I have coarse thick hair and the circumference of my ponytail at the nape of my neck is about 3.75 inches. I have gotten my hair cut by Danny before pre-pandemic and was happy with the results of his $20 cuts at that time. I got tired of cutting my own hair, so I decided to get my hair cut by him again in August this year. The hair consultation was brief - when I requested a straight bob, he suggested a-line. I repeated that I wanted a straight bob. He asked if I flat iron my hair - I told him no. He looked surprised and repeated my answer in the form of a question "you don't use a flat iron?" I confirmed this. After I got my straight bob cut that I requested, the circumference of my ponytail became less than 1 inch, the top layer of my hair was longest, the ends of my hair underneath were uneven with the middle layers being the shortest (Danny explained that this due to the concave of my head, which is untrue because I know from cutting my own hair that with proper layering that the ends should be blended and gradually appear shorter at the top layer. Danny also explained that the reason for his hair cutting technique was to help my hair lay flat more easily when being flat ironed...even though he was made aware beforehand that I do not use a flat iron). -He first cut my hair to my desired bob length using his professional hair shears. -Then he cut through the bottom layer of my hair with a razor using 3 quick angled strokes. -Then he proceeded to cut my hair layer by layer ONLY using the toothed scissors at all kinds of angles repeatedly (I was unsure if this was his usual technique, as I felt that he did not do that when he cut my hair years ago...if I remembered correctly). 3 stars because Danny is very courteous, he shampooed before and styled my hair after the now $60 haircut, he was nice enough to have me come back the next day and trim my ends to make them less uneven without paying extra, and he advised me that I should have asked for a blunt bob if I did not want him to use the toothed scissors. The haircut alone is 1 star - he cut my hair based on the assumption that I style my hair a certain way despite being made aware beforehand that I do not, my ends broke off constantly for about a week straight due to the damage from being mostly cut with toothed scissors, the layers underneath the top layer remain uneven and my hair looks worse when I tie it back in a ponytail. So I continue to leave my hair down with its hollowed out appearance underneath where the back of my neck can be seen through my hair. 3 months after the haircut, my ponytail circumference is now about 2 inches. So I am likely going to have to wait at least another 3 months for majority of the unevenness to have grown out so I can get the ends cut evenly. read more

My sister's wedding was this past weekend and Danny was the master artist behind our up-do's, including the bride! My sister was referred to Danny through a friend and I am so glad she decided to go with him. First off, Danny was very kind to accomodate us on his day off (Sunday)! Right away as we arrived, he got to work on the bride's hair and took extra care to make sure it was perfect and matched the test run they did a few weeks earlier. There were 4 of us and we all came with a picture of how we wanted our hair. Danny did an amazing job checking in with each of us along the way to make sure he got our hair right. He also was very efficient with his timing to ensure we would make it to the venue on time for our makeup appointments. We all asked for soft-up-do's that framed our faces and he delivered with care and made sure we had the volume we wanted along with any face framing pieces of hair to accentuate our face shapes. He also added flowers to our hair which were the perfect accent without being too much. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. Years of going to salons where I left less than thrilled more often than I care to admit, I finally got exactly what I have been wanting for what feels like my entire life! Danny and his assistant were incredibly sweet, welcoming and made sure I was comfortable throughout the appointment. I got a perm, which, can be pretty hard to sit through because of how long it takes, how tightly the rods are rolled, it's stinky, etc but they were so efficient and it was a pain free experience; the whole thing was just great! This is Review for 2015, the last time I went in for a trim and V-shape while keeping my length. You HAVE to schedule your appt with him since it's only him that cuts hair. When I schedule, it was one week ahead. But now, it looks like 2-3 weeks ahead. My own main reason of going to him is to get the V-Shape Haircut or the common Asian girl haircut that he does very well. He's my favorite for that kind of hair cut and I haven't gotten any other kinds of cut besides the deep V-shape. Been going to him since 2009 but recently went to another salon for a texture cut, but if I want that v-shape again, I'd go to him 100%! It's funny how he still remembers me from way back then when I had shoulder-length hair which was cut by him! because my hair was very long up to my bottom, he charged me $45 but I give extra tip to him and his assistant cause he gives me what I want and his assistant for throughly washing my hair and complementing how long it is. read more

