It was my great fortune to choose Dr. Daniel Slaughter as my sleep apnea doctor when my former doctor retired. Dr. Slaughter has a double board certification in both Otolaryngology and Sleep Medicine, and has over 30 years of experience. He trains other ENT doctors to use his balloon technique. If you have to have deviated septum or sinus surgery, or need help with sleep apnea, I highly recommend this physician for your treatment. He helped develop a minimally invasive technique called balloon sinuplasty. I have heard many horror stories regarding recovery from people who experienced deviated septum surgery in other ENT doctor's offices. I experienced nothing but positivity yesterday. When I arrived for surgery, from the front desk staff who greeted me and checked me in, to every single person I encountered, I felt at peace. The nurses are exceptional, especially Karen, who checked on me in the recovery room, and the nurse who stayed with me after surgery (I don't remember her name). When Karen had me prepped for surgery and walked me into the surgery room, I saw the doctor, the anesthesiologist, and at least 3 nurses, standing in a simi circle around the chair, all smiling at me, as if they were the welcoming committee! It gave me such a feeling of peace, and I knew they were going to take good care of me. Every single encounter was first class and professional. My recovery so far has been excellent, with very little bleeding, no stints in my nostrils, and only mild discomfort. I think if you have minor issues that can be fixed with balloon sinuplasty, then Dr. Slaughter is great at it but if you need individualized care, then you might get disappointed like I was. A hard experience for me was that his office recommended the use of Steroid compounded nasal sprays for 5 months and I am still going through the consequences of doing long term steroids. At the nd I was still having sinus infections so they said I should see a different doctor, and they told me to stop using the Steroid sprays. I followed their instructions and I had severe withdrawal symptoms. I contacted them via patience portal, and explained my symptoms. They said that these sprays "should not" cause withdrawal symptoms and I should go to my GP. So again basically "just go see another doctor" when things got hard. That was disappointing. I am glad to say that I went to a different ENT and had a different procedure done for my sinuses and that took care of my on going sinus infection. read more

I flew from out of state to see Dr. Slaughter after seeing many specialists in my own state. He knew in an instant what was going on in my nose/sinuses while multiple "top docs" in my state couldn't figure it out. Dr. Slaughter said I didn't need any surgery (which was a happy surprise, one of the top docs said I did) so I didn't get the impression that they were price gouging in any shape or form (as suggested by another reviewer). In fact, the amazing benefit was Dr. Slaughter takes my insurance, so although I came from out of state, this was all in-network for me, keeping my costs way down. Wish I would have read the reviews ahead of making a very expensive first appointment. Before anything I was prescribed a 20 day regimen of antibiotics, no symptoms whatsoever to warrant 20(!) days worth other than to just rule out chronic infections. CT scan showed "severely deviated" septum however, let's go for antibiotics first. I did not take the antibiotics and sought treatment for the structural issue. TL;DR - Do not go to Dr. Slaughter. Go see the doctors at CSMA (Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates) instead. They are much more thorough and helpful. Before going to see Dr. Slaughter, I highly recommend you see the doctors at CSMA (Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates) first! CSMA doesn't just measure your oxygen levels in their sleep study like Dr. Slaughter and Sleepsomatics (sleep clinic) does. They also measure the pressures within the airway which makes a huge difference when determining your prognosis. Especially if you have the same symptoms as I do which are: Severe daytime sleepiness, needing to take multiple naps during the day, never waking up refreshed, no snoring, no tossing and turning or fully waking up throughout the night. Also especially if you've tried mouth taping, a night guard, and a CPAP machine and they haven't improved your sleep. I hate writing negative reviews, but I've been contemplating about writing this one for a good while and I feel I need to post it. First the good: The staff was nice. Dr. Slaughter was friendly and seemed to know what he was talking about. And now the bad: Dr. Slaughter talked to me very briefly. I would say I only saw him for a few minutes. Once they received my results, it felt like that was that and they didn't really offer any guidance. It was like, "Here ya go, results are inconclusive. You might have this or this. Go see a psychologist. Bye" After the first visit, I was sent home with an at-home sleep study kit. I did it that night and returned it the next day. About 1 week later, I received a call and was told the results were inconclusive and that I'd need a sleep study at a clinic. The place they suggested had horrible reviews on Yelp so I decided to go to SleepSomatics instead which was very nice, but later I found out they didn't do the kind of sleep study I should have had. I did that sleep study and 1 week later I was told that it was inconclusive as well because my sleep study didn't show any decrease in oxygen levels while I slept. It did show that I woke up at least 10 times (called micro-arousals) just enough for my brain and body to adjust to whatever was going on, but not enough to fully wake me up. They mentioned that I might have UAR (Upper airway resistance syndrome). They only suggested I go see a psychologist who could teach me how to sleep. Now, I'm not opposed to psychologists at all, but this answer felt wrong and inadequate when compared to my symptoms. Especially since I had already tried all the nighttime rituals and things the doctors say to do to improve sleep - No screens, no late snacking, taking a warm bath, meditation, etc. I tried everything! I was desperate for a good nights rest. I chose not to go see the psychologist mainly because I wasn't convinced it would help and because after spending so much on the at-home and in-clinic sleep studies, I didn't really have the funds. A few months later, I had to get a new dentist and I lucked out by finding one who is also studying and researching sleep disorders. I've been working with her on different ways to help improve my sleep. So far, I haven't had any luck unfortunately, but at least I now know about other things I can try out! No thanks to the doctor who specializes in sleep! If you've read this far, you should know that I've tried mouth taping and a night guard. My dentist also had me do an at-home sleep study which showed more details than the one I did for Dr. Slaughter. Apparently, I go into REM sleep quickly and I have many more micro-arousals than originally thought throughout the night. My dentist is the one who referred me to CSMA. CSMA has been amazing overall! The CSMA sleep study discovered that I have Hypopnea. I'm now using a CPAP machine at night. It's been almost a month and it hasn't helped with my sleepiness, but it is the next step in the process! Apparently, insurance forces you to go through all the steps or else they will deny any coverage. The insurance system is broken, but that's not for this review. Thanks for reading this long review. They did take another look at me and said the surgery went as planned now they say I have an oversized tongue which causes me to snore I think I'm giving up on this whole snoring thing.. For allergies they were wonderful. I have been allergy free for 6 years so far. They did a balloon sinuplasty That helps with my breathing. For snoring I do not recommend. He took my uvula out, which makes me cough when drinking. Snoring is as bad as ever. They wanted to do more procedures, but I gave up due to money and frustration. read more

