    Fruit tart
    Bridgett P.

This bakery is truly special! I stoped in to purchase a fruit tart for my wife's 35 birthday. I learned that whole tarts are only available by pre-order, but the owner was able to chat with the pastry chef and take my order to pick up a few hours later. I am so impressed by their customer service, and the beyond delicious tart! They have earned a loyal customer! Please check them out.

By Elizabeth Rubin Pastry Chef Karen Gumpel at Dagmar's Desserts in Old Saybrook pulls out all the stops with her gorgeous Three Layer Buttermilk Cake. The refreshing lemon and raspberry buttercream filling pairs perfectly with the light buttermilk cake adorned with vanilla buttercream. But this is much more than a cake, it's a centerpiece. Gumpel created a lush basket of pastel flowers that sings spring. Another lovely and popular confection is Dagmar's version of the "naked cake": a modern take on carrot cake with cream cheese frosting between each layer (and perhaps saving a few calories, too!). My favorite reason to stop by Dagmar's? The scrumptious Apple Strudel: a delicate pastry dusted with powdered sugar and filled with apples, sweet raisins, and walnuts for a bit of crunch. A slice and a cup of coffee was all the pick me up I needed after shopping in Old Saybrook. (Find the strudel at The Marketplace at Guilford Food Center, too). Owner Dagmar Ratensperger's store motto is "From Germany to the Shoreline". It's the most delicious journey you'll ever take without leaving home. www.dagmarsdesserts.com

Dagmar's is one of those places that never has let me down. Every time I stop in I remember the last time I was there and the new pastry I have never heard of that I tried and now I can't stop thinking about and then .... they don't have it! but wait what's that other thing over there? I'll get that one. OH MY... even better than the last? how do they do this??? a mecca of unique pastries that I am always excited to try the new things. Seriously delicious. Sometimes they have vegan options, or you can special order them - which is great if you are looking for that.

This is pure delicious! Sooooo tasty!

I have to preface this review by the fact that I had 1 thing. But this thing was A-Mazing! I didn't note down the name when I went but it was a praline moose, something or other. This small mound of goodness was to die for! Next time I vacation home I will go here as it left me wanting to try more!

Heavy cakes. Shared a coconut birthday cake. Dry, not enough coconut. Package mix is better. Not much selection in shop

Completely unique, it was a place where you could stop in for a light meal prepared by a world-class chef in a lovely historically significant building. With many regular customers returning weekly, Cocotte was a meeting place, a community, a casual yet special restaurant to meet old friends, to make new ones, and to enjoy a chat with Chef. The food was exceptional, prepared with an intolerance for anything less than the highest of standards, with an abiding and generous love for delicious cuisine. Nowhere else on the shoreline will one find tartiflette, escargot, and raclette together on the menu alongside delicious cocottes, omelettes, and perfect French salads, to be followed by a gorgeous selection of desserts. The finest French teas, lavender lemonade, robust New Orleans coffee, and gelato in flavors like blood orange or amaretto cherry. The chef and his wife sought to offer a place that was unique and special to the region, including traditional French pantry items, cook's tools, and other beautiful merchandise. Several customers were known to travel from afar for their almond croissants. Local residents will be hard-pressed to find such a place with its relaxed atmosphere, paying homage to its history, appreciating its original lovely antique architectural details, where the diner would never be rushed, in a world where most of our dining choices value the bottom line far more than relationships and a traditional dining experience. It is these very special characteristics that made Cocotte completely beloved and valued by its discerning and cultured clientele, who packed into the restaurant during its last weeks, wanting to experience Cocotte for one last time, express their appreciation, and to say goodbye. 323 Main Street, with so many lives and histories held within your time-worn, dignified and softly age-mellowed walls, surely the story of Cocotte will be one of your favorite memories.

I went with the Croque Cajun which was absolutely delicious. The sauce on the toast had so much flavor and it went perfectly with the shrimp. We also had to try their desserts. I found the imported and homeland cheese selection to be quite extensive. All of my favorites plus plus plus. Carson served me as I chose a few different cheese, bread and meat items with tastes along the way. I also met Christine who is the shop owner and had a great exchange with her. The store was well stocked with specialty foods, gift items and lots of holiday paper napkins. I went in for cheese knives and found a nice selection to choose from. There were still lots of table/kitchen/dining items even though it was right after we rang in the new year. I definitely be back for more!
