Somebody got greedy. This doctor joined a new medical group called MDVIP starting 1/1/25. In order to continue seeing him, you would have to pay a membership fee of $2k+ a year. Yes, even if you have insurance and all the benefits in there are covered, this is a "membership fee". Wow! Never thought he'd make a decision like this. Time to say goodbye. read more

Dr.kuo I've been seeing you for years. Now i can't because i don't want to pay you 2500 a year x 4 for my whole family that sees you. Horse shit ! Your a great doctor, but this new vip crap is a stupid career move. Well now i need to find another doctor ,good luck read more

I can't bring myself to rate Dr. Kuo with only one star as others have done because he has always been such a fantastic doctor. However, I am simply devastated by his decision to join MDVIP, a service that costs $2400+ per patient per year outside of insurance in order to be able to see him going forward. It doesn't make financial sense for my husband and I to pay for this service as we usually only see Dr. Kuo a couple times per year at most, but I also find the concept of this service to be extremely amoral. Not only does it restrict his care to only be accessible to the wealthiest among us, it will inevitably place further burden on other doctors as people have to look elsewhere for care. The ironic thing is that everything this service claims to allow Dr. Kuo to provide to patients (more dedicated time and attention, better follow through, etc), are already the reasons I love seeing Dr. Kuo. He's truly been one of the only doctors I see that gives me plenty of time, asks great questions, always follows up, etc. It makes me really sad that he feels the need to turn to this service when he is already providing such an incredible level of care to his patients. It's just an incredible loss to all those who can't afford it or refuse to support this type of service. It's really gross that this service even exists. read more

Tommy is a terrific doctor but his decision to join MDVIP is a financial burden for his patients. Our family has been patients with him for over 35 years. To expect patients to pay an additional $2300 "membership fee" for basic medical care is another black eye for our medical care system. We are forced to find a new medical provider. SAD read more

Tommy Kuo is the best Last year , I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and still retained him as my family doctor. I have seen him for the past 25-30 years, pretty much as soon as he went into practice. Have never had any bad experiences with him and he goes out of his way to help you read more

I called to try to make an appt for my husband he needs a physical exam and I was told that they would call back which they didn't so I called again. A lady answered and told me that they're not accepting new patients which is fine. The tone of her voice just sounded so rude and she was rushing me to get off the phone. read more

I recently had my yearly physical in August of 2019. Unfortunately I was overweight and Dr. Kuo Recommended Enara Health and I was hesitant but I decided it was in my best interest to immerse myself in their plan. I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised I am at the success. I have lost 41 lbs since I started and learned a better way of eating so I never get back to that place again. Kevin N read more

I love Dr. Kuo! There are simply not enough superlatives to praise his excellent bedside manner, knowledge and drive. He truly is all a family physician should be. Dr. Kuo is of course never allowed to retire. If he chooses to do so, I will personally wheel him out of the retirement home and back into his office :) read more

Interesting that Dr. Kuo has so many positive reviews. When I was new to the area I chose Dr. Kuo based on his credentials. My first visit involved filling out a questionnaire. One of the questions was regarding stress levels. I put "somewhat". I mean, who doesn't have some level of stress in their lives? He dwelled on that one question for some reason and interrogated me on the source of the stress. Umm...I dunno...no particular thing...just in general. Not like I'm worried about it or it interferes with my daily life. Just like that he handed me over a prescription for Xanax. Thought it was odd that he met me 5 minutes ago and was already pushing anti-anxiety, habit-forming drugs on me. My second visit, I was the last patient of the day and you could tell he was itching to leave. I felt rushed and he even said, "now get outta here!" Pretty darn obnoxious. Also, I was mailed a letter containing another patient's information. None of my experiences were great, so I switched doctors shortly afterwards. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Kuo for about a decade now. I've since moved from Millbrae to Oakland and will continue to make the trek to see him when I need to. Yes, he is that good. Dr. Kuo is fantastic. His office staff are friendly and you get to know them, have conversations, it's all very familial. Almost everyone has been there for a while now, so you get to know faces. It all adds to the atmosphere. The absolute best things about this doctor are that he doesn't beat around the bush with you, makes you laugh, listens, sympathizes, and takes into account what you have to say. I have recommended him to anyone who has ever asked for a referral. read more

