I discovered the Young Friends nights in 2024, and after trying a couple out that season, bought 2 passes for 2025 and again this season (2026), with the intent of taking friends to their first operas, just as had been done for me. I know at least one friend got her mom to come to a performance after tagging along to a show with me this year, so I feel that my strategy is working! Of course, this is Opera STL's greatness and strategy, too. The Young Friends are an awesome deal (dinner and bar and 10 bucks off the ticket price if you bundle just two shows!!), but even if you only go to one regular show, they make the evening so special and fun. They put a ton of effort into their seasons (which are basically only the (packed) month of June!) and to bring great music, theatrical, and art to everyone, at any level of opera entry point. The event is a little too long with a 2 hour and 30 minute run with a 20 minute intermission plus an extra 20 minute free champagne toast afterwards. The crowd was mainly older patrons but the opera is always encouraging young people to attend and even have discounts. They do offer desserts, coffee, and alcohol purchases before the show and during intermission. If you want to join in the event prior to the show, have a light picnic dinner before the show starts. That portion is separate from your ticket and eaten outside under a tent at a picnic table. The venue is mainly accessible but those accessible seats go fast as they are oddly extremely limited. They will ask to hold your walker, rollator, and transport chair to save space in the auditorium. Best to bring a cane if possible.

The golden pillars, high decorative ceiling and the whole architectural structure of the place is reminiscent to a classic opera house. I've only ever sat at the lower mezzanine close to the loge boxes. The seats are plush and comfortable and roomy enough to not feel like you're atop one another. They also have built in cup holders for your beverage. Their concession stands sell adult beverage and soft drinks or bottled water and popcorn. The prices are akin to that of other concert venues (e.g., a can of seltzer or beer for $13-14). They have canned wine but generally not a fan of wines in a can. I would imagine they would be more of the boxed wine quality but who knows. I've attended the Radiohead x Brahms concert here which was amazing and more recently, Tori Amos. Phenomenal venue for the concerts I've attended! The acoustic is excellent, nice stage production lighting, and the incline of the mezzanine seating are perfect that even if someone tall is in front of you, you will still get a good view of the stage. Their ushers are very helpful and the concession workers are very friendly. Basically, from the moment you come in, there's always someone helping you if you have issues locating your seats, the bathroom, etc. I need to check their event calendar more often and attend more shows here. The…read morestaff didn't make it clear until very late that we should not be on the side of the building lined up where there were hundreds and hundreds of people, but rather we should be on the front. But they held the start of the concert and we were able to get in before everything started. Inside the venue, it was nice. The bar staff was working really hard and they were very competent and the restrooms were large and things moved quickly. It's a lovely historic facility that was very enjoyable.

Of course the event was on one of the coldest night we experience this past Winter in STL. For fashion, I decided to ditch my bulky coat in the truck and take the lighter instead. Fortunately, I arrived early and was able to find street parking close by and didn't have to endure the bitter cold too long Design: The architectural designs are breathe taken! It's something about "antique designs that I am always fascinated with. Food: My friend & I decided to have dinner at the restaurant next door (don't remember the name). I wanted to grab a drink at the Fox, however didn't want to miss out on any of the play standing in long lines. Service: Everyone hustled to get in after going through the metal detector or being scanned by security. There were staff members present to guide you to your seat. Overall Experience: I truly enjoyed myself. I definitely will be back!

Well color me impressed…read more I am not a regular at the opera. To be honest, it's not my favorite thing to do. My wife loves it so I'm usually just along for the ride, and my hopes weren't very high for our night at the Union Avenue Opera. I'm happy to admit that my thoughts about this beautiful place were completely wrong. We showed up for La bohème and I realized I had actually been in a wedding before in the very same church -- the place is beautiful. Parking was free and extremely easy, and staff was on hand to assist. Once inside, we had plenty of help finding our way to our (comfortable! padded!) seats, and from what I can tell there wasn't a bad seat in the house. We were a little surprised that the entire show would be 2 hours and 40 minutes with intermissions and we had to actually leave early to make another commitment, so that was a bummer. Plan ahead because you'll probably be here for a while! Intermissions are long -- one was 20-25 minutes and the other was closer to 15. I can't say enough wonderful things about the staff, the set, the performers, and the venue. What a talented group of individuals. It was humbling to see such extreme talent right here in our city. Go get yourself some culture and enjoy the Union Avenue Opera!