You know that stereotype that gay hairdressers are better? Well, Danny does nothing to break it. He's sooo FABULOUS! Friendly, warm, funny, honest, cute...all that you'd ever want in your gay best-friend! I saw him work his magic when he used to work at Jade. People would line up for him and make advance appointments. He was exclusive and Jade's best kept secret! But now since he has his own shop, I can finally get my hands on him! My bestie and I came in wanting trims or cuts and 5 minutes before sitting down in the chairs we looked at each other and said, "LET'S GET BANGS!". Hey now, that's a risky move but we had a feeling Danny would take care of us. She got straight across "china bangs" and came out even more babelicious than before. I got side swept bangs and really love it (posted pictures). I was thinking of getting hi lights but we were the last customers so I knew he didn't have time. When I got my hair hi lights else where else she looked at my cut and exclaimed "he did a wonderful job with your cut!". Usually places will rush things when they are near closing but Danny had none of that. Finding a good hair stylist is like finding a perfect pair of black boots! You look and look and look, scouring racks of shoes. Take off your shoes, try on a pair, walk around the store, listen to how the heel sounds against the floor, see if the boots go with your outfit, make sure they don't bunch up at the ankles, make sure they don't cut the circulation off of your calves: endless "perfect boots" criteria. Here are my suggestions to getting a good cut in a few easy steps: 1. Call DHS to schedule your appointment. He runs on appointments only. I found it hard to find any same-week appointments so had to schedule my cut a couple weeks in advance. 2. Check out Pinterest or Google and search for key terms that match the type of cut you are looking for, such as, "long bob," "asymmetrical hair cut," or "curly short hair." Start a folder to hold all your photos or just screen shot the pix and save on your phone. There are also websites that help you select the right haircut for your face shape--oval, round, heart-shaped, etc. 3. Before your appointment, get some cash. The studio is a cash only establishment. (Don't forget to tip the stylist [and maybe his assistant if you feel inclined].) 4. Parking: DHS is located on the corner of International & 6th Avenue. You should find decent street parking in the vicinity. Watch out for street cleaning and time limits. 5. The studio: You will be greeted by Danny or his assistant who may offer to take your coat. There are lollipops on the counter if you need some carbs. 6. "Rinse, Cut, Shampoo/Condition, then Style": Danny's hair-cutting method is uniquely different from what I've experienced before. First, they rinse your hair in the sink sans shampoo, then Danny cuts your hair. After the cut, he or his assistant will shampoo and condition your hair. Then, your hair is blow-dried and flat ironed. Lastly, Danny makes any finishing touches to your cut! Voila, your new 'do! I paid $35 for the cut + tip for Danny and his assistant. 7. I forgot how soothing a haircut was and the good feeling after one. When I was younger I used to HATE getting haircuts because my hair was really difficult to deal with but now it's soothing and kind of stress relieving being able to just have my hair done by someone I actually trust with scissors haha. First time here. Made an appointment two weeks in advance. Parking was crazy on a Tuesday as there was no street parking during a certain time. I called the salon to let them know I'm here and that there is no parking. I circled for about 15 minutes. The salon was able to accommodate me in their tiny parking lot. Thank goodness. When I arrived, Danny wasn't there. The assistant said I was supposed to call to confirm. He went to the Asian market down the street, lol. Funny. No one told me to confirm when I made the appointment two weeks ago. The appointment was already set up. And I must say, it was a fobby customer service, hehehe. All good. In a way, it felt like a true Asian salon. Anyhoo, she tried calling Danny while she washed my hair. She even gave me the phone to call Danny, LOL! I was getting worried that Danny might not make it back in time but he did. After the long wash, I told Danny what I wanted. Lots of layers with a V shape and Zooey bangs. Danny was very articulate and took his time with my layers. The V shape was definitely on point. Loved it. But the bangs, it wasn't what I wanted. My bangs ended up with a straight texture rather than a curved texture on the side. I even showed him a picture but he didn't really seem to care about the picture. It might be a pride thing where he felt his is better than the picture. Overall, Danny was very nice and gentle. The $35 price was excellent. I have long, thick hair so the price was a plus for me. My layers were lovely and the bangs could've been better. I'm used to it now. I would probably be back for regular cuts only. No bangs next time. read more

