Dr. Conlin is friendly, professional and listens to patients. The prep really is the worst part of colonoscopy procedure. When you meet him, he will put you at ease and will explain everything. Colon cancer is preventable. Just do it! read more

Saw Dr Conlin for esophageal spasms. He was very knowledgeable in explaining the handful of reasons why this was happening and what treatment could look like but understandably wanted an endoscopy to see what was going on. Everything was kind and copacetic until scheduling the endoscopy. I called back to ask just a ballpark amount for this procedure since I didn't yet meet my deductible. Front office demeanor completely changed and I was made to feel that I was asking something offensive. In a series of calls I was yelled at and given lectures on how American insurance works, told "that's not how this works", told that my insurance company would never provide me something like this and nor would they, told I need to call the facility/an anesthesia contracted company/pathologists/a lab on my own, that I needed to somehow know every CPT code they might use (which I got sooner from google than them), tax ID codes to the facilities, etc. What I was never given was a ballpark price. I was asking a rough guess. Not for full accounting charts and graphs. I had no idea if this costs $1000, $5k, $10k. Never got a single clear answer from Dr Conlin's office and they refused to tell me even what their doctors fee was so I could somewhat gauge that portion (saying "what we charge depends on your insurance") Ultimately it was my insurance co that said the average out of pocket cost was $1700-2750 for this area, but Sutter affiliates had higher than average charges compared to other hospitals for this. My gut told me not to go here, but I needed this issue looked at. My endoscopy appt was made for 9am, but the appt reminder calls I received all said to show up at 6am for a 7am procedure time. NBD. Arrived at 6am and presented my Covid test but they said they would not accept a rapid Binax test (the type of Covid test was never clarified prior and this is what the county hospital and SF dept of health use in urgent care). They wanted me to pay to get another rapid test next door. Thanked them for their time and told them this was all the signs I needed to not go here. I felt I could trust Dr Conlin himself but did not have a positive experience here due to the scheduling and front office experience, and distrust of the obscure billing practices under the Sutter umbrella. I unfortunately would not recommend. Ultimately went with another endoscopy center that was more kind and immediately helpful with this info. read more

One does not expected to leave the office of a gastroenterologist to feel delighted, However, that was how I felt after seeing him. As someone who uses a HMO plan, I am accustomed to assembly line health care, care that is impersonal and time efficient Not only is Dr. Conlin personable. He gives patients the respect of making sure his patients are well-informed. Unlike the prior doctor, he spent time discussing how this colonoscopy could be more successful than the one I had a few months prior. It turns out a diet that is heavy on nuts, should be avoided for a week before 'the cleaning." My last doctor simply wrote that I had prepared poorly and I was rescheduled to go through the horrendous process of fasting and drinking a nauseating prep. This informed me I was poorly prepared rather than prepared poorly. Moreover, he provided printed information that helped my address other concerns. I wish to also thank his front desk for her persistence and forgiveness of my failure to respond to her efforts to contact me. Could not recommend any more highly, Dr. Conlin and everyone there are incredible. I went in for my first colonoscopy and everyone was great, the office staff helping me out on the forms, etc, the nurses answering my questions, he anesthesiologist being warm, friendly and giving me very thorough answers. And Dr. Conlin is the greatest, you can feel he really cares about his patients and loves people and what he does. He has an unusually great personality (especially for a doctor!) that makes you feel you are in great hands. The antitheology dose was perfect and the procedure left no aftereffects even though I had 3 big polyps cut. I felt great as soon as I woke up and had zero aftereffects. And Dr. Conlin called (on the weekend!!) to give me the results and answered all questions very patiently. The person who recommended him and his staff said they were fanastic and they were! Someone just up-voted my last review, so I wanted to add a little more info for those with Lower GI issues since my "healthy" family has a history of polyps/colon cancer. I eventually found a great doc and am free of my previously stressful GI life. For those with GI issues, you might want to consider DECREASING the amount of fiber in your diet...to ZERO. I've been experimenting with my diet for +10 years due to GI pain and the best help I received was from switching from a vegetarian to carnivore diet. Not only did it solve the late in the day gassy-ness, I don't have random spikey pains throughout my body (From oxalates, google it!). I've also lost 30 lbs WITHOUT hunger as the reduction in carbs has meant greater satiation. Win-win! If you do decide to go this route, please do your research. (justmeat.co is a great place to start.) There is an adjustment period of 2-7 days where you will need to be near a bathroom as your body will "flush" its inflammation, so learn how to deal with that transition. I've had ZERO intestinal issues since switching and have experienced improved health from nearly every health marker... and I'm the only one in my family with no polyps. read more

