D'art makes delicious red wines, and their tasting room/facility is one of the most fun we have been to. My wife and I enjoy checking out wineries all over Northern CA. Whether its Napa, the foothills, or the delta, there are delicious wines to be had. But finding delicious wines, friendly tasting room staff, and a fun facility can be a tall order. D'art fits the bill to a "T". They specialize in reds, so if you don't like reds, this might not be the place for you. But if you do like reds, you are in for a treat. Our favorites are the Dog Day Red, Winemakers Blend, and the Garnacha. They have big, bold, jammy flavors. The port is also fantastic. But if that's all there was to D'art, they would be as good as many other local wineries. What sets them apart is that they have movie nights, barrel room dinners, and bottling events for their members. They also usually have a corn hole set or two setup in the and, and the playful dog Maggie is always happy to drop a tennis ball at your feet for a game of fetch. I was in Lodi for a wedding and with some time to kill in the afternoon, a brilliant idea came to mind: impromptu wine tasting! D'art was my second stop and I made it just in the nick of time before closing. The two ladies there were great and had no problem sticking around for a little longer to pour my tastings. The red across the board were all quite nice with notables being the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 Zinfandel and 2008 Petite Sirah. If you find D'Art wines, you are in for a real wine tasting treat! Dave and Helen are truly salt of the earth people. Dave is always ready to share his knowledge and appreciation for the art of making wine. You can tell he is a creative soul and it is expressed in his wines. Helen is an absolute gem and runs the tasting room. She is a sweetheart of a lady and you can't help but to leave this place with a smile. For the wines? They are the most drinkable and ready to be consumed wines I can think of. If you are lucky, you might have a chance at a wine club release like a Tempranillo, or Garnacha. However, those wines don't last very long so if you have an opportunity jump on that bottle if you can. His other reds, like the Dog Day Red, are very user friendly and great for summer drinking in the back yard. He also makes a very approachable Cabernet for people maybe just getting into the more luxurious and more cerebral wines. You can find more popular wines at Michael David, but you will not find wines that express Dave's interpretation of everything from Spanish varietals to estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2nd place on our wine stop (my husband, my aunt and my uncle), came here because they offer a complementary wine tasting, which is pretty awesome because I don't know any place that would offer a free wine tasting. When we first got here, we were greeted (or maybe not...) by a dog barking halfway from the parking lot and the entrance to the tasting room. This dog was barking until we walked over to her and she then stopped barking and led us over the tasting room entrance. When we were probably a few steps away, this other dog joined us (a younger female dog). But you know, that is just a few people's opinions. Wine is very subjective, so don't hold my opinion of their wine against this place. The tasting room is kind of small. But I really enjoyed my time being here (despite the taste of the wine) because the owner was very friendly and her 2 dogs were just so sweet. They are just hanging out and walking around or lying around. You can just come up to them and pet them and they won't bark or growl or attack you. Honestly, very, very sweet dogs. It's funny, but we asked the owner how does she keep her dogs from eating the grapes. She told us that they never tried to (if you don't know, grapes are poisonous to pets, so don't give them any). My uncle figured maybe the dogs already knew it wasn't good for them, thus they staying away from them. Anyways, before we were going to leave, the owner thanked us for coming in and even suggested a few wineries to go visit, which I was surprised that she did. Essentially the other wineries are her competition right? But yet she was so nice in offering her recommendations for the rest of our winery self tour (oh by the way, make sure you pick up a free Lodi wine map for all the wineries in Lodi... I believe there are actually 90+ wineries in Lodi). Overall, probably one of the best wine tasting experiences I ever had, even though I didn't even like the wine I had. Soooo my husband and I stopped in here yesterday, and to be honest, we were mostly confused and a little bit offended. The only greeting we received was from the adorable doggo on the property. When we walked into the tasting room, there were some folks in there, but it wasn't crazy busy. We found a spot at the counter, and waited...... and waited.... and waited some more. There were at least 5 employees working, and granted some of them were busy. But no one even said "hello" or "we'll be right with you" or "let me just finish up over here and I'll be right there." We tried to make eye contact with a few of the employees and they wouldn't even look at us. One of them was moving bottles around or something, and when she was finished, she stretched, sighed, walked over to the employee who was helping the couple next to us, said something to the effect of "okay! Finally done with that." So we thought, great! Someone can finally help us! But....... still we waited as she just walked away. So my husband set a timer for 60 seconds and we decided if no one said hello in that 60 seconds, we would leave. And 60 seconds later our experience here was over. Am I actually dead, a wino ghost doomed to haunt wineries forever and just don't know it? Still tbd I guess, but the folks down the road at Oak Farm Vineyard could see us just fine, so I'm thinking not. read more

