Dr. Ripper is very personable when you're with her. She is also excellent at doing a colonoscopy. I would consider returning to her when I need that procedure. However, where she falls down is at the follow up. She told me she would be in touch to report results and recommend any treatment follow up. I never heard from her. I emailed her and called her office about ten times and never received a reply from her. Her office person was always gracious and said she's make sure Dr. Ripper got my messages - but that's all she could do. I believe excellent practice goes beyond the doing of a procedure. I regret Dr. Ripper's lack of follow through. I would have liked to continue with her as my gastroenterologist, but can't stick with a doctor who won't stick with me. read more

I want to send rave reviews about Dr. Susan Ripper! She is lovely and personable and a pleasure to work with in what is a challenging procedure,( or at least the prep portion the day before.) The staff at SF Endoscopy were fantastic, friendly, and attentive. Great experience. The only feedback I can give for improvement is the challenge reaching Dr. Ripper and her office scheduler as it always goes to voicemail where you need to wait for a return call. Both of us at different times experienced this for scheduling our procedures. Dr. Ripper is very responsive on email or the Sutter App which might be the better option for communication since the office staff is hard to reach. Once you do reach Laurie in the office, she is delightful! read more

My experience has been a bit of a nightmare. The communication is by far the worst I have ever dealt with. I have been left with more unanswered questions than before even going into this process. I have emailed countless times just wanting to go over basic result and can't even get a response back(mind you, it's been months since my procedure). Half the time I try calling, no one answers or they say they'll call back/email back and absolutely nothing. I have called this office three times to book an appointment but the calls went straight to voicemail. Once the voicemail was full and the other two calls were never returned. This is not an acceptable way to run a practice. As a former patient of her mentor Jane Melnick I found this very disappointing. I found another doctor who actually has his phone answered. read more

I have been seeing Dr Ripper for about 4-5 years. She is incredibly sweet and caring. When I first saw her she promised me that she would find out why I was so sick, and that felt really good. I disagree with other reviews saying she is dismissive or doesn't follow through. She has always emailed me after appointments with information and sent me reminders. Unfortunately you need to be your own advocate in this f*cked up US health care system. Yes the front desk is annoying, and hard to get through. DO NOT go to her. She's nice and seems to care when I met her initially. I had stomach pains and even went to the ER on Saturday. My primary referred Dr. Ripper so went and saw her on Wednesday and she said let's do an upper endoscopy and a biopsy on Friday to see what was the problem. I was excited and said yes cause I was in so much pain. After the procedure she says to me because it's Friday we won't know the results till Monday due to the weekend. I said ok but I'm in a lot of pain and she said she would prescribe me something to deal with the pain till we get the biopsy results. Well nothing was called or emailed to my pharmacy on that day. I called her office and they said they would remind her before they close. Nothing was done. Whether it's her or the office it doesn't matter cause nothing was done. I called the office again on the same day and close to closing and the staff says oh she said shes been having trouble with internet connection that's why she didn't get the prescription in and now she's gone for the day. And the best part is she's now on VACATION!!!!Really? That's your excuse. This day and age there is no reason why u can't get a script into a pharmacy. There's internet everywhere there's still the fuckin phones where u press these little numbers to connect with someone. Cmon really?!!! Needless to say I didn't get pain meds from Dr. Ripper like she said she would call in for me. Luckily my primary helped me out over the weekend if it wasn't for him it would've been really bad. I make through the weekend and call the office on Monday for the results. Nope no results yet. I told the office that she said it would be today. They say even if it's today they wouldn't get it cause it goes straight to Dr. Ripper who's on VACATION!!!!! Office says she's on vacation and will text her. Of course I get nothing back. No call. No update. Nothing. Tuesday comes around. Nothing. Didn't hear back from Dr. Ripper. Didn't get anything for the pain. I ended up going to the ER again on Wednesday due to the pain. While I was in the ER I get a call from Dr. Ripper I don't even remember what we talked about cause I was so done with her and her fakeass. I couldn't even tell her off cause I was in so much pain. I even told the ER doctor she was the worst. Fuck her. Suffered through to Friday and finally get results back and started antibiotics. So the results took a week to get and not 3 days like Dr. Ripper said. Bottom line to me is the Doctors follow through. She didn't follow through with the prescription which tells me she don't care. She didn't follow through till I ended up in the ER again. I was just a cash cow to her. Let's do an upper endoscopy so I can make 2,000 bucks for 20 minutes of work so I can go on vacation. Doctors with no follow through is the worst and don't care so if u really care about urself family and friends. DO NOT RECOMMEND DR. RIPPER!!! Should be Dr. RIPOFF!!! Please read all the reviews here. My experience is consistent with others who say what a nice demeanor Dr. Ripper has, but how the relationship devolves into non-responsiveness. I'm sad to say that I've moved on, but I still can't get in contact with anyone in her office to have my medical records sent to my new doc. I went to see Dr. Ripper on the advice of my GP. I was ready to find a new gastroenterologist because my last one, while a good diagnostician, was just not a good listener, inpatient, and at times rude. I asked my GP who she sees and she said Dr. Melnick, but explained that she was retiring, however she'd heard good things about Dr. Ripper. That was enough to get my vote, so I made an appointment to meet Dr. Ripper. She was kind, patient, and listened. We made an appointment for a procedure and that went very well. I was quite happy. Then I had a flareup of my condition and I contacted her. She called me right back and gave me instructions, which I followed. After some time, the problem still wouldn't completely clear up, so I asked her to contact my insurance company and request that they approve a medication that I'd successfully taken in the past - so successfully in fact, that I never had any flareups of my condition. I'd been forced to go off of this med by this med by the insurance co. and the replacement med seemed to not be doing the trick. She talked about putting me on a steroidal medication, but that's the absolute last resort and we'd had this conversation a couple of times, so she should've had noted this. There are other options to explore before steroids. She balked at contacting the insurance company, but did agree to do it and followed through. They approved the now "non-formulary" medication. My condition cleared in 2 weeks, after about 6 weeks of problems! I called her to give her an update, but she never returned my calls - none of them and I left 3 or 4 messages. Now, for the reasons mentioned above, I've changed doctors again and she won't return my call so that I can get my medical records. Very unprofessional. read more