The office refused to give me an appointment after three weeks waiting to see the right doctor. His office is totally unorganized. (My husband doesn't have a Yelp account but wanted to review this doctor. His words below!) This is a review of Dr. Conlin's gastroenterology practice and his colonoscopy procedure. I saw Dr. Conlin for the first time a couple of weeks ago after years of confusing abdomen pains and associated problems with my digestive system. Immediately I was amazed at the attention and comprehensiveness of Dr. Conlin. He spent nearly 1.5 hours listening to my history and talking to me about my problems. This was truly incredible and I'd never experienced such a focused and substantial session at a doctor's office. Additionally, his style is very methodical, and I felt like I was in very capable hands as we worked through the possible issues. He is very clear, honest and thorough. I came away with a number of paths forward, starting with simple diet changes, all the way up to a colonoscopy. I really appreciated this tiered approach. As it happens, I ended up doing the colonoscopy today, and I wanted to write down my experience while it's still fresh. TL;DR, it was great and I am extremely glad Dr. Conlin completed my procedure. 5 stars, through and through. I was very nervous about the colonoscopy. Nervous about the prep and the procedure. I don't think there is reason to be nervous about either. The prep: I mean, it's not fun, but it's not that bad. If you get bad hangovers, those are worse than this. The prep involves two sessions of drinking what tastes like a very sugary cough syrup, which each make you have to use the bathroom quite a bit. I won't go into the details. Google it. My experience was pretty straightforward I think: fasting, drinking the yucky drink, and using the bathroom for a few hours at a time (but not constant, I was able to watch movies etc). Make sure you follow all the instructions from the doctor and don't stray to far from the bathroom! The procedure: man, this was easy. I arrived at 10:50am for my 12pm appointment. Shortly after arriving, I was taken into a prep area where I changed into hospital gowns, got an IV inserted, and waited for my turn. The nurses were super nice and professional. No pain with the IV insertion (though my gosh I was nervous about it). If I had one nit, it would be that this area's privacy is enforced by curtains, which means you can hear the conversation on either side of you. No big deal, but the conversations are usually pretty..um..detailed, so it can be a little embarrassing. After about 15 minutes I was taken into the operating room. I was VERY nervous. My heart was beating really fast and seeing all the crazy medical equipment made me even more nervous. They hooked me up to oxygen, connected some sensors and had me lay on my side. The anesthesiologist was very nice (he had even called me the night before to introduce himself!) and told me what he was about to do. After he started the medication I went to sleep in probably 10 seconds. I still remember thinking "is this worki...." Next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room. Literally did not feel a single thing. Dr. Conlin came in immediately after and we talked about my results right away (with pictures!). After another few minutes I was ready to go. I'm home now and feel normal. Or at least, as normal as one can feel after using the bathroom as much as I did in the prep phase lol. Again, this was a really smooth and enjoyable experience. Hello to all readers.my name is Yan D, It is only my second posting on Yelp, but I think good doctors should be rewarded with at least thank you and good refence. After reading other postings about doctors I came to conclusion that people care about front doctor office and doctor procedure as well. I went to see doctor Daniel for colonoscopy. Front office was very helpful, polite and patient with explanations when needed. They managed to give me appointment sooner then I expected due to cancelation and put me on waiting list for procedure that worked for me as well. Dr Daniel Conlin from first office visit took his time asking and answering my questions, with no rush and real interest in my problem. He saw me before procedure explaining what will happen and right after procedure telling me what took place and what was found. Procedure went smoothly slept, woke up, went home, no complications. i have medical as insurance, many good doctors dont take medical, this doctor was very rare good exception. I strongly recommend this doctor to all (seems all reviews do as well). We need more doctors like that read more

