I had Dakota Plumbing to my condo for two separate jobs. The first was to replace the pressure regulator and gate-type shutoff valve (the originals from 1983) with new fittings including a ball valve for the shutoff. I felt really bad for Brandon who had to work outside in the rain, and with several other contractors all descending on my place at once. He went right to work and about an hour and a half later, he was done. He did a great job and left no evidence of his presence other than the newly installed hardware. He didn't even complain about the rain, which was pretty heavy while he was working. I also wanted to relocate the gas pipe for my kitchen range from the high point on the wall where the original builders installed it to the correct place near the floor. Based on my first positive experience I decided to call Dakota Plumbing again. They don't do drywall repair, a fact that they CLEARLY communicated to me before they even took the job, Brandon (on a repeat visit) very carefully cut through the wall and put the pieces back in place which made the repair quick and easy. I was able to schedule both jobs in advance, and got a 100% accurate quote over the phone. Both times Brandon showed up right on time. They did ask if they could reschedule the second job due to a sudden rush of work, but that wasn't a problem because I didn't have an emergency. Justin is great. I had a very difficult problem where a piece of tile had slid down our shower drain from a previous remodel. It was wedged in the pipe about 6ft down the drain and caused our shower pan to back up with water whenever taking a shower. He was able to see the tile in the drain via his camera. I was fully prepared to either tear out part of a ceiling and a wall to get to it. Another option was to go through an outside wall which would require a lot of demo and repair. Justin tried various things for a couple of hours with no success. We were ready to go through the stucco wall but Justin thought about it for a bit and approached it a different way. He cut a small hole in the drywall of our little toilet room that backs up against the shower, cut into a vent pipe and went down the pipe with a big industrial size snake. He broke up that tile and flushed it out through the main drain. Problem solved. The only thing I have to repair is about a 12"x12" piece of drywall - pretty easy. He was on time, he cleaned everything up, we discussed various options and he approached the problem as if it were his own house - not wanting to cause damage to my ceilings, moulding, stucco, etc. I will definately be saving his business card - but hopefully I won't need to call him again. read more

I am in the middle of remodeling an upstairs bathroom. After removing all the old fixtures (vanity, toilet and tub), I determined that major plumbing modifications were needed. In short, a gas line, a drain vent pipe and the water lines were all encroaching into the space wheret the new shower was to be installed. I saw an ad for this merchant in the Church Bulletin, and hoping that such an affiliation would increase my chances of getting honest work, I called Dakota Plumbing, described the work needed to Justin and emailed photos to him. He would not give me a price for the job, but quoted me $135.00 per hour. My bad, but I thought that rate was for 2 people (Justin and Brandon), but only Brandon, the apprentice, showed up. The reason I called him an apprentice is because he made several cell phone calls to Justin for advise during the day. If all were completed perfectly, I probably would have let my concerns about the bill go. However, this is not the case! Ignoring the generally sloppy work that appears to be functional, there is one major issue that I uncovered. As I was getting ready to close up the walls for tiling, I doubled checked all the plumbing work and discovered that the coupling from the shower diverter to the shower head was never sealed. Not with solder, not as a sharkbite fitting or not as a propress joint. I pulled the line right out of the fitting with no effort. You can imagine the disaster that would have ensued had I not checked!! Now a quick comment on the bill As quoted, I was billed $135.00 per hour for 8 hours. Note that the 8 hours included a trip for Brandon to get more supplies and probably grab a bite to eat. This was about 1.5 hours and another 30 minutes for Brandon to write up the bill. If you could get $135.00 per hour for the standard 40 hour work week for 50 weeks a year, you would earn $270,000 .... WOW!! as an apprentice. I would also like to note that the bill included $194.00 for said supplies (about 25 fittings). My inspection of the breakdown raises some suspicion about the pricing. I will be going to Home Depot, later today to compare prices, and if warranted, I will update this report. Quick update: Plumbing supplies, as detailed on the bill, should have cost $106.02 plus tax. He was there 15 minutes and charged me $139 for a "service call." I asked him how much it would cost if I bought the toilets and he installed them. He said $200 each.
