Stay away from this place! Drove 2 hours to buy a used camper shell that I was told was in perfect condition and it definitely was not. They lowered the price for me a little so I went ahead and purchased (mistake). They had a new lock that he sent me a picture of and it was a complete lock with the outside and inside handle in the pictures. Well when I got home I realized there was no handle on the inside of the door to open if you got locked in. So I called and asked if it was at the shop and he said no "just goto your nearest dealer and buy one they are cheap" so after doing research for this knob they all come with the door lock itself and don't sell separate so now if I get locked in my camper I have no way to open it from the inside. Additionally the latches were loose so when I went to tighten them one latch's bolts were stripped so I couldn't get the latch tighter and there was a piece of cardboard as a spacer. I was able to find a used bed shell for my 2008 Nissan Titan in decent shape. I called and spoke with Alfonso who showed me three options via their Craigslist app. I made a 9:00am appointment the next day. When I arrived they had it cleaned and ready for me. It took them :45 minutes to install. When we noticed one of the locks malfunctioning, their installer took 5 minutes to replace it, and I left with 2 new locks with 2 new keys and a nice new (to me) shell. All I can say is Jesus, Adam and Alfonso are top notch dudes with great customer service skills. I highly recommend going there for your new camper shells. read more

We came all the way from Laguna Niguel to hopefully purchase one of the campers being sold here and when we got to the location they told us that the employees are on break and that we had to wait 20 minutes so we did. When they got from their break they then told us that the camper was in another location which was approximately 5 minutes away. The location was right next to where the swap meet is around there and it was an enclosed parking lot full of these campers. These campers in this parking lot are OLD, rusty, and looked more like a junk yard than an actual place you'd want to purchase a nice camper. The photo they sent us of the camper was different than the one shown to us. Would never want to purchase anything from this place. It was a waste of time and gas money. read more