I heard a lot of good stuff about this hair salon and how Danny cuts hair to match his client's face structure, so I decided to give it a go since I needed to trim my bangs and have more layers in my hair. My appointment was at 2pm and I came to the salon at 1:40pm. I was greeted nicely by Danny and another older lady. Couple of minutes later I was asked to sit down in a chair to shampoo my hair. In my head, I was like YES. I love getting my hair scrub and head massaged. She wrap a towel over my head and starts to shampoo and condition my hair. I was disappointed because it did not feel good at all and it lasted like a couple of minutes. Water got in my shirt and wet like a fourth of my shirt and I felt like she was in a rush to shampoo me. Boo, no tip for her!! Next I was placed in another chair for Danny to cut my hair. He was working on another young girl and I was just reading a magazine while I waiting for him. Soon as he was done, he ask me what I wanted to do with my hair and I said, "I want to keep the volume and length of my hair and some layers and a bang trim." While cutting my hair, a woman walked in and Danny greeted her and they started to chit chat. I felt like he was paying more attention to her than me and he was in a rush to cut my hair. Then I noticed three inches of my hair on the ground, I reach for my hair and I was like what the fuck? He was almost done with my hair and I was so ready to get off my chair and choke him. My bangs turned out good and he curled my hair. The curls were alright but it did not match my face at all! And he had the nerve to lie to my face and said I look sexy. I paid for my haircut and left. As soon as I left, I saw Danny walked to his car and drove off. So all along he was in a rush to cut my hair so he can leave. If you have to go somewhere at 2:30pm, don't schedule your client an appointment at 2pm. Overall, I would not go to this place again. I went to Danny the first time with a picture in hand of what I wanted. He even left it a little longer for me since I'm a chicken when it comes to cutting my hair short. I was very pleased as he was able to get the haircut to look exactly like it was in the picture! This past, second, time I went I didn't have a picture along. I was so pleased from the first time I went (his talent and all the discussion we had about my face structure and if the haircut would or would not look good) I was sure that just explaining what I wanted in words would be okay. I was wrong! Unfortunately, it seemed he was more interested in talking to a friend that had just walked in the shop, than of listening to what I wanted done to my hair. I was a bit unhappy with that at this point because not only did it feel like I wasn't important enough to listen to as a customer receiving services there, but he started on my late! It didn't bother me too much as when his attention returned mostly to me it seemed he had gotten the point. We started talking about some layering - me mentioning that a little in the front would be ok. He convinced me to do some layering in the back as well and, going from experience of what "layering" means in the past from someone who has my hair length (which means starting from the middle or even bottom), I said ok I trust you. Hey, why not? He knew my conditions. Well, I was so wrong. I ended up getting some sort of emo cut, which he first talked up and specifically said EMO when finishing up the last bit, and later denied when I started crying. At this point he sees it's serious and tells yet his OTHER friend who he was speaking to who had shown up in the shop that "maybe it's better to speak later." By the time he was finishing up I started to realize that this frump of hair wouldn't actually ever start looking better. I had to tell him to stop cutting the last few strands of hair because I couldn't stand it anymore. This is when I start to lash into tears. TEARS! I have never before been so unhappy with how I looked after leaving a salon. I made 3 things clear: I want to keep my length, I want to grow my hair long, and I want to fix my bangs because I don't like them. He did keep the length, but now 75% of my hair was composed of super short, boy like hair, which didn't make the rest of the hair that "kept the length" look like very much at all. And the bangs!!! My bangs went from bearably and fixably cute, to this super super short slanted crap that now I have to keep down and to the side with hairspray all the time. My face is oval, and he elongated it with this huge frump on my head so now I look like a horse! It's terrible. The worst part is he started to argue with me about what I wanted. "You said this..." "You said that..." ....Really? If he had actually listened to me or at least tried to make SURE he understood me which are the basics of proper communication necessary for this field/industry, he would have very quickly found out that I did NOT want ANY of my hair to come even half as short as it did - and that I HATE emo cuts. No offense to anyone, but it's SOOO not my style. I cried for a good hour or two before I was able to fix it. Now I wear *TONS* of hair spray on my head every day to try to make my hair appear normal again. I wanted my hair to look hot for a play I was performing in this past Saturday, but I didn't think to search for and make an appointment with a hair stylist until Friday evening. Seeing all the rave reviews of Danny, I thought why not give it a try. Alas, Danny was to be booked on Saturday morning -- but he said another stylist would be available. I reluctantly agreed, too lazy to search further. Danny was very involved in determining what I wanted specifically, and in directing and occasionally assisting with the project (a slight trim, and styling my extremely curly hair into loose curls, with side bangs). The woman who undertook the project was extremely thorough, giving me a nice wash and scalp massage before meticulously trimming my hair, and then painstakingly blow-drying it straight with a round brush before re-curling it into nice loose curls with the iron. Almost two hours later, my hair looking fabulous, I was curious to know the damage, and happily prepared to dish out $60, $70, or