How I became a patient: I heard enough ads on the radio that I was compelled to try it out to see if it would offer relief from snoring that my wife kept complaining about. I did sleep studies that revealed I had mild apnea, but not severe enough to warrant medical intervention. No signs of oxygen depletion. So really, I just had a snoring issue. Experience as a patient: But the wife kept complaining. So I went to see Dr. Slaughter. The diagnosis: ideal candidate for balloon sinuplasty, what all the ads I heard were advertising. You definitely feel like cattle at this place. I commend Dr. Slaughter and his operations management implementation for maximizing revenue by creating a system where patients flow through the system by touching lower cost providers (i.e. mainly staff and nurses) at large scale while paying large amounts of money. While different, so long as the outcome was as advertised (i.e. no more snoring), I didn't care much. But if you value time with your Dr. and bed-side manner, this will not be the place for you. You'll see the doctor two times: after you schedule a procedure, and right before you go under before the procedure. That's it. Procedure: My procedure, balloon sinuplasty, was MUCH MORE INTENSE than advertised. The advertisements made it seem like an out-patient procedure that you'll be able to go to work the same or next day. NOT TRUE. I was out that entire first day, and could barely get out of bed for 3 days. I'm a healthy man in my 30s. As a former athlete I have recovered from multiple surgeries quite fast. So, while everyone reacts differently from medical procedures, this was not expected, nor as advertised. That was very disappointing. Further, it felt like I had strep-throat for about 3 weeks after. I could barely eat. On the bright side, it was so difficult to eat, that I lost some weight. Post-op Experience: This is where things really went downhill for me. After the very expensive procedure, I was up-selled for allergy testing. The argument being that if I'm allergic to Austin (cedar, ragweed, mold, etc) the procedure I just went through would be useless as the inflammation would close up the nasal passages they just opened up. Shouldn't that have been the first step then? But fine, another $600 for allergy testing. As a result of the testing, I was recommended to pay for some drops I need to take for another 2-3 years. I also need to take other medication in the form of nasal sprays for the same purpose. Mind you, I've never had allergy symptoms. But at this point, I felt all-in, and didn't want to feel that I didn't do all that I could to make sure I stopped snoring. One year later: Snoring has reduced, but the wife still complains. In my last check up, they once again tried to upsell more sleep studies and procedures because the daily drops and sprays I was taking, while somewhat effective, apparently weren't enough to completely reduce my snoring. But at this point, I felt enough was enough. Conclusion: I probably didn't need this procedure, and the results weren't worth the money and the pain. Yes, I snore less loudly. But less loudly wasn't what I paid for. In my view, Dr. Slaughter has become great at selling a fairly intense out-patient procedure that is only mildly effective. He's the opposite of a low-intervention Dr. If he thinks you'll get even a small benefit, I have no doubt that he wouldn't think twice about slicing you open and charging you thousands; even if the medical benefit is negligible. That's not cool. It's not mal-practice, but it's definitely around the corner from it. read more

Nope. 7K surgery later and still snore like a freight train. He said it would be simple and straightforward and I was a perfect candidate.

