Tremendously knowledgeable and will easily answer your questions. He's kind and calm by nature which is reassuring for the tender nature of the subject. Dr Michael Verhille is an exceptional GI Doctor. In 35 years living in the Bay Area and having had many interactions with healthcare professionals I have to say, that Dr Verhille took me back to my childhood memories on what a Doctor should be. A bastion of safety and trust. Someone you can put your life in their hands. That's my impression of Dr Verhille. It troubles me to write this review because I think Dr. Verhille is actually very good at what he does IF you can maneuver around his office policies. My issue - I was temporarily disabled and his office declined to help. I was in a bad accident that left me wheelchair bound, requiring outlandishly expensive medical transport to leave the house. I'd seen Dr. Verhille previously years ago; my husband is (or was) his patient. Something potentially serious showed up in a scan which required an opinion from a gastroenterologist. I called Verhille's office and asked to set up a phone or video appointment. His assistant called back; I explained my situation. I was politely but firmly informed he only sees people in person for a first appointment. I asked his assistant to speak with him, to see if he would make an exception. To the best of my recollection, no call back. I didn't pursue the matter further but doctors are required by ADA law to provide reasonable accommodation to the disabled. Giving a bedridden patient a phone appointment is certainly within reason. UCSF was far more responsive. My husband and I both subsequently shifted our care to UCSF. P.S. A few years ago when my husband was scheduled for a procedure, the stand-alone facility used by Verhille refused to disclose whether the anesthesiology practice they use was in-network with our health plan. They finally looked into it after I stated we'd have to cancel the appointment, but they were definitely curt. read more

Dr. Verhille is my go-to guy when it comes to everything gastrointestinal. His staff is very professional and the front office is very helpful and caring. He treated me for my recurring Hemorroids and I regularly and annually partake in his scheduled colonoscopies. It doesn't hurt that he was trained by the best, the late great Dr. Willie Schaupp, who operated on my Hemorroids back in 1988. Dr. Verhille s professionalism and attention to detail is surpassed only by his wonderful sense of humor and care for his patients. I recommend this care team highly. If you are over 45 ... don't put off colorectal screaming... It may just save your life! read more

BEST DOCTOR I EVER TALKED TO!!! Dr. Verhille is SOOO patient and the BEST LISTENER I ever conversed with! He has 30+ years of experience, is very knowledgeable at what he does, and makes you feel at ease with him. He takes his time to explain everything to you, how the different organs of your body interact with each other, and why things could be happening depending on your situation. He showed up on time for my appointment (kinda rare for doctors if you ask me). Leaving a message with his staff for him to get back to you generally takes about 1 business day unless it's urgent. I can't recommend him hard enough, you gotta see for yourself. read more

Updated review. I had a significant case of acid reflux. It got so bad I lost 14 pounds in a month. Dr Verhille did extensive testing to make certain it wasn't something more than acid reflux. Dr Verhille prescribed some meds and gave some detailed advice on what to do. I followed his advice completely and got over the reflux. Dr Verhille is an experienced talented physician. read more

My GP Dr. Dave Segars whom I trust implicitly & with my life referred to me to Dr Michael Verhille for my ten year screening & colonoscopy. Dr Verhille's office scheduled an appointment & off I went for an office intervention and scheduling a colonoscopy the following week. The interview & intake by Dr. Verhille & his office staff is nothing less than top o' the line professional treatment by all. Dr. Verhille took the time to go over my history & describe in detail all that is involved in the Colonoscopy. If I could give him six stars, I surely would for his kindness, no attitude and great bedside manner and his pure brilliance of the G.I. system. I am 70 and have had colonoscopies in the past. Dr. Verhille is like Disneyland where you are treated like a king with respect & kindness and a smooth & efficient office staff. They walk you through the preparation process providing easy to read instructions while checking that you are safe to take the test via constant checks on you current health and history. To make matters even better the best was yet to come . . . going for actual colonoscopy just a few blocks away to the very professional and clean San Francisco Endoscopy Center (3468 California). The Center was well-staffed by efficient yet not rushing you through a few forms they need completed such as what meds you are taking and when. The nurses escort you into a clean pre-operating room where you get your BP and other vitals set up. The anesthesiolist MD Dr James Glass that called me the previous evening arrived in the room. Dr. Glass double checked that I was very safe for the colonoscopy. These people cross the "T"s and dot the "I"s from hoof to vent! It's not a factory but a very peaceful and professional Endoscopy Center that does it all and has everything under the sun that a hospital could offer only with out all the congestion & rat race in a hospital. Dr Verhille arrived in the colonoscopy suite. He checked on me and answered all my last minute thoughts. I was so comfortable. He told me turn on my left side. The very professional anethisiologist Dr. Glass put me under the mildest yet smoothest short term & very comfortable "sleep" I've ever had. Wow! What a wonderful experience. read more