whatever it may have been -- when Danny quoted me $22. I was so afraid that it was going to turn out a mess since he is rushing it. BUT as he continued, it started to look really good. He is amazing with layers, and very creative. I've known Danny literally since I was a baby... My uncle owned the business next to the original Jade Salon, that was located next to Pho King, where his sister would do my mom's hair while he did mine. Danny gave me my first hair cut when I was a baby, I am now 22. My hair grows rapidly fast, so its a little time consuming and costly if I were to get it cut as much as it grows. So I go to him once, maybe twice , a year when I do my hair donations. He asks me what I want, even though I've almost always just let him have his way with my hair, as long as he keeps it low maintenance because I don't like to have to wake up every morning to do a bunch of crap to my hair, but he still talks to me to see if I would be ok with what he has in mind... and I have never been disappointed even on times when I do have an exact look that I'm going for. After we decide how my hair is going to be done, he bundles up and cuts off the length that I plan to donate, and then his assistant shampoos me and gets an area ready for Danny to work his magic. I've had my hair done in short, medium, and long layers... I've had a bob, bangs, my hair permed straight... and when I started to miss my wavy locks, I've had him perm my hair back to wavy to match the wavy roots that were growing out. He always makes sure to frame my face perfectly... he will straighten or curl my hair to my liking at the end. He makes good conversation with you if he isn't completely swamped, during the summer time when its really hot out, he offered if I wanted a dessert drink from Cam Huong because he was going to send his assistant to go get themselves some. I'll admit, I have strayed from Danny a few times out of curiosity, and each time, not only have I been very disappointed, he always knew. He knows his work, and he always knew when I let somebody else butcher my hair. I admire how Danny can remember so many of his clients by name and past memories when he has such a HUGE clientele, but he remembers me from when I was a baby, and even reminds me each time I go in, that I promised him that I was going to have him do my hair and make up when I get married. Tips to any new comers... -Make an appointment, and be understanding that this is a very talented guy, who handles the hair of A LOT of men and women. I know people who have moved out of the Bay Area, going as far as SoCal+, who still come back to Danny. So don't expect him to do miracles if you are impatient and, well, pretty much a bitch from the jump. - if you want or don't want something, be specific & let him know from the start and make sure you both have an understanding of whats going to be done. - If your hair is naturally just unmanageable and difficult, he's gonna do his best and you will come out looking pretty amazing... but you have to remember if you are only willing to pay $30 for his regular wash&cut, its not fair to him if you are expecting him to do all the crap you do to your hair to make it look some what decent. if you spend 2 hours blow drying, flat ironing, teasing, curling and putting a shit load of products in your hair to make it look "OK" you shouldn't be giving him bad reviews just because he doesn't do all the crap you do. You leave there looking amazing and your hair ends up looking SO much healthier. -if you are a walk-in, you have to understand if he happens to be a little more friendly to his regulars. His regulars have been loyal to him for years, they make appoints weeks in advance, they usually do more than just wash&cut, and they bring him more customers. If you want him to pay more attention to you, speak up, he might just think you aren't the chit chatting type. Talk to him so he can get the chance to get to know you and remember you as well. -if you regularly go for the $8-$15 hair cuts at all those cheap places who try to rush you in&out in less than 30 minutes, you might think that $30 for a hair cut is expensive... but I've seen people pay well into the hundreds at other "fancy" places. But I still haven't seen anyone do amazing work like Danny for his price. Besides, if you only want to spend $8-$15, do you really have the right to place judgement? Thats like going into a diamond store with a $100 budget & complaining that the diamond is too small or not clear/sparkly enough. BE REALISTIC, PEOPLE!! I love Danny for the quality of his work & still offering amazing prices. He isn't stuck up like all the other hairstylists that started developing a clientele that still can't even compare to Danny's. He's still as humble as he have always been and even more fun to talk to then ever. I hope all you yelpers out there find the your perfect hairstylist, like I have, and STICK TO THAT HAIRSTYLIST. Don't bounce from one to another, because then you wouldn't be able to build a relationship with him/her. Stick to one hairstylist who knows what you want and understands your style preference. Danny oh Danny, how I love you so! I've been getting my my haircuts from Danny for the past couple of years, and also brought along some of my family and friends to him (who are now regulars). I'm ALWAYS satisfied with every one of his haircuts, and if the fountain of youth was around, I would throw Danny in there! So recently my bestie and I went in for a new change. I wanted some bangs, NOT china