Featured on TV's 'Junkyard Empire', you'd think that Damascus Motors would be all about classic car repair. You'd be wrong. A 1966 Mustang I purchased in May was vapor locking. I did some online research before taking the car to DM, and found that the first two fixes most frequently recommended were insulating the fuel lines and installing a ceramic buffer between the carb and the engine block. The car also seemed to be running hot, so perhaps a fan and/or upgraded radiator was needed? I shared all this info with DM. The car was promised in 2 weeks. Nearly 4 weeks later, I pick up the car...they installed an electric fan. That was it. Oh, plus a new battery and alternator, without consulting me (the battery was brand new and under warranty.) I was told it was good to go, no problem. The next day, it vapor locked. They did take it back in. Two days later, a young-sounding mechanic called me and said there were 'problems with the worn-out engine' and that was why it was stalling out, not vapor lock. I knew the engine rebuild had a 1000 miles on it. I called the original dealer some 100 miles away, he came and towed the car to his shop, installed a ceramic buffer WITHOUT my even mentioning it, and away I went, with no problems since. So Damascus Motors...(1) kept my car for nearly a month...(2) misdiagnosed the problem...(3) didn't seem to know the difference between a camshaft upgrade that needed some tweaks and a 'worn-out engine'...and (4) employs a mechanic that doesn't seem to know anything about a 1966 Mustang, but put him in charge of it. So I lost my car for a month, got stranded again, and paid $700 for a fan, battery, and alternator that I didn't need - plus if I would have left the car with them, a bunch of OTHER things he wanted to do to the car - when it needed the ceramic buffer I had suggested in the first place.
Jennifer at the desk is great, and perhaps their other mechanics are competent, but at least one of them is not. I can't recommend them. read more
