We had been…read morewanting to journey to Mineral Point for years, as we had an amazing dinner at Kohler featuring Hook's cheeses, made in Mineral Point. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming, but the room we stayed in, #3, was in need of some serious upkeep. Within the first five minutes, I had killed 10 spiders or other bugs hanging on or near the windows. There were also three large cobwebs in the corners of the room. I am not really one with nature, so finding so many bugs in a room was a huge turn-off. The room was also quite cold, and we were told that the thermostat upstairs controlled the heat to all of the rooms, so any guest could turn it up or down. We turned it up with the hope that the party of four staying in the other two rooms would leave it alone - they did. The furnishings were sparse and worn. Of course, the linens were washed and pressed, but the comforter and pillow shams were well past their sell-by date. I'm not a fan of pillow shams in hotels anyway, as they always seem a bit dinghy - I'd just rather have regular pillow cases, wouldn't you? I'm afraid to say the carpet was also quite old. The bathroom in room #3, however, was very large, and included a dresser for clothes (if you were staying awhile, which we were, thankfully, not). We mistakenly believed that the The Coach House was a bed and breakfast, but that myth was quickly cleared up. The lodge, as I suppose you would otherwise call it, did offer complimentary tea and coffee, however, which we drank in a freezing common room. The common room did have a fireplace, but the staff were long gone and there was no indication of whether guests were allowed to use it. There aren't many options for lodging in Mineral Point, so this may well be the best in town. However, when I'm paying $99 a night for a room, I expect something a bit more on par with a Marriott Courtyard or a Hampton Inn (in terms of upkeep, decor, etc.). It seemed to me that the lodgings in Mineral Point were taking advantage of the fact that the nearest major hotel was an hour away.

Things we especially liked about the house were the delicious bed linens, the wide range of books in the house (many from local authors!), and the overall cozy cabin feeling. Cozy, in this case, is not code for "cramped" -- in fact, it was spacious with lots of light streaming in through the ground floor windows. Coleman was a wonderful host and his years of experience in the hospitality industry are evident in his attention to detail throughout the property. Onhand was a good stash of guides to nearby attractions with emphasis on birding and cycling, regional-focused magazines, and even some homemade jam. We visited in winter and spent our time skiing and snowshoeing around the property, returning to the Inn for a fire and a glass of wine. We will definitely visit again.

We have a group of us that have stayed here several times. This year we had to cancel our…read morereservations on August 1 for our October 20-22 weekend. 2 days later we were all charged a $50.00 cancellation fee for a total of $200.00. Just wanted everyone to note their cancellation policy. We had given over 70 days notice that we were unable to make our trip this year, but it doesn't matter the $50.00 is their set cancellation fee. I would also mention that the air quality in the log cabins is awful!! We opened our windows, bought air fresheners and nothing got rid of the musty moldy smell that permeated the cabin and irritated our sinuses and lungs. This was not a one time experience, we noticed the smell on at least 2 of our stays among several cabins. It was so bad that the last reservation (cancelled one), we had all booked their other cabins, not the log cabins. I have told our group to count me out if they decide to go back, just left a bad vibe with me.

This was the vacation spot I was most looking forward to and the one I was most disappointed by. The best parts? 1- Mt. Horeb is an amazingly wonderful small town we will be sure to return to. 2- The radiant heat throughout - no cold floors. 3- An iPod with 6,000 songs hooked up to a nice stereo system. Our beef? At $110/night, we strongly feel the Gonstead Guest Cottage is overpriced. We resented the 2-night minimum stay once we got there, and hated learning that we would be charged $10 to use their wood (we got a cord of wood from the gas station down the street for $5). We thought the price would guarantee us a nice stay. We were sadly mistaken and will not stay here again. Yes, clean (if you overlook the cobwebs) but you can't escape the strong smell of smoke from the fireplace. No problem, right? We'll just air it out. Sadly, that's not possible as the owners removed the hand cranks from the windows. Yes, they have bikes for you to use, but no air in the tires (even after promising to remedy this). Yes, they have a full kitchen with nice cookware but if they are charging so much it needs renovation. We'd also been told there would be cereal avaialble for us but nothing was there. We did love the town and will be back to visit it. We'll just seek alternate accommodations next time :) As a frequent B&B customer, I know my money should go further than it did here and am sorely disappointed in my stay.

