California rolls

The ambiance was good! The place was really nice and really clean ! I was looking for other sushi places and it lead me here... I didn't know that the old ramen place was gone and was replaced by this sushi restaurant for now 9 months! The service was good and we liked the ambiance it wasn't too loud or anything! It has 4 tables and more outside. It was cold so we ate inside but outside is really nice too! I wish they had more in the menu such as Ramens and Bento boxes. They mainly serve sushi and sashimi but their selection of sushi is very limited to tempura's and imitation crab though the sushi rolls were very fresh they were mostly smothered with sweet sauce. We got the miso soup which was really good!!! The vegetable tempura was also delicious along with the shrimp tempura! Then we had the California rolls, caterpillar rolls and the Omg (Shrimp tempura) rolls which was good as well!

Came here with my family at 5pm on a Tuesday. The indoor area is very small, only about 16 seats. Unfortunately, it was extremely hot inside, easily around 85 degrees. I'm not sure if the air conditioning was broken or if there isn't any, but it made the environment uncomfortable for both guests and staff. While we did enjoy most of the food, the temperature was concerning, especially for a sushi restaurant. The salmon came out warm, which didn't feel safe to eat, so we left it. Overall, the food had potential, but the lack of proper temperature control really impacted our experience.

There is definitely some dark magic going on here because this was the best roll I've ever had in south OC (and for a place with countless amazing sushi spots that is a high compliment). This place is usually packed but even though I came in around 6pm I was dining solo so got seated quickly. I recommend getting here a little before dinner service starts at 5 because it is a small parking lot. I got the delicious sesame dressing house salad to start which was pretty big for one person so it'd be great to share with another person or two. The star of my dinner was the Nine One One roll - a delectable spicy tuna roll with smelt egg, avocado, and green onion. There was soooo much complexity and depth of flavor in this roll it seriously blew me away. Service was so friendly and still attentive even though I was sat outside in a corner! I will be back again soon with friends and family!! What a great spot for a date night

Great little spot with friendly chefs. Fresh clean tasting fish every time we've been. The food is good and the atmosphere friendly. Great date spot! If you're looking, just do it. You'll not be disappointed.

This place is cute for an average neighborhood sushi restaurant. I probably wouldn't come here unless I was in San Clemente and not overly impressed with the presentation. I don't like sauce or mayo so maybe it's great would have enjoyed it more with all the pizzazz. They are heavy handed with the rice in all the rolls but generous with fish portions and not exorbitantly priced. Summary... The portion sizes are pretty substantial and the fish is fresh, but I thought it was bland probably because I didn't have any sauce on it. They do have gluten-free tamari upon request.

We've eaten at many sushi places around then world and this whole in the wall is one of our favorites. Amazing melt in your mouth sushi with unique flavors. Friendly staff with a local vibe. Sit at the bar and ask Levi for an Omakase meal. You won't regret it!

Came here for a birthday dinner on a tuesday night and was expecting to walk right in, but to our surprise they were super busy! No problem as they had a waitlist and you can even check in via yelp within 2 miles. We have a tesla so just sat in the car while we waited. We had 7 people ahead of us and waited maybe 30 minutes. It was a bit of a wait but that's not their fault they're busy Ambiance - it is in old town san clemente so the vibes are so cute. i generally don't like that parking lot to begin with but not their fault. they had maybe 4 tables inside, a few bar seats and maybe 5 tables outside. It seemed like it was a mix of locals/regulars and people coming for the first time. Service - personally our waitress was amazing she was so sweet and friendly. I don't think they were ready for it to be as busy as it was on a random tuesday night so service was a BIT slow overall Food - very fresh, large portions of fish AND they make it easy by having "set" platters to order. We got the 6 set which was a combination of 6 hand rolls and the dark magic sashimi platter which was 18 pieces. 48 for 18 pieces of sashimi 35 for 6 hand rolls 3 for a bowl of spicy miso soup (excellent) drinks - huge bottles of beer, i ordered the soju sunrise $16 and it was delicious although i couldn't tell if it was strong or not also ordered a glass of PLUM wine which was a bit on the sweet side but good paired with the fish Overall I would recommend this place. The slow service is explainable and I am a sensible person. I feel that patron's these days have gotten too spoiled. It is also nice they don't take reservations and don't focus too much on take out because according to the waitress, the goal is top tier service for seated patrons. They delivered thanks guys! enjoyed my birthday dinner

Both the Diane roll and halibut sashimi were excellent!