The only reason I am hesitant to give FIVE STARS to Dr. Kuo is that I'm afraid all of you Yelpers will rush off to make appointments with him and make it hard for me to get an appointment. He is FANTASTIC. His staff is nice. He always asks you to follow up with a phone call some time after your appointment. The best part is that he is willing to listen to your input with respect to treatment possibilities. He is NOT stodgy, he is NOT a curmudgeon and he doesn't wear a creepy white lab coat. read more

On the basis of the five original reviews (all of which were glowing) I decided to see Dr. Kuo. I just moved to San Mateo a year ago and finally got around to establishing a PCP. It helped that Dr. Kuo's office is really near my place. I have to agree with the original reviewers, Tommy is great. I'm sad to hear that deep s. had a bad experience with his office. I found Dr. Kou's staff to be very pleasant and efficient. Dr. K is also pleasant and efficient. He did a quick checkup, but it wasn't rushed at all. We chit-chatted and got to know each other a bit. What most impressed me was that he's got a computer in every exam room. He keeps electronic records, which is rare among family docs. So he should get an extra star for that. I can also say that the other patients in the waiting room seemed to be relaxed and comfortable with the office. Many of them appeared to be return patients since the receptionist knew them by name. It seems like this is a great family practice office. I highly recommend Dr. Kuo. read more

If you're looking for a new doctor then don't bother, this practice is not taking on any new patients at this time. My search continues! Gave 1 star as the receptionist wasn't very informative and sounded like she was in a hurry to get off the phone. read more

Dr. Kuo is pretty good. I've never had any other doctors except for Mark Beltran, another doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic and my pediatrician, so I don't have much to rate against. I'm something of a hypochondriac so I've seen a lot of him. He's recently implemented this system where you have to write down what issues you want him to address-- I have a wart on my elbow, my throat hurts, I want diet pills, I have a rash on my arm, etc, etc. I find this sort of inconvenient because sometimes I don't remember little things until the end of my visit. Granted, he let me add stuff to the stupid paper, but gosh, why bother? His office building is located across from St. Matthew's Episcopal, a few block away from Mills Hospital. While driving on El Camino north, the left turn onto Baywood Drive is sometimes tough- lots of traffic and nobody wants to stop! read more

Dr. Kuo is my first PCP and today was my first visit, so use this review with a grain of salt. Overall, I had an excellent experience. The wait was minimal and Dr. Kuo seemed very attentive, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. As pointed out by other reviewers (and what made me write this review) Dr. Kuo called me back the same day I called regarding a question. Definite brownie points. Tips: if you have several issues then you may want to make several appointments because he likes to delve in depth into each of your health concern. Some may see this as a downside but I understand that running a business you can only devote a limited amount of time to each patient. Also, this doctor definitely likes to cross his T's and dot his i's so be prepared to be sent for all kinds of lab work and/ or specialists. Again some may find this to be a burden but I always rather be safe than sorry. read more

Dr Kuo is the most attentive doctor I've ever encountered. He has been caring for my elderly mother and my disabled brother for years. He always calls me to inform me what's going on, and he is very accessible if I have questions. He is truly a family doctor from the days when you could really count on your doctor to know you and do what's best for you. I can't say enough good things about Dr Kuo! His staff is also excellent, and so helpful whenever I call. read more

My first physical in years. Yeah, yeah, typical guy, afraid of the doc with his rubber gloves. Bit the bullet, burnt some rubber and nailed an appointment and got hit by rogue platitudes. Very pleasant experience. Unlike Deep S I did not have any issues arranging times for my physical. Also, all of the physical got taken care of in one visit, no follow-up (and hence no second co-pay) required. Dr K was very friendly, chatty, helpful and made it a very relaxed (not at all embarrassing) event. I would definitely recommend him. I had some questions about something outside of Dr K's field and he promptly had his receptionists dig up some contact info for me. read more

Dr Kuo has been my family doctor for over 25 years. it doesn't get any better than Dr. Kuo. He has been professional, understanding, compassionate , and honest all with a sense of humor. You can tell he cares about people and enjoys what he does! He listens to his patients and he makes his patients feel comfortable in discussing health concerns. Truly, a gem! read more