bang, but some long wispy bangs that covers my whole forehead. With all trust, I allowed Danny to work his magic. I was so amazed about the cut, that I didn't even feel nervous or uncomfortable about my new do' change. Danny is so good, that I recommend you call ahead a couple of weeks for an appointment. Since, he's so demanding, it's hard for him to cater walk-ins. This is the best place to get a full service haircut (wash/blow dry/cut/style/straightened) for about $30. What more can you ask for? what an amazing hair stylist!!! I ve just done my hair this evening, the last person and I'm so so pleased with my hair style, it 's really beyond my expectation. Actually, I showed him 2 styles I liked on the magazine and asked for his advice, then he made a really wonderful haircut that perfectly fitted my hair. This is the 4th time I have had a haircut in the U.S during a 1 year period I have been here. And I even like my hairstyle which was made by Danny better than the one I had with Arty hair salon in Japanese town or Jade hair salon next door to his place. One word: Danny. The God of hair! That's right, note the capital G. He's been my go-to guy for the past five years. Even though I live in Berkeley, I will drag myself out to Oakland just to get my hair done. The first time I ever came here to get a haircut, I literally told him, "Do whatever you want." He worked his magic fingers and gave me the most bangin' haircut ever. I'm always looking for a signature haircut that nobody else has, and he definitely delivers. Hair dye, highlights, striped sideburns, you name it - my hair has been through it all with him. I don't know too much about hair, so when he gives me his opinion, I take it. I trust him with my hair 100% to the point where I'll let him do whatever he wants when I'm looking for a new, unique hairstyle. I always give him a vague idea of what I want, but he goes the extra mile and gives me something twice as great. I have my doubts in mind when the haircut seems to be going in the wrong direction, but I always end up loving the final product. I don't trust anybody else with my hair but him. From his hair products to the smell of his breath (seriously, it smells amazing), I'm never disappointed with his work. He knows his way with scissors. It's a bit more expensive than other hair salons, but you're not paying for a typical haircut. You're paying for a haircut that has a mind of it's own and looks sexy in slow motion. Seriously, he can make sex hair look drop dead gorgeous. You'll walk out with a fresh, clean cut looking fine as ever. Quick tips: (1) He's appointment only! Book at least a week ahead of time because he's always booked. (2) I highly recommend buying the hair products he uses. They work wonders. My hair holds its shape all day because of the hair glue (which has this citrus smell I love) he uses. (3) Try to get an appointment early in the day. His magic is best when it's rejuvenated! After reading his rave reviews on Yelp, a few days ago, I decided to give Danny a try. Most of what I had read on Yelp was true. He's a great guy (with a great personality), very skilled with the scissors and tends to rush with his haircuts simply because he is so busy with a lot of clientele. As a customer, you are treated very well with shampooing, haircut, blow drying + styling for the price of $35 or so. He also had a lot of regulars drop by and he knew them all by name! My sister and I were the only newbies of the day. I came on a stormy Saturday afternoon when the Mexico vs. Paraguay soccer game was backing up 880 traffic, making me late for my appointment. Freaking out thinking he'd have millions of customers who'd just love to take my place, I called in to say I'd be late but Danny picked up and said it was fine. When I arrived, it wasn't all that crowded, with only one other customer there. As I got my hair shampooed (which felt pretty good!), more customers started trickling in. I brought my little sister, and we both got subsequent haircuts. We both were tired of our usual hairstyles (shoulder-length trim, layers and side bangs) and wanted to change it up. Hearing that Danny molded haircuts to suit your face, we wanted to ask for his opinion. A sort of "what do you think?" kind of moment. Upon asking, though, he didn't really offer any advice, he just kept asking what we wanted. So I just said to give me the usual with a kind of twist, something more edgy lol. Needless to say, I didn't know how to describe what I wanted. My sister was the same. After about an hour and a half to two hours (when he wasn't cutting my hair, his staff was blowdrying, hairspraying and styling it), my sister and I walked out with cute haircuts but it wasn't what we imagined. Still, it wasn't bad and we let it marinate for a few days. However, we've been getting compliments left and right, and though it wasn't what I pictured, it's still a great haircut that actually does suit your face! So maybe Danny's genius is in his execution rather than his advice. My advice would be to expect something different than what you're picturing if you're going to trust him to do whatever, but know that you'll still be getting a great haircut in the end. While I'm usually a $13 haircut kind of girl (Hey, I'm a starving college student okay?), I'd pay $35 for Danny to cut my hair again. Even if it's just once, everyone should give Danny a try! P.S. He has gossip mags for you to read and will always converse with you to make sure you aren't bored while waiting. Great guy! read more
