No one answers the phone; I almost always have to call multiple times to get a response with everything from making an appointment to renewing a prescription. He's the SWAT doc. He has a medical degree (duh), a law degree, and he's part of San Mateo's SWAT team. This means he can shoot the perp, fix him up and then prosecute him in court. His family practice has over 2,000 patients through regular health insurance, and his lunch time is taken up by more patients from a concierge medicine program (think doctor retainer). Sure, he's sharp and quick and he's been right so far, but I don't always enjoy feeling like I'm being triaged on the battlefield or being cross examined rather than simply examined... Let me preface this review by saying I have seen Dr. Huie twice now and had considered him to be my PCP. Dr. Huie is very friendly and seems knowledgeable. If it was just about the doctor visits, I wouldn't have any problem with this office. FYI, my medical insurance covers quite a bit so I have not had any issues with costs like others. My problem is scheduling. Today was the last straw. I called at 2:30p on a Friday afternoon. According to the answering machine and his answering service, they are supposed to be in the office till 4p. Apparently, they decided to leave early. This is not the first time this has happened. On at least another occasion they had left for the day, and on a couple other occasions they were not back from lunch until closer to 2:30p (even though their office hours says lunch break from 12p to 2p). I also seem to remember once calling before 12p only to find they had left early. WTF! Based on the office hours (9-5 M-TH, 9-4 F), you are already only working 6 hours a day, 29 hours a week. And then you add minutes to your 2 hour lunch break and take off early frequently?? What is the point of having office hours if you don't even follow them? If I can't reach you, how can I be able to see you for an appointment? 1 star for that. 1 extra star only because Dr. Huie has been good when I was able to see him. read more

Yes he is a cop and a doctor, but being a doctor is his #1 priority! This is one of the only offices in San Mateo where you can call and either be seen that day or if you have a question, get a call back that day from the doctor! Also, the staff is very friendly and caring. They make you feel comfortable and treat you like family. They are very generous and try to help those with financial problems by giving them free medications and other things, too. I would highly recommend Dr. Huie to all of my friends and family. Yes, Mister X is correct about the number of patients Dr. Huie has, but what he failed to tell you was that this is actually a bit below the normal number of patients for the San Mateo area. And yes he does have a Concierge program which some patients pay extra top be a part of for after hours care and home visits, but it has never impacted his regular practice. You still receive the same level of care from him that you did before he began this program. I believe the Concierge program is a benefit to those who need it. What doctor do you know that makes house calls now a days? This is a great benefit to the elderly, those who travel a lot, and for people who have a more complicated medical issues. From what I understand it really is not that expensive anyway! All to often we think of our doctors as robots. They are people too and if you worked overtime or always went the extra mile at work with no reward, would you keep doing it? I went to Dr. Huie about 7 months postpartum with twins feeling like something was off. I was extremely tired, had trouble sleeping, was experiencing some anxiety, was loosing weight rapidly (had lost 68 pounds in 7 months), and felt like my thyroid was off or something wasn't right. It felt like I was depleted and all my nutrients were going to the babies. I didn't know what I needed, but I scheduled an appt with Dr. Huie as a new patient for a physical and asked for lab work wanting to know if I had any deficiencies. He did a standard lab and sent me the message via the app that everything looked normal. The end. A good doctor would've pointed me to a functional medicine doctor. It should've been obvious that I had imbalances that wouldn't come up on a standard lab. I needed hormone levels tested, vitamin D tested, likely should've tested gut health, etc. (things in a "Big 5 labs" type test). He wasn't proactive at all in helping me figure out what I needed. To give me a clean bill of health and tell me to come back in 2 years felt irresponsible. We all know now that chronic diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinson's, dementia, depression, anxiety, hashimotos, etc, are addressed through functional medicine. I had several red flags that he ignored. This week I asked if he had a metagenics practitioner code. This brand of vitamins is only available through a health practitioner (at their office or with a code online). He responded, "No sorry I do not." He made no attempt to point me in the right direction or even recommend another brand of vitamins that he supports. He literally sent the 5 words and that was it. I will obviously not be going back to Dr. Huie. Not only is he not helpful as a doctor, he made me feel like I was silly and annoying. Carrying twins and then caring for them afterward can wreck havoc on a women's system. It's a very high risk pregnancy and exponentially more work once they are born than having a single new born. There is no doubt I was chronically stressed, sleep deprived, and drained at probably very high levels. He didn't need to make me feel like I was annoying on top of it all. I would not recommend him. I think there's much better doctors out there who make patients feel heard and take the time to listen and help them. Sometimes we don't know what we don't know, and all he needed to do was tell me that what I was looking for was functional medicine. He could've recommended a peer or put in a referral for me. Instead, I've spent the last couple months doing my own research & am now waiting an additional 6 weeks for an appointment with the right type of doctor. read more