Our sushi and sashimi was delicious. The service was excellent and the restaurant has a great vibe.

Recommended by a friend and it didn't disappoint! Fun vibe. Indoor or outdoor seating. Short wait, but that just means the sushi is worth coming for. Definitely coming back.

So stoked to have Dark Magic and Chef Levi in SC - hands down the best sushi in OC - he and his team kill it!

High quality sushi, definitely a hole in the wall gem. Trying new sushi spots is something I don't usually do since I stick with my favorites, but after so much talk about Dark Magic, we were pleased to confirm that they had a friendly vibe, great staff and experienced chefs. Beautiful presentation and fresh cuts of fish that melt in your mouth. We went for lunch and it wasn't too busy, and they seem to have a crowd of regulars which is always a good sign.

Service, sushi, and atmosphere was so on point!!!! Grateful this gem has been added to San Clemente's repertoire of restaurants! It's cozy and not over the top with pricing, yet feels like a lovely intimate date night spot.

We arrived at 8:20 PM on a Friday, and the staff from Dark Magic Sushi told us that they were doing last calls and could not give us service even though they close at 9:00 PM. I then kindly asked a lady who works there if we could do a to-go order, and she also refused to take the order. To be honest, this has never happened to me, especially since they had 40 minutes until closing time. I have worked in restaurants, and the #1 rule has always been our clients, and in the restaurant industry, this is unthinkable, especially with the amount of time they had until closing. I hope this gets to the right person in restaurant management. Locals recommended the place to me and my friends, and we were excited to try it, but unfortunately, we had this experience.

The lot was about half full at 5pm on a Sunday. The dining room is small. There are five or six tables, and some seating at the sushi bar. It does have a nice feel with the round interior, high ceiling, and many windows with a nice view outside. There was some light background music playing. It wasn't busy this early, but it started to get busier after 5:30pm. We started out with the four piece jalapeno poppers ($10). These were very good. The jalapenos were crisp, stuffed with cream cheese, with two sauces drizzled on top. I think there was also a little spicy tuna on top. Next, we ordered a California roll ($8) and a spicy tuna roll ($9). These were good standard rolls with fresh ingredients, and reasonably priced, especially for the area. They have a menu of chef's special rolls which sounded good, and we decided to try the Pink Lady (Inside: Shrimp, Crab, Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Outside: Salmon, Jalapeno, Lemon, Soy Paper, Mustard Ponzu, $20). It might seem a little expensive, but it a roll with no rice. It was excellent, and well worth the money. If you love citrus like I do, you have to try it. I have never had pink lemon before. It's still tart but sweeter than a yellow lemon and less sweet than a Meyer lemon. Our server was friendly, and our food arrived promptly. We would return again when in the area. The only downside is that the restaurant is small. If the dining room is full, you may have to wait a while to be seated.

Stop by next door to get my nails done for a wedding and decided I had some time to kill before my next meeting so I stop by. Keep in mind this was after the lunch rush so plenty of seating and no wait time i got in around 2;53pm and was pretty happy to be seated right away. I was hungry and I missed eating here, prices were still affordable and delicious. My meal came out to be less than $25 and yes, that is with tip. I ordered an appetizer of Shrimp and Vegetable tempura, coke and a shrimp & veggies tempura udon. Perfect combo on a gloomy day, and honestly, I need to head here more often. I did past by the other day right before 6pm and there were people waiting outside for a table so it's a great spot. I'm telling you guys, its the go to place in SC. Their sushi is pretty darn fresh too, if you don't want to drive all the way to Irvine or L.A.