d'Art Winery was an oasis in a desert filled with vineyards.... Lol...I know it sounds corny but getting there was half the fun!! We were actually greeted by the owners as we walked up to the tasting room. Cool factor #1... And then as we tasted the wine, our tasting host explained all of the art was from the owner. Cool factor #2... The name of the Winery came from a play on the owners last name "Dart". Get it? d'Art... Cool factor #3... Lastly... Great tasting with an overwhelming amount of wine to be tasted. Whitest wine they had on their list were a White Cab and a White Syrah. Both very tasty..and I usually have little respect for reds that are 'whites', because it usually means a 4th or 5th press of the grapes. But, these were robust and it was apparent that they actually set out to make these white/reds intentionally. All their reds were nice and not too tannin-y Smooth, sweet wines.. We had to grab a bottle of the Dog Day Blend and a port. Loved their contribution to art.. classes going on in back. Looked fun.. would love to come back. Granted - I've never been wine tasting before so I don't really know what I'm talking about, but D'art had totally delicious wine, and a great tasting menu. One possible drawback is that there were tons of 20 somethings being noisy and slightly obnoxious. For me, this is entertainment but maybe you like something a little less Jersey Shore. Even though D'Art didn't have appetizers for sale (you stand at a counter and hope that the hostess notices you), they let us buy glasses of wine after the tasting to drink outside while we ate our own crackers and cheese. And I do have to mention here that my fellow tastees are veterans of the California/Oregon/European tasting circuit and knew the drill or I would have been totally lost standing behind 20 year olds waiting for my first taste. Disorganized. They were supposed to notify my girlfriend of wine she'd ordered last year, but we didn't know for sure until after repeated phone calls. When we did turn up, the situation wasn't much better, and they weren't sure which wine she had even ordered. We did eventually leave with their Barbera wine. Now, I'm no wine connoisseur, but I've been to more than my share of good and bad wineries (you have to try Jarvis in Napa), so I do have an idea about wine. The two we did try there were not very good, and so we decided to not stick around. On a positive note, the were having a members event with a band, which I'm sure would have been pleasant if the wine was good. They also had food, but a quick glance suggested none of it was vegan. As for the Babera? Mediocre. The kind of wine you take to parties where you don't know the hosts so well. Sorry Lodi, I won't be back anytime soon. read more

I'm going to start with the good. For the Lodi wine tasting experience, I recall that this was one of the best. I visited with a group during the Wine & Chocolate Festival. The ambiance is great, esp the back area where the barrel tasting occurred. Sounds like they have lots of events for members which is also great. The not so great part was the futures experience that can use some process improvement. I purchased a 1/2 case in Feb of last year paying in full. I was told that it would be ready for pickup in April. April passed with no communication except for my follow up. Wine wasn't ready. Again I wrongfully assumed that I would get an email when wine was ready for pickup, but alas nothing. With a bit more commotion we picked up the wine earlier this month. Bottom line is you need to have a communication system in place when you are taking peoples money and you're trying to become a destination alternative to Napa/Sonoma. Especially when everyone isn't a local and it's a bit of a haul to Lodi. The wine itself, the Barbera, is disappointing and I hope that it improves with age. read more

Had a great time from start to finish. We are not fancy people by any means nor do we know too much about wine but we felt at ease immediately after walking in. And the wines weren't bad either. This rating is merely given on their customer service and my personal experience. I will say that I must know a lil bit about good wine because I did enjoy their most popular wine which is the dog day red. Delicious. I also took home a bottle of the white port. I am very surprised by the high rating at Yelp for this place. D'art is very tiny and could get very crowded because of their layout. Not much ambiance but the staff was overall friendly and helpful. The wine is OK but nothing spectacular. You can find better deals and better wine at other wineries in the area. Love their dog! D'Art was one of stops during a wine tasting in Lodi. Overall, wine tasting in Lodi is very low-key and the wineries are spread out throughout town. Even so, the overall experience was enjoyable and frustration free since it's not was crowded or gridlocked as Napa. Their wine tasting must have been great...considering I was a stumbling fool when trying to walk out of their wine tasting room . I even needed a breather and had to give my car keys to my friend and have him drive home. The power of D'Art wine! LOL! In terms of experience, the cool thing about this place is what it seems like the winery is part of the family's residence. So, you see the owner's family walking about and their dogs frolicking around. When I walked in, Maggie, one of the dogs jumped on me and wanted a few pets. That was cool. Quite a welcome! Also, in addition to their wines, the owner also sells his personal art drawings which are also used on their wine labels. In terms of their wine, they have quite an extensive selection. The staff gave a quick explanation if each of their wines and possible pairings with food. My favorite was the Port and the Dog Day Red. The Dog Day Red is a blend of their other wines giving it a full, rich, but light semi-sweet taste. Plus, the dog on the label is also a nice touch. d'Art has a pretty decent selection of red wines with some nice artwork on the labels. Most their wine is pretty average but they do have some knockouts once in a while. The tasting room is getting better and better, its kind of in the middle of an identity crisis but you can tell they are working on making it nicer. They have some fun wine club gatherings (my favorite being the bottle your own wine event). They are a little disorganized and sometimes not the friendliest, it just depends on who is working. I have consistently had problems with their website as a wine club member and don't live in the area so that was always a bummer. Overall they have pretty good wine especially for the price. Of all the places in Lodi, this was by far my entire party's favorite. Every wine was excellent from the cab to the port and definitely appealed to anyone with a taste for red and dessert wines. However I couldn't help but being especially OVER wowed by their Dog Day Red and smoky Barbera . The dog day red was a nice medium red wine finishing off with a sweet taste from the port grapes blended in. $18! This was my last stop for the Lodi Wine & Chocolate Festival for the weekend. I couldn't have picked a better place to end with. There were two barrel tastings and I really appreciated the effort they took to make sure people tasted the difference in the correct order. Not too many wineries offer that experience. During the festival, there was a chili cook-off and this winery had one of them. The chili from this woman was so good I had to vote for her. I want that recipe! D'art Wines tasting room treated us like royalty during our visit. The friendly staff made conversation easy without feeling pressured to buy or any pretentiousness. We felt free to be ourselves, chat it up with other visitors and socialize with the friendly and playful dogs. Everyone was enjoying themselves. We can't thank the owners enough for inviting us to set up a picnic in the barrel room. We were privileged to be given a barrel tasting of Syrah that was going to be bottled the following week.
