My husband and I always wanted our children to have a Christian education but were new to Katy when our oldest turned 5. When we enrolled in 2017, BCA was extremely small (only 40 kids). Each year the school has grown and next year I hear we will have 400 students K through 12. This is really exciting, because the highschoolers will have more opportunities such as athletics through TAPPS and FFA. My kids are athletic and love to play multiple sports. At BCA sports begin in 5th grade and they are able to play volleyball, flag football, basketball, and run track and cross country. Apparently it's on the horizon that BCA will offer baseball and 7 man tackle football soon as well. While it is wonderful that we are now able to provide some of these opportunities to the kids, that is not what keeps us at BCA. BCA is special because while many schools are Christian only in name, BCA teaches every single subject through a biblical lens. Why do we teach students math? Because God is a God of order and He gave us math as a tool - it is worthy of learning! Why teach students science? Because all the world is His creation. We also value BCA teachers are not simply trying to cram information into students so that they test well - they want the students to love learning. I feel like every teacher my child has had (and at this point we have had over 50 across my 3 children) has truly seen my child for who they are and worked with them to grow their individual gifts and improve areas where they struggle. The teachers don't just care for the students during the school year either - it's year round. My daughter's math teacher is hosting a Bible study for her home over the summer for the girls. Another thing I love about BCA is that they teach the kids to treat others with respect. The students say "yes ma'am" and "no sir" to teachers and other authority. Boys pull out chairs for girls and hold doors open, and girls say thank you in return. In an era where chivalry seems relatively dead, we get a lot of compliments on the students for having this basic etiquette. I also really appreciate that it is a cell phone free campus. There are no Chromebooks, and no student is allowed to have a cell phone at any point during the school day no matter what their age or grade. While I initially wondered how my kids would learn to do assignments on a computer if there were non at school, they do learn in upper school. My 9th grader has become proficient in typing and has performed many assignments online, while also being a confident public speaker. Public speaking has huge emphasis at BCA - there are various assignments and opportunities throughout the year in which each and every student presents or recites in front of their peers. Finally, it's a wonderful community of parents. Volunteering is a requirement at the school - each family must volunteer a minimum of 20 hours. That leads to parents being on campus often and getting to know one another. There are also lots of social opportunities for parents - there are moms coffee dates, moms night out, dads nights, a book club, and more. If you want a Christ centered education for your kids, this is it!

While they're the most…read moreaffordable option around, the atmosphere, lack of communication, cooperation, and consideration for our family ultimately caused us to make our decision. We were extremely excited when we got accepted two years ago, just when the Covid restrictions were being lifted. We knew that public schooling was no longer an option and prayed for direction on what to do. We were introduced to this school by a friend whose child was enrolled and is no longer for similar reasons. At first, they were very kind and gracious and we obviously shared the love of Jesus. It wasn't until we got a few months in and realized that there is serious control issues with the leadership. Everything must be approved and conveyed through the principal who is also the pastor of the independent fundamentalist baptists church that the school operates out of. So much so, that you can never get an immediate answer on anything from anyone, even if they're the individual who is in charge of the department that the questions pertain to. All question to the teachers about anything related to the students must be filtered through him first so that he can dictate what their responses should be. I digress because I could go on and on, but won't belabor at this juncture. We had several conversations with the pastor/principle and he informed us that he had some regrets about opening up enrollment to "non church members" because of differences in opinions. Which was basically his way of saying that any Christians who are not in lock step with methodologies and beliefs of his church are problems because they actually stand up and voice their concerns. Yes, we kept our daughter there for two years. For one reason, the price was unbeatable compared to other private Christian schools. The second was because she got a new teacher who we thought would be a nice change. While I can say that her new teacher was an improvement, it still didn't affect how the school operated. I have to include that both of my daughter's teachers (from last year and this year) are no longer teaching at the school for reasons I care not to discuss here, but just know that they do not pay or treat the teachers very well, AT ALL! To be honest, they teach using the Bob Jones homeschool curriculum, which is basically you paying for homeschooling and then also paying for someone to teach via the homeschooling curriculum. I'm not saying that this is either good or bad. I'm just stating the facts. You make your own decisions. From what we're told, the students rank very high in regards to their academics and are in the highest percentiles, especially compared to public schools, but now that I think about it, we were never given the actual statistics and what measure they were using to determine that information. Honestly, while the price is very desirable, if you're not a member of their church or if you have a voice and expect to be treated with respect and honor, don't bother considering this school for your children. If you're someone who is too meek to stand up for yourself, this school may be right for you. It wasn't for us.

