Mark did my yard 5 yr ago. I am still happy, He was here about 6 mth and I got to know him quite well. He is great at what is called "hard scaping" patio's, rocks, sidewalks est. I found him a little weak (just a little) on the garden side of things, planting trees. bushes est... One of the things I liked most about him is he would go out of this way to hire & work with people who had problems, most people would have nothing to do with these people. Mark just has a big heart. When here he rehired a man who had stoled from him. Yet he forgave the man and put him back to work, "after a few weeks as punishment". He did keep a close eye on his men and I felt safe having them here. Mark did most the work himself as he trained the others on his crew. Had a consultation with Mark over 3 weeks ago. It was a pleasure to meet him, super easy to talk to. He even drew up a sketch of what my ideas were for my front yard. He took my email address down and stated will send me a PDF file with I'm assuming was my bid. ...I've received nothing. Mark and his team did an EXCELLENT job of transforming my jungle of a backyard to a beautiful, warm, inviting space. Prices are reasonable, and we had a good array of pavers to choose from. I'm the weird person who likes cool tones - blues, grays, etc, and Mark was able to get the perfect paver for our patio. Every other contractor tried to convince me to go warm. My husband and I don't really know much about plants, but Marks suggestions worked perfectly. We weren't looking for high-maintenance, but we didn't want to be completely colorless. The outcome was a great blend of greens, whites, purples. Everyone who has visited has loved how the yard has turned out. We hooked up with our landscape designer who has worked extensively with Cypress Landscaping. After interviewing multiple landscapers who also came recommended we chose to push forward with Cypress. The concrete driveway and walkways were the first project to be completed with the front yard landscaping following. The workers are on time and very courteous. Just over a year ago, my wife and I decided it was time to put in our backyard in a new construction home that was about two years old. I wanted to avoid the pitfalls of going with the low bid contractor based on my nightmarish experience of my previous home. We began by calling licensed contractors -- some that had completed projects in our neighborhood and some recommended by Granite Rock (Cupertino). After receiving very competitive bids from four contractors, we decided upon Mark McGarry / Cypress Landscaping. We were most impressed by his honesty, but, he also came highly recommended from customers all over the South Bay area. 11 months later, we couldn't be more happy and thrilled about the artistry of Mark, his dedicated crew, and Cypress Landscaping! The eye-popping work of Mark and his crew is a pleasure to come home to. We wanted to make our home an enjoyable "staycation" if we weren't able to leave out of town because of raising a toddler. A "licensed contractor" is not truly a "Licensed contractor" unless they are licensed through the State Contractors License Board AND have a bond on file. Be weary of the "licensed contractors" who show up for your bid, take your money, and then are NEVER seen on your property, instead entrusting the job to some day laborers (and God bless them -- the day laborers, that is). Try finding a licensed contractor who has long term crew members of over 5 - 10 years, pays his crew a livable and honest wage and carries workers comp insurance for each of them. I did. Redoing a backyard is not a small feat, not to mention, not a small cost. Needless to say my husband and I did a lot of research when picking the right person for the job. We were beyond impressed with Mark and his team. From the get go, Mark was professional, reliable and knowledgeable - not to mention, he is just a nice guy! He really saw our vision and executed it - even when we weren't quite sure what that vision was yet. He made suggestions when the plan needed altering and he never steered us wrong. His team was always on time and always friendly. He went above and beyond and we LOVE our new backyard. Especially now that our 1 year old has a nice place to play. Mark communicates well, but has a hard time returning calls/emails. He recently put in a stamped concrete patio and lawn for us. The patio was poorly done, with shallow stamp marks and the steps had to be done over again. The steps still turned milky and off color. The sod was put down on top of gopher wire. I told him that all the literature I saw said to lay around 2 inches of soil on top of the wire so the sod roots could get a strong start and it would help keep the wire down. He said that he always did it this way and he has never had a problem. I relented thinking he knew best. I followed all instructions that Mark gave me about watering. He and his workers set the sprinklers for the correct coverage. All literature said to stake the wire every foot to keep it flat. He staked on the average every 3 feet. I even had to tell Mark that his workers didn't roll the wire in all the areas of the lawn before laying the sod, so Mark rolled the areas after the sod was put in. I have many areas of my lawn that never took well and I have been told by other landscapers that it is because of no soil on top of the wire, and areas where wire is up off the ground. I can step in one place and watch another place move! And this 4600 square foot lawn was dug by hand(shovels!) If you look at his website it appears he uses the best equipment available to do the best job. I expected a bobcat, but whatever! Mark was not always with his workers and it seemed to me that they worked much harder when he was.It seemed to us that he was trying to get the job done as soon as possible and get out. I even had to ask him to show me how to use the adjustment key on the sprinklers. It took him about a minute and he was off to another job. I ended up having to go on youtube for a more in depth explanation. All in all, I have to look out at my lawn everyday. I think of the money it cost me ( higher than some others) and how I fell victim to Marks' talk. Live and learn. Mark C. read more