Cowboy Joe is one of the owners and you can tell how much time, love and care goes into maintaining the property. The cabin's are warm, cozy, clean and stocked with everything you could need. They even present you with homemade chocolate chip cookies upon arrival that were incredible! I do recommend bringing all of your food necessary for your stay because the cabin's are extremely secluded. Any businesses are about 20-30 min away and even then, what IS there is extremely limited. My husband and I were prepared for this, so it didn't detract from our stay whatsoever-I say that as an fyi for future guests. The porch with rocking chairs was our heaven so we could read and listen to the sounds of nature. We highly recommend staying here! You won't regret it!

The Old Jail and FIrehouse Guest Suite is a a one-room suite complete with kitchen, dining area,…read morequeen bed, day bed/trundle and small fold-out bed. There is a quiet courtyard as well. When we arrived in McGregor, we were immediately greeted by Richard and Charlene who made sure we parked in a safe location. Richard helped with our bags. As we entered the suite, our senses are bombarded with an Americana motif taken to the nth degree. Almost every square inch is decorated by images and pictures of the old jail and firehouse. The Palucci's will fill you in on the history of the jail and some interesting stories. in addition, there are old trickets and toys representing firemen and the jail theme. Charlene's father was a fireman in Chicago and she has a tribute of him displayed in the kitchen area. Just about every square inch of this room is covered with something. Even the ceiling is wallpapered. If you have sensitivity to sensory overload then this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you appreciate the time and care that went into trying to make this one-room reflect the history of the town, then you will really appreciate the decor and ambiance. Although not officially a Bed and Breakfast, the Palucci's have generously stocked the fridge with pastries and cinnamon rolls, milk, juice, jellies, etc. The pantry has coffee, teas, and snacks. Richard and Charlene have gone out of their way to make sure you can make your way through all the switches and amenities that the place has to offer. In fact, they have written directions for EVERYTHING in the room. There are directions for which light switch is for which area of the room, how to turn the key to open the door, how long to keep the A/C running. You'll either find it endearing or eccentric. Another consideration is the location to Main Street. The room itself if just feet from Main Street and the Mississippi River is only about 4 blocks. But, with the big picture window open, all passerby's can see in. Not a big deal since you can close the blinds for privacy (there's even a note on how to do that). Overall, we really enjoyed our visit at the Old Jail and Firehouse Guest Suite. We found it clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the friendliness and care from RIchard and Charlene. We would definitely stay there again!

I understand the house is old, but faucets shouldn't leak, and the mattress should not have a big divot. Upon arrival, Julie made somewhat of an effort to interact and showed us to our room. The showerheads and Italian lotion and hand soap are nice. The quality of workmanship on repairs left something to be desired. The dining room and stained glass were very well preserved. The constant pressure to donate, tip, and buy things was distasteful. The breakfast was was okay, but definitely would not define as homemade or gourmet: especially the brown and serve sausage. The French press coffee was nice, until the level got low, and the press and coffee looked greasy: like there was greasy water or dish soap in it. Food and coffee were luke warm the 1st day. A little better after. Fruit was fresh. Saturday night they had a loud fundraiser. I wish they would have done it on a day or time they were closed to the public: but not the end of the world. Doorbell could be heard regularly: including late at night. Walked out of our room to someone listening at our door. Very creepy. We felt like we were intrudingnand heard constant complaints about having to make breakfast. We generally stay in 3 star places, but was the Walmart of our experiences.
