I am a hot dog, hot link fanatic. So, my expectations are high. I order a hot link , two Chicago Dogs and two Coney Dogs. I will say this stay out of the Chicago Dog Business and focus on the Coney Dog. The Coney Dog, had me thinking I was in Detroit for real. I love it! I took one but and my eyes did a roll of satisfaction. A plus. The Chicago Dog missed the mark big time. I don't know if the ingredients just were my fresh but something wasn't right. It just didn't give me the Chicago Dog, YES factor. It wasn't juicy either. Just not up to a Chicago Dog standard. So I had been meaning to try this spot. This place used to be a pizza joint called Pappa Mikes. I was driving by and thought I'd grab a simple chocolate shake. I went to go in and the door was locked. All the lights and open signs were on. I called and asked if they were open, the young lady said yes, and I said while I am at your front door and it is locked, she hung up the phone and a few seconds later I saw her come out of the back. Something seemed off but I ignored it and ordered a chocolate shake. Without a word, she started making the shake. She used vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce... If that's not enough, then get a medium or large for a few quarters more. But it truly is a double scoop (even for the smallest size cone) and it's in the name. Dar's Double Scoop is probably one of the best ice cream shops in my opinion. The price, quality, quantity, and the fact it's locally owned. All the things that makes it a wonderful ice cream shop! Lil yang and I went here yesterday to celebrate her birthday. Lil yang got a small sugar cone with cake and ice cream(flavor), and almond joy(flavor). I got a small cake cone with Zanzibar Chocolate. Our total was $5.50. The amount of ice cream we got was a lot! I was so full after my ice cream, I had to consider that my dinner. Probably not the smartest idea, but hey, it was Lil yang's birthday treat. I haven't tried their food there, but I was recently looking at their menu, and I enjoy a good brat or polish sausage. So I know I will have to try them soon and I will let yelp know. Overall I definitely would recommend this place to anyone. Wow this place is a treasured gem. Very very nostalgic. I'm from Detroit and that place is the home of Coney Island restaurants. Dar's offers a Coney Dog and I can say with pure honesty, that it's extremely tasty. I know your saying to yourself . "Dude it's just a hotdog." I appreciate Dar's for incorporating a piece of my hometown in his restaurant. They even have Superman flavored ice cream. Superman is a ice. Team flavor specific to Detroit. The pizza here is incredible. They even slice it into squares for you, which is dangerous because you can't stop eating them. There is a reason I became the Yelp Duke of Dar's. I could eat here everyday if my girlfriend allowed it. This place is for all ages. Take the kids here for a quick snack or grab a pizza for dinner. I've been a fan of Dar's for nearly a decade. A locally-owned business, it has been a joy to get to know the people working there, and stopping in for a pizza dinner, or just getting ice cream to go, they are always friendly and helpful. I really enjoy the pizza here, though I've found the green olives to be a git strong for my taste. The ice cream is always creamy, and there's a large selection of flavors. When they say "double scoop," they mean it -- if you want a tiny cone, ask for a kid's cone, because a single is going to be a double-scoop. You can always get your ice-cream in a cup (even with the cone), or just plain in a cup. They will hand-dip quarts for you to take home. If you order a shake or malt, you have the option of whipped cream and a cookie with that, and can get them to-go as well. Recently, they added Italian Ice, so you can get those smooth, fruit flavors if you want to avoid milk products. Restrooms are next-door in JMT Subs, another fine business. read more

Dar's is a pretty great ice cream joint that's only blocks from my house but somehow I only made here for the first time a few days ago...what's taken me so long?! What's not to love? The prices are low and you get so much for what you pay for...hint: you really only need to order a "small" because a medium and large cone is MONSTEROUS. Their small is like a large, trust me. Anyway, for $2 and some change I got a "small" cake cone of Root Beer ice cream topped with a scoop of Rum Cherry; it was fabulous. hint: they let you mix and match flavors! A dream for the indecisive airheads out there like myself. I believe my boyfriend got the French Silk Pie flavor and was quite fond of it as well. That's it, I love it. Such a wonderful neighborhood, family owned place. The 2 guys behind the counter (one older, one teenager) were so patient and nice to my kids as they went back and forth between flavor after flavor. They gave them samples of each one. When they were told they could have a scoop of two different flavors they went nuts. Portions are big. Price is low. I would say 30 or so different flavors. It may not be homemade like the Grand Old Creamery but it is Brown's ice cream and it was very, very good. Root beer float ice cream? Oh yeah, you got me hooked. The decor is similar to that 50's theme. It could use a little sprucing up. The vents on the ceiling are a bit nasty. There are plenty of booths and tables. This is a little ice cream shop in a sketchy neighborhood (according to friends but what do I know? I love Dar's. They have great ice cream, a 50's old school decor, their staff is uber friendly AND their prices are cheap! For less than $ 2 you can have a huge amount of ice cream and a waffle cone. They let you sample the ice cream. They have had an annual car show in the summer for about the last 3 years. I love this neighborhood hangout. I go there with friends and family. Plus they are right across the street from the Rice Street Library and the Park, two of my favorite places.
