My CD changer in my 2008 Mazda 6 w/ Bose died and after 2 months of Austin radio I decided I needed to do something about it. When the changer first died I emailed Custom Sounds and got an estimate on how much it would cost. I knew it would be pricey due to the existing Bose system (Bose doesn't play well with after-market parts). Turns out it was a little more than I thought as the Mazda 6 requires the face of the center console to be replaced to allow for a single or double DIN stereo. When I finally decided to go ahead with this I visited Custom Sounds in person. The employee I had emailed with no longer worked there and hadn't documented our conversation. Dustin gave me a new quote. It was about $50 more than the original which didn't bother me. It's quite possible the original was missing some things and I had asked for an estimate not a binding quote. Dustin was able to work with my schedule and get me in a couple days later on a Saturday (the only day I could do it). I dropped the car off and when I returned home I got a call from Dustin saying they started the work and noticed I had a Bose system and it would be about $70 more due to another part and some more labor. That was pretty frustrating but I told him to go ahead. Austin radio is that bad. A couple hours later they called to say my car was ready. Dustin took me out to my car and walked me through how to use the new receiver and pair it with my phone. The installation looks great and everything (including the existing steering wheel controls) works perfectly. They even mounted the mic for bluetooth phone connections in a way that you can't see the wire going to the receiver. Even better, the extra part and labor weren't needed as the receiver I chose was able to pump out sound at a level that worked fine with the existing Bose amp and speakers. Saved me $70. My only regret is the installation was much better than I expected. If I had know it was going to look this good I would've spent an extra $100 for a double DIN touch screen receiver. With that you'd never know my car had an after-market unit in it. read more

John was very professional and straight forward. I tried the other locations they have including the one 10 minutes from my house. Every store was rude like I was interrupting them. After talking with John on the phone I was willing to make the drive to his location. I wasn't pleased with the system I had and wanted to upgrade but he tested everything and it looked like a sub was blown. He showed me options but decided to investigate more and determined the amp was going out and the wiring was . He upgraded the amp and reran everything. Bought a groupon for an automatic starter to be added to my vehicle. Groupon was $146. Fine print stated: "Keyless Entry w/ Light Flash option is $70 on most vehicles that already have power door locks. Basic bypass module included: some cars require advanced or complex bypass module at an $80 additional fee, including VW, Infiniti, Lexus, Acura and others. Not good on Audi, SAAB, Benz, Rover, BMW, Porsche, Volvo, or any manual transmission. Plan to ''lose'' 1 key used to interface unit to car. Using advanced bypass may eliminate need to ''lose'' 1 key in many cars. Comes w/ 1 remote, add'l remotes available for $10" The guy that answered the phone when I called to set up the appointment had an attitude when I mentioned the groupon and asked about the possible extra charges. He asked the type of vehicle that I have (2014 dodge van) and he said that it *may need the bypass, but he wouldn't know until they were in there, placing it. He said that he was busy and had a customer in front of him. He took my info to call me back later that day. He never called. I called again the next day. Same guy, same attitude. He told that my 2014 Dodge caravan would cost an additional ~$175. That was for the $80+$70 fees, plus ~$25 in tax. I asked why $25 in tax on $150 (should be about $12). He said they charge tax on the total, including the groupon price. They don't actually get the full groupon price though, so they are effectively charging tax on unearned income. Either way, my groupon price had now more than doubled and it was no longer a question of if I needed the complex bypass. I called a couple more places to comparison shop and realized this was no longer a deal at all, since it would be over $320, all in. I found that I could get a better system elsewhere, at full price, and it would be integrated in with my key fob (rather than needing a 2nd key pad). I called groupon and cancelled my groupon. I can go to a more highly rated shop for the same price and not deal with Mr. 'Tude. read more

These people are awesome. I had a problem with my back up camera ( image was reversed somehow). I brought the car in but they couldn't fix it by pressing buttons. So I made arrangements to come in again. The guy at the counter was so sweet and allowed me to just stay there while they looked at the car radio. They managed to fix the problem in about five minutes flat. They are super! I will be back when I need another sound system. read more