Avoid at all costs. I too wish I'd read the reviews before dealing with these jokers. I called this business on a Saturday to inquire about a used Leer Truck Cap they had advertised on Craigslist. Both Jesús and Adam assured me that the cap was in good shape and that they could install it the same day if I drove to Spring Valley from Oceanside arriving at 2PM. I pulled up in their parking lot at 1:45 (the place is a real dump, too) and Jesús greeted me at my truck and mumbled something about "we're slammed" and "follow me to the storage lot", which I did. We get to the lot and Jesús can't even find the cap they said would be ready to install at 2PM. These knuckleheads wasted several hours of my time, 100 miles of driving, and $50 in fuel, on a Saturday. FUCK.... I REPEAT....FUCK THESE ASSHOLES!!!!!! I went in to sell a used lumber rack off of my Tacoma. The guy looked at it, and actually offered me a fair price. We shook hands, it was cordial, then he said they would remove it for me. The guys looked busy in the shop, so out of courtesy, I removed my tool box for them and un-bolted to the C-clamps, and all they had to do was fork lift it off. When they guy started to lift, the rack was caught somewhere and it started to pull the truck up. I YELLED FOR HIM TO STOP, at which point I saw there was a broken lag bolt holding it on. The guy stopped, and I told him he needed to drill It out. The guy comes back with a pry bar and starts cranking on the thing while the forklift driver starts jacking it up again!!!! I yelled for him to stop, and before I could get the word out, the bolt broke loose, the lumber rack shot up and bounced down and smashed into my roof, leaving a massive dent and chipped paint. So I go inside, talk to the Manager of the place, Issac, and tell him what happened. He comes out and says, "sorry." SORRY!?!?? I said I needed his insurance info because I'm reporting it to my insurance. They guy says he doesn't have insurance. So I say "ok, we'll compensate me for the damage. He originally gave me $200 for the rack, and did about $100-$200 worth of damages removing it!! This assclown refused!! Not only that, HE TRIED TO BLAME IT ON ME! This business has lots of used shells, but they are overall in poor condition. Most of them are stored down a dirt alley, stacked on top of each other, in a fenced lot. Little, if any, care is taken to keep them from being further damaged. They advertise their shells extensively on Craiglist and indicate that they are in great condition. They also tell you the same on the phone. When you drive down there, however, (2 hours in my case), you find that they range from pretty bad to really bad. Furthermore, they will negotiate very little on the price. They want top dollar, considering how bad these shells are. To compound the issues, the place is very unorganized. No one seems to know what they have or where things are. Then, they will disappear in the middle of helping you. Despite all that, there were several people there, buying shells. I called and spoke to someone on the phone (sorry i don't remember your name) and he was so helpful. While what I had in mind wouldn't work he offered another suggestion. These guys completely wasted my time today, what a joke. I was told the service would only take an hour. I spent 45 minutes standing the sun watching them fail to fix the latch of a camper of a truck that rolled in after mine. They kept re-iterating "just a couple more minutes we're gonna be on yours in no time". I was extremely patient, but after realizing an hour would come and go without even getting started on service, I kindly informed them I would be leaving, and left. So a couple hours of wasted time but maybe for the best considering they couldn't figure out how to fix a faulty latch. Adam crushed it on handling my purchase of my first shell on my Tacoma. Called Thursday and got an appointment for Saturday. He answered all my questions on the call and left me feeling warm & fuzzy. Got to the spot, which is 2 hours away from L.A., and he already had the shell on display. Shell looked good with some minor wear & tear and Adam mended her together like a seamstress and a blanket. I would give zero stars if it was possible. DO NOT GO HERE. I purchased a ladder rack for my '03 Ranger. I called for a price. I was given 695 plus tax, or no tax if i paid in cash. I used a card. Had the rack installed, no big deal right? I didn't notice until I got back to my shop that the rack is beat to all hell. Scratched in more placed than I can count. Even down into the steel in many places. Hooks bent. The manager would not budge. He offered to replace it (which is not possible for me in the next 45 days and it will be used in that time) or take the tax off?!? What? Remember when I could have gotten that taken off had I paid cash!? He refuses to compensate selling me an obviously used piece of equipment. He called me a few days later to let me know when it was ready. SHADY. went here to look at a used shell, first off there was a tattooed, methy guy wandering around who'd lost his phone - that was a tip off. secondly the whole place reeked of cat piss maybe - it's a dump. checked out the shell they'd "just gotten in stock" (when I called): filthy, seals were shot, window was pulling away from the shell. guy offered it to me for a good price with paint, but I could already smell a disaster. then he offers me another brand of shell, says he'll get it new, throw in the hinged sliding window against the cab, headliner, paint and installation, no tax if I pay cash, for about 3/4 the price of the quote for the top of the line shell from their dealer. I recently came to this place after seeing an ad posted on Craigslist about a soft cover for my truck bed. Decided to check this place out instead of calling. So, I came in Monday.. Asked about the cover and was given a price and had to leave a deposit (which was half of the full total) for the cover, and the manager told me the part would be in the next day (Tuesday). After leaving, and on my way back to the freeway, the manager calls me and tells me the part won't be in till Thursday. Which of course, was disappointing because I had work that day and had the day off the following day, when the part was originally supposed to be delivered. Thursday comes around, and although I was at work, I didn't get a missed call, nor a voicemail regarding whether my part had came in or not. Friday comes around, and I had work at 4pm that day, so I called in at 10:30am to see if my part had came in. The guy who answered told me to call back in a hour, because the delivery truck should be there by then. Of course this caught me off guard, considering it was supposed to be there already.. But whatever, I've already waited 4 days, what's another hour? I called back a hour later and asked about my part, and the guy told me it's there, but they're busy and to come in at 2pm. I told the guy that I had work at 4pm and was inquiring about how long it'd take for the install. He said I should be okay. I come in at 2pm, my truck part doesn't get put into my truck till about 3:45pm, and right before the installer gets into my truck, I asked how long it was gonna take. He immediately starts yelling at me, telling me he doesn't know, and then goes to the manager, where I of course am irritated, so I follow him there. We go inside, and the manager tells me that his employee is just "nervous." I told him that I just asked the installer a simple question about the length of the installation and he (the installer) starts yelling at me at the top of his lungs ranting about how he doesn't know how long it'll take. I told the manager, "as the installer, I would assume that he, of all people should know how long it would take." Then continued to tell the manager, "I called this morning to ask about my part, you told me to call back in a hour. I call back in a hour, you tell me to come in at 2. I get here at 2, and my truck isn't in the garage till 3. I ask the installer how long it'll take because I have work at 4, and I get yelled at. Now I'm here in front of you, and all you can say is that he's nervous?!" All the manager said was, "well take care of your truck, have a seat. It could take up to a hour." By this time, I'm just outraged. 30 minutes ago by, and they tell me my truck is done. I go to work, and come home, and the next day, I check out the quality of the work that was done and notice that not only did they scratch my truck, but the cover wasn't even installed properly. I ended up having to take the entire thing off, and reinstall it. I really don't like paying people for their labor if I just have to do it again myself, later. In conclusion, I would never buy anything from this place, nor would I recommend anyone to come here. Definitely not worth the time and money spent here. Lesson learned! read more

