Friends, this is a wonderful Italian nugget of hole in the wall establishment! We were craving some good home made Italian pasta, and this place delivered a home run. Don't be fooled by the diner decor, this is a small family ran business, and if you are looking for fresh pasta - I mean, fresh is already an understatement. And if you want pasta, goodness, do you have a wonderful selection! The minute we arrived -right at the peak of dinner hour on Friday- this place was quickly filling up. We were very lucky to get one of the last tables because a line quickly formed right after us. It's really telling in itself when you have returning customers who knows the workers and store owner, and when the restaurant is filled to the brim, and customers of couples/ single/ family are lining up out the door willing to wait. This build-your-own pasta restaurant is absolutely brilliant. You are never restricted to a fixed dish, and you can come compiling a new dish of your own every time. At the recommendation of our server (I was overwhelmed with the wonderful different choices), I ordered the home made fresh Campanelle pasta with creamy salmon, capers, shallot sauce. Holy guacamole, it was absolutely delicious! No need for additional cheese - it was made to perfection. My boyfriend ordered the spinach penne with fresh homemade tomato sauce and a chicken Melanesia on the side. Super. We ended the meal with some delicious tiramisu. An amazing Italian restaurant. Dal Grano is the best Italian food that I've had in the DC area. After traveling in Italy, I'm definitely a pasta snob and Dal Grano is the only place that lives up to my expectations. The homemade pasta is cooked to al dente, so it's the perfect texture. I also loved the sauces and thought they were well-balanced and flavorful. We got the sausage, broccoli, and white sauce with fusilli and the seafood with red sauce and squid ink pasta. Both dishes were amazing and were not overly salty or greasy, like other Italian restaurants in the area. 100% will be going back here and it's my new go-to spot! read more

This is a great family restaurant, with generous portions, delicious homemade pasta, and a friendly atmosphere. Their desserts are excellent as well. It is not very big and it appeared they don't do reservations so on a weekend you may want to plan for some extra time; we went around 5 PM on Friday and it was fine. read more

Rudest staff in all of Northern Virginia works here. They refused to seat us because we were wearing sweats. When we finally seated ourselves they refused to wait on us and instead spent all their time on customers with designer handbags that came in after we did. Also we are a mixed race couple so God only knows if that played into their rudeness and bad attitudes. Eventually after no one helping us for a good thirty or forty minutes and being told that we had to wait (what the heck for, my money to turn greener than everyone else's?) we just left. Now because of Covid, they are empty and begging people to come in. There are many local businesses we have tried to support during this difficult time because we consider them part of our community. Not this place! They treated us like garbage, can't say I'm moved at all by their tough situation. I guess the designer handbag crowd will have to come to their rescue. read more

Stopped by this neighborhood pasta place on a weeknight and it was such a delight. They make their own pasta. There's only a couple of staff but the service was excellent. Menu is simple but ample. Pick your pasta, your sauce and any extra meat and voila. My wife ordered the radiator pasta with bolognese sauce - a tad watery but excellent. I ordered the campelleni (spelling?) with carbonara - excellent flavor, but the pasta itself was doughy and a tad underdone. I like my pasta al dente but this was two notches below that. For dessert we got the fruit tart and excellent as well. Will definitely be back. Lovely experience. read more

This is absolutely the best authentic Italian restaurant in Northern Virginia. There is another "best" place that is Italian but that is a pizzeria, so it needs to be ranked in the pizzeria category rather. Dal Grano is a cozy modern Italian eatery offering a really nice menu and they also always have some specials to enhance already delightful choices in the appetizers, soups, salads, main dishes, and desserts. Each dish is so simple yet creative and prepared fresh and just delicious. My family has eaten here maybe 20 times over the years. They make fresh pasta from dough all in house and they have every type. You choose the pasta you want and then the sauce with ingredients for your pasta. I love the seafood sauce there and the Bolognese, both I have with the bucatini pasta. Of course, it isn't offering only pasta. There are also some other Italian dishes including meat dishes. The restaurant staff are always the same friendly folks, and they, including the owner who is always there, really take care of each table with such welcoming ways like you are family invited to their house. Whenever you miss Italy, you can come here and get a small slice of Italy because of the feel and the food. Lastly, let me not forget, they also make delicious in-house gelato in different flavors that is a choice on the dessert menu. read more