Dr. Conlin is one of the best doctors in San Francisco. He goes above and beyond, which is rarely seen in medicine today. Friday afternoon I was in medical crisis mode and Dr. Conlin stayed after hours to see me on an emergency basis. He then followed up with a phone call on Saturday morning just to make sure I was all right. How many doctors will extend themselves after hours to make sure you're doing OK when they're not getting paid? Dr. Conlin is caring and compassionate beyond words and I'm grateful to be one of the many patients he serves in the truest sense of the word. I understand the difference between competent and exceptional medical care and Dr. Conlin does not hesitate to provide the latter. read more

My experience with Dr. Conlin was frustrating and disappointing. He was recommended to me by my GP, so I went to him after some radical stomach surgery. Unbeknownst to me, I had, post-surgery, developed an abdominal hernia, which I called him several times to ask about. He returns patients' calls after work, at around 7 PM, so he sounds pretty over his work day when he calls - rushed and dismissive. He never asked me to come in so he could check the bulge out, just suggested that the huge, hard bowling ball on my stomach must be gas or diet. I went dairy-free, gluten-free, for months, until I finally decided to send him a photograph via email (it was during Covid by now), with the tag "this is just not right." He called me and left an "ah-ha!" message: "Oh! You've got a hernia!" Again, it had been months. I went to another doctor for the surgery, and he was brilliant. But I regret very much the time I spent trying to get Dr. Conlin to treat my issue seriously, or even, to give me any attention at all. read more

I went to Dr Conlin with bloating and right upper quadrant pain, nausea and dry heaving, for a second opinion, as my current GI did not have a clear diagnosis. Unfortunately he saw the previous GI's notes on the chart and decided to be completely dismissive, suggesting things like "we all belch", "abdominal wall laxity due to ageing", and "perhaps a pinched nerve". I asked why a pinched nerve would cause so much pain when I ate any spicy or sour foods, and he just shook his head and said "I have no idea". He also said "Dr X is a very good doctor, if he couldn't diagnose it I don't think I can". I felt completely gaslighted as though "it was all in my head", and guilty as though I was "unfaithful" to my current GI somehow in coming to seek a second opinion. Towards the end of the visit, almost as an afterthought, he threw in a 'gastric emptying study' requisition as a consolation. read more

I had a very similar experience to many of the lower-star reviewers. Dr. Conlin's office staff was courteous and helpful, but the doctor was not. I should have interviewed the doctor before agreeing to anything as another reviewer had. Stupidly, I sat by while my concerns were also met with a condescending tone and surprise rather than understanding. He glossed over my symptoms and his initial solution was that I should lose weight. I have been seeing a personal trainer and have been working on my fitness for the past year with a focus on abdominal strength, so I though this was suspicious. I was desperate for a solution, though, so I persisted. I even went through with the stupidly expensive endoscopy which bore no results at all. I did however come away with a tight, offset jaw from the bite guard used during the procedure. I would have thought the doctor and anesthesiologist would catch something like that during the procedure. But as another reviewer said, the doctor seems like a "burnout, older MD." Probably just going through the motions to get the cash. I did not receive any sort of follow up from the doctor, either, which sends the message that he does't actually care. I am no closer to solving my issue and the only solution he could come up with for my case and for most similar cases, is to take proton pump inhibitors for the rest of my life, which he SHOULD know are only supposed to be taken in cycles. Save yourself some time, money and hassle. Go someplace else and make sure you research your doctor thoroughly and interview them to make sure they aren't just trying to placate you. read more