I have had two colonoscopy procedures with Dr. Verhille (ten years apart). Since I was under anesthesia during the procedures, I cannot comment on this aspect of my experience. I recently had a colonoscopy performed by Dr. Verhille and it was no problem at all. He is very approachable and answered all my questions in a respectful manner on the day of the procedure. His office staff was very thoughtful and efficient. They helped me reschedule and find a sooner appointment when I needed it. Note to those reading this: colonoscopy prep and anesthesia has improved greatly in the past ten years so don't be anxious about scheduling this important test. read more

The bad - 1. He showed no interest in my condition (Crohn's Disease). The office visit was short, he basically had me explain my disease and what I've been through, he nodded, charged me for a office visit, and passed me off to the office assistant. Wow. I'm charged $400 for telling YOU what's wrong with me? 2. One of the staff members told me they contract out with the hospital to do remicade infusions. I didn't realize it at the time, but contract does not mean you pay the physician office price, it means nothing. I means they dont have a contract. It means they just send you to the hospital where you awkwardly sit in a random chair by the nurse's desk for a couple of hours, hooked up to an IV. You will pay the outpatient hospital service. So - for the same treatment I got in Michigan in my gastroenterologist's office for a $20 co-pay, I recieve at Cal Pacific Medical for $9,000 (minus whatever your insurance covers at the hospital). Bogus! 3. I haven't heard from his office in 3 months, since he first and only office visit. They don't schedule my infusions unless I ask - which is a bit risky when you're dealing with patients who are at risk for death if they don't get infusions every six weeks. Don't you think? The good - You know, I'm not really sure. It's it too much of me to ask that my doctor should take interest in my disease and personal condition, give me a proper description of what a contract with a hospital looks like, and checks to make sure I'm still alive? read more

Have had three colonoscopies done by Dr. Verhille over the years, and he's been excellent. He takes time to explain things clearly and writes them down for me. The people who take his phone calls are not so hot. It's very hard to get through to them on the phone. You punch in several numbers and they put you immediately on hold for a long, long time. I am finally writing this review 10 years after my husband's passing while a longterm patient of Dr. Verhille's. My husband's case was complex, and I do not blame Dr. Verhille for his death, but I do blame him for his insensitivity to it. Dr. Verhille was one of 5 different specialists who treated him over several years. Each of the other four communicated their condolences to me shortly after he passed away. I heard nothing from Dr. Verhille. I went to his office and left a note in case he hadn't heard the news. I never heard a word from him, even after that. Dr. Verhille also sends patients to a separate facility from the hospital for colonoscopies, which charges more than insurance pays for the procedure. He is part owner of the facility, so the extra charges that the patient incurs above the insurance reimbursement go into his and his partners' pockets. read more

Based on Crystal K's review, I suspect that Dr. Verhille isn't interested in treating patients who have autoimmune diseases. If you have an autoimmune condition, look for another GI. I have Graves' disease which is an endocrine problem, but patients with autoimmune thyroid disease have a higher than normal risk of also getting autoimmune gastritis. But, I'm getting ahead of myself here. Here's my tale: When I first met Dr. Verhille last August, I had been to the emergency room twice in the past two weeks because of severe heartburn symptoms. The first time I went to the ER, my GP's office had told me to go in order to make sure that I wasn't having a heart attack (I wasn't). The second time I went it was because, despite having been given a prescription for proton pump inhibitors to take in the morning by my GP, I was still experiencing fire in my chest at night to such a degree that I hadn't slept in two days. So, when I first met him and he told me I had acid reflux and to take the PPI once in the morning and once in the evening (and he gave me a bunch of samples out of concern that my insurance wouldn't cover the second daily dose) and I was able to sleep the night after seeing him, I thought he was a godsend. Hence, the second star. Going back to him two weeks later, however, I started to question my initial analysis of him. At the time, he gave me a list of foods to avoid, but told me that maybe in a couple of weeks, I could try a "stir-fry." Uh, I'm not Chinese. He also told me to start weaning myself off of the PPI at night. So, while I was able to sleep at night, I was still having other issues even though I was basically living off of rice, peas and broiled chicken breast. Trying to wean myself off the PPI at night wasn't working out as my heartburn symptoms returned when I didn't take it. I went to see him two months later to ask about an endoscopy. Instead, he admonished me for trying to wean myself off the medication in the evening even though he had told me to do it. When I reminded him of this fact (I wouldn't have tried it on my own accord), he waved his hand and started in on some story about his father. He then sent me away and told me to come see him after the holidays in January. This was in the middle of November. Shortly after seeing him, my nausea started to get worse and I vomited a couple of times. I started feeling a fullness in my abdomen. Despite all the literature I had read about acid reflux and how you should stop eating for the day a few hours before bed, if I didn't eat something in the evening I would sometimes develop a gnawing pain in my stomach and would end up having to eat something in the middle of the night. I was also planning to go to Mexico for Thanksgiving, so I was worried about leaving the country with these symptoms. I contacted his office and left a message. He called me back at the end of the day, but he clearly wasn't taking me seriously. When it became clear he was not interested in what I was experiencing, I got off the phone and contacted my GP. My GP recommended another GI (Note: This was a different GP from the one who had recommended Verhille). After waiting almost two months to meet with the new GI (she's quite popular because, as I learned, she's really good), I told her my story. When I finished, she immediately suggested that we perform an endoscopy. She scoped me the next day. The endoscopy revealed that I had gastritis. Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach. Look up the symptoms of gastritis and you will find: nausea, vomiting, fullness in the abdomen and gnawing pain that can either get worse or better with eating. These are the symptoms I had told Dr. Verhille I was experiencing before Thanksgiving. Once my GP got the endoscopy results, she immediately tested me for autoimmune gastritis because she knew that I had Graves' disease and autoimmune patients have a higher risk of acquiring another autoimmune disease. I tested positive. After my GP and my new GI conferred, they prescribed sucralfate to be taken four times a day in addition to taking the PPI twice a day. It's a medication that coats your stomach to protect it against inflammation and ulcers. Since starting to take the sucralfate before every meal and before bedtime, my nausea and vomiting seem to have gone away. I no longer have the fullness in my abdomen and the gnawing pain has disappeared. I almost feel normal again. What gets me angry about Dr. Verhille the most is that if he had performed the endoscopy earlier, he could have seen the gastritis, made the adjustment to my medication and saved me months of needless suffering. Quite frankly, he seems to have preconceived notions about people, to not listen to his patients and to not take into account patient history. Please, if you have an autoimmune condition and are suffering with a GI problem, do yourself a favor and find another doctor. read more

