This place. This place is weird. Very very weird. In the parking lot you see a sign "best smoothies voted by houston press". No year. No specific flavor just the sign. You walk in and it's just so odd. There is a l shaped bar where they make smoothies then another bar in the back where they have some supplements. But okay, it's just one brand of supplements, and some weird branded protein I've never seen. And a dry erase board that is acting as it's menu. I walked in and was greeted by two ladies. I wanted to keep it simple since I am not a scholar in deciphering texts. Vanilla, large, with protein and some supplements. 7.75. But they started with this brown solution as the base for the smoothie. Dumped in a scoop of protein. And that was it. Really was an uneventful smoothie. At least at smoothie king you can see what they're putting in. Oh and to digress a little, after I walked in someone came behind me and the girl who was helping me just stopped making my smoothie and started talking to her. Was just odd. Part 2 of the 'I Drink Your Milkshake' series. Set in a comfortably upscale Braeswood Place strip center, Dan's has a banner proclaiming that they have the "Best Smoothies" per the Houston Press voters. I've been stalking this place for a while since the reviews have been raving about said milkshakes. And, yes, the drinks are more milkshake than smoothie. They use ice cream, a bit of water, milk, and optional ice and supplements if you want to lower the caloric count or boost the nutrition, respectively. The shop is not big at all: a small counter with about 5 stools are to the left where they make your milkshake and, to the right, is the small inventory of nutritional supplements. A man I presume to be Dan was engaged in a deep discussion with a policeman about working out and nutrition. I was there for the milkshake. A young lady offered me an easy smile as I placed my order. A small 12-ounce item is $3.50 (includes tax) before any supplements. A large 16-ounce is $4.50. Cash only unless your purchase is more than $4.50, according to the sign. Scanning the whiteboard, I waffled between chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch as today's option. I asked the gal which flavor was preferable - and she offered a shrug and said they were all good. So much for salesmanship. As noted in other reviews, you could have the overrun if you don't have a lid put on your cup. But, I wasn't offered a choice in the matter. While the gal could offer no suggestion on flavors, she was very committed to putting a lid on my shake. I'm not too upset by this: given my expanding waistline, it was probably better not to have more. She did offer me a cheerful blurb about their "buy 10, get one free" smoothie card and handed me one with the first stamp without any prompting. Within 5 minutes, I was back in my car trying out the chocolate shake. It wasn't mind-blowing in the least. Good but not phenomenal. So, I don't know what kind of Kool-Aid those Press voters were drinking before having one of these shakes but I guess I should go find where they are serving the Kool-Aid and drink liberally. Will I be back? Maybe. But, I'd sooner go back to a strawberry shake at Chik-fil-a since they are richer and cheaper. read more

I think people who are complaining are probably getting vanilla or chocolate. Those are both more boring basic flavors. The smooth may taste okay, lots of chunks of ice. But they can't tell you what's in the base smoothie. Of course you have the add ins. They only say it's a skim milk based. They can't tell you calories, carbs, protein, and other ingredients of the base shake. read more

