This ice cream shop has been around since 1964! That qualifies it as a town gem in my opinion and a local favorite. They have so many great ice cream combinations, milkshakes, sundaes, ice cream cones as well as coney dogs, bbq sandwiches, steak sandwiches, soups, etc. The snicker sundae is my personal favorite. They have a drive - thru as well as a nice walk up ordering windows. All the staff were wearing masks. It's not far from the Crawfordsville town square and courthouse. read more

I came all the way to Crawfordsville, Indiana 45 min away for this smurf ice cream. My friend said it was better than kings island smurf ice cream. Since covid shut down that opportunity I figured I had to. Couldn't find a single photo of said ice cream so I figured it was a must to come. Nothing makes me happier driving through Crawfordsville than seeing the Dari-Licious sign lit up. Like a beacon, it draws me in every time. Opening in the middle of the polar vortex, I can remember times in the past where there has been snow on the ground, and I've been bundled up in the car munching on my ice cream. Today was one of those days. As much and Levi and Lacey wanted to run and play on the jungle gym at Turtle Park, and as much as they begged and pleaded, we stayed in the car where it was warm eating our sundae's and slurping our shakes. Okay.. so maybe they were just as cold as the rest of us and didn't even bat at eye at Turtle Park.. or maybe it's because you could barely see it over the mound of snow that had been plowed from the parking lot. Either way, we were there for the sweet frozen treats and not the playground (this time.) This year marks the 50th anniversary of Dari-Licious being open. To thank their customers, DL will be offering various 50% off specials throughout the year. That's what the sign said anyway, although it didn't elaborate on what the current special is. Maybe they're just trying to start some buzz about it.. I grew up with this place. When I was in preschool (I think I was 3) I remember walking down in a single-file line with Sister Mary Clarence (okay, I can't remember her name.. but she was a nun..) leading us for orange sherbet ice cream. I also remember Grandma and Grandpa loading us up in the mini-van and taking us for ice cream some evenings here. It's one of my favorite childhood memories. Ironically, now *I* load Grandma up in the car and take her for ice cream. A lot has changed, but the Dari-Licious remains the same. I saw the great reviews, so I was really looking forward to grabbing something cold on a hot day. When I pulled in, I was impressed that there was a park (10 and under) just for the customers of Dari-Licious. Even better, there wasn't any line as the person ahead of me got his order and departed. So when I got my medium sized chocolate dipped cone, I was hoping my luck would continue. But unfortunately, I got a shrimpy little amount of soft serve with a splotchy chocolate dip. And the dip didn't even freeze! I had been looking forward to the that crunch as you bite through the frozen chocolate dip....but there wasn't any crunch. The flavor was fine and the ice cream didn't melt all over, but compared to a lot of places I've been, the sizes were really small. Maybe they think only kids eat here? Look, anyone who complains about the prices of the cones hasn't been to too many places (I paid nearly $4 in Pendleton a week ago for a medium cone.) On our way back from Turkey Run, my friend and I needed to find an ice cream joint to pacify the restless kids who needed a blood sugar boost. Dari-licious was on our route back, so we stopped to check out the creative menu of sweet treats. The menu is incredibly varied, so everyone should find something to make them happy. We definitely agreed with previous reviews about portion sizes being a little skimpy for the price. However, I think everyone walked away happy from their Dari experience. I ordered a marshmallow shake, which was a little underwhelming. It was closer to just a plain vanilla shake; there wasn't much of a marshmallow flavor detected, but I'd prefer that as opposed to sickenly-sweet any day. My friend got a chocolate peanut butter sundae, which she loved, and the 4 kids got a variety of cones, sundaes, and shakes. Definitely check out Dari-licious if you're in the area! read more