Wow, what can I say. Dr Verhille is amazing. I walked into Dr Verhille's office after an ER visit for Pancreatitis. He advised me it was acid related and my gallbladder did not need to come out. I had been battling acid reflux for years so he suggested I get an endoscopy just to play it safe. During the procedure he took a small biopsy. The results came back positive to H Pylori. I never would have known and been treated if he hadn't gone the extra mile. Thank you Dr. Verhille! read more

my biggest regret in 27 years of life on this earth was listening to dr. verhile. he kept me on a drug called protonix far longer than i should've been on it, effectively shutting down my stomach acid production. to make matters worse, I have a genetic mutation called MTFHR which causes my main detoxification pathway to no longer function as a result of this drug. I now have bacterial and fungal infections of my entire digestive tract, constant brain fog, hypoglycemic episodes daily, cannot eat anything other than meat and steamed vegetables, have spent a fortune on naturopathic doctors (the only people who actually seem to listen and understand gut issues) and have absolutely no quality of life. GI doctors are nothing more than a troupe of brainwashed mouthpieces for the pharmeceutical industry. if there is hell, they're all going there. run, don't walk, far away from this quack. read more

No one likes to see a gastroenterologist, and I had trepidations when I first went to see Dr. Verhille many years ago. I've now gone to him on three separate occasions, and I've had scopes up me and down me, if you know what I mean. This man is the most kind, patient, understanding doctor you could hope for. The last time I went to see him, a man and his wife came out of Dr. Verhille's office and made it a point to walk up to the receptionist and tell her that the doctor was "the best explainer ever born." I knew just what they meant. Highly, highly recommended. read more

I had Endoscopy performed by Dr. Verhille a few days ago. I have 2 auto immune condition, 1. Interstitial Cystitis 2, Crest Syndrome. Before the procedure he knew my auto immune conditions well and what to look out for during the test. He called me back as soon as the lab results were in and on his first call I wasn't home and he try to call again to inform me of my test results on the same day! I found him to be perfectly understanding toward people with auto immune conditions and very supportive, kind and considerate. Very happy with Dr. Verhille. My GP recommended him because I was experiencing major and constant stomach/digestive issues for two months after a bout of really bad food poisoning, and my initial tests with the GP came back negative. Dr. Verhille's office fit me in within a week, and the doctor saw me right at my scheduled appointment time! He talked with me for about 30 minutes discussing all the potential problems, tests and solutions. He also gave a bunch of samples that lasted a week and a half. I very much felt that he listened to all my concerns and didn't want to run unnecessary tests (but was happy to if I really wanted them for peace of mind). Minus one star because no one ever called with my results as promised, but when I called the office the receptionist had him call me back within an hour to explain the results and next steps. He was super patient, and spent about 10 minutes on the phone with me to answer all my questions, so he gets the star back. Very impressive. read more

He and his office staff are just fantastic, scheduled a upper-endoscopy right the way, toally worked with my schedule. And when I needed to double up my dosage for a prescription drug that my insurance won't cover, he we kind enoug to offer some samples to cover me over. Dr. Verhille is the most professional, responsive and caring doctor I've ever had. He tries to understand who is patient is, what he/she needs and work with them on that. He is very thorough and wants to get to the bottom of things and resolve them for his patients. He always is available on the same day you try to reach him and will spend a lot of time on the phone with his patients to address their questions and concerns. His assistant is fantastic- such a help, so responsive and even goes out of her way to help with insurance issues, providing samples and coupons to get expensive med prices down for the patients. I have never felt in such good hands with any other doctor before. I have an autoimmune disease and he has spent countless hours with me, walking me through various treatment options. I completely trust Dr. Verhille and would recommend him to anyone, especially those with GI issues. read more