Dr. Kuo is quite a character in both good and bad ways. He works hard and will do his best to determine what's wrong with you and treat you with meds. That's the thing, he's very gong-ho about giving you meds. Everytime I went to see him, he keeps insisting that I take meds and half of the time I actually throw the prescription away. Also, his waiting time can be quite long from 30 to 45 minutes. His front desk staff is ok, but his nurses are friendlier. Also, he doesn't spend that much time with you and the time that he did, I actually have to tell him that I still had more questions. read more

Dr. Kuo is the BEST! From personality to approachability to confidence in his profession. You are in the best of hands! Yes he googles sometimes - LET HIM! Get other insights, know exactly what it is thats in the vitamins ive been taking that may be causing my issues... DO WHATEVER to make sure my health is number one. KUO - you know you're the man! Thanks for always making me laugh through the shots and coughs. Shout out to his amazing office staff (Michelle has held my hand a few times through shots) and the SO SWEET NURSE who i feel horrible I forget her name, makes you feel so comfortable. Who needs a frilly office? People, its the doctors. there are germs. their are emotions. get over it to be able to see an amazing doctor. read more

Agree.. agree.. I've been through 3 doctors in the pass 3 years; one retired and the other two just do not show much interest. I like doctors that follow-up on their patients. Dr. Kuo is very thorough with his examinations and careful with his prescriptions. You can see that he is thinking hard when you describe your symptoms to him. He also explain what the follow-up action will be. read more

He is an Amazing doctor. Very caring. My wife and I have been seeing dr. Kuo for over 3 years now. Never had any complain, always on-time. He will also return your call the same day all the time which you wont see that all the time these days from other facilities. Also Marie in billing department is very helpful too. I definitely recommend them. read more

Thanks the Yelp reviews - I finally can find a trustful family doctor. He is a good listener. Treated the patients with professional manner - funny and easy going. The fist visit was pleasant - staffs were kind and helpful. No issues to make /or change appointments. One of the best doctor I have - highly recommend!! If I can give him more than 5 stars... I will do so....!!! . read more

Best doctor I have ever had . Takes time to explain things. Office staff is very pleasant too. They are usually busy but my appointments have been pretty much on time. Love him.! read more

My family has been a patient of Dr. Kuo's for over 15 years. He is a polished professional. He is personable and takes the time to get to know you and the history of why your there. He follows up on every lab test and is well connected with specialists. He always is up on the latest medical information and treatments. His staff is efficient and pleasant too! A Great Doctor! read more

He requested a blood test, and I did it. Since I haven't heard back from their office I assumed everything is fine, especially that I wasn't complaining from anything, it was just a routine checkup. Years went by and I had to change my insurance company and I got denied for the reason of preexisting condition !!! It was for that blood test that Dr. Kuo requested it, it showed something that was worrisome to the insurance company and this good doctor never bothered to call me to tell me about it not to mention treating me. That's shocking to know that your own doctor for many years learn that you have something serious to a certain point and not bother telling you about nor treating you. I would refrain from such a Doctor. read more

Dr Kuo is fantastic and saved my life. I was referred to a specialist and with all of the testing, a small cyst was discovered on my right kidney. Dr. Kuo said I had to go to the urologist to have it checked out and I didn't want to bother because I had other medical issues that were of more concern. He insisted. The urologist said to come back in 6 months for a recheck and I blew it off and didn't follow up. Dr. Kuo called me and told me again to go. The cyst had grown and surgery was indicated. Turned out to be renal cancer and was caught at stage 1 because of his follow through. He has been a great doctor for all sorts of issues and gives honest (sometimes painfully honest) answers to my questions. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Kuo for about 3 years now. Dr. Kuo is hands down the best family practitioner I have ever been too. His office staff is always nice and very flexible, and Dr. Kuo actually listens to his patients. You can actually have a conversation about what your medical concerns are and he is very open and engaging with you. I've had numerous doctors over the years that wouldn't come close to the level of service and care Dr. Kuo provides. read more

I love Dr. Kuo. I have been seeing him for at least 15 years if not more. He is very easy to talk to and he explains things to you very well. He is very upbeat and has a great personality. He is quick about returning your phone call and squeezing you in on the same day. I think that the person below who didn't like the "get out of her", just didn't get him. He did not say that to be rude or condesending. Very nice person and excellent physician. I highly recommend. read more

Great doctor, funny analogies. If you have migraines, ask him to explain migraines using the agent, the coach and the football player analogy. No problems scheduling appointments. Great follow-up on things like X-Rays. read more