Dr Slaughter has been my career SAVIOR as a professional singer and platform speaker! I cannot sing his praises enough! He is the creator of the ballon sinuplasty and this procedure is just as awesome as he is! He is personable, professional, answers your questions, and he LISTENS TO YOU AND HEARS YOU unlike the other TWO ENTs I went to. I had gone to two other ENT for vocal problems and breathing problems and they just told me to live with my problems-----that here was nothing they could do to address my health problems and singing problems and sent me on my way with prescription nasal sprays which made me even more hoarse. I had suffered for SEVEN YEARS and lost out on singing gigs that I used to have due to my singing abilities changing so drastically. I lost my job as the female lead singer at my church, I lost my job as a substitute singer for a popular cover band, and after getting physical therapy to address musculoskeletal issues that ALSO affected my voice due to emotional stress (that's a whole different story!) my voice still wasn't all the way back to normal. I was a hot holy mess! LOL!!! I was snoring really loudly, would wake up hoarse, my speaking got noticeably lower, and worse yet, I would get extremely sick every year----sometimes THREE TIMES a year within a six month period----with acute bronchitis and complete laryngitis. Dr Slaughter was the first ENT to address my deviated septum, enlarged turbinates that had me breathing through my mouth, and severe allergy issues. My surgery was quick and relatively painless. I was out and about the next day and just had a little soreness the first week so I sat out singing at church that first week. However 12 days after my surgery I was back at church singing and two Sundays in a row now (this is week three since my surgery) people have approached me asking why my voice sounded more clear and why it had more color and resonance to it! There is a marked difference in my vocal timbre! I FEEL the difference physically when I sing. I can just EXPRESS and not worry about making it to a note or not! I think I have the courage to improvise when I sing again which I used to LOVE to do! I am no longer snoring, my husband isn't complaining anymore! I wake up with no hoarseness, my throat isn't dry and sore in the mornings, and I wake up RESTED---and not sounding like a baritone anymore! My singing voice also warms up very quickly as well! I feel HUMAN again because I get QUALITY SLEEP!!!! Life-changing. I am beyond pleased with the procedures that were performed by Dan Slaughter and his team at Sinus & Snoring Specialists. After trying countless ineffective products and techniques for nearly my entire life, I was excited to find someone who would address my breathing and snoring issues in a manner that I felt would be effective. I had suspected for several years that the answer would be surgery, and I'm happy to report that the results have been nothing short of life-changing. Before my surgery I was rarely able to breathe through both of my nostrils at the same time, and when I would lie down to sleep, my breathing was often further restricted. After completing a sleep study years ago I found out that I did NOT have sleep apnea, but that I was also not getting restful sleep. After recently using a sleep tracking app on my smartphone I was able to confirm that the quality of my sleep was still measurably quite poor. After my surgery things have been very different. I can ALWAYS breathe perfectly clearly through both of my nostrils regardless of my body position. Months after the procedure it still feels a little bit odd to have my breathing feel SO open and unrestricted. I often sit and simply breathe, marveling at how much better this simple action works and feels when compared to before my surgery. And the snoring! Before my surgery I was often kicked out of my bed by my wife as she desperately tried to get her own sleep. My snoring would keep her awake nearly every night. I tried mouth guards, throat sprays, nose strips, stickers to keep my mouth shut, the tennis-ball-in-the-shirt, sleeping on my side. Nothing worked, or even helped much. I could snore in any position, even on my stomach with my face buried in a pillow. I would often lie awake at night stressing about the fact that I would be very likely to ruin my wife's sleep if I, myself, fell asleep. Since my surgery I simply DO NOT SNORE. It's just doesn't happen. In fact, it's difficult to actually make a fake snoring sound while I'm awake and trying to demonstrate the sound. I cannot cause my throat to vibrate and cause the classic snoring rumble we all know too well. I'm also much more well-rested now. I wake up easily. I don't yawn in meetings at work. I fall asleep and stay asleep all night. I don't know how else to explain it. So many of the aspects of my struggles with snoring, sleep, and daily energy are simply fixed. I just had a septoplasty, balloon sinusplasty and turbinate reduction on Thursday Dec 27th. It hurt like hell on Thursday but I was fine on Friday and I can breath for the first time in my life!!!!! Dr. Slaughter is very nice but not super personable but I don't need to be my doctors friend. I liked how quickly and efficient the staff, doc and anesthesiologist were. Modern medicine: not just for the sick! I wasn't exactly bad at sleeping to begin with; mainly it was other people that minded the snoring. Eventually, at those people's bequest, I sought out Dr. Slaughter and his technicians, who did their scans and ran their diagnostics over the course of two 1-hour appointments, determining that my septum was, indeed, quite deviant. (Childhood trauma, they say. What childhood trauma? my parents say.) And the turbulence due to the constricted nasal passage caused my uvula to elongate and thus, reverberate. Day of the surgery -- about an hour of waiting beforehand, and then in a final 15-minute sprint, they knocked me out, squared up my septum, and chopped off my uvula (all according to plan). In-and-out, 1.5 hours. Percocet got me through the first week just fine. The excruciating throat pain set in around the 7-day mark (chloraseptic throat spray HIGHLY recommended), but went away about as quickly around the 10th day. Post-op at 3 weeks in -- pretty much recovered. Definitely no throat pain, though still some nasal cavity soreness. Snoring at 25%, as reported by third parties. 8 weeks in -- good as it's gonna get. Snoring is rare and even then, faint, ~10% compared to before surgery. I sleep harder (more efficiently), waking less often. Dunno if I'd say I'm a new man, as promised, but I can definitely breathe easier and sleep better (not to mention others within earshot). Logistics ($$$): * Dr. Slaughter / Sinus & Snoring specialists ensured my insurance cooperated smoothly throughout, reminding me to get my pre-approval for the initial CT scan, etc. * Insurance didn't want to pay for the uvulopalatoplasty, but since I was going to be in surgery anyway, Dr. Slaughter & co. cut the price in half ($450 instead of $900). * Beyond the $450 elective, total cost was around $200 (4 co-pays: consultation, surgery, anesthesia, prescription + 2 OTC nasal sprays) Highly recommended. read more

