I don't get why people treat this restaurant like it's some pinnacle of restaurant-ship (not a word but go with it pls). It's always seemed to me like average food for high prices that they know people here will pay. We went here with out-of-towners, including kids, and it was impossible to get our order taken for a while, maybe 20 minutes. Most restaurants prioritize getting kids fed earlier than adults, since they go to bed earlier. There was no sense of urgency here. Our waiter forgot our drinks and was nice but barely came over to see if we needed anything. Also, it is VERY LOUD. Prepare to ask "what??" over and over, or whatever your version of that is (pardon, say that again, etc.!). People at our table wanted chips with guacamole and salsa. The guacamole fit into a small salad dressing container (the tiny cups). This was barely a sharing amount, but we all got our thimble-ful. The server or kitchen messed up someone else's burger order, so she had to wait a while while everyone else ate. My salad was absolutely fine. It wasn't worth $20. Nothing in it was very interesting. The lettuce was fresh but poorly drained, so I got to have a watery mix of things with dressing. The dressing came in a small takeout container. This isn't fast food, and my badly drained, boring salad was $20. Give me a real dish :P read more

Cute little neighborhood cafe and bar walkable from Main Street in Highland Park It gets very busy for lunch, but is totally worth waiting for. They always have chili and baked onion soup in addition to a featured soup of the day. We enjoyed a meaty and tender corned beef sandwich and a bowl of chili with sides of cheese and onions. All the food was delicious. The wait staff was awesome and quick to fill up water and iced tea glasses. The owner even checked in with us and thanked us for coming in. read more

Norton's in Highland Park is easily my favorite bar in town! The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and familiar, making you feel like you're in an episode of Cheers. I had a dirty martini, and the pours here are generous--definitely a place that knows how to treat its customers right. Norton's is a Highland Park classic. It's a stepped-up bar vibe with super friendly staff and great service. The drinks are ALWAYS generous and they have daily drink specials, too. Their Paloma's are a must try. The Asian grilled chicken salad is really good. Their grilled shrimp is excellent and can be added to any salad. They also have good tacos and quesadillas. Their soup changes but my favorite is their cold gazpacho. It's super fresh and a must-try if available that day. The best thing about Norton's is the popcorn that they give you when you sit down. Great outdoor atmosphere on a side street local to lots of activities in downtown Highland Park. The food is passable, and the outdoor seating makes up for it. The hotdog appetizer is literally four tiny hotdogs and accompanied condiments. They aren't Chicago dog condiments, but you'll find mustard, onions, and relish available. If you're 12 or under, you may also request ketchup. We tried the fish and chips, which was delivered with McDonald's-style fries and a triangle-wedge shaped fish (likely a pre-formed patty). The oil needed to be changed in the fryer, so your mileage may vary. Also sampled was the salmon, which wasn't worth taking home (although we did, to be polite). For sure it's nothing fancy, but you can find some decent things if you aren't too discriminating about flavor and the like. The prices are kind of high for this type of thing. About as neighborhood of a bar as you can get around here. It doesn't have the fancy atmosphere like a lot of the other downtown restaurants. They do have the high prices though. Drinks are good. It's about $12 for some basic drinks, which is not good. We decided to not get any more than one. Each of us had the Impossible Burger. It's $15, which is a lot but not as expensive as this other place was. Came with choice of a side, and we got fries. We liked it, except for the price. It looked like a basic burger. This seemed a little too expensive for this as it wasn't like it was anything amazing for sure. Good old classic looking sports bar. It also has a patio. This is a painful review to write because I've always had amazing experiences at Nortons. We have been coming here every Saturday for supper for the last 4 months. We usually come in around 9:30 and have an amazing meal. We came in tonight and were informed the kitchen had closed by 9:30. Yep...on a Saturday night, holiday weekend, kitchen was closed very early. This was beyond disheartening and is unacceptable in my opinion. We drove 20 minutes to have a nice meal here and drove away disappointed and hungry. With all the other options in the HP area, I would much rather take my business elsewhere. read more

