The sandwiches are top-tier: fresh, crusty bread packed with quality Italian meats and cheeses sliced right in front of you, all toasted up hot and fresh. Finding authentic, high-quality food at these prices anywhere in central Amsterdam is almost unheard of. Beyond the panini, their calzones, cannoli, and tiramisu are just as good. Just a heads-up: it's strictly a grab-and-go setup, and they mostly take cash or local debit cards (standard credit cards can be hit-or-miss).

Since 1945. Van Dobben is most famous for croquettes, but also for its typical Amsterdam "broodje"…read moresandwiches. It's the most classic Dutch sandwich bar I have found in town, and almost everything is homemade. I think this is my favorite classic Dutch "fast food" restaurant in Amsterdam, mainly because my mother grew up in Holland and she always used to talk about eating steak tartare broodje with hard boiled egg, onion and mayonnaise in the 1950s. Their homemade steak tartare broodje is outstanding. The homemade Dutch pea soup is only available during cold months and it's also fabulous. In summer they have a mushroom soup, but I haven't tried it yet. If you wanna be really Dutch, order a glass of buttermilk with your broodjie. They also have regular milk and lots of soft drinks. It's just classic and delcious traditional Dutch food; really good and so fresh and you can watch it being made. Everyone that works here is also so nice. Try the kipsaté croquette which tastes like a Thai saté stick. Don't forget the yellow mustard. The server may tell you it makes it taste even better. So fun to sit at the bar counter inside, and they do have a few tables outside for sunny days. I love the decor, the funny expressions about croquettes on the tiles, and the super 1950s black-and-white photos from the restaurant on the walls. This is such a wonderful place and every time I come to Amsterdam I make a pilgrimage here. It's also on a really nice and slightly diagonal street, right in the city center, that still has its old charm. They have the full menu and also a small "classics" menu; one thing I've never tried, but would like to next time, is the curry chicken salad.

GRILLED CHEESE PARADISE…read more.. This is one of these hard to find eateries in Amsterdam. We are on a food tour that brought us here and loved it. It is located below ground level under a residential apartment building. Very small restaurant with twelve tables constructed of light pine wood. The main dish here is the grilled cheese sandwich which is made of melted guida cheese with thick corn bread. Absolutely loved that the origins of the sandwich are from Holland.

I'm going to challenge myself and try to describe to you my experience at Stadspaleis…read more Here are the facts: -I got the City Burger with mozzarella cheese and a cup of soy latte. -My two friends and I sat outside. -The price for each person was approximately 12 Euros. Those were the facts, easy enough. The real challenge, however, is using words to convey the exact emotions and feelings that I had while enjoying my burger at Stadspaleis. Sometimes words fail us. Sometimes, we just can't find a right combination of words to describe a certain experience. In my case, I'm having trouble using words to illustrate my experience at Stadspaleis. Should I begin with a detailed description of the burger? I could write about how a thick and soft layer of mozzarella sits steadily on top of a charred patty that was cooked just a little bit too long. And how the runny sesame-like sauce spills on to my tongue and blends with the tiny chunks of meat and the soft remains of a chewed up sesame bun. Or should I just tell you it was a delicious burger and let your imagination explode. Again, I don't think I can effectively use words to convey my exact experience at Stadspaleis. I can use all the similes, metaphors, hyperboles, juxtapositions, allegories, allusions, and imageries and I would still fail. I can't use words to put the burger in your mouth. I can't use words to make you feel the relaxing atmosphere that surrounds Stadspaleis. And I can't use words to make you feel the love of their hospitality. I can try. Or you can go experience it for yourself.

We wandered the streets for a while until finally seeing a bright yellow sign down the street that said "Hot Crispy Bacon" - we were sold. The man behind the counter didn't speak great English and we didn't know exactly how to order, but we told him we wanted some bacon and he understood perfectly! We are not picky people at all, so we were totally fine with how he selected our bread, meat (in addition to the bacon), cheese, and sauce to make two absolutuely delicious sandwiches for us. What made it even better was that the total cost for both of us was less then 10 euros - totally worth it. If we ever find ourselves in Amsterdam again, we will be coming back!

My wife located this place and we met up with our daughter there after she dropped off her rented bike nearby. If you walk to the far end of the park from the Rijksmuseum and turn left at the street that borders the park there, the restaurant is about 2 blocks along there. You enter into a small waiting area and proceed between 2 counters. The best way I can describe the process is that it was like an ice cream shop in the U.S. They had glass displays showing what was available for meals - varieties of pasta, etc. You could select from those, or I think they had salads also. You place your order and then grab a table. A server will bring the food out when it is ready. Seating was a bit limited, so there could be a wait for a table. We arrived just before they got busy, though. They have about 5 or 6 small tables on the ground floor. If those are full, a fallback option is to ascend the spiral stairs up to a low-ceilinged loft. This is where we ate. The chairs here were fine but the tables were quite small - almost like a high coffee table. It wasn't hard to eat off these, just a bit different than usual. Also, if you are much over 6 feet tall, the ceilings will require caution. They can probably accommodate another 3 - 4 small parties up there. Everyone liked their food, which definitely had that 'prepared fresh' vibe. I got the pasta and had no trouble finishing it. I'd definitely consider eating here again were I back in the area.