I've just recently starting seeing Dr. Conlin and wanted to confirm the reviews that I've read about him and his office. Dr. Conlin is patient, thorough, comprehensive, suggests options, asks lots of questions to try to get to a better understanding of your situation which I very much appreciated. I had a procedure at the Golden Gate location and the staff there was friendly and very attentive. Procedure prep was far less horrific than I expected and the actual procedure was simple and painless. Follow up from his office and Dr. Conlin himself was immediate and helpful. So basically, I checked this site before my procedure and now I know why the responses are this way. Dr Conlin is good for telling you what are the physical symptoms and what should be done. However, he spent a total of 20 minutes with me between the office and the procedure. You go through the procedure and then he gives you a proton pump inhibitor and some anti-inflamation drugs (that actually have some of the same side effects, diarhea, cramping, constipation) and costs $325/month. When I asked how long should I be on these he said "most people stay on them forever". I didn't accept what the Dr told me. I didn't believe that I had too much stomach acid. I sought a second opinion. I went to Dr Roberts at Sutter who is an integrative Dr. He prescribed a Heidldberg test which actually showed that I have NO stomach acid. Believe it or not people you can get the same side effects with NO as with TOO much. If you don't know anything about stomach acid please read up on it. I also took at test that showed I have "leaky gut", yeast and a parasite. So now that I've done all this I have a completely different picture from Dr Conlin said was wrong and BOY was he wrong. Dr Roberts is fantastic. I can't say enough. He put me on a HCL and digestive enzymes and a Glutamine supplement to heal the gut. After 2 weeks I'm feeling fantastic. No proton pump inhibitor, no anti-inflamation drugs. I'm also suspecting that after my gut is healed I'll no longer need the cholesterol drugs my other Dr so quickly put me on when that shot up. All in all, why didn't the Dr just prescribe the PPI and the anti-inflam? The reason I found is that a colonoscopy costs around $4500 between the center, the Dr, the anestesiologist and the toxicology lab. Nice work if you can get it huh? So beware those that have a high deductible. I'm so sick of western medicine always trying to treat the symptom instead of the root of the problem. In this case Dr Colin couldn't have been more wrong. BTW, the FAKE reviews are pretty easy to spot. The one liners with no picture are a dead give away. Mike read more

If I would have listened to Dr. Conlin's diagnosis I would be fighting Colon Cancer right now. Thank god I have strong instincts, I decided to get a 2nd opinion which potentially saved my life. I urge you to either skip this doctor or get a 2nd opinion. His instincts are not correct and I would not trust him as my doctor. read more

I've been ill for 7 months. I've only known Dr. Conlin for 5 days, and in these 5 days, Dr. Conlin figured it all out with much work and dedication, including nighttime phone calls to me. An amazing doctor. Last Monday an M.D. referred me to Dr. Conlin. On Tuesday Dr. Conlin saw me in his office for a short discussion of my problem. On Wednesday he scoped me and showed me photos of 4 ulcers in my gastrointestinal tract, and told me that when there are that many, they are probably malignant. He sent in for biopsies. On Thursday he phoned me, I told him I was very weak, and he advised I get a couple units of blood due to anemia caused by blood loss from the ulcers. His office set up blood transfusion for Friday and CAT scan for Saturday. Saturday morning he phoned me with results of the biopsy (all 4 ulcers tested positive). Saturday night he phoned me with results of the CAT scan. He referred me to an oncologist who he said would order a PET scan and take over my case (to try to cure the malignancy). Dr. Conlin moves fast! He is very skilled, very knowledgeable, very hardworking, and very dedicated to his patients. I am very grateful, and feel lucky to have been able to receive his care. read more

Update to my first review. I just left another follow up with Dr. Lin (the best!) and she definitively diagnosed me with Achalasia. She also recommended that I do the surgery and provided me with a great surgeon. My manometry results failed, showing that I had high pressure in the LES at rest, failure of the LES to relax and also an absence of peristaltic contractions. Dr. Conlin was ADAMENENT that I didn't have Achalasia and that I wouldn't need surgery because I wasn't a "40 yr old white male". I am SO Grateful that my insurance allows me to schedule specialists on my own without a referral or else I wouldn't have found Dr Mimi Lin and Dr Conlin would have done what the other 6 GI Dr's did --- tell me I had GERD and take PPI's read more