The margarita was fire and by fire, I mean DELICIOUS! My seats were perfect, and even though I've been to The Muny several times, I was surprised to find out they have a restaurant! I also loved the live music playing before the show even started. The whole atmosphere was such a vibe! Definitely another great experience at The Muny, and I can't wait to come back for another show!

It's been a while since I have watched a show at the Muny. On this visit it was the classic…read moremusical, "South Pacific." The Muny is an outdoor theater in beautiful Forest Park. Parking can be a little crazy, but we were able to park in the lower and free parking lot. If you are disabled, you may want to get there extremely early or have someone drop you off. Even the closest disabled parking spot, it's still going to be a bit of a walk. There are lots of ramps and special disabled seating, if needed. Otherwise expect steps without a railing. The staff is very accommodating. There's really not a bad seat in the house, even the free seats are fairly good. The seats are quite close together so if you are a larger person, it's a tight fit if you have people on either side. The performance was incredibly professional and very good. The sound system and lighting were just right. I believe most shows start at 8 PM and have an intermission. When the shows are rather full, expect quite a wait to depart the area. It's definitely a must do in the Summer.

Definition of the unconscionable contract: A transaction in which only ONE side benefits isn't a legal contract in the eyes of the law, even if everything is written out on paper and both parties have signed the document. After meeting Michael on the phone he sent me such a contract. The one that benefitted ONLY himself. Because he has oodles of rules, a one sided contract and a fee of $1300.00, I called several hours before our first session and asked him if we could have one evaluation session. This would give me an education on what I was about to purchase and embark on. I offered to pay him over his pay rate to grant me this initial time with him. I believe that it is imperative to clique with your therapist, doctor, dentist and VOICE TEACHER. So here's where it gets good...... (phone call 2 hours prior to meeting) Me: Hi Michael. How are you? M: Busy! Me: Oh sorry. Do you have a minute? M: I guess so. Me: I had a few questions before coming in. First off, I wanted to begin right away with you so I chose tomorrow's time. However, I do have a conflict with the following week. Could we possibly meet on another day for this one session? (over a weeks notice). M: If you read the contract it says that I DO NOT DO MAKE UPS. You can switch with someone but NO MAKE UPS. Me: Ok. (This is stated in his contract however, since we were starting in 24 hours and he offered me several time slots, I thought I would ask for an exception). NO soup for me! Asking made him bristle. Well, the other thing I was wanting to know is if we could make today's first lesson be an evaluation to see how we clique and to give me a better idea of your class. I will pay you more to do so. M: I don't understand! What do you need to evaluate? We had a nice conversation on the phone and everything else is on line! It sounds like you want to evaluate ME! Me: (Um how dare I? But, ya). Well, I think that meeting in person allows us both the opportunity to know one another. I am a teacher and I clearly understand the importance of commitment on your end. I just want to see what I am buying on my end. M: I'll tell you what then.... Why don't you pay me $100 dollars and come "MEET" me. (Then a loooooong silence). Me: Ok. M: If I sound annoyed, it's because I AM! I am insulted! Me: I see that you are upset here. I don't want to upset you. I don't think we are a match. (Let me just say here that I have asked people with higher degrees and less ego for an initial consult. Like ANYONE in the medical field. They are happy to oblige. But....... this was MAESTRO! You don't question MAESTRO!) M: Ya. Neither do I. And... there ya have it folks! Never even sung a note. I'm an educator and I have never found arrogance to be beneficial to my students on any level. However, If you want to hone skill sets on how to navigate an arrogant, self over rated, braggadocious personality type, give his contract a sign. Of the two Landmark theaters, i vastly prefer this one. A) it's much closer and easier to get to B)…read moreusually not crowded -- for example I've never been turned away from a sold out show C) there's more for me to do/places I'd rather shop in the surrounding area. Back in the days of Moviepass (RIP), this was also one of theaters that consistently worked. I saw so many arthouse and documentary films T.T The only thing im not a huge fan of is center aisle seating. Just doesnt seem the best way to set a theater up.

Such a cute theater in the heart of St Louis! I enjoyed seeing the vintage movie posters they have…read moreon display and thought it was fun that almost all of them have some sort of a tie to St Louis. They also have wonderful doll displays, too! Many of the dolls relate to the Golden Age of Hollywood, which is so appropriate for a grand movie theater like this one. On your way in or out, you can take some time to stroll through town and check out the St Louis Walk of Fame for your own little taste of Hollywood in Missouri.