I think it was Maya Angelou who said that people will forget the words you said, but always remember the way you made them feel. I was a little afraid going in for surgery. I even wore a shirt that read "Faith over Fear" Nurse Jennifer's smile and the kindness that shone from her eyes immediately provided me with such comfort that it was the strongest memory of the day. She called this morning to make sure I was ok and if I had any questions. My initial appointment scared me as it was like a factory assembly line with each person saying their piece and moving me to the next. I missed the personal component. I got just about everything done... deviated septum, septoplasty, uvula removed, and the shot of acid in the back of the throat (and why was my throat shot BEFORE I went under? That was a horrible memory.) Anyhow, for the first couple months my snoring was only 30% better based on Snore Lab. 4 months in my nose was still sore from surgery, I choke on things I drink because my uvula is gone (don't do this!), and my throat is scratchy. Two years later.... my snoring seems worse and I choke on liquids because the uvula is actually useful. I researched YouTube videos of other ENT doctors and they say don't remove uvula. Also, looking back, I didn't like how the whole process felt like a money making machine. From the GoPro up the nose to sell me on the expensive surgery to the $100 post-op office visit where all I got was an expensive tool to pick my nose. I feel I was misdiagnosed, based on follow up with other doctors who told me I was oversold. I only saw the doctor when I was sold on all three procedures and a fading glimpse of him with a needle piercing the back of my throat just before I went under. Ouch! Saved my life. Literally. I had sinus surgery with this amazingly skilled physician many years ago. My sinus infection and problem was so bad he told me it was the worst he had ever seen. Since then, no sinus issues to speak of, but I did have a sudden nosebleed a few weeks ago, then another, then another. Went to see Dr. Slaughter and he fixed me right up, noting that my sinuses still looked great from the surgery 12 years ago. He's wonderful...warm, down to earth, funny. I cannot recommend Dr. Slaughter highly enough. For over three years I've suffered from sleep apnea, forcing me to use a CPAP to sleep at night. While a CPAP helped, I still suffered from fatigue during the day. After several physicians told me they could not help, Dr. Slaughter told me with confidence he could completely cure my sleep apnea with a simple surgical procedure. Three months after my surgery (which was fast and painless), my sleep apnea is completely cured. My AHI went from 15 apneas/min to less than 1 apnea/min. I no longer need to sleep with a CPAP and this is the most energy that I've had in years. I will be attending medical school later this year and am sure that Dr. Slaughter is one of the most qualified sleep physicians. If you have any sleep issues, he is the best! read more