As we were eating lunch today, my daughter said: you have to give this place 5 stars! She was right. First of all, we were seated quickly and were offered both water and complementary popcorn right away. The service was great through the whole meal and everyone who stopped by the table to deliver food or clear off plates was super friendly. I had the soup of the day and the poutine. My daughter had a kid's cheeseburger and fruit. The fruit cup was the kind in the little plastic container, but that was a treat for her, so she was excited about it. The kids meal came with ice cream, but by the end of the meal, she was way too full. The restaurant interior is small, so I can see it getting busy/full, especially in the winter when they can't do outdoor seating. This is our favorite go-to spot for a meal before or after an event at Ravinia. It's a short stroll from remote parking lot "C," which is served by shuttle buses to/from the park. The owner and his staff are always super-friendly and accommodating. A neighborhood pub, Norton's is casual and laid back. The dining room/bar is small but they put tables with umbrellas on the front walk during the summer months. The kitchen sources topnotch local products including Eisenberg hot dogs and corned beef. In addition to these and requisite pub items such as burgers and deep fried stuff - done right, I might add - there are some nice surprises for health-conscious diners. The menu lists 7 different salads, and sandwiches include blackened salmon and Portobello veggie. We're still working our way through the menu, which offers remarkable variety, and everything we've tasted here has been a winner. On our most recent visit, we enjoyed chicken pot pie (very good, but Costco's version still reigns supreme) and the outstanding Winks burger stuffed with chopped green pepper and onion. Wow, it's been a few years since I've been to Norton's. I've tried many of their hearty and tasty burgers and large salads, but have you ever tried the french fries? My artist friend was in town working on a project at the Art Center of Highland Park--down the street from Norton's. She called me on a whim and suggested we meet up at Norton's at one of their outside tables. I had literally just eaten, but I jumped at the chance to have a friendly mask meet up (we took our masks off at the table). First and foremost, I'd like to comment on the outside seating. It was wonderful! It was nicely spread out from other tables, and on a very sunny and extremely perfect day, the way they had our table arranged kept us from getting too much sun. In fact, as I looked around, they seem to be very mindful of the sun. Any and all exposed tables were covered by an umbrella or situated in a way to protect their guests. To be polite, I ordered up a $5 basket of french fries. They were so good! They were perfectly cooked. Outstanding bar fries. They were lightly crispy on the outside and extremely flavorful. They had real Heinz ketchup and condiments on every table. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, and we were even greeted by the owner, Richie, who made his rounds to every single table. My friend had a chicken walnut salad and said it was absolutely amazing. You can see it in the photos. This restaurant is a staple in Highland Park and has been around for a very long time. It's a full service restaurant, and everything on the menu looks delicious. They only serve up a quality product (and experience). I'll be back for sure, especially after I'm fully vaccinated. As you walk around the downtown HP on Sunday evening, the streets are empty. Then turning onto Sheridan, you come upon Norton's and bam! That's where they are! Seemingly the entire HP population is here, taking up every square inch of this small cozy place. Despite the restaurant being busy, we are seated within seconds. We have water in front of us immediately and our server is asking for a drink order before you can say wow. We have been hearing that the specialty here are burgers, so that's what we ordered. One Winks and one Sheridan burger. They were good, but not the best burgers I have ever tasted. I do appreciated that they were done medium-rare, just like we ordered them. Overall, the lively atmosphere and prompt service made me such a fan that I gladly give them 4 stars. However, the food was just good, not great. read more

We have lived in the north shore for over 20 years and for some reason, have never eaten here before. My wife my son and I came in Saturday around noon to find the place was packed (always great to see). Still we were seated quickly. I thought the staff was super friendly and attentive. A neat bar/eatery with a very local feel to it. The decor is heavily sports themed with lots of random decorations for different types of beer. Service is friendly and fast, where I felt like I was a regular even on my visit visit to the restaurant. Prices are in line with other restaurants in downtown Highland Park and the menu has a surprisingly wide variety of options. These seem to be small twists on bar favorites such as burgers, pizza, fried foods, sandwiches, and comfort foods. What really stood out for me on the food was the dedication to creating bold flavors using high quality ingredients and having distinct textures to match. The attention to things such as caramelizing onions well, making fries crispy, evenly distributing ingredients on the pizza, maintaining a good shape on a hand packed burger, piling corned beef in a consistent manner, etc. show that this is restaurant that is serious about their food preparation. Haven't been here in well over 10 years. Not because of the food, but the service and I see based on reviews it hasn't changed. If it's busy and you don't know the owner, you're not going to get seated or if you, it'll be a while. We ordered takeout. No online ordering available, just have to call and then you pay when you pick up. I ordered the Norton Burger with cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms and it was cooked perfectly as ordered. Tastes fresh and grilled. Only thing is, the burger could use some seasoning, just hit that bad boy with some salt! The fries were nice and crispy. My family and I were driving in this area during lunch time, therefore, I checked my Yelp app for some of the nearest highly rated restaurants. We ended up here for the first time. My family of five, were greeted by one of the owners standing near the bar. We were seated immediately at a table for 5. I started with a Hornitos margarita on the rocks for $14. I was disappointed with my daily special of a bowl of clam chowder for $8. My tuna melt on the other hand was average at best for $12. We quickly realized many local regulars enjoy lunch here. Howie served our table well. My total bill was $120 less gratuities. I found this place to be a good average local restaurant for the locals.