It does feel a little cramped inside but they do their best to accommodate as many diners as they can. The two servers were running around and being efficient and attentive as possible which I recognized and appreciated. Looking at the menu, they have a variety of sushi rolls and other non-fish options such as udon and teriyaki plates. Also, I felt like I was transported to pre-2010 days with the prices. Never seen a menu with prices under $15 for everything and $3.50 for a handroll? It's no wonder why this place is poppin. To be honest, while the fish quality is not stellar, it still tastes good and flavors are satisfying. Plus considering the price, you can't expect to have 5 star cuts. I would recommend the tataki special roll (spicy tuna with seared cajun tuna on top) and the baked salmon roll (CA roll with baked salmon eel sauce on top), these two were my favs. I would recommend!

Shattered. but it's my birthday, spirits are still high We begin our journey: two blocks. Two. Blocks. My date is what I can only describe as a sentient boulder x redwood. A geological formation with feelings. This man covers one meter per stride while I am speed-walking like a determined squirrel in formalwear (or festive hamster?). And because I have to tilt my entire skull upward to communicate with him, I cannot see the ground. The ground, meanwhile, is throwing me curveballs. At one point, instead of warning me I'm about to trip on concrete, he just yanks me sideways with an "ahh!" Like I'm a decorative balloon at a child's birthday party about to blow away. I survive. But I make a mental note: must teach tall man how to steer small people. We are not luggage. We arrive. For sushi in America? Honestly? Pretty good. Suspiciously good. Like when you expect sad fish and even sadder rice, and instead receive something that respects the ocean. We ordered karaage as an appetizer (solid, respectable enough to make my ancestors nod, though it did come out in the middle of our meal, I could not be mad), a sashimi plate (Not fighting for its life), a San Clemente roll--because.. represent(?)--and a no-rice OJSN (ojisan, middle aged man) sushi roll. Also, a "white mushroom roll." I am seated in the corner like a tiny, judgmental raccoon with a giant bottle of Sapporo all to myself. It's my birthday. I deserve structural support. especially after the concrete declaring war? please. The no-rice sushi? Best I've had in the U.S. Except they used rice paper. Rice paper. Which is technically not, not, rice. But I'll allow it. Innovation is chaotic but smart. Now. The White Mushroom Roll--there were *no* mushrooms. let me repeat **NO** mushrooms Our server, Ary--Greek name, Mexican excellence, monk-level patience--explains that the roll is topped with a mayo cap before baking so it looks like a mushroom. I am a proud mushroom enthusiast. A fungal loyalist. I felt betrayed. But then... I tasted it... Why did it taste like clam chowder? Decadent. Creamy. Slightly illegal clam chowder. In sushi form. What coastal witchcraft is this? I was confused. I was impressed. I was emotionally unstable. At some point while chatting with Ary (probably lobbying for actual mushrooms), I casually mention it's my birthday. At the end of the meal... He returns with an ice cream platter and looks me dead in the eyes: "お誕生日おめでとう." (HBD) In Japanese. No warning. No drumroll. Just Ary, you icon. and a candle. So there I am. Five feet tall. In the corner. Singing "Happy Birthday" to myself because Tall Redwood Man is too shy?? Sir?? It is my birthday. You are 87 feet tall and afraid of melody? It's fine. It's ok. He did sing "Happy Birthday" ten times that day. (Nine times too many. but appreciated everytime, nonetheless) Overall review: Fish: surprisingly legit Mushroom: nonexistent Clam chowder sorcery: unsettling but delicious Sapporo: emotional support received Tall date: needs steering lessons Would I order the mushroom roll again, knowing it contains zero mushrooms? ...Unfortunately, yes.
