This place is quite possibly the worst mechanic shop in Oakland. The owner is inconsistent with maintenance turnarounds and he only fixes the car enough to drive off the lot, just so you can bring it back to him in a day or two! The lot is always full of "unfinished projects" and they park cars that they are working on ,on the street. You have been warned...... Don't waste the time bringing your car here just because it's a local shop, they simply don't have it. This place is horrible! read more

Seeing more bad reviews, now I am sorry I wasn't more explicit about my original experience here. After service at this place I had more problems and so I took it to the mechanic in SF I had trusted for years before moving to the East Bay. He said my car looked like it had been sabotaged, presumably so that I would need to take it back in for more repairs. read more

This shop has held my now deceased moms car and is currently driving to across the bridge and collecting toll fees since August 2024 to current. The number listed goes straight to an SMS and he never calls back. The shop is always locked up and no one is ever there. My mother's car was stolen from this mechanic and no legal paperwork has been transferred to him for him to have her car and collecting toll fees. We want her car back and he needs to pay these fees. read more

This review is over two years old, but I've made it a mission to go back and leave reviews on all the places I've done business to keep others informed. Especially when the business/service was bad or predatory. This is by far the WORST shop in all of Oakland. I ignorantly let someone refer me here because I needed an oil change service, fluids topped off, and a brake light (bulb) for my then 2011 Mercedes Benz C300. I didn't want to pay dealership prices. So I go to this raggedy, dirty, hole in the wall of a business. This sorry peasant charged me $160 for the oil change. He never changed the filter, didn't top off my fluids and told me that I needed to go to the dealer for my brake light! What a sorry POS! The mobile mechanic that I ended up calling after this was the one who confirmed everything. He said:: Dan V's just took advantage of you and took your money. I was livid, but by the looks of the shop Dan V. has been struggling a long time. He really needed the money! Oh and the 5 star reviews are a bold face lie! This is for sure not even a 1 star shop! read more

Dan Auto- please do not take your car here for any type of services. Dan is very dishonest and takes advantage of female seniors. I assume since he has been in Oakland for many years, he was a reputable honest mechanic. Never again will I ever do service here. And honest truth I hope this establishment does not survive because you are very dishonest and a manipulator. read more

I have seen the owner scam sooo many people. He does good work, but a lot of the things he does are not necessary. I have seen him take parts off of other cars and put on a car that is being repaired and charge them for a new part. He then tells the other car owner that he found other issues with the car. He tells them that the part that he used in another car, needed to be replaced and that he removed it already. Be careful when getting repairs done there. In addition, he does not follow safety and disposal regulation. You've been warned! read more

Dan V Auto repair is the the most expert, fair-priced, and fast auto mechanic I have ever visited in 33 years of owning cars. And Dan V (i.e., "Dan the 5th") is a super friendly, honest, and straightforward guy, too. He doesn't BS you. I've been there on 4 separate occasions for various services on my Audi wagon and Dodge pickup, and had a great experience every time. And I always drive away feeling like I got a good deal on great service. I brought in my Dodge Dakota after a cracked head blew my engine, and Dan was able to diagnose, estimate, and find me a new (used) engine with low miles within 2 hours! After the engine was shipped here, he and his crew pulled my old engine, replaced every gasket on the replacement, had the replacement heads tested, and completed the whole job in under a week. And for exactly the price he said he would do it for. There's none of that BS about finding out you need to pay more for something or other here; the price he has quoted me is exactly what I was charged when he was done. And it's reasonable. My old truck runs like it's brand new now, all thanks to Dan. To me, his mission statement is encapsulated in what he told me when I asked him why he went through the trouble of replacing every single gasket on my replacement engine when he really didn't have to: "It's better for both of us. I'm guaranteeing the work, so I don't want you to come back later with a leak. For both our sakes, I just do it right the first time." And he does. Thanks, Dan! read more

Cruck.....................do not waste your money here he acted like my entire computer system on my vehicle was going to shut down if I didn't get my repairs done ASAP. I paid and lets just say 2 months late my car is doing the same thing , and I've had to take the car back to him 4x finally I just said forget it and I'm looking into ways to get y money back legally!!! Do not waste money here. read more

This business is basically a tiny parking lot that is overflowing with junk cars. They don't even have enough room to work on their cars and so often they work on their cars out on the street and will often park their cars overnight on random city/residential streets. Definitely sketchy...would not leave my car with them. read more