Dr. Huie isn't my primary doctor, but whenever I can't get an appointment for something urgent, Dr. Huie always seems to fit me in same day. He truly cares about his patients, listens well, and offers helpful suggestions when needed, as in my current case. Nice and courteous office staff as well. read more

Dr. Huie is PFD for me and my wife for 5 + years. He is a very good doctor and cured our illness very effectively. I saw complaints on no quick response in case of urgency. Well, that may caused by high work load on him, and the Menlo Medicare clinic system. Clinic is not set up to handle emergency cases like hospital dose. I noticed the front desk workers were always busy on phone or helping patients. I never expect I can get hold of any doctor there by a phone call any time. Dr. Huie has been my primary care physician for about 5 years. I have always appreciated his efficiency and ability to fit me with my relatively tough schedule. His offices are nice and the nurses have been helpful over the years in determining if my ailment is something I need to come in for at all. I highly recommend Dr. Huie. read more

I've been going to Dr. Huie for the past 3 years. I also referred my husband to him. My husband is really particular with new doctor's, but he said he would keep going to Dr. Huie until we find one just as good as him in San Mateo. He's very knowledgeable and actually listens when I have questions. I never had any problems with the front desk or billing. I guess my only problem is that he's no longer in San Mateo. At 55 years old, I have had many Dr's. over the years. Dr. Huie is the first one I trust completely. I have been a patient for 3.5 years now and see him several times yearly. Even though I do not participate in his concierge plan, I have never once felt rushed by him. He spends whatever time is necessary with me. He actually listens to what I have to say and solicits my input before making any decisions. Additionally, his staff, both Tina and Natasha, are the best there are! (EDIT JAN 8, 2009) - I feel I must rebut some of the recent negative reviews. First, I have several major medical problems and Dr. Huie handles them all expertly. He is more knowledgeable than any Dr. I have encountered in my 57+ years. As for his rates, I feel people are being unfair. I am on an OAP (Open Acess Plan), not HMO, yet my office visits are not subject to my annual deductible. I pay a simple $25 co-pay for my visits. I don't feel it fair for people to criticze the Dr. because their employers offer inferior benefits! Quite simply, there is not a more caring, more knowledgeable Dr, around. read more

I had not been feeling well for a few days. When I finally agreed with my wife that it was time to see Dr. Huie, he fit me in on the same day. It was a recurring problem and therefore easy to diagnosis. But he did blood tests and an x-ray to make sure it was not more complicated this time. I got two antibiotics and expected to feel better soon. After two days I was not as much better as I would have liked to have been. But I knew that Dr Huie had been careful not to miss anything. So I continued taking my medicine and now feel like a person again. Dr. Huie not only saw me quickly and took good care of me, but he also saved me a second trip to find a doctor on the week-end because I knew that he had been thorough. Been going to Dr.Huie from the time he started in San Mateo 15+years. He is very knowlegable and has a great no sugar coating attitude. He takes the time to do it right the first time and has referals and staff for any of the larger more involved problems. He got my cancer done and gone. His kidney specialist is top rated and his referals for diabetes are keeping me healthy. I call for an appointment and take what is available to my schedule. Never had a billing or staff problem and his nurses are outstanding. My last series of shots were TOTALLY without pain. Did not even feel them. If he wants to give back to the community with his effort and knowledge are we that narrow minded to whine about it like a spoiled brat. Personally when I go into my next gunfight, I want Dr. Huie on my side. He shoots straight and doesn't blink. read more

I see a lot of negative reviews of a really good doctor that are not deserved. He is thoughtful and sharp. Good bedside manner and his staff has always gotten back to me, would be nice if he called instead of staff but understand the system. Blame our health care system for the short time visits, same as all docs these days. Members of our family have been patients of Dr hugs for several years. We are now going to switch, as there are too many issues to ignore. When traveling abroad, due to a medical emergency it was imperative I receive info that my young adult son had certain recent vaccinations. I called and left messages for a week straight with no return calls......this was crucial information that was needed immediately due to an emergency. NO CALL. We had brought in a medical release of all information for all our family members so the parents could handle these issues, as well as bills, insurance questions....this had a 6 yr expiration date. This important doc. Has been lost, misplaced twice by the office and records. At an earlier date my family members scheduled two apts for vaccinations only, and was told they could see the nurse for this, no dr visit required. Instead Dr Hui saw them and we received a max allowable bill ,as the visit took longer than the allowed 10 minutes, as my family member asked a question about the vaccine ! $75 instead of the minimal nurse vaccination. I called to question this and was told it was done and no recourse. I'm still awaiting a return call after 5 days of calling every morning and leaving a message.....I now must go to the office in person and locate the source information myself! We have found that patient dialogue, length of office visits, and patient services is much bette at PAMF and are leaving Menlo Clinic after 30 years. read more