Dr. Conlin is a gastroentolgist. In case you're wondering what that means, he deals with your digestive system. Much of his work is done at the San Francisco Endoscopy Center. Anyway, I've reached a point in life where you're sent to doctors like Dr. Conlin. His staff is friendly and helpful. It's good to know exactly what you need to do when preparing for a visit to the SF Endoscopy Center and his staff sends you very detailed instructions. Here's a helpful hint: have your procedure done first thing in the morning. You'll be glad you did. I've had to wait a couple of days to write this review as the anesthesia you get is amazingly powerful. In fact, all I really remember is Dr. Conlin introducing himself to me and his team and asking if I would like to be lightly or heavily sedated. Opting for the latter, I have no recollection discussing the results of my exam with Dr. Conlin. I'm told by my honey, that Dr. Conlin was polite and answered all my questions even if I can't remember asking them! I even have color photos thanks to Dr. C., but no dear Yelpers, I'm not going to post them on my profile. So, if you too are "at that time in life", ask your doctor to refer you to Dr. C. if he/she can. He has an excellent bedside manner, not that you'll remember much of it. read more

I'm giving one star because Dr. Conlin himself is a great guy at making you feel great pre-endoscopy and follows up after regarding the results. The remaining comes from the service of the staff there. I was quoted a specific amount after providing my health insurance information and after paying that amount directly to their clinic, I'm getting another bill from my provider saying I owe a lot more. This level of inaccuracy is misleading and makes you wonder the integrity of the entire process. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Conlin. I had been having GI symptoms for 10 month when I went to see Dr. Conlin to get a second opinion. I had seen my PMD and another Gastroenterologist who did not diagnose all that I was dealing with. Dr. Conlin took the time to get a thorough history. He diagnosed me with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. He ordered the most sensitive test to diagnose me in the earliest stages. I am on medication and feeling better. My HMO doctor referred me to Dr. Conlin for a colonoscopy last year - Oct 17, 06. I've never had a colonoscopy before, and went as a precaution due to family history: I'd just come back from visiting a close relative who'd been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Dr. Conlin and his associates were all very professional, and very quick to make me feel at ease. That's very important at a time like this when you have to swallow your pride. As Scott C noted, the anesthesia is good. I experienced no pain or discomfort at all. I do however recall the discussion after the procedure, even though I was groggy. Just as a note: Those pills they prescribe for you to take the day before - if it seems to be taking awhile, they'll eventually kick in. It took a couple hours longer than I expected. I have a clean bill of health, and a much improved diet. I will go back to Dr. Conlin in a couple years for my follow up. read more

