So this is a cute walk-up custard spot. I got a single scoop which turned out to be a LOT of ice cream. The selection is limited; they only had a handful of traditional flavors. I got the s'mores and the cookies and cream in my single scoop and although the c&c was just ok, the s'mores was YUM! Small parking lot, it's shared with two other businesses but there's parking in the office space next door. Picnic tables are available and the service is friendly and fast.

Great customer service and portion size! They only had 4-6 flavors which made the decision easy (I got cookies and creme). My first time trying custard and it was delicious

So delicious! Huge portions so it's decently priced. The workers were so kind and patient.

Fast and delicious! Walk-up window service, no indoor facilities for customers. Sweet and creamy custard, I had the strawberry, which was perfect! Highly recommend visit!

This place is delicious!! The line goes by super quick, and the staff is really nice! They get orders out quickly too. Perfect for casual dessert run!

Such a cute little gem!! We came here after dinner and had ourselves the sweetest treat! They have a calendar of rotations of special flavors and the flavor when we went was Banana Caramel and it was heavenly!! So creamy and perfect. There is a small parking lot but it's full when we came, but there are plenty of street parking.

At the custard shack, you can have your custard and eat it too. My friend said I HAD to try custard at "a place in Belle Haven" after happy hour 10 minutes away. We got there around 7:15/7:30pm on a Friday night and there was a line of 5 people at the order line and a crowd near the pick up window. We had to wait a while to order and to get our orders but there was only one person working, and I felt so bad for her. She kept a smile on her face and was so pleasant, polite, and apologetic. Her demeanor made it so I didn't mind the wait too terribly--I felt too bad to be angry. We got the chocolate oreo and cookies and cream, and they were both amazing! I liked the cookies and cream a little better. From what I hear, they always have vanilla and chocolate and then they have a flavor of the week. They also have milkshakes, sundaes, sherbet. It's a shack and they do not have indoor seating. There are some seats outside but we ended up eating in the car because it was so cold. Oh--they have a parking lot but it was packed, took me awhile to get a spot by circling around and waiting. There were some cars who were parked on the street.

This ice cream is damn good. It's sort of whipped and light and yet creamy and delicious. We stopped here after a meh brunch and it really hit the spot. I had a scoop of vanilla with hot fudge, whipped cream and reese's peanut butter cups and yes yes yes it was exactly what I wanted. They also ran through the line quickly, which is always appreciated. Cute spot and while it's a little far out from the city, I would definitely go back when I'm in the area.

This is a small custard shop in Alexandria. They have a very small parking lot so it's hard to find a space. I ended up parking on the street. You order at one window and pick up at the other, both of the girls who helped me were really nice and I didn't wait long at all. I Love good custard but this was not it. It didn't taste very creamy, I would say it was just average. It wasn't nasty, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. I ordered a chocolate and vanilla mixed sugar cone. The sugar cones come in a cup and they stick the cone on top. Maybe I needed to try something else but what I had was very underwhelming.

OMGsh! I always opt for the sorbet as I'm not a fan of custard. On my first trip, I combined the strawberry and lemon sorbet and was it delicious! Perfect balance of sweet, and the texture...phenomenal. I visited a month or so ago and they had dragon fruit! I couldn't resist the vibrant color, so I paired with the lemon sorbet--simply magical. A must when you're in the area.

Not to be overlooked by The Dairy Godmother up the road, Custard Shack is a frozen custard shop worth the pitstop. Located in Alexandria's charming Belle Haven neighborhood along the Potomac River, Custard Shack is just off the GW Memorial Parkway. After visiting with my five-year-old daughter, here's why you should go: 1) Frozen custard: Using many ingredients from Wisconsin, it's creamy and with the right texture. They post their flavor of the day on their Instagram page and maintain a few regulars. When we went, they had vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream and fudge brownie as the flavor of the day. They also have sorbet for dairy-free options. They also have a few gluten-free options. The kids size is more than enough and you have the option of a cup, waffle cone, sugar cone or cake cone. My daughter got vanilla with rainbow sprinkles and gummy bears. (She loved the topping options depicted through the window.) My kid scoop of fudge brownie was flavorful and divine. The fudge and brownie bits were throughout the custard. 2) Space: True to its name, it's out of a little shack that was once a neighborhood grocery store. It's takeout only, but they have a single picnic table with a large red umbrella cover by a unique mural of custard and a burger on D.C. landmarks. Next door is a pizzeria from the same owners. There's a medium-sized parking lot in front of both businesses. 3) Story: They opened in 2015 and are family-owned. Invested in the community, they expand their hours in the summer and employ local high school students who all seem to love their jobs. 4) Hours: It's open year-round, but they open at noon every day in the summer (June-August) and close between 9-10pm given the night.

Easily a 10/10 for that category. What really stood out to me was the variety of flavors. I tried the strawberry matcha cookie and was honestly surprised by how much I liked it. It had a really nice balance of flavors and didn't feel gimmicky at all. It's always a risk trying something a little different, but this one definitely paid off. Another thing I appreciated was that they had a section of cookies discounted because they were made the night before. I love when places do this...it's a great way to try more flavors without spending a lot, and honestly, the cookies were still really good. Service-wise, the cashier was super helpful and patient, especially when it came to explaining flavors and giving recommendations. That always makes a difference when you're staring at a case full of options and can't decide.

The decor leans heavily into a Gen Z and Gen Alpha vibe, complete with numerous photo opportunities for your social media feed. Think neon signs, floral walls, and playful details like the swing chairs that feel straight out of Ce-La-Vi in Dubai. It's definitely a "sceney" spot, but done with charm -- more fun than pretentious. Whether you're meeting a friend or just stopping in for a pick-me-up, the space makes a strong first impression. In & Out: This is very much a grab-and-go café. There's a small seating area if you want to stay for a quick chat, but it's tight and not built for long visits. Still, the location is great -- perfect for picking up your drink and strolling around the area. It's ideal for a quick coffee run or a midday break rather than a full sit-down experience. Latte Variety: The drink menu is impressive, featuring one of the most extensive selections of flavored lattes and hot drinks available. From creative takes on classics to seasonal specialties, they've got everything: lattes, teas, and even rich hot chocolate options. It's a dream for anyone who loves exploring different flavor combinations -- or wants a cozy drink done right. Pro Tip: - Take off your polarized sunglasses when ordering -- the menu screens are impossible to read through them (learned that one the hard way). - Great spot for photos, a quick caffeine fix, and people-watching.

After taking a look at the candy, gelato and desserts, we settled on key lime pie. The key lime pie was pretty good, though it was perhaps a little too sweet and the filling rather dry. Because we were first time customers, the shopkeeper offered us each a piece of complimentary candy. The candy had a shell filled with a confection containing Japanese citrus yuzu fruit. The shell was coated with dark chocolate. I'm just going to say this was the tastiest, most delightful candy I've ever sampled. Dolce & Bean also sells attractively designed packages of candies. These would make good gifts. We absolutely will be back for more candy and want to try the gelato. One minor thing is that the shop was chilly and I had to put my hoodie on. But heck, aren't most restaurants and stores around the DMV freezing cold in the summer?