I think a lot of people come here for a take out. But they offer a table service also. When customers come in, nobody acknowledges them. I saw several customers got upset and left. Great fusilli meat bolognese! The pasta was al dente and had a nice texture. Very flavorful sauce and I definitely would want a jar of the sauce. This pasta was similar to Al Volo however I do believe the prices are a little high. The Alfredo sauce could use a little more flavor though. I wish I could give 4.5 stars. Had to make a trip to Music & Arts this afternoon and decided to pick up fresh pasta and sauce to prepare at home for dinner. Fresh radiatore was great as was the bolognese. My only complaints were that the sauce still had some bay leaf pieces I had to fish out and was a tad heavy on the black pepper. But it was delicious and I appreciate the ability to pick up the ingredients to prepare at home so pasta doesn't get gummy on the ride home to Arlington and then with reheating. I was craving gelato as we were driving around after lunch, and this place was nearby, we have been here before for a meal, but this time my husband went in to get some gelato, he picked coconut and tiramisu gelato, portion sizes are tiny for the price $5. Even though they have very few ingredients in them, which I generally like, neither really tasted that great. My husband noticed that staff were talking amongst themselves, no hello, no thank you, and we kinda felt like they should be a little more grateful to get anyone walking through their door at this difficult time, when it's only pickup, and at least greet them. We ordered takeout from here and it was absolutely delicious; we ordered ahead of time and told them the pickup time, and it was perfect in terms of still being super fresh and hot by the time we arrived home. I ordered the Ravioli Braised Ribs stuffed pasta and it was delicious. Ravioli with braised ribs is one of my favorite dishes, so I've had it at a lot of different Italian restaurants, and this one was really good. Others had the Ravioli Mushrooms Pistachio and the Veggie Lasagna and also really enjoyed them. All of our plates were super clean by the time we were done ;-). Portion-wise, it's decent; not very big, but the dishes are quite filling. We will definitely be ordering from them again! read more

The ricotta cheese gnocchi are the pillows upon which dreams are created. If they made one of these the size of an actual pillow, I would sleep on it. Their other pasta is good too, but 90% of the time I order the gnocchi with pork sausage, broccoli and pecorino sauce. I would probably take a bath in this sauce. Worse Italian we've eaten outside of a cheap spot in Venice. We ordered my fave squid ink spaghetti (0/5), salmon paparadele (3/5), tiramisu (3/5), seafood risotto (3/5), trout (1/5), eggplant parmesan (1/5). All presented in ugly black boxes that were microwaved partially warm. Unpalatable is an understatement. If this is their standard, then anyone who rates this higher hasn't been in the same room as good pasta. I rarely have to apologize to my family for a meal, this time I did. The only thing my son liked was gnocchi that we had from Costco. I'm writing this review over my wife's protestation just so some other poor schmuck doesn't make the same mistake I did. The wasted $90 isn't what hurt the most, it was that it ruined our Saturday night dinner and a movie for our family. But when I called to inquire, the crew had changed, and the person I spoke with checked the table area, and found nothing. He promised to check with the crew, and to continue checking, and said he would call if they found it. Almost a week passed, and I was resigned to having lost my earring. Well, that left a bad taste in my mouth. Don't feel the need to eat here again, even after having been a loyal customer throughout this pandemic. Ordered lasagna over the phone and asked for extra sauce because last few times the lasagna has been dry. I mean dry to the bone, dry. No problems whatsoever on the phone ordering. Upon pick up, the lady made it a point (and very loudly state to me around others, think demeaning) how they don't normally put extra sauce but they added it anyway (you know, so kindhearted) and that they normally would charge me $6 but that they would let this slide. Well, then, I also made it a point to state that the lasagna the past few times upon reheating has been very dry which is why I feel the need to ask. (They really don't spoon any sauce over your piece of lasagna in take out orders. In this case, extra sauce just means 'some sauce, please'.) If they had stated this matter over the phone upon ordering, asking if I wanted extra sauce in a rinky dink, half-filled container for $6 more - rather than appearing so generous while verbally making a customer feel bad OUT LOUD - this would have been the more professional and courteous way of dealing with matters. Clearly my business was not appreciated, they felt the need to talk down to a loyal customer, so I plan to take my business elsewhere. I don't think others experience this level of service here from observation, so perhaps it was motivated by other reasons. The server who did this normally greets me with a general scowl, but all others seem fine. read more

It just doesn't get much better than this. The homemade pasta is really something special. The environment is really laid back and focused on the food which is amazing. We started with the insanely fresh carrot ginger soup. Then shared a short rib lasagna and a penne with bolognese. The sauces are screaming with truly unique flavors. Tangy with a mild kick, the lasagna sauce had a distinct douse of red wine that would make you think it was under-reduced but the consistency is perfect so you just enjoy the taste! We stumbled into this family owned neighborhood eatery on a late Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. The interior may have a diner, soda shop feel to it, but don't let that fool you. The big draw at Dal Grano is house made pasta. I love pasta and in most cases, a heaping plate of dry pasta hits the spot. But freshly made noodles are a whole another experience. The noodles are soft, light, delicate, and pairs incredibly well with creamy sauces. Fresh fettuccine with parmesan cream sauce, YES please! Sitting at the counter, we were surrounded by wonderful aromas wafting from the open kitchen- waffle cones being made fresh, sauces heating up. When the pasta arrived, hubs frowned as he is accustomed to ginormous Big Night (1996 classic) portions. I was fine with the portion size. But we both agreed that the quality was spot on. Overall, this neighborhood eatery is a gem. Not many places serve fresh pasta or take the time to make their own waffle cones. With each bite, you can tell the family really wants to do something different. We're happy we found this place by accident and look forward to trying more of their menu. read more
