    Strawberry!
    Alicia M.

Always a great place on a hot day for some good custard. Currently the seasonal is strawberry and it is creamy and delicious, with real strawberries! Service is fast and pleasant as always. As for ambiance, they have benches in the shade as well as out in the open. We opted for shade on this particular day. Will be going back again for sure.

I got the brownie sundae with their custard flavor of the day: half baked. I loved the half baked custard. The custard was similar to ice cream but a little creamier and melted in my mouth. I loved the chunks of cookie dough in the custard. Their caramel also tasted good on the sundae. This is the first brownie sundae that I've gotten where I had brownie leftover rather than ice cream leftover. I think they got the ratio wrong. It looked like 1 scoop of custard to 2 pieces of brownie. I would have preferred 2 scoops of custard to 1 piece of brownie. Also their brownie was a little dry. It tasted dense like the grocery store brownie bites. I prefer my brownies moist and either soft or gooey with a crispy crust. Also their peanuts tasted a little stale. There is not much parking in front of the ice cream store and all the seating is outdoors with no umbrella if it rains. There was a line but they had the cashier and another staff come out with a POS to take our order. Very efficient and line moves quickly. Kudos. I would come back for their half baked custard flavor again.

So this is a cute walk-up custard spot. I got a single scoop which turned out to be a LOT of ice cream. The selection is limited; they only had a handful of traditional flavors. I got the s'mores and the cookies and cream in my single scoop and although the c&c was just ok, the s'mores was YUM! Small parking lot, it's shared with two other businesses but there's parking in the office space next door. Picnic tables are available and the service is friendly and fast.

Super friendly service and cool vintage ice cream shop vibe. The butter pecan custard was creamy and had a great flavor! Tiny complaint would be just alittle more pecans but the flavor made up for it!

Great customer service and portion size! They only had 4-6 flavors which made the decision easy (I got cookies and creme). My first time trying custard and it was delicious

Fast and delicious! Walk-up window service, no indoor facilities for customers. Sweet and creamy custard, I had the strawberry, which was perfect! Highly recommend visit!

Such a cute little gem!! We came here after dinner and had ourselves the sweetest treat! They have a calendar of rotations of special flavors and the flavor when we went was Banana Caramel and it was heavenly!! So creamy and perfect. There is a small parking lot but it's full when we came, but there are plenty of street parking.

This place is delicious!! The line goes by super quick, and the staff is really nice! They get orders out quickly too. Perfect for casual dessert run!

So delicious! Huge portions so it's decently priced. The workers were so kind and patient.

At the custard shack, you can have your custard and eat it too. My friend said I HAD to try custard at "a place in Belle Haven" after happy hour 10 minutes away. We got there around 7:15/7:30pm on a Friday night and there was a line of 5 people at the order line and a crowd near the pick up window. We had to wait a while to order and to get our orders but there was only one person working, and I felt so bad for her. She kept a smile on her face and was so pleasant, polite, and apologetic. Her demeanor made it so I didn't mind the wait too terribly--I felt too bad to be angry. We got the chocolate oreo and cookies and cream, and they were both amazing! I liked the cookies and cream a little better. From what I hear, they always have vanilla and chocolate and then they have a flavor of the week. They also have milkshakes, sundaes, sherbet. It's a shack and they do not have indoor seating. There are some seats outside but we ended up eating in the car because it was so cold. Oh--they have a parking lot but it was packed, took me awhile to get a spot by circling around and waiting. There were some cars who were parked on the street.

This ice cream is damn good. It's sort of whipped and light and yet creamy and delicious. We stopped here after a meh brunch and it really hit the spot. I had a scoop of vanilla with hot fudge, whipped cream and reese's peanut butter cups and yes yes yes it was exactly what I wanted. They also ran through the line quickly, which is always appreciated. Cute spot and while it's a little far out from the city, I would definitely go back when I'm in the area.

Not to be overlooked by The Dairy Godmother up the road, Custard Shack is a frozen custard shop worth the pitstop. Located in Alexandria's charming Belle Haven neighborhood along the Potomac River, Custard Shack is just off the GW Memorial Parkway. After visiting with my five-year-old daughter, here's why you should go: 1) Frozen custard: Using many ingredients from Wisconsin, it's creamy and with the right texture. They post their flavor of the day on their Instagram page and maintain a few regulars. When we went, they had vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream and fudge brownie as the flavor of the day. They also have sorbet for dairy-free options. They also have a few gluten-free options. The kids size is more than enough and you have the option of a cup, waffle cone, sugar cone or cake cone. My daughter got vanilla with rainbow sprinkles and gummy bears. (She loved the topping options depicted through the window.) My kid scoop of fudge brownie was flavorful and divine. The fudge and brownie bits were throughout the custard. 2) Space: True to its name, it's out of a little shack that was once a neighborhood grocery store. It's takeout only, but they have a single picnic table with a large red umbrella cover by a unique mural of custard and a burger on D.C. landmarks. Next door is a pizzeria from the same owners. There's a medium-sized parking lot in front of both businesses. 3) Story: They opened in 2015 and are family-owned. Invested in the community, they expand their hours in the summer and employ local high school students who all seem to love their jobs. 4) Hours: It's open year-round, but they open at noon every day in the summer (June-August) and close between 9-10pm given the night.

The kind where one cookie can easily be shared (or not lol ). They're rich and sweet, so if you're someone who loves a heavy dessert that feels like a treat-treat, you'll be in heaven. Easily a 10/10 for that category. What really stood out to me was the variety of flavors. I tried the strawberry matcha cookie and was honestly surprised by how much I liked it. It had a really nice balance of flavors and didn't feel gimmicky at all. It's always a risk trying something a little different, but this one definitely paid off. Another thing I appreciated was that they had a section of cookies discounted because they were made the night before. I love when places do this...it's a great way to try more flavors without spending a lot, and honestly, the cookies were still really good. Service-wise, the cashier was super helpful and patient, especially when it came to explaining flavors and giving recommendations. That always makes a difference when you're staring at a case full of options and can't decide.

Not because of the flavors, but the ways you can get your sweet treat (like, cone, cup, sundae, etc.) and other various options (like ice cream, sorbet, custard, etc.) I sampled a couple of sorbet flavors and ended up with a small cup of those two flavors. A small cup is two scoops so it was perfect! The flavors were Lemon Lavender and POG (pomegranate, orange, guava). At first I think I liked the lavender best, but as I continued to eat, I think POG stole the show. They were both refreshing and flavorful and I appreciated the blends to give my tastebuds new flavors. Del Ray is such a cute neighborhood too. I sat outside at the tables/benches to eat. If you're planning a visit, their website is pretty slim and doesn't list all the options for getting a sweet treat. I do think it would be helpful for it to include those options. It was a Saturday night almost 9pm and I didn't realize they were about to close. When I ordered my donut, I asked if I was getting ice cream too, should I pay separately or together and I was informed that since they were about to close, the donuts were free! And they asked if I wanted to try any others. So I got: mango tajin, chocolate cake (not pictured) and chocolate glazed. The chocolate cake was dry and didn't have much flavor. The chocolate glazed was my favorite. The donut was cakey and reminded me of some sweet treat from my childhood that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe some of the Entenmann's donuts? Anyway, it was really good for being a simple and plain donut. The manjo tajin wasn't bad. It's a plain vanilla cake donut with the mango and tajin in the icing. The flavors were good, but it wasn't worth me finishing. I love donuts and I love specialty donuts. While they may have some, this wasn't a place that I will include in my regular donut rotation, but I'm glad I finally got to try them.
