If I had a thousand years, I STILL wouldn't have time to express how much I love, appreciate, and admire Ron, Jake, Amanda and the rest of the team at Custom Sheet Metal, Inc.! I will sing their praises from the highest points in Texas - and here's why: My sweet cousin, Steven, has a home in Pflugerville with average-ish, contractor-grade, ugly, plain fixtures... including (and especially) his fireplace trim kit. Talk about yucky! *blech* It just so happens that Steven is not only an elementary school teacher, but a most talented graphic designer, too... and has a terrific, artistic eye for creating and designing. He came up with the cool idea to take off the drab fireplace trim and replace it with a new, custom-made stainless steel piece, instead. However, he first needed to find someone who could fabricate such a thing - hopefully by using his old trim as a template. After going to a couple of 'other' metal businesses and getting discouraged from either A) the price or, 2) the rejection, fortunately he came across Ron and his team at Custom Sheet Metal... and they not only said that yes - it's possible to make a new trim, but quoted him a price within his educator budget! Steven was THRILLED! We removed his old trim, took it to Ron, and only had to wait a couple of weeks for the finished product - and it was well worth the time spent! Talk about a PERFECT fit and, frankly, a piece of art! This new trim was GORGEOUS and did wonders for the appearance of Steven's fireplace... but he was far from being done! The next step in the fireplace makeover was to remove the 12"x12" pieces of green (?!) tile around the opening of the firebox. Steven decided he wanted to use 2" mesh-backed, checkerboard tiles from floor to ceiling around the fireplace... and that's where I come in. Amongst many skillsets that I possess, tilesetting is one of them. I drove in from Dallas with all my tiling tools loaded in the back - ready to tackle the project! I saw the boxes of tiles to be used, but I didn't LOOK at the tiles. Once I'd installed HardieBacker board from ceiling to floor, I was ready to begin the tilesetting. Everything was going smoothly... until I got down to the fireplace and needed to make my first cut around the beautiful new trim. It suddenly dawned on me (at 10 o'clock at night, mind you) that my 4" diamond blade, hand-held, circular, DRY tile saw would NOT be the proper cutting utensil to use on the 2", mesh-backed, checkerboard, alternating GLASS and METAL tiles!!! AAaaarrrrgggghhh!! Needless to say, I was frustrated and discouraged... and that's putting it mildly! Every other tile was a piece of aluminum with either a bronze or silver face, while the tiles in between were actual glass. Not ceramic, porcelain, travertine, natural stone, etc. GLASS. METAL. Grrrr.... Yes, I DID attempt to cut the metal with my saw, however... it heated the tiles up to un-touchable temperatures in about .2 seconds, not to mention the blade kept skipping and marring the tile surface. Had I brought my metal cutting tools, there would have not been a problem, but I didn't know that this job would involve 'other' materials, so I was unprepared. Talk about a show-stopper! I had to shut things down for the night and think about where I could take this handful of final tile pieces to be cut... and then it hit me: RON AND JAKE AT CUSTOM SHEET METAL!! Sure enough, I headed over bright and early the next morning with the metal tiles in hand and they were more than happy to rescue me - and that's EXACTLY what they did!! Afterwards, I raced back to my cousin's house, finished installing the remaining tile, began grouting the upper portion, and later in the evening was able to grout around the fireplace and hearth. Boy, was Steven pleased... and I was immensely relieved!! From the instant that Steven and I went in to ask about fabricating a new front-piece for his fireplace to the moment Ron completed the final cut in the metal tile squares, I could not have been more pleased with the warm welcome we/I received, the professionalism, the courtesy, outstanding customer service, their sincere desire to help, their FRIENDLINESS, the excellent craftsmanship, their high quality of work, their rapid turn-around time (which was instantaneous when I came in desperate for help!), and SO much more! I couldn't help but marvel at all the work going on around us as Ron was cutting for me. It was so interesting to observe all the different metal projects with their numerous, intricate and various shapes, sizes, materials, cuts, angles, bends and folds! Clearly, these folks know their business, and I was mesmerized with fascinated admiration! There are not enough superlatives in the English language to accurately describe how great my experience has been with Custom Sheet Metal. I started working with Ron the owner probably in the late '90s, I would guess 1997 when he built me a custom battery box for my race car. Since then, he's built custom metal locking amp enclosures in 2 boats, ceiling mounts for the center and rear speakers in my loft, aluminum shrouds for my car stereo, countless custom brackets and modifications to existing metal parts I brought him. It's definitely made me realize I'm getting older as Jake, the owner's son was about 10 when I first started going there and now he's poised to take over the family business. On the rare occasions where I've put an unreasonable timeline on my work they have found a way to deliver. They tolerate my vague, non mechanically drawn instructions with patience and genuinely enjoy my projects. The most involved was a custom aluminum console in my Defender. I parked my truck in their bay for 3 days while they hand shaped it to fit the transmission tunnel. I was in need of metal brackets to replace the plastic brackets that hold the mattress on a vintage crib I used for my daughter over 30 years ago. Though my daughter wanted to use her old crib for her new baby, the crib was no longer safe to use with those brackets. Jake was quick to respond and was willing to accept the challenge of creating a metal protoype of the brackets. He was very thorough, conscientious, and attentive to my request.