Dan gets A -O from me do not waste your money or time taking your vehicle to him. I brought in my 2014 Hyundai Sonata for a engine replacement. He replace the engine and told me my vehicle was ready. I picked up my vehicle and continued to drive home. My defrost did not work causing me to almost crash on the Carquinez bridge I brought my vehicle back to Dan took three weeks to repair my vehicle. About a week later I noticed my engine leaking. I brought the vehicle back to him. He fixed the issue within a week I drive off that same Day I get maybe about 15 minutes down the road and my vehicle breaks down again it overheated causing me to tow the vehicle back to his mechanic shop, he did not seal some gasket on my engine two days go by I receive a knock at my door and it's the police department advised me that my vehicle was stolen and involved in a shooting Dan never notified me about my vehicle, being stolen under his possession. Oakland PD recovered the vehicle and towed back to Dan shop. The ignition was busted and vehicle trashed, he promise me that he will fix the ignition. That way I won't have to go through my insurance company about three days go by I text him for status of my vehicle. He says It was stolen again for a second time he stated that they broke into his gate, and took the vehicle which I find hard to believe, I had to report the car stolen and report it to my insurance. Dan has failed to reply back to me or respond to my insurance company. He's a overall fraud do not take your car to him at all he is careless heartless. He didn't even apologize he did not even offer me a solution stay away from this mechanic shop he's no good he just wants your money. read more

Dan is reliable and honest. He's good at getting your car ready as quickly as possible.

This business parks cars on the streets in the surrounding neighborhood and will leave them there for days, sometimes weeks. Terrible business practice. read more

Dan is the best auto mechanic I have met. He not only fixed the issues on my Benz and further detect other relevant issues. He is honest and professional. I fully recommended. read more

I have been here a number of times over the years for my 2003 Toyota Matrix. They are always efficient with the work and are truthful about their prices. They always call and check to make sure you want specific work done. I feel that they are a quality business and I have recommended them to friends in the neighborhood. read more

I live by this auto shop, I had my car fixing there before. They didn't fix it and claiming that engine light on because it needs reset and will go off later. And never, I paid somewhere else had it fixed. Now they park customers cars on the street everywhere around the neighborhood. We have many car break-in around already. And last month when their mechanic driving the customer's back to store, he hit my neighbor' car badly. How can you entrust them? read more

I chose to try them because they were close to my house and I could bike home. They did normal repairs on my girlfriend's car and my truck and were very good. Lately my truck was stolen, recovered in bad shape. Dan said we should just tow it straight there. The truck was not driveable at all. Inside a week they had fixed the brakes, new Cat, taillights... All the while jumping through hoops with my insurance company... who ( Surprise!) paid up! read more

This is the most affordable and thorough mechanic I have ever been to. Just moved to the neighborhood and thought I'd try my luck with the local mechanic. He's only $80/hr in labor, thats the cheapest I've ever had. My last mechanic was $100! He's hilarious too, always crackin jokes and he just threw in an oil change w/no charge....plus, he showed me my old struts to let me see how badly they needed replacing. Easily 5 stars on this place :) I'll take my car here even if I don't live so close, you could go walk around the Mills campus if you need to leave it for a while, or go to World Ground Coffee mmmmm coffee.... read more

I am so thankful Dan is a quick walk from my house. Dan knows his stuff. I'm pretty hesitant to pay for repairs and every time he diagnoses my car I go and do some research and I always say God damnit he's dead on. I don't even check any more. Just let him do the work. Great shop and great guy. read more

Dan is so great! He has fixed my car on two different occasions and completed the job quickly and at a very reasonable price. Most recently, my car horn was out. I considered trying to fix it myself and had been trouble shooting it to the best of my ability. I really know nothing about fixing cars though. I brought it to Dan and explained what my thought process was and he offered to look at it and really figure out what the problem was. He fixed it in less than 2 hours and charged me less than what I thought I would have to spend in parts. I was so happy with the job he did that I had to give him a hug! He was a good sport about it, too. I would highly recommend him to all my friends. read more

have taken my cars for the l7 years starting when he was on Coolidge and MacArthur. He always does great work, not only great prices but really makes sure it is what you need. The first 3 times I went to him he didn't charge me anything . The first time he patched my flat. The second time I insisted there were no warranties left on my car. He spent 10 mins searching to find I could get the repair free at the dealer. ( I forgot what the 3rd thing was- so long ago!) He is the only one I go to for anything other than oil change. I have never witness an unhappy customer. The only reason I looked him up on yelp was to get his phone number. I saw he has a couple of 1 stars and I thought how can that be? !! Great work, great prices, and honest. He is as good as it gets. read more

I've been going to Dan for about a year. He was recommended by a friend. I find Dan to be probably the most honest and fair mechanic I've ever used. He recently sorted out my Jetta check engine light issue. According to the computer, it said "Change camshaft sensor" Dan did that and the check engine light still came on. Dan told me about the problem and didn't even charge me for the part and labor. It was just a simple computer reset issue. Another time, my car had a water leak. The other mechanic I used to use, told me I need a new water pump. Dan's diagnosis was to change the water bottle cap for $20. It fixed the problem...Dan knows how to keep your car on the road at a fair price and a very honest service. read more