It took the teachers longer than what I was comfortable with to tell the child to stop - I actually had to intervene before the teachers got there. Other things I saw: a baby eating a Froot Loop off the floor, the battery cover to a baby swing dangling off (batteries exposed), a napper in a crib (which is a suffocation hazard - not sure if it was there for storage or if they use it like that on babies). Teachers and babies were in this classroom - it wasn't an empty room. I also didn't see toys for the children to play with. It was just babies sitting in a room with some adults. I also saw: dirty/dingy carpets that the older kids play on, the sides of the rubber tiles in the splash pad rolled up due to being exposed to the elements (tripping hazard), and the tour guide telling me sometimes they mix up the baby bottles - they try not to but it happens (dangerous for babies with allergies or for sick babies). The menu also looked lack-luster. I would have expected healthier options from a Montessori, but I'm new to all this so who knows. On the plus side, the kids seemed happy and the staff seemed nice, albeit lax on safety. The price is good. The older kids' classrooms had more to them in terms of stimulation and activity.

The current director is aware of a teacher putting their hands on two children and that teacher has had no consequences. She has a "30-day suspension" where she is still allowed to work around kids, including the two she put her hands on. I would not recommend working here nor bringing your kids here. I keep in contact with parents and they repletely tell me what the administrative staff tells them, how rudely they talk to them and how little they make the parents feel. One time I had one of my kids choke on a piece of food and I had to do the Heimlich maneuver on said kid. Thankfully it came out and the kid is ok, but they did not inform the parents of what happened to their own child. So said child went home and said she choked on a piece of food, the mother texted me that night furiously asking me what happened. When I explained the situation and told her I told the administrative staff, she was even more furious. They failed to contact the mother, which resulted in me having to calm her down. Another time I had one of my kids hit his head hard, to the point where he was bleeding and had to go get surgical glue for the cut. I called on the walkie in tears saying I needed help, and no one came. It took another teacher to tell them to come to my room. The front obviously had favorites, but they are so petty to the point where they would ignore a bleeding child simply because they did not like me. All the front desk did was ignore us and talk bad about the parents. So bad to the point where a parent left in tears and withdrew her kid, I still keep in touch, and she was so happy for me when I told her I was not at chrysalis anymore. They will talk bad about you and your child; I have heard it with every single kid who walks in that door. Chrysalis never ever had one good thing to say about me. I was there for almost two years and on my last day my boss told me the following "None of the parents or kids liked me. I am not fit to be a teacher; I was a bad teacher, and I should have been gone a long time ago." The office staff is very petty and very messy, after my time at chrysalis I had staff tell me "So and so said this about you" one month after I was gone. The front desk women are very messy and very unprofessional. They made the work environment so unbearable and toxic. The teachers there were overworked, tired, crying, and the front and director did nothing to help. She gave us a chocolate bar and that was it. I loved my kids, to this day I babysit and keep in contact with them. It was never the kids. They were the best kids to me. The main problem was the front desk, the director and the way they ran things. I have more and more stories about chrysalis, but it keeps me up at night feeling so bad the teachers who are good teachers there. PLEASE DO NOT WORK OR BRING YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL. If my coworkers are reading this, I hope you realize the pain you have brought upon me. Chrysalis 'Christian' preschool is nothing but a scam. Do NOT contact me.
