cheese frosting). I love the texture of the ube truffles, but could do without the coating. Who wants UBE?! Get your ube fix here. This place has it all. Ube cheesecake. Ube shakes. Ube ice cream. Ube tres leches (which I have yet to try). They ran out by the time I got there. They even have ube bread pudding! Had the Monster shake, bread pudding, and cheesecake. All of which were just fantastic and OH! How could I forget? The ube pop tart! Flaky, lightly sweetened with that ube drizzle on top. It's the perfect little treat with a cup of coffee, hot or iced. One note on ordering the bread pudding. It comes with the option of the ice cream on the side or on top, warmed or not but it won't let you select more than one option on the kiosk. So if you are taking it to go, just let them know to have the ice cream on the side. I recommend indulging sooner, warm that puppy up and of course, a la mode. The Ube Tres Leches is an ube sponge that is soaked in coconut, evaporated and condensed ube milk and topped with whipped ube halaya and a crunchy layer of cashew meringue. It is nicely dense and tasty with excellent ube flavor balanced by the sweet Tres Leches and nutty cashew . For some reason mine didn't have the coconut flakes, but it's just so good. A real treat to have. The Ube Ice cream is very straightforward and expectedly delicious. It is something that you can easily pair with any of their pastry choices, and I'll be sure to explore more of their menu. Walked in, no customers inside. 4 people were working, no one said hi or smiled. I stood in-front of the counter, expecting someone to come and take my order, but no one came up. Came here on a recommendation from a friend. On this day, it was pretty empty; except for a few students on their laptops. The vibe was calm. Good music. Filipino baked goods offerings are mostly Ube flavored. Extensive drink menu with Filipino flavor profiles as well. Limited baked goods at this time of night. I very rarely come here nowadays because of their super late hours. Very odd for a "cafe" to not open till 12:30pm on a daily. It's wild to me that I have to wait to get coffee so late and it honestly didn't bother me so much until today. We were running errands and decided to grab coffee since we had a late start. We weren't done with errands but since this is a bit out of our way, we drove out to it before wrapping it up. I forgot this place doesn't open until 12:30 and we got there shortly after 12. We walked around a bit to kill time since we were already out here and might as well get boba with my coffee, right? So wrong. The worker finally opened the door right at 12:30, we walked in along with some others who were waiting as well. I ordered an iced cookie butter latte with boba and the guy said they didn't have their boba ready yet. I was like ok, I get it, sometimes it's finishing up or needs an extra 15 minutes. Nope! He needed a whole 'nother HOUR. I was beyond in disbelief. I don't know when they come in to prep but boba definitely does not take that long to cook. Also? Opening at 12:30 on a daily and they weren't even READY? That's pretty sad. I ended up getting my cookie butter latte anyway because we already waited forever and made our way out. Even the customer who ordered after me was sad that he couldn't order boba for his child. Very disappointing and didn't think I'd need to lower my rating for this place.
