I recently tried Mario's in Saint Paul, and the hype is real. The pizza is so filling and flavorful made with quality ingredients. The garlic donuts are so good. I am speechless. The hero sandwich is good it's not as flavorful, but it is satisfying for what you would be looking for in a sandwich. The Alabama white barbecue wings are on point, they tasted so good with the ranch. And lastly, the Oreo donuts are really really sweet with the vanilla frosting. This spot has so much potential to be a staple in the Twin Cities and I have a feeling it's going to be very successful and last. I know this is a popular spot was college students being it's right here in University of St. Thomas. There isn't a whole lot of parking but there's street parking and there's plenty of city on the inside. I highly recommend the spot if you find yourself in the St. Paul area. read more

I've been wanting to visit for awhile now, and Mario's didn't disappoint. It's got a no-frills vibe, and *delivers* with some of the best sandwiches in the cities. I've got to come back for the pizza, but we got the classic hero with mortadella and the Italian combo. If you enjoy different takes on pizza, give Mario's a try, Our first time here but we did our homework bully visiting their website. We parked in the lot located behind Mario's. Its a little over 1/2 block away which wouldn't have been an issue except it was snowing hard. You order at the counter. You have beverage choices located in a self serve cooler or you could order beer or wine. We ordered a salad along with the Four Cheese pizza The orders are made from scratch and the joint was hoppin' so it took approximately 40 minutes before we were served our pizza. In the meantime we shared a side salad which was spinach with breadcrumbs, Klamatta olives and a delicious dressing. They offer hero sandwiches & Zeppo's donuts which both interested us but we were on our way to a concert so stuck with the pizza. The pizza is Sicilian style with a gorgeous golden crust nicely toasted. The dough is thick yet light and fluffy and the fresh mozzarella, perorino, ricotta and Parmesan topped with Sicilian red sauce puts this pizza over the top. Good serving size as we could only eat two pieces apiece so opted for a to go box. As stated, the place was full and staff also busy with to go orders. They charge you a 10% service charge which we thought was a bit odd but let a tip of 10% as well as we usually tip 30% for food and service this good! Definitely worth the stop read more

This place is so good. So so good. The rectangular pizza is just a delicious dream, I wish I had an extra stomach so I could eat more of it. The sausage is our current favorite. Here's the surprise though: their house salad is shockingly delicious as well! It's full of some delicious crunchies and is perfectly dressed. Mario's is must to visit! The food was fantastic and not like anything I have had before! I came here with a friend and it was somewhat easy to get a table on a Saturday night. Ordered a pizza online using Toast Takeout app and requested to have one topping removed and another on only half of the pizza. Did not realize there is a 10% service fee for changes! Since I used to work for two pizza restaurants in the past, this seems like a crazy practice since I am saving them money on the toppings. Soooo delicious!!! We just tried Mario's for the first time last night. I'm still dreaming of their food today. We got the marinated artichoke hero and a 3 cheese pizza. Everything was cooked perfectly and it was molto delizioso! The atmosphere was inviting and friendly. The music was a little too loud but whatever, I was there for the food. I was so excited that another pizza place that isn't a national chain is coming on this side of the river. Word is they may actually know what a sub is too. I was there around 4 a couple of Saturdays back. It was sit down only for staffing reasons. If you aren't here by 5 you will wait and wait. Word is out about this place. Not just cause they're there but how damn good they are. It reminds me of the Detroit style pizza, but they refer to it as Sicilian. Shaped the same and just as dense. I got the pepperoni cup and just loved it. So it was getting so packed I shared a table with a couple I took pity on. Not the kind of place you want to stand around. Stellar service, especially from Em. Until you get used to it you may feel kind of lost with the menu or whatever. They have bottled Pepsi, which is an attractive feature. A nice remodel. I can't believe it took us this long to get to this neighborhood gem. From the second you walk in you feel like you're at your family's house for dinner. So friendly. So welcoming. Very friendly service and greeting, the music was a little loud. Good for families with seating, a lot of spaces to sit and move around. We sat and waited (as we waited I enjoyed a very cold beer in a can in a cooler fridge), we took our order for takeout, as they said it would be 1/2 hour and came out on time. Hands down, the best pizza I have ever had! Phenomenal crust and a great balance of toppings. The Garlic Cheese Bread Donuts were unique and definitely worth the price. You don't want to be in a rush for the pie to hit the table. Plan on a good 30 minutes or more, depending on how busy they are. Again, definitely worth the wait. I'll start off this review by saying that the style of pizza that is served here (Detroit style, I think) is not my favorite. It is too much breadstick-like crust for me - I prefer a thin crust. That said, the pizza was quite good - and because the crust is so thick, it is very filling. The 12 year old and I love pizza, and we have a night where we had to fend for ourselves for dinner, and gave Mario's a try. You order at the counter and it is pretty straightforward. The inside is nice and comfortable, enough options to sit, but it did not feel like we were all on top of one another. This pizza takes a bit to cook (the crust, I assume) but the one we received was perfectly prepared. We ordered a half cheese (gotta see what their baseline is like) and half supreme, my son's choice. Two things here that knocked off a star. First, their supreme has jalapenos on it. Personally, I think that is great. But it is not a typical topping for a supreme pizza, and you know who are picky eaters? Almost everyone between the ages of 2 and 19. If you have an unusual topping and you see a kid is the one ordering it - mention the jalapenos. He was bummed as the pizza that he wanted was too spicy for him - he had to switch over to the cheese. Next is that you get your own plates, forks, and whatnot yourself. No big deal. But you are serving a pizza with a massive crust. I know what I am about to say is heresy to some, but eating pizza with a fork is my strategy when it is very hot - cut off a piece and you can blow on it and cool it faster, which gets it into your face faster, and saves the burned mouth. They provide super thin paper plates. Combined with the thick crust, the plate is quickly destroyed. I recommend regular (cheap) plates. All in all it was a okay experience, we'll come back to try the heroes. read more

Look, I want to love this place. It's owned by the same people who run Estelle and I've never had a miss there. However, Mario's just isn't up to snuff. I've now ordered 3 pizzas takeout - the classic Pepperoni, the 4 cheese, and the Cacio e Pepe. All three of them have been under done in the middle pieces to the point where I'm eating raw dough. For a pizza that's eight pieces, that's four corner pieces that are edible and 4 inside pieces that are not. On every pizza except the pepperoni, there's just one more flavor that's missing. On the four cheese I added some balsalmic vinegar and olive oil and that helped complete the flavor profile. On the Cacio e Pepe, I've added honey (which is a departure from the traditional Cacio e Pepe, but is pretty tasty). Why did I have to add to the pizza that I bought to complete the flavor profile? At 22 dollars a pizza, this is a little silly to me. The one redeeming factor here is the pizza's pretty good cold. The 4 cheese is tasty if you spread the ricotta over the whole slice. Overall a disappointing experience. I hope they can turn it around. Update: just finished the leftovers; another corner piece was under done to the point of being squishy and wet when biting into it. That's 5 pieces under cooked out of 8 slices. Come on, guys. read more
