Cheese puffs were perfect, hot and crispy, exactly what I was craving. Soup broth was warm and comforting, full of flavor. Excellent service, quick, friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere is warm and intimate, all booth seating.

I went to D Wok Express one night and I didn't like my first impression - not a single Chinese character on the menu nor on the wall; nada, zilch, not even a Chinese painting. I thought 'uh oh'. After stripping out my usual expectations in Chinese food, this was just a-OK for me. My first visit, when I was about to order, their phone rang. That was a long phone order. The clock was ticking. Then, I asked another lady for help, the phone rang again. At this time, I was there nearly 15 minutes and still not ordered yet. After she hung up the phone, she told me that I need to wait 10-15 minutes for the food, "this is not a fast food restaurant. Everything has to be made to order." I replied, "Don't worry about it. I'll come back tomorrow". So, I kept my word and went back the next day. I had to make sure I had enough time to dine in. I immediately ordered vegetable chopsuey, wonton soup and a hot tea. The tea came in a small teapot and a coffee cup with distorted Chinese printing. The soup was served in a cereal bowl with fried wonton strips in a cafeteria-style soup bowl. The rice was in another cafeteria-style soup bowl. I was looking at the mixed matched utensils and melamine dinnerware on my table. I thought, "oh boy, this would not be the place to have your first date." The Food - * Tea was bland because the lukewarm water couldn't brew the tea bag. *Failed* * Wonton was good and broth tasted just right. However, I don't know what the wonton strips were for. I almost sprinkle some sugar on top to make myself a desert. * Steamed rice was fluffy and aromatic. *Excellent* * Chopsuey was the challenge part - Broccoli was so hot and it burned my tongue. Other vegetables were less hot. Celery had pineapple-flavored sweetness on it. Sugar peas were crunchy. Flavor on the sauce was pretty good, without any traces of MSG. It was nice to chat with staff about some interesting demographic info. Their clientele is mostly Spanish-speaking customers and rarely seeing Asians. She was bragging about their best selling point - the volume. I complimented on the photos of the "all day lunch specials" being a good value. For only $6.99, it comes with entree, fried rice, egg roll and a canned soda. It's discounted at $6.49, if you ordered by 4 pm.

Chicken with veg but too much sauce

I tried this place because I wanted a particular dish that the other Chinese restaurant didn't have on Gessner. I ordered chicken and vegetables and it came with a spring roll and for $1.00 extra egg drop soup. It was good but my only beef was the fact the container was over spilling with sauce. It was so bad it was at the bottom of the bag. The service was fast and quick but next time I don't want a bag soaked with sauce. If I want to try this place again I will just another dish that isn't a mess.

a spoon in a bowl of soup

I ordered on yesterday. My family orders from here all the time! Was very disappointed on yesterday though. My husband works the night shift. I ordered a wonton soup. He took it to work for his lunch. Found a roach in the soup. I have a picture of it! And I'm thinking of calling the health department! Just sickening!!! I need my money back or I'm calling!

Exactly 7 shrimp and an overload of broccoli...smh.

They're probably the best tasting delivery Chinese food around the area where I stay. However, they tend to have issues with delivery like, correctly inputting credit card information then not allowing you to have delivery again as if it was your fault. Today it was not delivering the spring rolls with the orders. Then, after calling immediately to ask about the missing food and being give the option to either have money refunded or food delivered again and choosing the latter, being told that it will take another 30-45mins for 2 damn spring rolls. Like really? I live less than 5miles drone here. Can't someone just walk them over? Geeze Also, they basically give all the vegetables and barely protein when you order things like shrimp and broccoli like I did.

Lunch special every day, all day!
    Becky K.

