I ordered a small dipped ice cream. It was so small. I pointed it out to 2 different employees and they both just looked at me. I said it was kid if small and the woman said, yes small. I have been going g there since it opened. There is less and less effort being made.

There's nothing better than rediscovering an old classic. Tonight was the boys' annual winter school concert, and we made our traditional stop with the boys after the show. At first when we showed up it was completely empty and we weren't sure if it was open, but with hours until 10PM, I considered it to be lucky that we didn't have to wait in a line (something this DQ is famous for). We stepped in, it was toasty warm in there, tables clean, and we were greeted by the super friendly staff. I got the salted caramel Blizzard. Kiddos ordered up chocolate dipped ice cream in a waffle cone. First of all, I scored a major win with the Blizzard. I didn't know what to expect, but it was worth every bite. Chunky caramel pieces mixed with smooth chocolate ice cream. I was impressed with the waffle cone holder contraption wrapped around the boys' cones to help with drips. They also served the cones with a spoon...not something I've seen at other Dairy Queens. Yep, this place knows how to deal with messy kiddos. Remember my mention of the lines? I kid you not, right after we sat down with our ice cream, being the only customers in the shop, families and teens started coming in and the lines began. Worried that the cold treat competition may have gotten to this place, I'm thrilled to know they are a-ok and serving up lots of iced treats and proud smiles. Note: Their sandwich items are baked in an oven. Also, they serve up Orange Julius drinks with recipes from the past. Bonus: Stop by this time of year in the evening, and you can enjoy a great view of the lights wrapped around the trees in Port Clinton.

This Dairy Queen is a summer time favorite. I usually come here in the after noon to grab my favorite Peanut Buster Parfait. Besides eating one of my favorite desserts what makes it even better is they have an outside seating area in the shade. It's nice to just watch what's going on in the downtown while you eat your dessert. While all Dairy Queens tend to be the same & have some of the most delicious sundaes & desserts this one stands out for a reason. It isn't just the desserts but it is also the location. Highland Park is a beautiful place & this Dairy Queen is located right in the middle of the downtown. For anyone who lives on the North Shore this is definitely worth the trip here. Overall the desserts are good, the staff was nice & the location is excellent. The outside seating is just the cherry on top to make this place my favorite Dairy Queen to go to.

Blue raspberry slushee blended with ice cream I have no idea what they call it but it's good

I got to try the signature raspberry chocolate chip, cherry chocolate chip & coconut. Coconut was my least favorite & the raspberry chocolate chip & cherry chocolate chip were incredible. I got a double scoop in a waffle cone & it's highly substantial, making up like half meal so go a bit hungry, not after a full dinner. The double scoop is something like $1.50 more vs a single scoop ($6) & a waffle cone is only $1 add on. Service was good but lines are behind (5-10 min wait) so don't try too many flavors & keep others waiting. Ambiance is a cute little shop & lots of people order it to go & walk around the cute downtown Northbrook instead of dinning in. Protip: They offer self serve free water at the end of checkout, so you canwash down your palette instead of ordering a drink & loading up on more calories. Also, there is an app offering an initial free ice cream, single scoop & you can do an upgrade for the price difference. Great addition to the area! I want yo try the cakes next time.

We ordered two Banana Splits (Choice of two ice creams and two toppings, split banana, whipped cream, pecans, and a cherry $9.25). They forgot the whip cream and pecans on both of our dishes. So that was disappointing as the whip cream is my favorite topping and pecans add a great crunch. So the dish felt incomplete and we were disappointed. On top of that the ice cream was super duper melted. We ate some there and it was soup so we had to bring it home and freeze it, then eat it the next day. Overall this place is expensive and I only like some of their flavors. They removed my family's family's favorite flavor of caramel macchiato - sad sad. We'll be back im sure because it's a convenient location.

We were seated promptly. The place is a little louder than I prefer; we had a 2 top booth in the rear of the resto that tempered the sound level a bit, but keep in mind it's not a "quiet place". The menu is straightforward; pizzas, pastas, proteins. We started with the arancini; they were great (and a large portion, to boot). I had the house made pasta with Bolognese, and she had the chicken piccata. Both dishes were wonderful; again, really large portions. Having just gotten home from an extended stay in the hospital, I struggled to put on shoes and retrieve it. Food was ice cold. Bag with calamari came sealed. Pizza box was not. After reheating the calamari was soggy and pizza pretty good. I would think delivery would have some sort of thermo bag to keep food warm. While I expect the pizza is better, all in all, Domino's delivers a better experience

Although the self-checkout area had a different staff each time I went, the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. In the most recent trip, a staff named Marty even came up to me to say "Hello, how are you?" This gesture really set the tone for a happy checkout. Right after Thanksgiving, I saw a sign on sweet potatoes advertising 29 cents a pound with digital coupon and the Mariano's loyalty card, which was an excellent deal.  So, I called my husband to clip the digital coupon online with the home computer while I was getting some sweet potatoes.  However, my husband could not find the coupon on Mariano's website.  I saw a staff working in the produce department who looked like a manager, named Matthew, and told him about the situation.  He found that the deal had just expired even though the sign was still posted.  He still graciously honored the discounted price. At self-checkout, a staff named Meredith gladly honored the price as well without needing to verify it with Matthew.  Although I was only saving about $2, this kind of trust, friendliness, and flexibility were great customer service and made me happy. During the same visit, I noticed that Mariano's had replaced all of their shopping carts with brand new plastic ones.  These new shopping carts were clean and sturdy, and very smooth and easy to maneuver. I like that Mariano's really works on enhancing customers' shopping experience.   Kudos to the Northbrook management and staff for doing such a great job.

Woodman's is great but farther away and doesn't have its own "counter" areas (meat, seafood, etc.). I return to Mariano's, and so it goes... They say there was a refurbishment here, which I slightly notice due to a mild layout change. Yay for that! The item selection is good and most items are pricier than they should be, if only by a just-perceptible amount. There are good deals, but other locations might be better. It is still a total mess regarding basic staffing. There is often ONE lane open outside of self-checkout, which not everyone wants to deal with. This was at 6:30pm, roughly, and it seems like more than one could be open? Even...two? They were out of paper bags, which is highly inconvenient, and you fit less into plastic bags, so you wind up paying more for more bags (it's a matter of cents, not a biggie, but a basic supply issue they keep facing over and over). The one register that was open had one person working there. He was a bit grumpy and the whole thing was inefficient, taking maybe 20 minutes altogether. They had no one helping him bag the items! This is common here. Is it so understaffed that they can't have someone scan and someone else bag? Very weird. Of course, I was given the option to bag, so I helped him a bit. I have done this at Aldi and that's part of the deal. But these are not Aldi prices, are they?