Don't let them touch your truck. Don't go here. The people who work here do not even try to do a good job. The owner Alfonso will tell you anything to get your money and the not follow through. The guys in the yard are hacks. Look at their tools - a collection of broken junk - the shop is a disaster - a sure sign of bad craftsmen. They sent my old window to LA to get a custom replacement window made... when it was too big they wanted to cut my canopy apart to get it to fit - they wanted to cut off the sealing surface - which would make it leak for sure. "thats all we can do" Finally I used their grinder and ground down the window in desperation to get it to fit. Then the guy cut off all the wires to my brake light and dome light in the canopy and wouldn't fix them. "I got other people to help - they are going to get mad." beware beware I should have went to that place in Escondido They were a little more expensive but I watched them work for a while and it looked like a much better shop... trying to save a few pennies only bought me frustration read more

This is my first post on yelp. I wanted to write something because I saw a ton of negative things being written about this place. I ordered a custom 4 window camper shell from them that no other place said they could order (called about 10 different places). When they received it, I went to their shop on a Saturday morning and they installed it and cut and placed a rug for my bed. The shell was in pristine condition and the install was just fine. I chatted with about 4 different guys that worked there during the install, very nice hard working guys. I couldn't have been happier with the whole process. Their prices were the best I've see as well. I live in Costa Mesa and will gladly make the drive down to San Diego to do business with them again. P.S. - I bet most of the complaints on here are about the general conditions and upkeep of the place. WHO CARES! They are legit camper shell experts. read more

I went for a shell they said they had in stock which. They had the shell but after waiting 30 minutes they told me the shell was damaged. I wish I would have read the reviews on here before I did any business with this place. I bought a camper shell for my truck here. The sales man I delt with is a liar plain and simple. The shell I bought had no keys. He said it would be no problem for me to go to a locksmith and they can make me a key, "he sells them with no key all the time and never has a problem." After taking it to 3 locksmiths it became apparent getting a key made for the shells locks was not possible. Not the end of the world, I called Custome Road and explained the situation. After making comments insinuating the locksmiths I took the shell to where incompetent, the sales man assured me he can "help me out" and order the cylenders for a charge of roughly 300 including installation, and it would take about a week to get them in. He made it a point to let me know I was getting the "help you out" price. I told him that I didn't want to wait that long nor did I have any more money to spend on this shell. I had already been driving around with an empty shell for 2 days, because I cant put my whole livelihood in this truck if it doesnt lock. I let him know I would like to just return the shell because the whole situation had left a bad taste in my mouth and he was untruthful about the key situation. If I knew it was going to be an extra few hondred dollars I never would have bought it in the first place. He sudenly was able to obtain the cylinders for my truck that day. But I would still need to pay an installation fee. I let him know that I was not going to pay anymore money twards this shell and he can have his unlockable shell back. He then got the installation fee waived. He told me I could come have them install it, they would need my truck for 2 hours. I told him I already took a day off work to get the shell and I didnt want to take any more time off work in regards to the shell. I asked if I could just come pick up the cylenders on my lunchbreak and install them myself. He told me no, they need to install them which made no sense at all. So I got more time off work to have the cylenders installed. I quickly found out that they needed to be the ones to install them because they definitely are not the cylinders to this shell. The installer had to put a roughly cut piece of metal in there as a spacer to make them work. He also had to go at my shells handals with a grinder to make them work. All in all it was a bad experience. I ended up spending way too much time going to locksmiths and going back and forth with this salesman haggling with him about price. He tried to take advantage of me by lying about being able to get a key made than trying to make more money off the lie he told me. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. This is an update. My pop&lock handle broke, which sucks. But this is a somewhat known issue and is not Custom Roads fault. I called down and they suggested i call the company directly to as for a warranty. I did and had the new part the next week. Custom road even emailed me the invoice in the next 15 mins. Custom Road promised to install the part free of charge. Great customer service as to the craigslist ads for shells.... buyer beware (I wish they would stop this, or be more honest on the ads) read more

