The property is a short walk away from main street, Linmar Gardens, Grant Park, Galena History Museum, Grant's House, and pretty much everything that the town of Galena has to offer. It is located next to a highway, but with traffic lights to slow cars down and a lack of major conjestion, any vehicle noise wasn't very noticable. Reason # 2: The owners care about their property. From the rooms, to the buildings, to the hedges and grass, everything is well kept and nice looking. The rooms are clean and comfortable with extra blankets and a fan in the closet if things get hot or cold. Our room, the Hannah room, wasn't the largest available, but the bed was very comfortable and the room was charming enough that we didn't mind the lack of size. A common area was also available to our room and the other guests in our building. We never saw other guests but we were happy to use the kitchen, living room area, and outside patio in peace. The only element I wish they had was access to the internet. This place is as low tech as it gets. Even the owners don't use the world wide web. Their tourist information is all based on brochures and phone calls. It's actually kind of endearing. A more simple time. So, even though my laptop didn't see too much use during our stay I was okay with it and it added some unexpected charm. Reasson # 3: The owners care about their guests. The first thing we did when we arrived was meet one of the owners, Barb. She is a very straight forward, kind of socially awkward, kind woman. She hurridly got our information and went through the motions of checking us in. A phone call interrupted our conversation that Barb had to answer allowing Bill, the other owner, to take over. Bill is awesome. After finishing the check in process he sat us down and then went in detail, using a map of the town, all the ins and outs of Galena. Showed us good places to eat, where the public washrooms are, how to get to one place and the other. Not only was he full of info but he really seemed sincerely happy to help us. They even made some calls for us to secure a dinner reservation, allowed us to use their parking lot after we checked out the next day, and were happy to take picture after picture of us when my wife wanted the perfect one. Both were very nice, helpful, and along with their B&B, they helped make our Galena experience a great one.

Lovely ambiance of jazz always playing seems comforting in so many ways. The hostess ate breakfast with me and helped me with photos, directions, advise. She was sincerely lovely. They went out of their way to help me in my travels. Epic hosts, food, complimentary drinks. I have never been to a place this unique. Usually you worry about small things at hotels bc they are so sterile. Here its like staying at your grandparents house or favorite aunt and uncles. I suggest this location to people who love the wholesome things in life without the upper scale crust lingering on your permanent white pillowcases. You don't need to worry about that here. Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. Even that didn't phase me too much, but when I helped myself to a pillow case that I found in the hall closet it looked like there was a booger on it and I just lost it. We were not given any kind of hassle when we checked out early and it would be my guess that we were not the first. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy. If you don't mind all that I mentioned, by all means stay, but I will not stay again. If you can get past the cat smell and the disgusting pillows and the dirty kitchen, it IS a beautiful B&B. I need to note that it took me a long time to write this review. It really IS beautiful, and the owners really are lovely people, but I just couldn't not say something. Had everyone else that has written reviews been totally honest, I probably would not have stayed there. This place could be SO much better with a little more care.

The bed and bedroom was perfect and relaxing. The bed was comfy, wonderful linens on it, and more pillows than we knew what to do with. There was a pull out murphy bed in the living room that we lounged on, but we slept in the bedroom. Both beds were comfy. We had the luck to get a room on the 3rd floor facing the back of the hotel - which had a fantastic view - see pictures! The room and balcony both faced the back. We had a two sided fire place that faced the bedroom and the living room. Amazing jet tub in the bathroom that was room for two adults. ;) It was clean, comfortable, quiet, the staff were absolutely wonderful and helpful. The next time we go to Galena, we will absolutely stay here again! I can not recommend enough!

When I first saw the listing with the excellent reviews and history of the house I felt this would be a fun place to stay. After spending the four nights my initial feeling was right on. This was the perfect place for our family to stay. Kathy greeted us when we arrived and helped us figure out where to have dinner that first night. We stayed in rooms 10 and 11. Those rooms have their own private bath and are on the second floor. It was as though we had a family apartment. The adults room had a king sized bed and the children shared a queen. Their room had a scavenger hunt within the stone walls, which they really enjoyed. After dinner the boys played table tennis and pop shots basketball. Kathy also treated them to an ice cream cone. Very sweet. There were also plenty of board games to play in the evenings. Breakfast was yummy and coffee aplenty! They do offer WiFi, but no screens, so it is easy to bond with your family and have some quality time together. This location was within walking distance to the swimming pool/park and Pendarvis (which is still closed). It is about a half an hour drive to House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, and Taliesin. Lots of fun side stops on the way to any of these places. Kathy is an awesome cook. We feel so fortunate to have met her, Dan, and Bobby Jo on our trip. Mineral Point is a beautiful town and I thank them for preserving and sharing such a wonderful Wisconsin landmark with us.

We overlooked the Mississippi from our stay in Betsy's Room in the White House, and from the robes to the clawfoot tub, there was an ideal combination of charm and cleanliness. Marie had called us in the early afternoon to confirm details of our arrival, and everything was straightforward and hassle-free. Our 9:00 family-style breakfast in the morning was just wonderful! (I know I sound like I'm glowing, but it's only because we were just constantly pleased!) The fruit, French toast, and sausage were all fresh (and plentiful), and the freshly whipped cream was a happy asset for both toast and coffee. So excited to come back and again enjoy both the amazing architecture and hospitality!

The cottage was once a summer kitchen, and sits a stone's throw from the main house. Both buildings are of the same stonework style that Mineral Point is famous for. The cottage sports two bedrooms, a family room, and a small bath. The plumbing is all modern, with great water temp and pressure, as well as central air conditioning. There is a microwave, a small fridge, and a coffee machine. Several interesting books and knick-knacks line the shelves, and the main bedroom has a cute little shelf of chocolates. Out back is a little garden and beyond that is the Cabin at Cothren. Both have exclusive parking with direct access to the road. The reservation process was great. We booked online, then the owner (who is very pleasant and sociable) contacted us to arrange payment. She processed our credit card through Paypal. A very easy transaction. Our only comment is that we would have liked to have had a little history of this particular property in a printed form, but I'm certain our hostess would have been more than happy to tell us if we had asked. (I later discovered that there is some historical info on their website.) It should be noted that the whole town rolls up their sidewalks pretty early, so plan ahead if you want to eat out locally. Also, note that although Yelp lists this as a bed and breakfast, it is not.