Experienced, Dedicated and Kind Let's face it, no one likes to go to a doctor for most of the things Dr. Conlin specializes in. But I was relieved to find a doc who made an uncomfortable exam less awkward. He has a warm, professional demeanor that put me at ease. He even personally followed up with a phone call (over the weekend!) to give me the results of my colonoscopy and put my mind at east - a task he easily could have handed off to his office staff on Monday morning. I had been hospitalized twice for the same reason and I have had the best experience with Dr. Daniel Conlin. He and his associates are wonderfully helpful and genuinely seem to care about each case they work on. If it wasn't for him and the fellow doctors that work specifically with him I don't feel I would be where I am now. When I went into the hospital I was unable to keep food down and was in horrible pain causing me to be always drugged up. Now I can live like a normal person with very little issues. My flexible daytime schedule has made me the go-to guy for taking family and friends home from the colonoscopy ritual. (We all have our callings.) Most of us go to Dr. Conlin, and he consistently give us (the patient and/or their pre-authorized for information driver) clear, no-nonsense-but-friendly information. Dr. Conlin explains everything ahead of time and after. He's on time, and no one in my circle of friends -- including a couple people with some health issues which require endoscopies and more stuff -- has received anything but quality, professional, personable care. Pretty amazing record. And, oh yeah. The colonoscopy is such a nothing procedure. Why the angst and hype about it? If you're 50 (or sooner if it's indicated) get this easy test done -- it's a life saver. Ok, I had the colonoscopy done yesterday! It was first great to see Ricki the GI nurse who I used to work with years ago. That was great. Then Dr. Conlin came right on time and we got started and I was so at peace. He gave me the great drugs and I did see my procedure on the screen with a few fades in and out. I felt like I had floated out of my body! I felt NOTHING!! it was amazing! It took only 14 minutes and I was done :-) Great news is I had no polyps and I am 53 and very fortunate to be in excellent health. The prep is a breeze with the OsmoPrep pills. Make sure you take them with Gatorade (not the red one). I used lemon. You want to keep your electrolytes in balance. I started cleansing a week prior and so this went very smoothly (no pun intended). If you are taking a supplement with iron be sure to tell Dr. Conlin so he can see if you need to stop it in advance. I went to see dr. Dr. Conlin a few years ago with two entirely different GI problems. He Was able to diagnose one of the problems but the other went completely unnoticed until a different doctor ordered an MRI and it showed in the results. At the time, he was nice and caring and good at following-up. However, as time went by, he became less and less caring. I was unable to make an apt. With him after ER even though they had called his office to let him know I needed to be seen and I suffered greatly during that time. He was less and less available in his SF office, less and less caring and no longer followed up with me. What others have said here, about his condescending behavior, I expreinced as well. A doctor you can actually reach when you need him?? Absolutely! I've been seeing Dr Conlin for about 4 years now. He's been awesome through the years, but now I've got to write about him. The other day I had a pill stuck in my throat for three hours. (I have a stricture in my esophagus.) When first attempts at calling my primary doc totally failed, I suddenly remembered: call Dr Conlin! I immediately spoke to his office staff (yes, a real live person--she's also wonderful) who gave me some advice per Dr Conlin. When that didn't work, I went to the ER and Dr Conlin personally called me while I was waiting. He then phoned ME back early the next morning to schedule an endoscopy the same day. The man is good at what he does, very gentle, kind and compassionate. He always personally checks up on you after your procedure. Hard to believe when doctors are so busy these days. read more

My experience with Dr. Conlin was great, I am not sure what happened with the others to give him a one star. My consultation with him was great, he seemed to truly listen and thought with the several issues over the years to do a colonoscopy. The whole procedure was handled extremely professionally, all the staff were courteous as well as Dr. Conlin. He asked me to bring in the collagen powder I had been taking to see the ingredients as it has helped me and he was open to the idea that this supplement could help me which many doctors may roll their eyes at. I received a call the next day from Dr. Conlin himself with the results which I thought was great and very good patient care. The only negative part of my experience is one of the receptionists that answers the phone. One is lovely and understands this is not a great topic and people are not the most comfortable dealing with these health issues so have many questions. The other one who has an attitude, does not like answering any questions or explain anything and seems like she does not like people or being in this role. If you can get passed this and ignore her, your experience should be fine as I almost did not go because she was so rude. read more

I came in for a consult and to get advice on the acid reflux medicine I was prescribed and dr conlin was attentive and knowledgable. Dr Conlin was great. The colonoscopy (in 2006) went smoothly. However while I was in recovery, all the nurses were huddled together to pay attention to somebody selling makeup. The pyramid scheme seller lady was welcomed into the recovery area so she had full view of everybody recovering. I didn't appreciate someone from the general public being let into a doctors space while clients laid in various states of consciousness nearby in their beds. What happened to privacy?!? I thought the nurses should be paying attention to their paying clients instead. I have another colonoscopy scheduled for March 2017. I hope recovery goes better. If so, I'll note it here. read more