I got a used camper shell for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma there this week. I called on Thursday and placed a hold on it with Alfonso and checked it out the next day. They have a main lot with some newer shells on racks, but the older shells are stacked on top of each other with 2x4's, especially at their satellite lot a few blocks down. That being said, my shell was still in pretty good condition (although I can see what other people on here are saying about the older shells being worn down just by the storing conditions). I ask them to put carpeting/headliner, a pet screen, and also decided to put in a bedrug after seeing it in their office. Alfonso told me that the bedrug wouldn't get there till Monday, so I decide to just get the shell installed with the newly included carpeting and pet screen. When I got home, I did notice a very small section where the fiberglass was exposed inside the shell and some of the excess foam lining wasn't properly trimmed. Since I was going back there on Monday I figure I would address these problems to Alfonso and he had his installers fix it! The installer also replaced the insulation lining for the back window even when there were only small sections that needed it. That's great customer service! If you do buy here, all I can advise is that you check the shell before you buy. You might also have to give the side windows a good cleaning due to the way they store them. I would definitely recommend them to a friend who's looking for a used shell! read more

We had a pretty good experience here. We had been calling around for about 2 weeks looking for a used camper shell. Custom Road is over an hour away, but they were also the only place that had one in stock that fit our truck. They close at 6, but they stayed almost 2 hours after closing to install the camper shell for us. They made sure the fit was snug, the doors closed and locked properly, and all electrical worked before we left. I also saw the ad on Craigslist, I called up and talked to Alfonso, he said he had a used shell for my 2004 Ford F150 Super crew it was silver like my truck frameless rear window super clean, makes the truck look like an SUV, as far as the shop goes it is not immaculate but who cares you don't have to live there, there is a lot of work going on, old shells coming off new ones going on, Rodrigo did an awesome job on my truck, he put a sliding rear window in my truck and in stalled the shell and they also installed a sweet Yakima rack system on the shell a cab of my truck so I can take my kayaks down into Baja, so these other reviews sound a lot biased like they work for the competition, so if you want to over pay go to the big dealership with their painted floors in the shop area and their snap on tools and uniforms and you pay for all of that!! Good for you, the Leer shell fits like a glove, 2200 new I got it for 1100, couple scratches and paint matches the truck perfectly, went home ran water all over the truck and shell no leaks at all, very happy!! Bought an AMP Reseach Powerstep from Custom Road. They installed it. I noticed that the passenger side had a noticeable larger gap between the step and the body of the truck(from the rear of the truck to the front, the gap was noticeably uneven). Went back to have it adjusted but the installer said he couldn't move the bracket to adjust it. He even denied that there was a noticeable gap. I left very annoyed as to the incompetence of the installer. Afterwards I called the manufacturer to find out what needs to be done to and they told me. I did not want to have Custom Road adjust it because I did not want any scratches on my new truck like other reviewers have experienced. DO NOT HAVE CUSTOM ROAD INSTALL ANYTHING. read more

We bought a camper shell from here a month ago to move across the country. A few days into our drive, the seal on the back window started coming off so some of our belongings were ruined. Today while we were driving on the expressway, the back window flew off and shattered on the vehicle behind us. The window was shut and locked. Luckily, we had just emptied the back of the truck or we would have caused a four car pileup with a semi and lost everything we own or worse. We called them to see what they could do for us and, of course, the answer was nothing. I would never buy from this company again.
