While randomly Googling, I remembered Boondoggles and decided to give the 'old place' another try. My first visit was for a dinner with classmates from UHCL; my second was with my brother. ​The eatery looked practically the same as it did nearly eight years ago. Its dive bar meets German beer hall vibe is still very much alive, and the place was still bustling with people. I came in with fish and chips on my mind, but a lengthy scan of the menu led me to the Florentini Chicken, while my brother ordered the shrimp po-boy. ​The Florentini Chicken was really good, and I think it's a solid choice for the health-conscious. The chicken was tender and the vegetables were perfectly crisp. My only wish was that the entire dish had been a bit larger, as the mashed potatoes were gone in just a few spoonfuls. On reflection, while the Florentini Chicken deserves a try, I'll probably stick with pizza next time. ​I asked my brother how he liked his shrimp po-boy, and he had no complaints, so I'll take that as a sign he enjoyed it. Price-wise, while the costs may have risen over the years, they were not unreasonable.

We came here recently for a Sunday lunch. Fortunately, there were only a handful of patrons here when we arrived (around 11:30). Within 30 minutes, the dining room was full, and we couldn't hear each other talk. I remember experiencing the same thing when this joint was known as Opus Bistro several years ago. Despite the noise, the dining room still offers an excellent view of the canal and the people pulling up on their boats. Again, the food here is OK. Nothing more. In fact, it was quite reminiscent of a Fertita-owned restaurant with lines of delivery trucks from Sysco and Gordon's lined up at the loading dock. More specifically, the coconut shrimp came out crispy with not much flavor beyond the cloyingly sweet sauce served alongside. The fries are battered. Not my bag, though they arrived at the table hot and crispy. (Since when do crispy fries need batter?!?) The tacos were average. Not bad, but nothing different than you would get at most other places. Same with the Caesar salad and crispy Brussels sprouts. The crab bisque tasted tomatoey. That's not a deal breaker, but I expect a garlicky, buttery broth that has been thickened with heavy cream. Not the case here, as this was flour-thickened with inexpensive ingredients. And the amount of crab was negligible. Those *are* deal breakers. The beer selection is fine here. And, again, the service was really good on our visit. Bottom Line: I totally want local businesses to succeed. But my money is also hard-earned, and I want the food to taste local and to be made with high-quality ingredients. When it doesn't -- and this place doesn't -- I might as well grab a Groupon and go to Red Lobster.

It was a giant piece of plain cheesecake that had toppings on it from what seemed like a piece of baklava cake. Those toppings disappeared pretty quickly and that left us with a bunch of plain cheesecake. We were expecting the baklava flavors to be swirled into the cheesecake, which is why we found this to be disappointing. The service was pretty slow, which was surprising considering it was pretty empty as it was a Sunday night. I walked the Wicked Wine Run that was hosted by Haak winery. It was poorly organized. There were…read morenot enough water stops and you had to wait in line to get your water. It was self serve and there were cups all over the ground. By the time we got to the second water stop there was no water left. And at the finish line they also ran out of water. It was very hot out and several people fainted due to the heat and lack of water. Emergency ambulances were called for those who fained. We had signed up for this event in March 26 and the event took place is Sept 26. That was plenty of time to prepare for the amount of people who signed up for the race. They also served red wine at the finish line which only makes people hotter. In the FAQ's they showed the route which went through the vineyards. We ran and walk on pavement through neighborhoods where there was little to no shade and it was extremely hot. Haak Winery did a very poor job organizing this event and actually put people in danger by not providing enough water and other methods like misting stations to cool people down. Do better Haak Winery. I will never go to another run hosted by Haak Winery. Very disappointing.