I'm covering for my friend's receptionist for a couple of weeks while I find some full-time work, so I get to explore and discover new lunch places in the Memorial area for the time being. I wanted to find a close, quick, delicious and affordable lunch option. And since I was eating alone (which is pretty rare), I wanted something unhealthy :) I Googled a few places close by and saw that this place was not only Americanized Chinese (I love!), but fit the criteria that I wanted. So off I went! 3 minutes later, I arrive at a strange place with pictures of their food posted everywhere. I walked in and immediately saw a To-Go window for quick pick-up for customers who called in. I sat down at one of the 8 tables inside and waited for someone to take my order. BTW, their lunch special runs all day, every day! Just pay a little more if it's after 4:00 pm. So, the lady who took my order (who was also running the cash register, answering the phones and giving the pick-up customers their food) was pretty busy, so I had to wait a few minutes before being able to place an order. I decided to go with the lemon chicken, to which the waitress said, "You mean sweet and sour?" (they're actually next to each other on the same line in the menu) "No... lemon chicken?" "Oh okay... we can do that for you." I was kinda confused because she made it seem like an off-menu item when it was right there. She quickly left and attended to other things. When I got my food, my jaw dropped. A HUGE platter of freshly-fried chicken. I literally only ate half and took the rest to go. I was kinda disappointed about the fried rice... rice, soy sauce, and maybe one bit of egg? But it wasn't the worst I've had. The chicken was freshly fried, juicy with a perfectly thin layer of batter that stayed crunchy throughout the entire meal. I could've done without the artificially-sweet lemony sauce. Maybe I should've ordered the sweet and sour after all. The lunch special also came with a fried spring roll, which was delicious and also fresh. All of that food, plus a soda for $6.49. Really, not a bad deal at all. And I didn't realize this until after the menu was taken away, but if you add $.50, I guess you can also get soup and/or a wonton? Something like that. Since there was only one lady doing everything, she was pretty busy and distracted, and was short on a few occasions. But I don't really expect to be treated like a queen at a hole in the wall, especially one owned by Asians. All the criteria I wanted was, for the most part, fulfilled, and I will happily come back before my couple of weeks working in the area is over.

On my most recent visit we ordered mapo tofu with pork intestines off the specials menu - a hybrid of two of my favorite Sichuan-style dishes. The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? Or the sweet-skinned duck, glazed so delicately that specks of sugar crystal threaten to jump off onto the plate as you pick up a juicy slice with your chopsticks? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. Bring friends and chow down family style - you'll need help covering as much of the menu as you can, but you'll definitely have to come back to try everything.

Lucky for me, they have their own parking lot, which already made everything super convenient. I walked in around 1:30 PM and was back out by 1:55 PM, so the service is definitely fast and friendly; perfect for a lunch break. The lunch menu has a huge variety of options, and every plate comes with fried rice and a pretty big egg roll. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but the quality of the food was fantastic. I can totally see how they've stayed open for 50+ years. I ordered the beef and broccoli... which honestly should be renamed to beef and vegetables, because it came with broccoli, carrots, and onions. Not complaining, though! The beef was tender and kind of reminded me of a beef fajita texture with how flakey and tender it was. The sauce was savory with garlic and soy sauce flavors and I really liked it. The veggies were cooked perfectly for my taste: still a little crunchy and not soggy. My only complaint was the onion. They were a bit too crunchy and raw, which made them super spicy and pungent, so I just moved them to the side. The egg roll was good, too! It tasted freshly made with cabbage that still had some crunch, which I love. Portion-wise, it was absolutely perfect. I finished everything except the onions and left feeling satisfied. Not heavy and not carrying leftovers, which I appreciate because some Chinese spots over serve. I paid about $20 including tip. Overall, I would 100% recommend this place and would definitely come back for lunch again.

Mongolian beef (2.5/5) - slightly over sauced for me; beef was pretty tender and there were carrots and edamame which is not the standard so maybe that's what makes it fusion? Fried rice (3/5) - standard style fried with small pieces of bean sprouts which I love so that was a nice surprise Egg roll (3/5) - I assume it was chicken because I didn't realize there was a choice) - it was crunchy and soft on the inside which I like, and pairs well with sriracha (did not eat till I got home) They seem to do a whole lot of take away. The staff were nice and hard working. I was excited when they first opened bc they had chow fun on the menu and being HK Cantonese, I love that dish but when I ordered it the 1st and 2nd time eight years ago instead of bean sprouts they had cabbage and that alters rhe flavor tremendously. I see why it's popular among the people but just don't think it is for my taste.

I followed the instructions exactly as stated, but when I mentioned it, the server initially refused to honor the promotion. After I pointed out the sign, she appeared upset and walked away.