A drive-through or walk-up dairy bar with a menu that will put you in despair over making a choice, especially if you are out if town and do not know when you are coming back next. I gave this place a chance, and actually visited on one of my very first days in Crawfordsville. But after discovering Big Dipper and enduring a full year of raving about Dari-Licious, I did the only thing a responsible Yelper could do: I rounded up a few pals (including Ross M. and Jacob P.) and embarked on a taste test. We did it totally scientifically. We came up with a list of fairly standard food items that could be found at both (burger, Coney, fries, milkshake). We sent a search party out to each place at the same time, so that the food would be equally hot. We met in a neutral location. And we sampled away! The result: We were unanimous that each item was better at Big Dipper than at Dari-Licious. Dari-Licious was apparently surviving on reputation and low standards, and maybe by the fact that it's on a busier road. But we all agreed that the winning item in each category was the one from Big Dipper. Take a minute to reflect on this. It's not like one of us thought one thing and another thought something else. It's not like DL won in even a single category. And it's not like it was even close. So if you want a burger, fries, a Coney or a milkshake, take a dip down to Big Dipper. I've been there only a few times. So far the food it good and not to costly considering the type of restaurant it is. It's a little more expensive than most of the larger chain fast food restaurants around here, but the portions are generous. It has some different things on the menu you don't find at most restaurants. I love their sloppy Joe and Texas Hot Dog and their Bumble Bee milkshake. The ice cream is amazing. There is so much to choose from; banana splits to milk shakes, sundaes etc. The staff has been super friendly so far. I don't think it has inside dining. It's more of an eat in your car or take-home place, but from what I can see it seems clean. I remember last year I went on their opening day of the season and all the shakes were half off. It was so packed, I had to park about a block away and walk over and then waited in line for about a half an hour. I think this is your best bet in the 'ville for ice cream. I grew up here, and every time I'm home, this is the place I go back to. It's not fancy. The girls still wear those white pants you can see through. But the ice cream is standard soft serve, which I can rarely find on the East Coast (it's always custard out here). My favorite is a chocolate ice cream soda (ice cream mixed with a bit of chocolate syrup, then mixed with soda water, and then topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream). It's a treat that I'm way too young to even know about, but since I worked in an ice cream shop growing up, it's something I tried once and loved. They are known for their speedy service, and back in the 90s, the fact that you had to include your photo in your application. No ugly girls at the D-L, I guess. :) Oh, and you can swing at the Turtle Park until you drop your ice cream cone down your front and get ticked off about it. read more

The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars as opposed to 5 is that, you'd think after over 50 years of being in business they could at least ask to those going through the drive-thru, "Would you like a lid for your sundae?" They should never assume that one is going to eat their sundae in the parking lot or at Turtle Park. Anyway, one of the only good things about Crawfordsville. Blue-Collar soft-serve. Jr. High hot spot. A Crawfordsville staple since 1963 that hasn't been remodeled once. The only place in town that still puts a cherry on top. I recommend a bananna split on the bottom. D-L also offers a perennial favorite of local soft-servers, a milkshake with extra flavoring and/or soda mixed in, called a "Mooshie." They are now open year-round. Charming Turtle Park, across the parking, lot provides a nice place for kids to play and old folks to sit and watch them. The old Pellet Mill and squatty houses across the street don't add luster to the atmosphere, but making use of the drive through will get you in and out. Stopped here for lunch and ice cream with a bunch of us (14 in all). First things first: the customer service here was phenomenal. The manager actually came to the register when he saw our big crew, and the entire staff stopped what other tasks they were working on to pump out our orders. I was more than impressed. Second, the food was straight up coney-licious. Every possible hot dog combination you can dream up. I stuck with the traditional chili dog and loved it. Then, the ice cream! Wowsa!!! I still really love the shakes here. They are thick and creamy and come in tons of different flavors. I have never experienced rude service here, they do tend to hire attractive teenage girls but they have never been anything but nice to me. And they are open full time in the winter now! "The 'Lish" is the spot in C'Ville to get a great ice cream of your choice. I used to get the female turtle, which often confused the girls taking my order. All it is is a turtle ice cream without the nuts. After awhile, they seemed to catch on (I am fat, so I was here often). I always loved everything they had (even their chili was good). This place is a C'Ville staple and was often the best study break I got at Wabash. The staff is all local girls that make it easy to order in a hurry. Good place for frozen treats. Actually, one of the few in Crawfordsville that have a variety of eats to choose from. They dont just sell ice cream but have a decent selection of American style cuisine to choose from if you are more hungry than you are looking for something sweet. The BBQ pork sandwiches are pretty good. As far as the ice cream goes, its all pretty mediocre. Nothing too special but they have decent prices. Visited this evening and we hadn't been here for several years. Seemed the same as I remember. They have your basic ice cream, shakes and parfaits. They were fairly busy tonight which seems to be the norm as I recall. I got the Oreo shake with hot fudge, it was average tasting. We also got a kids cone for the little one which was just the right size. The cookie dough mooshie didn't come with much cookie dough. It's nice they have a park right there for the kids and to sit and eat your dessert. Overall not too bad for Crawfordsville. The prices are high for what you get. Best of C'ville status. I always looked forward to the first Dari-Licious trip of the season as a kid for a Smurf cone, and did as an adult coming back to C'ville when I lived away.