With all the new gluten free, grass fed, industrial looking establishments out there now, you've got to respect the local spots that have remained true to what they have provided since the beginning. My wife and I have gone here since we were kids at st. marks episcopal across the street over 16 years ago and they continue to dish out the same great tasting smoothies in foam cups. After hearing rave reviews from a friend of mine about the smoothies here, we decided to truck on over for one. You wouldn't think a place named "Dan's Vitamin House" would probably have smoothies, but believe it or not, the Houston Press rated them Best Smoothie at some point in their history (not sure exactly the year). When we went in, it was "rush hour" - the kids from Pershing (the middle school next door) had just gotten out of school. The three girls behind the counter were running around blending things as fast as they could, but they literally only had 3 regular-sized Oster blenders to do the job. So, through no fault of the hard-working girls, service was super slow. Smoothies cost $3.50 for a 12 oz and $4.50 for 20 oz. You can get boosts if you want, and you can also choose to make it low cal by requesting half ice. There are about 8 flavors, and you can choose a combination of any of them. I had pineapple, cranberry, and strawberry. Yeah, weird I know, but that's how I roll. The smoothie really didn't taste like any of those ingredients, but my friend's strawberry banana smoothie had some major banana aftertaste (Did I mention I hate bananas? Ew.). They also ask you if you want a lid or not - if you choose the lid, you get less smoothie. If you don't, they give you extra by heaping it up past the top of the cup rim. The smoothies are good, but I'm not sure why the heck they would be the best in Houston. Robek's beats the pants off Dan's, hands down! I've been going to Dan's Vitamin House since I was about 12 years old. (I'm 26 now). Every time I'm in Houston, I make it a point to go for lunch on Saturdays. Mom and I used to (and still do when I'm in town) route our Saturday activities around Dan's for lunch. The best choice by far is the Strawberry Banana Make-A-Meal Large. Perfect meal!! These are smoothies like you've never experienced!! The "smoothies" could be considered the offspring of a smoothie and a shake. (I believe the "ice cream" is actually similar to a malt, which cuts some of the calories down and give the smoothies their taste.) MMMMM. Mouth is watering just thinking about them. The other great thing is that Dan is almost always there, which to me shows how dedicated he is to his business and the people he works for.....the customer. I wish that we could open a Dan's Vitamin House in Austin, but the reality of it is that Dan's wouldn't be Dan's without Dan and the single location. read more

Smoothies are good but they are just milkshakes. The girls behind the counter were awful! They literally add Hershey's syrup but not vitamins or proteins nor do they make suggestions or help you to pick out anything. Absolutely the best tasting "smoothie" anywhere. Don't think of it as low cal though it is really a very good shake. Getting their "low cal" means that they add ice to it before blending. Taste is still excellent, but the ice chunks tend to block the straw. They always make more than will fit in the cup and if you order it with a top the extra gets thrown away. Better to order without a top. They will give you the extra. You can eat/drink enough of it there to get a top on before you go. read more

My friends and I walk in one afternoon wanting a refreshing drink, and we are greeted by a pathetic hello and not a friendly smile. Let me start by saying these aren't smoothies, they're basically milkshakes (ice cream + flavoring), and they're amazing. These really ARE the best "smoothies" in Houston. My personal favorite is the strawberry banana, but the oreo is a close second. There are several other options, and you can get plenty of flax and wheatgrass and other vitamin supplements that i've never heard of, if you're into that kind of thing. The smoothies are so thick that the employees have to repeatedly shake the blender and switch back and forth on different blender motor bases. Despite the thickness, the smoothies melt just enough so that you don't faint from trying to suck it up through a straw. Definitely don't get a lid, they'll heap the excess up over the top of the cup by about 2-3 inches. It's $3.50 for a small and definitely worth a taste. read more

The store has never changed which is nice considering everything moves so fast these days and it seems people can't appreciate things unless they are brand new and modern. The shakes are awesome and you can add vitamins to them! Jamba Juice and Smoothie King fill their smoothies with added sugars and juice concentrates while Dan's does not! Dan is also crazy knowledgeable about everything he sells and doesn't try to talk you into anything you don't want like the teenagers at GNC do. I have enjoyed the flavor of the Preferred Nutrition shakes made by this place however be warned...they are NOT lactose free as it states on the shake menu. Only the powder is lactose free. When mixed with their DAIRY ice cream product, it is no longer lactose free. There is no nutritional information on the ice cream product used. Therefore, calories, carbs, etc. in the "Preferred Nutrition" shake made in the store is unknown. read more

I have a dear friend who went to the hospital in Houston and they really screwed up. We went to Dan's and he suggested some supplements to allay the physical set backs that the hospital said was out of their control as they had no evidence based policy to deal with their mistakes. Dan is not a doctor and does not sell drugs. He offers supplements which may aid in the healing.