He listens, and is fast and efficient and up-to-date and always learning new things himself, ably googling stuff if he isn't familiar with some new age treatments you've been trying yourself. read more

Dr. Kuo was my primary care physician for 10 years or perhaps more and he is how all doctors should be, which is sadly not the reality. He is a little goofy, but is very knowledgeable and genuinely cares about all his patients, which is very important. He has been working with the same staff for years and they are also very patient and flexible whenever I had an issue with scheduling, billing or coverage, etc. The other awesome thing about Dr. Kuo is that he takes the extra step to make you feel safe and taken care of. He's very busy, but whenever I would call regarding a question or concern, he would take the time out of his schedule to call me on his lunch break! I could keep going, but bottom line is, he's an amazing doctor and he has helped my family and I through some of the hardest times we've ever had and for that, I will always be grateful. read more

I called to book an appointment. Receptionist was rude and very unhelpful. It says to me that maybe they do not care about new patients or are not that interested. I told them I was no longer interested in seeing Dr. Kuo read more

My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Kuo for over 10 years and we are very happy with him. He has very good bedside manners and discusses and takes his time during a physical check up. He is candid about the prescriptions he makes and explains what is going on. Oftentimes he will refer on the website and show you information about the meds or the ailment. When I come down with something I go straight to him and feel assured he will give sound advice. If I leave him a message he always returns my call. All together he is a great family doctor read more

Reasonably punctual. Very personable with a sense of humour. Felt like I got good advice. And he mountain bikes too!

Dr. Kuo has always been accommodating and warm. His receptionist, Michelle, has been friendly and doesn't seem rushed to me. There are other office staff that I didn't interact with so when I read other reviews about how rushed the front desk is, I'm thinking they must have gotten someone else, while Michelle was on another errand. Ellie is the nurse and is very compassionate, she asks the right questions to genuinely help. As a team, Dr. Kuo and Ellie go out of their way to get questions answered. They are easy to talk to and I haven't had any problems getting an appointment. read more

I've seen Dr. Kuo for about 10 years now. He is very patient-oriented. You can get in to see him the same day if it is an urgent matter, and you don't have to wait weeks to get an appointment for routine matters and physicals. The amazing thing is that he ALWAYS returns phone calls the same day. He is very friendly and personable, very chatty and wants to know what is going on in your life. His knowledge of medicine is very comprehensive and he knows when to refer you to a specialist. He is also innovative and covers all the bases, Recently I had to be hospitalized at Mills Peninsula for a serious infection. Due to my symptoms he immediately sent me over to get an ultra sound for a blood clot. (A former colleague of mine went to another doctor with some similar symptoms. This other doctor sent him home and he died of a blood clot. If only he had seen Dr. Kuo he would be alive today.) Dr. Kuo and his staff arranged for my hospitalization and made sure that I got a private room--they wouldn't take no for an answer. While this isn't a complaint, he is so friendly that he will talk your ear off, and not necessarily about medical subjects but about something you mention that is going on in your life that interests him. This is just part of the fact that he is very friendly. But don't be afraid to interrupt him and get the conversation back on course. He is also relatively young (mid 40s), which means he can be your doctor for a long time and is not close to retirement age. His staff (Michelle, Ellie and Maurine are very friendly and helpful) and have been with him for years. It says a lot about a doctor if he can keep his staff for that long. read more

i didn't actually get to see this dood since his receptionist or person answering the phones is a complete biotch! i called two times inquiring about a physical and both times she was very rude and kurt about discussing appointment times plus he breaks his physicals up into two visits which means he's just milk'n the system for two co-pays...or is this standard procedure these days--not! aint gonna be my first time but, its the last time i'm gonna deal with these schmucks. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Kuo since the mid-nineties minus a few moves and need to go on Medi-cal. But I ALWAYS come back! He's extremely personable, funny and knowledgeable. Past reviewers have griped about how pharma-happy he WAS. Yes, samples would come on a silver platter. Reminder.... MD's were getting a kick back from drug companies..... HOWEVER.....over the last few years, he's mellowed out, to where medicine serves a purpose and will prescribe acupuncture or dietary changes before meds (if applicable). It's been very cool too to see his evolution as a doctor over years. Oh, and he can't retire. read more