Pretty disappointed in this place. I walked in a couple of months ago asking about installing a stereo. The guy, John, told me to call and make an appointment when I'm ready. Been trying to call for 2 weeks and no one answers the phone. I call another location and they confirmed the Pflugerville store is in fact open and I should leave a message. There is no voice mail for me to leave a message on. So I drive there and there's John in the front, sitting by the phone. He confirms the phones work. Hire 1-2 more people for this place. Clearly you had a customer to give you business but ended up disliking this place because of the big round guy being a dick douche bag. Young guy was somewhat ok at counter but he didn't man up and bother expressing his voice. Don't know if the round guy is the manager but he seemed to over step and not bother help rather be lazy and voice his agressive opinion. Unless you have money to spend with poor up front service don't bother. This is a great shop that will take care of you. John is patient, funny, and looks out for your best interests. Mitch is a fantastic installer. And I recently got to work with Matt from their main office, who is equally great and knows more about car audio than most people have forgotten. I first brought my F-150 in for a sound upgrade and some window tint back in March. They did a great job with all of it then but due to some limitations of the new radio in the F-150 it didn't sound as good as it could have - not their fault. Fast forward a few months and a brand new aftermarket interface for the 2018 F-150 is released on the aftermarket. So new, there were a few speedbumps before it worked right. Throughout it all the guys at Custom Sounds were there, and even let me hang out in their shop while they worked, until everything ended up great. You can find car audio installers everywhere. Finding ones that stick with you and provide great support are what sets them apart. Highly recommend going to these guys. You get what you pay for here. read more

i bought two subs and an amp the subs are super great probably the best i've owned and for only 50 bucks each but on the other hand the amp they sold me one that was wet and it wouldn't work and it didn't come with the rca cable for newer truck and it has the port for it i tried calling because i live and hour and half away and i don't want to risk it for them not returning but they wouldn't pick up how will they sell me such a product i've been trying to get ahold of them but they just don't pick up so i'll give them a 2 and half star read more

My expectations for Custom Sounds was quite high, given their stellar reputation over the years. So it was a great surprise and disappointment when it turned out to be quite a bad experience. I called on their Pflugerville location to have a Bluetooth-enabled sound system upgrade to my wife's Volvo S-60. My budget was about $400. I worked with manager John De Young and initially left the car with them for the afternoon. There were several issues with my experience: 1. On several occasions John promised to call me back with an update within a time period that he specified. He never did. I always had to call him. Sometimes I would wait for several hours or even days after he promised to call before I finally called him. This happened during the initial installation when he was to call with a completion estimate. When the actual promised completion time was exceeded. When a consult with another technician on installing the steering column controls was supposed to happen. And finally when another installation attempt was supposed to happen. I'm actually still waiting on that call and it's been months. 2. The work was never completed. The attempt to patch the sound in to the steering controls was never finished, and they have never bothered to call as promised. 3. Each visit raised the cost even further. The cost far exceeded my budget (by 2 times). 4. The work left the airbag indicator disabled. It will now cost even more money for the Volvo dealer to fix that. Except for the steering column controls, the unit works well. But I will never use them again, and can not recommend that anyone use them. They never followed up on any of their promises, they did not complete the installation, and the cost far exceeded my budget. read more

I had taken my Tahoe to John at Custom Sounds several years back for a small facelift... Little GPS screen and remote start was my only need. I left my vehicle there and returned to work - John called me less than 3 hours later and everything was installed! BUT... he did notice I had some internal issues on a blown speaker and wiring issue from a previous company who installed them. No type of "hey this needs fixin" nothing to that nature. He fixed them for me that same day as well, at an AMAZING price talking pennies on the dollar here folks!!!!! I just was taken back on how honest, forthcoming & HOWGENUINE JOHN WAS!! The following month I was looking to do another 'upgrade' with speakers. He gave me quotes on speakers and packages. I did do a little research on a couple other companies with 'good deals' - 'mom /pop shops' I was told that could beat my initial quote. It took less than a blink for me to make my choice for this LARGE investment as John's price was $1,000 less than absolutely anywhere PLUS DOUBLE WARRANTY! This is not a sounds tooooo good to be true story. This is an absolutely amazing experience(s) EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT! I continue to have with John at Custom Sounds. Bought a Kenwood DNX890HD radio/nav/Bluetooth and installation 5 years ago from the Pflugerville store for my MB SLK280. Recently, it stopped working and I made an appointment with Custom Sounds and brought the car in to check it out. They were very arrogant to me and said it was going to be all afternoon since they had 3 cars ahead of me. What was the point of making an appointment? After 45 minutes they called me to say they were done and the processor was gone it could not be repaired. I asked if they took the radio out and bench tested it and they said yes. When I got to the store they showed me an newer model for $1500.00. I decided to have another radio shop take the radio out and put it on a bench to test if it worked outside the car. It worked perfectly. The tech that took the radio out said Custom Sounds used the cigarette lighter for the power which ended up to be the problem because the connection failed and had fallen off. I guess it's easier to sell me a new radio and installation than to reconnect the power to a more reliable source and charge me for the labor. My new radio works very well and the Tech was friendly and answered all of my questions very professionally. Buyer beware of Customs Sounds in Pflugerville. RH read more