Or even comments I sent to her regarding my care, she replied immediately. She is upbeat, positive and I was confident the minute I met her that I had been lucky to find her. Dr. Ripper is a very kind, personable, and workable stomach specialist. When I first met her she let me tell the whole story about my bowels, without judgement and hesitation. It felt good to just speak with a personable expert. Then she prescribed a medication I never tried before and it has been working super well. What's even better is how workable, and how much support Dr Ripper has given me. The meds I take are expensive, and my insurance won't cover them until July (for reasons that are too complicated to explain here.) She has been helping me out by supplying me with free samples, which has saved me hundred of dollars. 5 star, highly recommended! read more

I was with Dr Melnick for years. I was so sad to leave her and begrudgingly moved on to her new protege, Dr Ripper. I love Dr Ripper. She is incredibly patient and responsive. She also is open-minded to therapies and outcomes... and when you live with chronic and often debilitating IBD, this is essential. She has also scoped me a number of times and is gentle in her demeanor and also quite skilled at it. There are not a lot of good GIs in SF, I would not hesitate to give Dr Ripper a try. I would not call this Dr. if you are truly sick or in need of assistance. I never write negative reviews. I can say that Dr. Ripper has a very pleasant demeanor. I was referred to Dr. Jane Melnick. She was retiring, as a result, she referred me to Dr. Ripper. The 1st time we met, she suggested that I schedule an expensive test. She suggested that perhaps the recurring issue might be "bad luck" or "coincidence". Upon the 3rd visit, she suggested another expensive test that took place in early summer. The office should seek approval prior to the test. I received a bill for the test a couple of weeks ago. I recently had yet another episode and I have been waiting since Friday morning at 10:15 a.m., for a return call. The person who referred me to Dr. Melnick, told me Dr. Ripper is on maternity leave. There is no mention of her leave on her voicemail. It saddens me to write this review. read more

I am 65 years old and have had colonoscopies since I turned 50. Dr. Ripper performed the most recent and found a large polyp which had been overlooked on my previous procedures due to it being at inaccessible 90 degree angle in the tract. To her credit she spent at least and hour trying to remove it. Subsequently Dr. Ripper referred me to a colleague specialist who removed it. Dr. Ripper's staff is unprofessional, rude, unethical, and crooks. If her medical skills are anything like her staff than I would never recommend her to anyone. You can tell a lot about a doctor by noting the staff they hire. If you want to be ripped off, yelled at, and have someone call you a liar than by all means have a colonoscopy done by her. read more

I think as a general purpose GI doctor she is fine. She is easy to talk to, listens and in the beginning responded to email very quickly. However, once it became apparent that my condition was not responding after several rounds of medication, she seemed to lose interest in me. I asked about a particular Rx and she said she had never heard of it being used for motility. But she asked a specialist and, sure enough, it is used and can be quite effective, so she was fine with me taking it. However, she would not prescribe it because she had never prescribed it before. That meant I had to see another specialist. As it turns out Dr. Ripper actually did not diagnose me entirely correctly and that is why I was not responding to her treatment protocol. To end it all, she has never responded to the last message I sent months ago. It started so well with her and I did gain some valuable information and symptom relief via low FODMAP foods. But it became quite a disappointment. read more

The communication in the is office is so subpar it is beyond me that they are even in practice. Utterly ridiculous. Their support staff is brash, rude and has even hung up on me when asking when I could expect to hear back from the doctor. I wrote emails and called 3+ times before hearing anything back (3 weeks later) after I had an extensive procedure done. Weeks went by! I will be writing The Medical Board of California to report their negligence and poor behavior but thought I would first do anyone else the favor of sparring the same mistreatment from this "Dr.'s office". read more