If you aren't happy with the work, ask for Dan. He takes good care of his customers through quality work and service. He's helped me out MULTIPLE times when I couldn't afford work to be done. He's given me multiple options as to where I might get a part cheaper, and given me advice on how I can do things myself if money was too tight. Dan's Auto is HONEST with all their work. He's worked on my Subaru WRX, as well as my Dad's pickups. Rates are lower than most in the bay, and perform quality diagnostics, as well as repairs. Don't take my word for it though, if you have a mechanical problem with your vehicle, take it to Dans. read more

I brought my 2012 Ford in to repair a check engine light that had been on for more than a year. I was expecting a $400-600 repair to an electrical system. Instead they diagnosed the problem and recommended simply cleaning the part and repairing a broken wire, which cost $95. They said, try this before we install an expensive part. Drive it for a week and call us if the check engine light comes back on. It's been two weeks and the check engine light has stayed off. Thanks guys! read more

Dan's is REALLY an honest and great person to be in business with cars. I have been to him the past year with my 2005 Buick and he has fixed it and given me good advice. I am having a problem with it now and Dan is on holiday BUT I will not take it anywhere else. I will wait for him to open back up. That's how much I trust him with my car. Happy New Years in the making and if you have car challenges Dan is the man. read more

Excellent repair shop! My experience mirrors many of the other reviews that they do excellent work and have great customer service. They are very good at explaining things and have a pretty quick turnaround considering the number of customers they service. Highly recommend. read more

Dan is either incompetent or dishonest, but definitely a jerk. I brought in my Ford Ranger because of problems with the cooling system. He claimed to have fixed it but when the truck had steam coming out of the hood, I brought it back in for him to see his handiwork. He's very arrogant so I had to make sure he saw that the truck was overheating otherwise he wouldn't believe it. But he gave no apologies, no signs of humility. He made me feel like I was the jerk by reminding him of his incompetence or dishonesty. Hey pal, if you did the job right the first time, you wouldn't have to see me ever again. But that's for certain. I'm not setting foot in his shop again. I'm also baffled by the 5 stars he's getting here on Yelp. I had to double check the address and name to make sure I was reviewing the right place. read more

Dan's Auto Repair is amazing! I got a $5000 quote to fix multiple things on my Lincoln Navigator from the Ford Dealer and Dan got the work done for a fraction of that cost (less than 10%). I've taken my car there a few times now and I'm always very satisfied. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I was just here on the weekend and it turns out my car only needed power steering fluid so he didn't even charge me! I have nothing but nice things to say about Dan and his crew. He never pressures me to get unnecessary work done and is always upfront about the cost of a repair. I have even heard him tell customers when to take a job elsewhere for a better deal. He is 100% ethical and I love that! When my fuel pump started acting up and I wanted to replace it, he said that the part was too pricey and I should get as much life out of the current one as possible. He showed me tricks to keep it going and it is still working over a year later. He really treats every transaction like part of a long term relationship between you, him and your car. I can't understand why more Yelpers haven't spoken up for Dan. As a woman I never feel like he is talking down to me or taking advantage. I would recommend Dan with full confidence to anyone. Get to know him when you drop off your car because you will be beginning a long partnership! read more

Recently arrived in the area, I checked for a local auto repair shop - with a wary eye. Dan's blew me away. In and out in one day. Replaced Master Cylinder and signal relay, changed oil, and smiled as he charged $120 less than the estimate. Dan said that's the way we do it - since 1983. Wow. Fair. Honest, and then some. Thanks Dan read more

I almost don't want to post how great this place is. I grew up near it and now drive over 45 mins to have any work done needed on my car. When I tired to find somewhere closer to home for work needed, the bids came in almost TWICE as much as his. Honest. Dependable. read more

If you're looking for an honest auto mechanic in your neighborhood- Dan is the best in the business. Dan's been in this field for many years and is very good at what he does while delivering excellent customer service. He is very easy to talk to and if you catch him on a good day, he is always cracking out jokes! I completely trust Dan with all my car needs and I've wholeheartedly recommended him to all my friends and family. I've never encountered any bullshit here, and he keeps it real on what my car needs without trying to sell me unnecessary repairs. Thank you so much Dan! read more

Super friendly and helpful. I didn't know this place was here. Huzzah! A neighborhood gem!!!

Going into a new car repair place is always a gamble, imho. But I took a chance with these folks, and they might be one of the best auto shops where I have ever had a car worked on. They know what they are doing. Communication over the phone is sometimes some work for me, but it always turns out okay. I will call this my go-to SF Bay area repair place until further notice. Btw, I have a Subaru, and I think they have handled repairs on it well, and in a price range that is pretty typical for anywhere I have had my car worked on (mostly throughout southern California). read more