If you're considering going here TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE. The sales associate John (tall, old, white, bearded) was exceptionally rude to a Black male customer in front of me, and it made me nervous to ask my questions for fear of being condescended to. When I was finally at the counter, John was very short with answering my questions, as expected, and when I told him I received different information via the phone and was just looking for clarification and understanding, he snapped at me yet again. I felt very insulted and he even laughed along with other customers about my brief conversation with him. I also found out after I took my business to another location that he had called that location and said I "cause a scene" when I hardly said 3 sentences to the man and left shortly after I realized he wasn't interested in helping me. I believe he made that call to keep another associate from helping me and to cover his bases in case I made a complaint. I believe John is a bigot, and if you're a person of color, I would definitely avoid going to this location for any quality customer service. read more

Here's the deal I decided Saturday midday I wanted a stereo in my toyota fj I called custom sounds at 1230 I got john on the phone, yes he's the man. If you have problems with how he handles himself at work there's a good chance the problem is you. He helped me out told me everything I needed to know about the product with out looking down or talking down to me. Install was great executed in a very acceptable timeline considering when I stopped in. There was a small mix up that occurred not important enough to go into detail but there was an error not in my favor. I got a call Monday from John he found the error and wanted to square up. I returned the mistake fixed on my way like nothing every went wrong. John could have left things how they were and I would have got the short end but he made it right when I may not have ever known what went down. Good humans there. Got a window tint on my new Hyundai veloseter a couple months ago only took a couple hours and it was done by the time they said it would be.Tint has held up fine no bubbles or anything couldn't have asked for much more. Staff was also very nice in helping chose what was right for me. read more

Tried telling me that the amps i bought from JL Audio were no good and pushed me to buy another JL Audio Amp from them instead. Not really sure were they get their associates from but they should require anyone who works for them to at least hold a business degree from college as these people are just looking to take advantage of the stupid. Having grown up around here, I've been hearing about custom sounds pretty much my whole life. So when I made my first purchase on a brand new car, I wanted to do it up right and get my tint done! It's Texas and you just pretty much have to have it! Needless to say, I came to custom sounds. That has been a little over 5 years ago! 5 years!! John was there for me and walked me through all my options, the pros and cons of it all! We found the perfect tint for me and my price range. Which I don't mind sharing with you...LESS THAN $300 and my car was as dark and protected as I could get it! I kept the receipt in my glove compartment because it also came with LIFETIME WARRANTY! They mean it! There were no strings to that! 5 years later and I have a little bubbling happening on my passenger side. I just pulled up with no appointment, saw the same nice gentleman that helped me the first time (John), he walked out to my car with me to see the window and my receipt, and now they have my car in the back fixing it up. I'll be out of here in probably less than 30 minutes of pulling up! Yes I'm still sitting here writing this review! Because I am so amazed at their customer service, their promise to back their product, and absolutely ZERO hassle with the entire experience (5 years ago till now!). I took a sneak peek at the work with actual solder (I don't think anyone else here in Austin actually does this anymore) and heat shrink. Total rip off for people who think there are no other options. I recommend Fry's, Best Buy or any other shop in town setup to perform installs. Buy your parts at any retailer and schedule the install somewhere else besides this joint. Tell the shop what you want as far as wire, soldered connections, clean neat job etc. Get a warranty from them. BTW this joint left a mess in my car. There were wire snippings on the floor. Foot and hand prints everywhere. It was raining that day and they cant even run a vacuume. The first thing out of their mouth when asked about the charges is, "oh we do quality work"...lie. I watched a You tube video of a shop installing the exact same unit in a small suv. My car non Bose 2013 Altima. There are zero special requirements for this install on this car. This joint in Pflugerville and I would guess every other joint they run is for suckers. If I had his job I would hide behind the law too. If I had the time this company would be in small claims court out of principal.
