I've cheated and gone to The depot to save money or home decor group in Swpt because it's closer, but never again. Recently I've redone three baths. First one I went to home decor group with a picture on my phone. Owner told me he can't match something on my phone and left me to find a similar swatch. Next two projects I went back to waters and brown. Heidi helped me match pictures and made spot on recommendations. I brought in samples and images and she gave great choices to match or coordinate. Then over to the counter for the actual paint. John couldn't be nicer and more helpful (plus he actually remembers me by name and project). Some projects easier than others. More complicated (expensive) projects he gave me questions to ask my contractor and alternatives. I so appreciate the service here. It's second to none and the quality can't be beat. They've earned my loyalty and I'll return the favor by encouraging anyone to go here first and last. This is how a customer centric business is run.

It is often a busy store--they cater mainly to the busy trade in the Melrose area--so be patient, but if you know what you're looking for, they're great and well organized. My 3-year-old and I stood waiting quietly for nearly 15 minutes for our turn to be helped. While we waited, my son calmly counted the rolls of painter's tape stacked on a shelf, not running around, just counting and stacking. Completely harmless. Out of nowhere, the employee began verbally berating me for letting my toddler make a mess and "be annoying." I was stunned. There was no chaos. There was no disruption. Just a bored little kid counting tape while we waited for service that never came. The tone was hostile, condescending, and completely unprovoked. If this is how they treat parents with well-behaved children, I can't imagine how they treat anyone else. If you want quality paint and a business that treats customers like human beings, go to the Benjamin Moore in Malden or Ace in Stoneham instead. They're friendly, helpful, and professional -- everything this location is not. This store has lost my business permanently. And we've spent thousands as we've renovated our home over the years. But judging by today, they never seemed interested in earning it in the first place.

One thing that people may not realize is the difference between a lumber yard and a hardware store…read more Moynihan is very much a lumber yard with an attached hardware store. The vast majority of their business is to contractors. Their wood products are very high quality. They have a wide selection of specialty wood products that just aren't available at Home Depot, and if they are, they're better at Moynihan. I'm impressed with the selection of hardware they cram into their small store as well. Just keep in mind, they're not set up to help someone who doesn't have at least some knowledge of building trades. If you go in knowing what you need, they'll be very helpful. If you go looking for someone to walk you through a project you've got sketched out on the back of an envelope and you don't know what materials you want to use or what tools you'll need, this isn't the place to go. Again, bottom line, high quality product and a helpful staff for people who know what they need.

As others have observed, they sometimes are completely uninterested in you, are very inefficient in starting with a new customer upon finishing with a previous one, but also have a good sense of using color and can provide really good advice if they get engaged in talking to you. On the right side of the store, they're really setup for people who basically know what they want. They provide excellent, well informed advice on technical questions, like "what do you recommend for priming PVC boards before painting?", or "how many gallons should I buy for 700 sq ft of interior wall after windows and doors are subtracted out." But they are not going to help you pick out a colors or take too much time explaining the difference between latex and oil paint. They have high quality products at a fair (not cheap) price. So I give the left side a 3, the right side a 5, for an average of 4 stars.
