High end stereo system culture can certainly be intimidating but you don't have to be an expert or understand the science of how sound is literally transferred etc. to enjoy, your ears will tell you most if you just simply listen intently. Don Better Audio has a low-key approach to serving his clients. You come over his studio on the east side of Cleveland (bring a few of your favorite records, CDs, etc.). Have an idea of what you want to acquire and spend, in terms of budget and sound quality. Don will sit with you and consult on what he can offer you and then he will actually play for you various items (speakers, record players, amps, etc) which could serve your ears and music listening needs. Once you decide on what you want, Don will invoice you and order the equipment from his suppliers. I was so new and green I asked Don to bring the equipment to my home and set it all up for me (he did bring it over and set it all up in my home in about an hour's time once all the equipment I ordered was delivered to his store). Total time from committing to buy to having it all in my home was just over 1 week. In the world of high end audio systems, dropping over 6 figures is entirely possible if money is no object. Myself, I had a somewhat humble budget and I had been saving and waiting years to finally get my high end audio starter set. The hardest part of it all was finding someone I could trust who could show me the ropes and offer me hi fi stereo equipment that fit my budget with good bang for the buck. Don Better Audio did all that for me. All in I spent some $4.5k for my new high end sounding rig ( worth every penny as I plan on enjoying this for yrs to decades). Brought my music loving Dad over to hear it, he was blown away by the separation of instruments, voices, etc. whilst listening to the music on my new rig. Great excuse to have fellow music lovers over to enjoy tunes together. I never even knew this existed. I love the atmosphere created in a gray record store. This was no exception, and it was fantastic to see music history saved and presented in the way that hollow bone organizes their collection. My wife and I were able to score a couple albums and I'm excited to go back periodically and continue to add to my record collection. This is the closest final store to my house and I look forward to supporting their business for a quite a long time.

I stopped taking my guitars to others shops regionally, that where endorsed by nationally high level players for setup. Yea...they where good but... John's setup was always a step above. John has has been able to give me back semi-playable so-sos, to a silky smooth sweetheart that I have a hard time parting with, even it not top of the line. Now my grandsons and step-son have requested some of my guitars to learn on. I learned on poor quality stock setup. I wanted to quit until I felt instrument setup correctly...and then I was hooked. I want them to know what a good guitar setup feels like versus factory milktoast setup, so that they want to keep on playing and upgrading to their playing style/level. Wadsworth Music facilities that path with both the service and the inventory selection to upgrade when needed. They seem to have heavy support for the local high school band members as well, which I tend to hold dear. (Sry...bias from being HS band member in my days. Would love a high & tight rudimentary snare drum, or 3 valve B-flat marching baritone if I could still blow solo blues. Alas, those days gone. Low-energy guitars will have to suffice.)

I purchased a pair of certified pre-owned Wilson Sasha speakers from Paragon. They were…read moremeticulously packed and shipped out to my home. Richard came out for professional setup. He was extremely knowledgeable and took his time to achieve the best possible sound in my room. I was floored at how much better the speakers sounded after his consultation. Soundstage is much wider and the bass energy more controlled. Time alignment of highs was improved after he recommended the taller spikes for the upper module. Listening now with a glass of scotch and a big smile on my face.

The venerable brand that brought hippies the sound and soundtracks of their lives (possibly unknowingly) was in fact the driving force behind the Grateful Dead's famous "Wall of Sound." Paragon is a classic (as in 1980s heyday) high-end audio shop. At best a place to drop dukets and at worst, a total men's club (events with elegant scotch, bourbon, wine and cigars). Over the past 10-years or so I've seen the store expand and its fleet of delivery and service vehicles grow. Just spent $70K on a McIntosh home entertainment center? They'll install, balance and dial it in for you. I do not know if they have a service shop but I know from talking to techs in California that this brand seldom needs repairs. Our recent visit was a gathering of like-minded friends with a long history of audiophile (and record collecting) tendencies. We arrived in the last hour or so of their standard work day and were greeted immediately. Our primary interest was listening to the new McIntosh integrated hybrid amplifier ($3500.00) through their demo setups (several rooms with all their high-end brands and speakers). We also got to audition a number of top dollar headphones. One cool thing was they let us rock out (behind closed doors) to just about anything we wanted to hear! One tip, ask about any open boxed specials, factory refurbished deals and possible hookups for like new gear. In this expensive hobby there's always someone with 'upgradeitus' and those looking for low-hanging fruit can sometimes benefit.

The owner?/employee asked me some questions like what bands I collected and I told them. As I was looking around I noticed and heard two things. The prices were EXTREMELY high. I mean like expensive NYC or LA collectors prices high. Also I was eavesdropping on the conversation between main dude and employee behind the counter. After asking me what band I collected they proceeded to verbally trash the band I had mentioned. Odd way to want someone to come back. I will never set foot in this shop again.