I went to see Dr. Slaughter after having my wife complain about m snoring and I was told I was a perfect candidate. I was allergy tested (which was the only thing that actually worked) and then given a description of what he would do. Not only have I wasted $5000, I no longer have a uvula and I still snore just as bad if not worse. Oh yeah, it was not painless and I couldn't go right back to work due to my nose bleeding and bandages. My wife has unfortunately had get all to used to either nudging me or having me outright going into the living room for a while until she falls asleep first. They sure didn't give that impression in their commercials. The cherry on top of this is that after I went back to see them about the snoring I was told that I also needed a $1300 oral appliance to help stop the snoring. Why didn't they just tell me that before I blew $5k?! No warranty with your work eh, doc? I wish I could get away with that in my line of work. Bottom line, shop around. read more

I was so happy excited to do the procedure after I consulted with Dr. Slaughter and this team. Although I had high hopes, I understood that results aren't guaranteed, but boy was I disappointed. I will give them this, the procedure is fast! I was out in a flash and next thing I knew they were wheeling me out. Next is the recovery. The nose will be a little sore but the throat is a bear. I mean it, you will be roaring like a bear. it's like having the worst sore throat ever. Results, I did notice an increase of airflow for the first couple of weeks while using nasal spray as part of the recovery. My wife noticed a small decrease of snoring but after the recovery it was like the results was non-existent, as shown by the sleep apnea before/after results. Dr. Slaughter is everything that was I looking for. I had structural issues with my breathing, snoring/sleep problems and terrible allergies. Dr. Slaughter is the first doctor that I've come to that has examined the connections between these problems and actively worked to resolve them by giving a full treatment solution, instead of just part of the solution. He's also incredibly kind and very informative about everything going on throughout the entire process. I am very happy to have him as my doctor and I look forward to going through allergy treatment with him when he moves into his own office in the next few months. If you have issues with snoring and/or breathing, this is hands-down the best doctor that you can go to to help resolve those issues. Trust me, you will NOT regret it! read more

I would not recommend this place, based on the overall lack of common courtesy. Rude employees at the front desk, and in the checkout desk in the back. After my procedure, I was rushed out the door. I woke up in a wheelchair, and was told to "wake up", I asked to lay down in a bed for a while, I was told that I needed to go home. These folks are just "herding cattle". The doctor did not even take the time to see me at follow up. It appears the procedure worked, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. Find a Doctor that actually cares, and is not just trying to make $$. $4300.00 for this, you could have at least been there for the follow up. read more

Incredibly well-run practice. Great communication during scheduling, at the appointment, and follow-up afterwards. It seems that each person, in their own role, is the best-in-class for what they do. Excellent implementation of technology (in-office CT, informative videos, iPad as an interactive communication device during consultation, and real-time dictation of the medical record during the visit). I am highly encouraged that Dr. Slaughter and team understand my health condition and have identified a clear pathway (including pharmaceutical and procedural options) for my treatment. I had multiple procedures for my sinuses, soft palate and deviated septum to help with snoring as well as starting allergy drop therapy. The recovery time from procedures were a bit more than I expected. Mainly with soreness in nose/throat. Overall nothing terrible. My husband reports that my snoring is 95% better. The office, the staff and the process was pretty seamless and everyone was super nice and accommodating. I now breathe clearly through both nostrils and never even knew how blocked I was until a couple months post surgery when I realized I wasn't mouth breathing any more! The allergy drops have definitely decreased the severity of my allergies. I won't make any final judgements until a year has gone by. Overall it has been well worth it! read more

I highly recommend Dr. Slaughter and his procedure for balloon sinuplasty. I had my procedure about three weeks ago and I couldn't be more happy. 15 years ago I had a deviated septum and I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I had a very invasive surgical procedure but it didn't eliminate my snoring or sleep apnea and my ability to breathe out of my nose became progressively worse. When I went to see Dr. Slaughter the first time my MRI still showed a crooked nasal passage. I decided to do the procedure to correct my problems. The procedure was done in 20 minutes and I had ZERO pain. The next day I could breathe out of my nose perfectly! I also had an allergy test done and started the allergy drops. After the procedure my wife says my snoring is down by 90%! Don't wait any longer to feel great! read more
