After reading the top comment (from 7 yrs ago??) we had to see if this place had "real" ice cream. That review must have inspired this shop to create a poster, hung on the wall, declaring their dairy concoctions are authentic and made fresh. On a beautiful summer night, there was a long line that moved swiftly with every lady working doing an efficient job in consolidating containers,scooping and blending, and checking people out. We ordered a mint chip on a cone (because the old review inspired), a chocolate shake (not ordered, but they have MALT, yum!), and the dairy free coconut raz. To me, a spoiled child of homemade ice cream, Ashley's was far too sweet, and not enough of the flavor promised (raspberry, where are you??). I did like the consistency and flavors offered, and the fact that they are open later than the place up at the nearby rotary. More of a 3.5 for flavor, but I will give the .5 for good service and great art! read more

Ashley's was voted CT's best for a reason! I used to love coming here when I lived in the area, and it's still wonderful a decade later. They don't open until noon, but it's a nice midday break and offer free water for visitors. When I mentioned my nut allergy, the staff automatically went to scoop from an untouched tub in the back. I got the regular (two scoops) of coffee Oreo, and while I probably prefer chocolate chunks, it was delicious! read more

Delicious ice cream & hot fudge that I'll bet is legendary... it was that-good! This was our first time here and we were very happy with our ice cream. I think it's important to note that where we live at home there are many dairy farms with 2 (used to be 3 prior to the shutdown) homemade ice cream places, so we can trusted to judge ice cream. :) The woman working in the store was super friendly. I happened to visit the restroom before leaving and it was spotless. There's a charming courtyard outside, with small stature and benches littered throughout. Definitely a nice stop. read more

We stopped into Ashley's after we ate dinner across the street at The Place. It's a small ice cream shop with some indoor and outdoor seating. There are limited flavors but some are creative- like coffee Oreo (which was delicious) and blueberry cobbler (which I didn't try but looked yummy). Staff is young, friendly and tag teamed to get ice cream for my group of 13 with ease. Prices are in line with most other shops in my area... maybe slightly higher. Waffle cones were good. Open late, decent service, fair price. Was looking for a dessert place and decided to stop in with my friend Sue. It was open late on a Wednesday night too. Parking was easy. Inside was basic. Just a number of tables to sit at. There were two young people working that night. Neither of them seemed all that excited or enthusiastic to be working there, but they got the job done. Just explain to exactly what you want and they will do it. No table service. You pay at the counter. The quality of the ice cream and the toppings was fine. Nothing special. SUPER DELICIOUS is how I would describe Ashley's! As a chef and foodie, I am more than selective with regard to food and especially ice cream. I typically purchase 1 scoop of ice cream from a new place, take 1 bite then throw the rest away and as my Mother used to say "why waste the calories if it is not good". Well, I cannot and will not throw Ashley's ice cream away after 1 bite. In fact I returned the next day for another LARGE serving. The butterfat is just right and well balanced with the delicious flavors they offer. Many lessor ice cream companies whip lots of air into their product to increase volume and sales ability. Ashley's doesn't sell air; just pure deliciousness. I add Ashley's to my 2 favorite ice cream places ever: the other is Berthillon in Paris, France. read more

This is a lovely ice cream shop with so many different flavors. My parents love this place, and they recommended this ice cream shop to me. I took my aunt here, and we both loved the flavors we chose. I got the coffee Oreo, which was not too sweet but had a great strong coffee flavor. My aunt got the raspberry sorbet, which was so refreshing and had the right amount of tartiness. The portions are very generous, and the staff is very friendly too. Never once have I endured such a rude interaction with a teenage girl who seemed to be making her co-workers even more uncomfortable than me surprisingly. I started this draft a while back, but I've returned since and tried the mocha oreo. It's a subtle, but important difference. Oooh, lala! ;) This place smells sugary and lovely, just like an ice cream parlor should. They have customers' crayon drawings all over the walls, which is really charming; some are very clever. My two flavor recommendations are pumpkin (seasonal, so get it while you can) and Nutella® Chip. However, if you are more of a standard flavor fan they also do vanilla and chocolate very well. Due to COVID restrictions they are strictly take out but you can still enter the store to order from the ice cream case. There is plenty of outdoor seating to offer (benches) and rock walls to rest on. When you're in the area and are craving ice cream Ashley's will not disappoint. read more

My lovely fiancé and I decided to stop by for a treat after dinner with our friend from out of state. We were greeted with nothing more then a bunch of eye rolling brats who were visibly annoyed with us just being there and ordering ice cream. This is my first yelp review and I have been to many of places with lousy service but this was by far the worst and I decided to create a yelp account. I can look past the over priced mediocre ice cream but can't get past the idiots that work there. Direct quote from the ice cream scooper when I tried to order a sundae as follows... "ummm I'm only taking milkshake orders," then stormed off . Nothing was more hilarious then when we tried to pay and the ice cream scooper just stared at us and rolled her eyes, then walked away! We actually laughed at this second ice cream scooper due to the absurdity of the whole situation. P.S they don't even offer peanut butter sauce like the great ice cream places. Arrived one minute before they were closing. One customer was ordering and another two were paying. We were told that they were closing and couldn't be served. There was nobody behind us. I get that it was right at closing time but it wouldn't have hurt to serve two more customers. This is the Madison branch of the Connecticut ice-cream icon named after a performing dog. The ice-cream is identical to the other branches (New Haven, Hamden, Branford, Guilford), and, as others have yelped, is best in the area. Of all the branches, Madison offers the best outdoor seating. Among planted trees, there are benches and brick walls to sit on if it's a nice day. Inside there are about 10 tables and the Ashley's standard fan-artwork and Frisbee adorned walls. Whether this branch or one of the others, Ashley's is not to be missed. My suggested order: a simple cup or cone. Best to savor the ice-cream; toppings get in the way. read more
