After a daytrip to the Sculpture Garden in Old Lyme with my husband, our 2 children and my mother who was visiting from Florida for a week we decided to grab some Ben and Jerrys ice cream from my local Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream Shop in Old Saybrook. My husband and mother sat outside while my children accompanied me to pick out their toppings. I did not notice anything posted about masks being mandatory and while waiting in line there was a group of 4-5 people all wearing masks being served, then 2 ladies behind them that did not have masks on. We socially distanced ourselves from the 2 unmasked ladies in front of us and assumed masks were optional like the rest of Connecticut businesses I was in conversation with my children about toppings when I heard MA'AM MA'AM you need to be wearing a mask to be in here. I was really confused because the 2 women in front of me who she was in the middle of serving were not wearing masks nor being asked to leave. When I said they are not wearing masks are you telling them they have to have masks on to? She just raised her voice more to say MA'AM you have to wear a mask in here its company policy as If she didn't hear my question at which point the unmasked lady being served turned to me and rolled her eyes as If I was being a nuisance. I apologized to my children and I stormed out beside myself. Left having to explain to my 5- and 8-year-old why those women in front of us didn't need to follow the same rules we were being asked to follow or be denied service. Is it because my family looked to ethic? Was it because I was heavily tattooed? Was it because she was having a bad day? Did she think I didn't belong in this neighborhood or pull up in a Mercedes? I went into the neighboring Starbucks for myself and watched those 2 unmasked ladies walk by laughing and enjoying their ice cream as my children stood watching confused and sad. What do you explain racism? Discrimination? White privileged? Mask shaming? Classism?!?! Don't we have enough to explain to our children. I would have happily respected company policy if the 2 women in front of me were asked to please mask themselves as well but to have a representative of this company break her neck to look passed the 2 UNMASKED ladies she was serving to very assertively inform me that company policy requires me to wear a mask if I wish to remain in the building as she serves and chats with the 2 unmasked ladies in front of me seems absolutely insane....... Shame on you. read more
