My husband and I have a vacation tradition: ice cream after dinner almost every night. So…read morenaturally, while staying in Torrey, we found ourselves at The Creamery twice during our three-night stay, and honestly, we were very happy we did. What we loved most was the variety of flavors. They had some really creative options that felt different from the usual ice cream shop lineup. The first night I ordered a flight of five flavors, and the second visit I came back for a flight of three because there were certain flavors I could not stop thinking about afterward. The standout favorites for me were definitely the berries and rosemary and the juniper berry. Both were unique, fresh, and surprisingly balanced. The rosemary added this subtle herbal note that somehow worked beautifully, and the juniper berry flavor was just fun and different in the best way. I also tried butter pecan, lemon coffee seed, chocolate, and later the smoky coffee flavor. The chocolate was especially good because it was creamy without being overwhelmingly sweet or overly intense, which we actually appreciated a lot. Sometimes chocolate ice cream tastes like someone melted an entire candy store into a bucket, but this one stayed smooth and balanced. My husband had butter pecan the first night and Strawberries & Vanilla the second time and really enjoyed it too. The atmosphere of the place is another big part of the charm. Warm, welcoming, nicely decorated, and very lively in the evenings. The owner was there during our visits, and everyone was incredibly kind and helpful. They even encouraged us to sit outside and enjoy the evening, which added to the whole relaxed small-town vacation feeling. Overall, this place became one of our favorite evening stops in Torrey. Creative flavors, great quality ice cream, kind people, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you slow down and enjoy being on vacation.

A true hidden gem in Boulder, Utah!…read more Sweetwater Kitchen is one of those places that makes the journey part of the experience. Tucked away off Hell's Backbone Road, the setting is absolutely beautiful, and the combination of the rustic atmosphere, incredible views, thoughtful food and great cocktails makes this a place I would definitely return to. We had the Rainbow Trout Filet, which was pan-seared and served with celery root purée, celery, almond green beans, baby tendrils, sundried tomato, remoulade and lemon vinaigrette. It was beautifully prepared, fresh and full of flavor. The BBQ Rib Eye Pork Chop was incredible--so tender it practically melted in your mouth. It was pan-roasted with sage and a homemade BBQ glaze, accompanied by summer corn, pepper drops, caramelized onion and an apple chutney. The combination of sweet and savory flavors was fantastic. We also tried the corn chowder, which featured late-season corn, bacon and micro cilantro. It was a delicious way to start the meal, and the cocktails were definitely worth mentioning. The Mountain Spring cocktail was refreshing and perfectly suited to the beautiful mountain setting. The Sugar House Rum Prickly Pear cocktail was another favorite--such a fun, flavorful drink and a great complement to dinner. What really stood out was how much this restaurant feels like an experience rather than simply a place to eat. Sweetwater Kitchen embraces the area around it, with seasonal ingredients, locally sourced food and a relaxed ranch atmosphere. The restaurant describes its philosophy as seasonal cooking with ingredients at their peak, including ingredients grown or raised right on the ranch. (Sweetwater Kitchen) If you're exploring Boulder, Escalante, Capitol Reef or Scenic Byway 12, put Sweetwater Kitchen on your list. It's worth getting off the main road for! Beautiful setting. Excellent food. Creative cocktails. A memorable Utah dining experience.

We stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Motel for a night while exploring Capitol Reef in one of the…read moreretro-Queen rooms above the store. This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.
