Flavor and texture wise it's a really solid pizza, I would definitely recommend it. It was so filling and cheesy. We also tried the red and white wine. They have outdoor and indoor seating, which is a big plus in the summer. Some of the reasons: why I am not giving it a 5/5. It's because we waited a close to 50 minutes for the pizza. We have driven by here several times and always said that one of these days we will try it. Friday was finally that day. It smells amazing when you first walk in. They make a wonderful butter crust deep dish pizza that is smothered in toppings. We decided to go simple - with pepperoni. The amount of pepperoni they put on this pizza was amazing! Let me back up though, we started with an order of cheesy garlic bread donuts. What could be wrong with that combination? They arrived and were the size of golf balls. So garlicky, so cheesy, so yummy! I will admit, it was a rather long wait for the pizza and I was starting to feel a little hangry but when it arrived, it was worth every minute of the wait. So delicious and filling . One piece was all any of us could eat. Was just as wonderful the second day. The inside of this place is charming. An old Mario video game kept our 7 year old entertained. Probably closer to 3.5 for our first experience here, but giving a benefit of the doubt that if we ordered differently it would have been better! We came in before the dinner rush with nearly nobody in store and ordered at the counter. I was shocked to see the pizza price, but then learned that they are Sicilian pan pizza: they serve 2-4 people and are quite dense and large. Know that going in! We started with the Garlic Cheese Bread Donuts because Yelpers recommended them - those were the star! Super unique and gooey. We would have much preferred marinara dipping sauce with them instead of the white sauce. We got wings to share: dry rub that were good and classic. We ate these two starters as we waited for the pizza: it took a bit longer than we'd expected since the shop was nearly empty. Here's where we went wrong: my husband ordered the 4 cheese pizza, add pepperoni. The amount of ricotta on the top of each slice was...inedible. It was more ricotta than enjoyable, and we ended up scraping off 90% of it. The other elements of the pizza were great, but wouldn't recommend the 4 cheese or any ricotta-heavy pizzas. Ordered the Italiano through DoorDash pickup. For a $15 sandwich it was kind of on the smaller side and also the lettuce I got on my sandwich should've been thrown out. It smelled funky and was mushy and not even really green it was like yellow because it was going bad. There was also barely even meat on it. First impressions were not great. Finally got past the superior Hero sandwiches. The Mortadella sandwich is a killer!! Ordered our favorite pizza, Sausage, mushrooms, and black olives, it's our go to pizza around town. Their crust is a little thick, it is not a thin crust, but I like it. The pizza is a rectangle so every piece has some crust, like that. Great balance of ingredients and flavor. Been to Mario's a few times. Surprised I haven't written a review yet, because it's definitely a gem in Saint Paul. My favorite item on their menu I is the garlic bread/balls. I love cheese and garlic and these are packed with both! I appreciate that you can get slices of pizza and even some of their speciality ones too. The location is easy to find but has minimal parking. They have great Detroit style pizza, thick, cheesy and a little crispy, so good. They are busy in the evenings Friday and Saturday. I went to Mario's with a friend later on a Friday night. There is some parking behind the restaurant and you walk from there. There were a couple outdoor tables and then plenty of indoor seating. The decor in the restaurant is relaxed, which I think is very fitting for a pizza restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant you walk up to a counter to order. We chose to split a pepperoni pizza and got sides of ranch. After receiving our table number we picked where we wanted to sit. It took some time for our pizza to come out but when it did it was glorious! It was large enough for the two of us, and I did not even finish my half. This pizza was so good! After ordering the hot honey pepper pizza, we sat down and took in the wonderful locale. The decor was pleasant and there was plenty of seating. Overall, great place. Now, for the main course...the za.... The za was undeniably some of the best I've ever had. It's about 14x8 which was plenty for my small wife and a larger me. The hot honey pepper pizza was fantastic. The jalapeños, honey, and pepperoni tasted Devine. It's Detroit style pizza so also be prepared for some of the thickest and most delicious crust you've ever had. In conclusion, stop wasting your time on inferior pizza and go to Mario's. This was my second time at Mario's and it hit just as good as my first dinning experience. The gal who took our order was very nice and answered my friends questions as it was their first time at Mario's. The sandwich is a must order! The bread is made fresh daily and it's the best to bite into. The garlic bread donuts are also a must especially if you love garlic. The breading is crunchy and as soon as you bite into it, it's like what have I been missing my entire life. So good! The hot honey pizza was good too. Ingredients compliant each other well. I'd prefer more and more jalapeños because I love spice, but still very tasty. Don't forget to save room for dessert.... You will not regret it. So delicious. The Oreo donuts are also served with a cup of icing. It's like the MN state fair all year around at Mario's with the garlic cheese bread and Oreo donuts. The restaurant is not super big, seating inside and out on the sidewalk are available. You order at the counter and staff greeted us right when we walked in; I felt very welcomed.
